The remarkable true story of author Ralph White's desperate effort to save the entire staff of the Saigon branch of Chase Manhattan bank and their families before the city fell to the North Vietnamese Army. In April 1975, Ralph White was asked by his boss to transfer from the Bangkok branch of the Chase Manhattan Bank to the Saigon Branch. He was tasked with closing the branch if and when it appeared that Saigon would fall to the North Vietnamese army and ensure the safety of the senior Vietnamese employees. But when he arrived, he realized the situation in Saigon was far more perilous than he had imagined. The senior staff members there urged him to evacuate the entire staff of the branch and their families, which was far more than he was authorized to do. Quickly he realized that no one would be safe when the city fell, and it was no longer a question of whether to evacuate but how. GETTING OUT OF SAIGON is the remarkable story of a city on the eve of destruction and the colorful characters who respond

One aspect of war that you don't often hear about is that people still have to keep doing their jobs in the middle of it, especially in poorer countries. Take Vietnam for example. It was a famously brutal war, but during the capture of Saigon, the employees of the Chase Manhattan Bank were will there. At least, they were until Ralph White arrived. Deploying the art of rule-bending, he managed to get 113 citizens out of a war zone. Sometimes breaking the rules actually is cool, and not just in a Fonzi sort of way.GETTING OUT OF SAIGON: How a 27-Year-Old American Banker Saved 113 Vietnamese Civilians Learn more about your ad choices. For over thirty years Pastor White has been the senior pastor at Bloomfield Baptist Church in South Memphis. On May 25, 2019, Pastor White was conducting the eulogy at a funeral when he collapsed. It's been over a year since, Ralph White, the legendary James River Park manager joined us for our first-ever Views from the Treehouse podcast. That inaugural effort is still our most listened to episode, so we brought Ralph back to help us celebrate, teach us about salamander sex and let us in on his secret firefly watching spot (and more). This one is not to be missed!
One of the shorter encounters, this brief lunch date with Ralph White features some zen wisdom from the consummate roots musician and veteran road dog.

It's been five years since Nathan Burrell took over for Ralph White at the helm of the James Park. Burrell talks about the future of the park, as well as the constant challenges of managing an attraction that drew nearly 2 million visitors last year.
For our second podcast, we bring you part 2 of our interview with Ralph White, the manager of the James River Park for over 30 years. Like Part 1, it's a doozy. White dishes on everything from Richmond's riverfront plan to what he thinks of our current mayor.
For our inaugural Views from the Treehouse podcast we sat down with none other than Ralph White, the legendary James River Park Manager. White retired in 2012 after 32 years in the urban wilderness, risking Kepone exposure, crack needles and drunken riots on Belle Isle, not to mention career suicide, in order to make Richmond a first-class outdoor recreation destination. White is also a master storyteller. In Part 1 of this two-part series, White covers everything from how he's like Judas Iscariot to meeting hobos in cabooses. This is a conversation you don't want miss!
Danny Barnes became a major player in the evolution of alternative country music when his acoustic trio the Bad Livers broke out of Austin Texas. Danny, Mark Rubin and Ralph White wielded tuba, accordion, fiddle, upright bass and banjo in ways that might have been considered scandalous had they not been so creative, witty and cathartic. They toured with big punk bands and wrote smart, quirky songs. They were able to twist roots and bluegrass music so far by knowing and loving the genres so well. There was never a band like them before or since. After that chapter closed in about 2000, Danny Barnes pursued projects as wide ranging as his taste, always nipping the avant garde, finding a role in American music somewhere between John Hartford and Frank Zappa. He developed the esthetic he calls barnyard electronics, which he says combines various bits of bluegrass, noise, rock, and electronic music. Live, he often performs solo with computer effects and looping equipment. But this year, Barnes took the completely opposite tack when he made and released the first straight ahead, no-frills bluegrass record of his career, Stove Up. Also, the story of The Jimmy Nalls Project.

One of them is a good wolf which represents things like kindness, bravery and love. The other is a bad wolf, which represents things like greed, hatred and fear. The grandson stops and thinks about it for a second then he looks up at his grandfather and says, “Grandfather, which one wins?” The grandfather quietly replies, the one you feed The Tale of Two Wolves is often attributed to the Cherokee indians but there seems to be no real proof of this. It has also been attributed to evangelical preacher Billy Graham and Irish Playwright George Bernard Shaw. It appears no one knows for sure but this does not diminish the power of the parable. This parable goes by many names including: The Tale of Two Wolves The Parable of the Two Wolves Two Wolves Which Wolf Do You Feed Which Wolf are You Feeding Which Wolf Will You Feed It also often features different animals, mainly two dogs.
Ralph White joins me to discuss his memoir THE JEWELED HIGHWAY that details his remarkable life traveling around the globe looking for answers, encountering holisitic learning centers, helping launch new consciousness training programs, and what is yet to be done. He is truly one of the people at the forefront of what many people refer to as "the shift" and he has been devoting his life to helping others connect to ancient esoteric knowledge and undestanding. My works exhibit outward expressions of feeling and celebrations of the inward journey of thoughtful introspection. I believe in the artist’s ability to create a dialog through each image, I am continually intrigued by the convergence of art and the observer. My goal is to evoke a spark of creativity and imagination with the audience. When they see my images or have an emotional response to my work, then my intention has been accomplished.” Rooted in transformational thinking, Ralph constantly looks for possibility, expressing the soul’s ability to evolve.
I'm sure that today's show will bring you many reflections. Our guest Ralph White is the author of the memoir, The Jeweled Highway: On the Quest for a Life of Meaning, which is the first memoir I have read in my life. This interviews gives you an more in-depth look into this man's life, the state of the world, conscious movements and how all of this relates with your life and how you can live with a purpose that is fulfilling. As soon as I read the back of the book and the first few pages I was totally drawn in. I found life story and message compelling and extremely relevant to us at The Spiritual Voice. Living a rich life and accomplishing a mission that is bigger than us is a seed that I feel is in each of us, including you. Our culture is deeply damaging our souls and the biosphere in the Western industrial civilization. We need to have an alternative through holistic ways of life. Ralph gives insights on the emerging Conscious Movement. Ralph talks about the different challenges and struggles as well as poverty that he faced while moving towards fulfilling his life mission. He made the pursue of mystical truth the priority of his life which is what fueled his choices. Our guest contrasts the current landscape to that of the era of 70s and 80s. The start of Esalen, the Omega Institute and other opportunities which were simply sprouting as well as dismissed as junk during those pioneering time. When Ralph started the New York Open Center in 1983 everyone thought that it would never work. He relates with everyone that is starting something which can feel as if it will never look at its inception. Although today we face more challenging financial obstacles as well as competition, the world and people in general are much more receptive of holistic projects. Ralph held the belief that we must transform our culture. Once he came to this realization he pondered on the best strategy to accomplish this. He paints a picture that we are in a time for the struggle of the soul of humanity. Together we discuss the possibilities for you to access sources of transcendence in the context of our urban landscape. Simply glancing outside of your window to contemplate the sunset can give you access to beauty in our world. The key is to find work that takes you into flow which will bring you completely present in the moment. Change tends to come from outside of the mainstream culture by individuals that are not burdened by the taboos of religious, philosophical or scientific worldviews. These people follow their vision of what they believe to be important to regardless of the obstacles on their path. Individuals coming into an awakening within themselves will bring meaningful change into the world. Once you start getting responses from other people you get fueled to pursue your vision. Fulfilling work is about the number of lives that you can impact rather than the accumulation of wealth. Ralph discusses meeting several allies and supporters on his path which may seem like perfect synchronicity. Although from a lived experience the connections could take several years to sprout. There was a lot of unknown when he pursued new paths, friendships, connections and projects. In the moment you really don't know how everything will unfold. The conversation evolves into ways we can seize opportunities and the path of truth. Listen to this exciting interview to reflect on your own existential questions.
