With the recent SCOTUS Dobbs decision, Christians who have long been declaring abortion to be Biblically condemned rejoiced as their conservative theology was validated. But does the Bible actually explicitly condemn abortion? In her book, "Abortion and the Christian Tradition: A Pro-Choice Theological Ethic," Margaret Kamitsuka uses rigorous academic research to debunk the assumption that the Bible is inflexibly anti-choice, examining the patriarchal structure that early church leaders established and that contemporary church leaders reaffirm to oppress and dehumanize pregnant people. ABOUT MARGARET Margaret Kamitsuka is Professor Emeritus at Oberlin College in Ohio. After getting her PhD in theology from Yale University, she taught at Oberlin College for over 20 years, where she focused on courses in gender and religion. Now she does research and writing in the area of theological ethics--specifically reproductive issues. Her most recent book is titled Abortion and the Christian Tradition: A Pro-Choice Theological Ethic, published in 2019. She and her coeditor have just completed a textbook that will come out later this year titled, The T & T Clark Reader on Abortion and Religion: Jewish, Christian, and Muslim Perspectives. We've tackled the social and political implications of Dobbs v Jackson on our sister podcast, On The Rocks Politica. We've written essays on what it means to communities and to women from a broad spectrum of experience and socio-economic backgrounds on this podcast and at 'Essays from An Artist. So it was important here at M the Media Project that we tackle the economic implications on this week's 'Are We Here Yet?' podcast. Our guest, Chanel Dubofsky is an author, educator and advocate who shared with us a multiplicity of information regarding the economic implications for women and for society as a whole due to restrictions placed on women to access reproductive healthcare. In Part 5 of Abortion: The Body Politic, Katie looks abroad for models of progress — and regress — when it comes to reproductive rights and abortion access. What are the trends and how does the U.S. now compare? We check in with the Center for Reproductive Rights to find out. Perhaps no region has seen more progress than Latin America. Human Rights lawyer and one of the founders of the Green Wave movement, Paula Ávila-Guillén, shares her experiences on the front lines of the decades-long fight for reproductive justice and what Americans can learn from our sisters to the South. We also hear from an activist in Mexico who is helping people across the border access abortion care they can no longer get in the United States. And academic, Lina-Maria Murillo gives us context for the unique relationship the United States and Mexico share when it comes to abortion access. There's no denying the fact that many of the countries we are highlighting are largely conservative and Catholic. What does the progress these Catholic countries have made say about our own complicated assumptions about religion and abortion. We hear from several leaders of faith from a Jewish Rabbi to a Baptist Reverend and leaders from organizations like, Catholics for Choice and SACRED, about how they have worked reproductive rights and abortion access into their faith practice. The ways in which abortion is often publicly debated can result in the harmful depiction of the experience of ending a pregnancy in overly simplistic terms. Rev. Katey Zeh, CEO of the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice, and Author of A Complicated Choice: Making Space for Grief and Healing in the Pro-Choice Movement, talks to us about her new book, the myths and stigma that people must wade through when getting an abortion, and the vast amount of feelings and experiences many people may have when accessing care. A Complicated Choice chronicles the complicated feelings that people have around their abortion experiences. Overall, the book highlights how people can make decisions surrounding abortion and have a lot of nuanced, complex feelings around it—but that doesn't mean that it wasn't the right decision. In addition, many people experience internalized abortion stigma, due to far-reaching myths and rhetoric spread by those who are anti-abortion. This stigma can often display itself as a sense of isolation in one's experience. White Christian nationalism intertwines greatly with the stigmatization of and logistical attacks against abortion. Steeped in racism, sexism, classism, and Christian nationalism, these abortion attacks disproportionately harm Black people, Indigenous people, other people of color, the LGBTQ+ community young people, etc. Find Reverend Katey Zeh's book at your local bookstore or on bookshop.org LinksA Complicated Choice by Katey ZehKatey Zeh on TwitterReligious Coalition for Reproductive Choice on TwitterReligious Coalition for Reproductive Choice on FacebookThe Kindreds PodcastINeedAnA.comAbortion Fund Donation FinderAbortionsWelcome.orgReligion and Repro Learning Center Take Action Follow the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice on Twitter and Facebook! As we've learned in previous episodes, abortion is permitted in Jewish tradition. On May 17, 2022, a large "Jewish Rally for Abortion Justice" was held in Washington, DC. Rabbi Marci Bellows attended and captured the thoughts of more than twenty of her colleagues as they marched for women's rights, reproductive rights for all pregnant individuals, and basic health care rights. The stigma of having an abortion is still rampant, especially among highly conservative people of faith. This led to Katey Zeh's passion for navigating how to bridge these two worlds. It is important to provide care and compassion to those who decide to go through abortion because, at its core, abortion is still part of the human experience. Statistically, most people who have abortions are already parents. And oftentimes, it is a parenting decision they need to make to care for their living children. A lot of times, these are people who have caregiving responsibilities. Regardless of whether people should have access to it, it's just important to recognize that most people who have abortions are parents. On the other hand, some people choose not to ever have kids. And unless they know that they won't be stigmatized, harassed, and pressured by society, only then is that choice made out of enthusiastic consent. This is a special episode this week! We are talking about Abortion with Rev. Katey Zeh. Often when we have conversations that feature both reproductive health and rights and faith, it seems the two subjects are diametrically opposed. But thanks to the large amount of diversity in the faith community, many individuals, communities, and organizations are supportive of bridging the gap between faith and reproductive health and rights! Reverend Katey Zeh, Executive Director for the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice, host of the Kindreds Podcast, and author of the book Women Rise Up: Sacred Stories of Resistance for Today's Revolution, sits down with us to discuss why it's important for people of faith to show public support for reproductive health and rights.Support the show (https://www.reprosfightback.com/take-action#donate)

America’s Changing Religious Landscape, the Helms Amendment & SCOTUSThis week on State of Belief, Interfaith Alliance’s weekly radio show and podcast, host Rev. Welton Gaddy will discuss recent important events confronting America’s religious communities. He’ll speak with a Princeton University History Professor whose new book, One Nation Under God: How Corporate America Invented Christian America, details the forging of an alliance between the Christian Right and corporate America. Later, we’ll talk to Rev. Harry Knox about his latest work to mobilize religious leaders to reform the Helms Amendment. And finally, Welton will share his own thoughts on the Supreme Court’s recent latest ruling on religious freedom and why it’s different (and better) than Hobby Lobby. Where America’s Religiosity Began, and How it’s Changing Now A recent poll from Pew confirms the growing number of Americans that now consider themselves to be religiously-unaffiliated. While many register surprise with America’s declining religiosity, few understand where that religiosity really began. Joining Welton this week will be Dr. Kevin Kruse, author of One Nation Under God: How Corporate America Invented Christian America. Welton and Kevin, a Professor of History at Princeton University and member of the Executive Committee of the Center for the Study of Religion, will discuss the “consecration” of President Eisenhower, the big business motivations behind rebranding America as a “Christian Nation,” and how their campaign’s success continues to affect our culture and politics to this day. The Helms Amendment and Religious Ideology in U.S. Foreign Policy Next, Rev. Harry Knox, President and CEO of the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice will join Welton in the studio to talk about the widely misused Helms Amendment. Created in the wake of the Roe v. Wade decision, this law blocks U.S. funds from supporting pregnancy termination as a form of family planning. Because it’s been applied way beyond its original scope, as Rev. Knox and the religious leaders he’s mobilizing point out, this stops the U.S. from helping ISIS’s and Boko Haram’s victims of rape and abuse. Tune in to hear what these religious and secular leaders are doing to change this policy. EEOC v. Abercrombie & Fitch: How Religious Freedom Complementing Civil Rights in a Way Hobby Lobby II Did Not On Monday, the Supreme Court released their decision in the religious freedom case, EEOC v. Abercrombie & Fitch. Many had feared a repeat of last year’s disastrous decision in Hobby Lobby, but the ruling – which defended the right of a Muslim woman to wear a hijab on the job – was remarkably positive. Welton ends our show this week by sharing his thoughts on what the Court got right about religious freedom this year, and what they missed last time around.
Meg Riley - Senior Minister for the Church of the Fellowship Meg gives you an inside look at the history of the church, its mission, and it's future. Learn about the prison outreach and the impact it has. Here about what's provided for the members who range from busy business people to people in remote areas and those that may not have the ability to come to a brick and mortar church. Meg shares her journey becoming a UU and what it was like being with people who were less than happy about her choice. Meg Riley Bio I am thrilled beyond words to serve what I consider the most creative, unusual, spiritual community in the world! In this congregation without walls, my responsibilities include spiritual leadership, working with others to envision our future, preaching, counseling, and being a general gadfly. Before coming to the CLF, I served the Unitarian Universalist Association in a variety of positions including directing the Advocacy and Witness Programs, Washington Office for Advocacy, Office of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual Transgender Concerns, and Youth Office. I directed the Standing on the Side of Love campaign and the Unitarian Universalist response to Hurricane Katrina. I have served many national boards of directors including the Interfaith Alliance, Americans United for Separation of Church and State, and the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice. I’ve been founding president of two organizations, Faith in Public Life and Equal Partners in Faith. In short, I have spent my life’s work advocating for a world of peace and justice. In so doing, I became quite interested in the media revolution taking place, and in the opportunity to create deep and meaningful community on the internet. I live in South Minneapolis with my human and animal family. You can find me daily on the CLF facebook page, through the CLF twitter account, by leaving a message at 800-231-3027, and through email, mriley@clfuu.org Meg's Favorite Quote: Adrienne Rich wrote, in her book of prose, What Is Found There: Notebooks on Poetry and Politics: What if is the first revolutionary question, the question the dying forces don't know how to ask. - Adrienne Rich As Meg added, It's a question that will take you anywhere.
