Actor and writer Daisy May Cooper shot to fame with This Country, the mockumentary about rural poverty in the Cotswolds that she wrote and starred in with her brother Charlie. She followed that with the lead in BBC/HBO show Rain Dogs and in 2022 she co-wrote and starred in the twisting female-friendship thriller Am I Being Unreasonable? With the second series about to drop on BBC 1 and BBC iPlayer Daisy joins Clare McDonnell in the Woman's Hour studio. A new BBC podcast has uncovered some shocking allegations of grooming, trafficking and sexual exploitation linked to a yoga movement. The Bad Guru podcast follows Miranda who joined a yoga class in the UK which she discovered had links to the Atman Federation, an international yoga movement led by the Romanian guru Gregorian Bivalaru. After becoming part of the wider movement, Miranda says that she was groomed and sexually exploited. Clare hears from Miranda and from the podcast's presenter, investigative journalist Cat McShane. From her close relationship with her mum to her mental health struggles as a teenager, 24-year-old Fiona-Lee from Howden in Yorkshire writes earnestly about the emotional rollercoaster that is adolescence to adulthood. Her EP, ‘Nothing Compares to Nineteen,' is released on the 7th of March and she joins Clare to perform the track 'Lavender'.Presenter: Clare McDonnell Producer: Laura Northedge

Stephen is the man behind the iconic and culturally permeating drum sounds and rhythms on Tom Wait's Rain Dogs and Swordfishtrombones. He has extensively toured and recorded with John Hammond, The Smashing Pumpkins, Chuck Berry, Wanda Jackson, and Mavis Staples. We learn why playing 50+ shows prior to recording On and On is essential to the MSSV process, what surprises they encountered as the songs evolved and how replacing their stolen van changed Stephens drum sound. We get a peek in-side MSSV's recording process at Big Ego Studios, how the Minutemen's political view on notes influenced the rhythm section on On and On and Joe tries but fails to resist talking drums with Stephen. Mexican Gothic Author Comes to Jacksonville Silvia Moreno-Garcia, the New York Times bestselling author of Mexican Gothic, is coming to Jacksonville for Hispanic Heritage Month. Her latest novel is a historical drama set in Hollywood, following three different point of view characters all tied to the production of a movie inspired by the Biblical story of Salome. FEATURED BOOK: The Seventh Veil of Salome 1950s Hollywood: Every actress wants to play Salome, the star-making role in a big-budget movie about the legendary woman whose story has inspired artists since ancient times. So when the film's mercurial director casts Vera Larios, an unknown Mexican ingenue, in the lead role, she quickly becomes the talk of the town. Vera also becomes an object of envy for Nancy Hartley, a bit player whose career has stalled and who will do anything to win the fame she believes she richly deserves. Two actresses, both determined to make it to the top in Golden Age Hollywood—a city overflowing with gossip, scandal, and intrigue—make for a sizzling combination. Silvia Moreno-Garcia is the author of a number of critically acclaimed novels, including Gods of Jade and Shadow (Sunburst Award for Excellence in Canadian Literature of the Fantastic, Ignyte Award), Mexican Gothic (Locus Award, British Fantasy Award, Pacific Northwest Book Award, Aurora Award, Goodreads Award), Velvet Was the Night (finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize and the Macavity Award), and her newest book, The Seventh Veil of Salome, which was a Good Morning America Book Club pick for August 2024. Mexican by birth, Canadian by inclination. Cachanilla and Canuck, originally from Baja California, Silvia now resides in Vancouver. She has an MA in Science and Technology Studies from the University of British Columbia. Interviewer Michelle Lizet Flores is a graduate of the FSU and NYU creative writing programs. She currently works as a Creative Writing Instructor at Douglas Anderson School of the Arts and co-hosts the What's in a Verse Poetry Open Mic at Rain Dogs. Publications include The NCTE English Journal, Salt Hill Journal, and The Talon Review. A finalist for the Juan Felipe Herrera Award for Poetry, she wrote the chapbooks Cuentos from the Swamp and Memoria, and the picture book, Carlito the Bat Learns to Trick or Treat. Alt. Down Under podcast is back with another slice of Indie chatter! The Paris 2024 Olympics might be in full swing, but Melbourne post-punk/new-wave outfit Radio Free Alice are this year's real athletes... Fresh from a mammoth 2-month, 24-date stint in the UK and Europe, front-man Noah Learmonth drops by to talk about life on the road and the British food that has fuelled the band. Find out if there have been any holiday romances with Gregg's sausage rolls or cheap pints at Wetherspoons. Plus, the music industry: hated and adored. It's a tough nut for a lot of emerging bands, so what drives Radio Free Alice to keep taking a crack at it, as fans await the release of their second EP, Polyester? AND....Noah's Dream Gig Venue... he explains why a shaman is running the front door security and why fellow Melbourne acts Sex Mask & Rain Dogs make the dream line-up. Host Luke Scanlan returns from months in backpacking wilderness – a time when he has been able to catch Royel Otis – and send the Alt. Down Under team to catch The Last Dinner Party playing in Australia. This past year has been a whirlwind for the British band – a year that has seen them crack America. But how did they go down with the Aussie crowds? Loads for ya – don't miss it!

I'm very pleased to welcome Sammy Sanchez back to the program for a record-setting fourth appearance on the Badass Records podcast. And none of our chats have been brief ones.Sammy initially came around for Episode No. 44, in which we discussed a few of his favorite records: Pink Floyd's Animals (1977), Rain Dogs (1985) by Tom Waits, and LCD Soundsystem's This Is Happening (2010).For his second appearance, we tackled the Tom Waits discography, and that was super-fun and very educational. On his last go-round, we unearthed all of the Beck albums, and I think we're both glad we did that. This time, though, Sammy took the suggestion lead, and we decided we'd examine the studio albums by one of his all-time-favorite bands, Radiohead. If you're keeping score at home, those'er these:Pablo Honey (1993)The Bends (1995)OK Computer (1997)Kid A (2000)Amnesiac (2001)Hail to the Thief (2003)In Rainbows (2007)The King of Limbs (2011)A Moon-Shaped Pool (2016)Sammy's one of the most intelligent guys I've ever met, and this rich conversation we had was full of gems, i.e. the reminder (for me) that he longs to one day be a contestant on Jeopardy!.In the meantime, he's continuing to launch a new career, set aside a little nest egg, prepare for some quasi-upcoming travels, and possibly start a podcast of his own.Anyway, thanks to Sammy for his time and energy. And thanks to you for checking out the show.p.s. I meant Yo, Flaco, not Yo la Tengo.copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the audio samples contained in this episode. They are clips from a Gramatik track called, "Bright Day," which can be found on their 2009 release, Sb2 (c/o P&C 2014 Lowtemp).
Having gone through all of Waits's music Song by Song, we're obviously well-placed to say which ones are best... or maybe least-worst... perhaps just from our perspective... subjectively good in these two people's opinions... but then who are we to say? As we reach the end of it seems only right to furnish you all with another episode in the same week. Welcome to the penultimate TSP episode and this one has been long in the making. This week we welcome writer & show runner Cash Carraway. Craig and Cash were in touch 4 years ago to try and arrange and time and date for Cash to come on and talk…..turns out the perfect time and date is now! Cash first came to our attention with her book, Skint Estate. Since then, Cash has written for theatre and shorts and then a real breakthrough with incredible BBC/HBO series RAIN DOGS starring Daisy May Cooper. More recently Cash has been nominated in the BAFTA breakthrough category. Finally, Craig and Cash set up a date to meet for the first time in person to record. Craig has as welcomed into Cash's house where the tea flowed and Craig tried to mask the sound of doughnut eating whilst conducting the conversation. He may have failed on a few occasions. Cash is an incredible person so we were thrilled to make this work. After this conversation do go read SKINT ESTATE and RAIN DOGS is available to stream now. We can't wait to see what's new on the slate for Cash. Until then, please welcome the brilliant Cash Carraway. This mix started with the latest album by Eivind Aarset & Jan Bang - Last Two Inches of Sky. It has this great late-night vibe that I immediately latched onto. From there I returned to The Rain Dogs, an artist I had used in an earlier mix called Summoning the Spirits. And then one thing led to another and I ended up with an ambient mix with a fair amount of organic percussion. The final mix has a bit of Jon Hassell 4th world feel, some of that late-night vibe I mentioned, and a dash of Lost Tribe Sound strangeness. I think it all comes together rather well. One of my favorite ambient albums from the first half of 2023 is "Intrapersonal Experience" by Saphileaum. It's a great combination of atmospherics and percussion, reminiscent of 90s Steve Roach tribal ambient. After hearing this album I needed to do a drum/percussion-based mix and "Summoning The Spirits" is the result. Another recent discovery makes its way into this mix - The Rain Dogs. So far I only have one of their albums but I plan on buying many more. I have To pace myself though. Their album, From Abydos To Dendera, has shades of Jon Hassell and other 4th world styles I love. The tracks fit perfectly in this mix. I hope you enjoy the atmosphere and the rhythms. Cheers! You and your buddies flip your collars, as the rain pours down. You huddle under an awning as you finish your smokes.Life is good. You are young, independent, and ready for trouble. Then you head in to the bar. the joint. The dive. It's your home away from home. Speaking of home, the bartender tells you that the police department called, and your house is on fire. Then it occurs to you. You aren't young. You are 42. And then occurs to you that you've left your children home along to go drink... That scene and so many more await you on the Pod Like A Hole track-by-track review of Tom Waits' 1985 classic. With still one foot in the boxcars, Tom Waits explores European avant-garde influences and the results...well you'll have to listen to Eric , Marc and Steve figure it all out. How will they rate this album? Is Rain Dogs an old dog, or a dead dog? How would you rate this one, gentle listeners. You find your self in an old boxcar bouncing over the railroad track with an old hobo howling in your ear. Tales of love and loss, old dogs and prostitutes. It's a cornucopia of creamed corn , but somewhere in that whiskey soaked word salad is the story of a man. A man who harnessed the sound of a junkyard, cobbled it into a beautiful sound and aimed it our hearts. This is the story of Tom Waits, as only your boys at Pod Like a Hole can tell it. In anticipation of our track-by-track review of his classic album "Rain Dogs", Eric, Steve and Marc hop in that boxcar and take that California trip. If I've seen 80 Phish shows, I've seen at least half of those with one of the best dudes I've ever known, Jake Watson. He moved from KC to Charleston a few years back, but I was lucky enough to nab a few hours of his time on a recent visit back home, and he was kind enough to spend some of that time with me recording Episode #67.In addition to discussing the most-excellent human being that Jake is, we chatted about a few of his favorite records over the years, and they are these:Rain Dogs, Tom Waits (1985)Paul Simon's Graceland (1986)Paul's Boutique, Beastie Boys (1989)Matthew Sweet's Girlfriend (1991)So, check out our conversation. Check out the Merch' store on the Web site. And check out that Phish Dick's, "Light."Notes/edits: 1) Mule Variations (not "Versions") 2) get out of the '80s (not "'90s")copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the promo or the intro/outro audio. Sammy Sanchez is back! This time, we dug in to the entire Tom Waits discography, and what a ride it was.Sammy's first appearance on Badass Records was on Episode #44, in which we discussed a little LCD Soundsystem, a little Pink Floyd, and a little Tom Waits. And during that conversation, it occurred to me that I needed a Tom Waits fan with whom to geek out. And you know what? Sammy was game! Here's the list of what we covered:Closing Time (1973)The Heart of Saturday Night (1974)Nighthawks at the Diner (1975)Small Change (1976)Foreign Affairs (1977)Blue Valentine (1978)Heartattack and Vine (1980)Swordfishtrombones (1983)Rain Dogs (1985)Frank's Wild Years (1987)Bone Machine (1992)The Black Rider (1993)Mule Variations (1999)Alice (2002)Blood Money (2002)Real Gone (2004)Bad As Me (2011)Sammy was just as fantastic this time around as he was a few months back, and I'll definitely have him back for another run through some artist's body of work. I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to get this off the ground, and thankful that it's still got a pulse. So thank you for stopping by and giving Episode #66 a listen/view. t was the biggest night in fashion last night as the Met Gala took place on those famous steps in New York - but do we care as much anymore?Certainly not as much as many cared about the recent wedding of Sofia Richie and Elliot Grainge, or as much as we care about those romance rumours between co-stars Sydney Sweeney and Glenn Powell that have been all over the internet! In other news, Jenn Gabon is telling us why we have to watch HBO and BBCs new show Rain Dogs and binge Married At First Sight Australia (yes again!) while Orlaith's talking all about her obsession with Netlfix's The Diplomat and teasing what fans can expect from the Bridgerton spin-off series Queen Charlotte which lands on the streaming service on May 4th.
