"Totally embraceable" and "larger than life" is how critics have described Rhonda Burchmore. An actor and singer who has entertained Australians for four decades, she has forged a career across stage and screen. Her musical theatre credits are vast, from Mame and Annie Get Your Gun to Mamma Mia and Hairspray. She's no stranger to cabaret, has released seven albums, and has also written her autobiography. Rhonda shares some highlights from her long career, taking us back to her earliest days when the passion for performing was clearly in her blood. She reminisces about the excitement and opportunities of live to air performances on popular TV variety shows such as The Don Lane Show and The Bert Newton Show, the trials of her stint on I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here, and we hear some of the music which has shaped her life. Rhonda Burchmore is currently dressing up eight times a week as a nun, for the riotous feel-good musical Sister Act playing now at Sydney's Capitol Theatre until late October before heading to Melbourne and the other major state capitals.
She's one of Australia's most beloved stars on the stage bringing together a powerful voice and an array of glamourous gowns. It's World Pride 2023 and the queer globe is converging on Sydney Australia to celebrate diversity, inclusion, community and fabulousness! To mark this momentous event the STAGES podcast is saluting the cast of captivating drag divas and personalities who have been featured on the podcast during the past 5 seasons. They are artists who have appeared on national and global stages; thrilling audiences, making a difference, healing community and expressing unique and wondrous talents. We spotlight these episodes so you can savour a second listen - or so you can sample the delights of these entertainers for the very first time. A Diva a day for each day of World Pride! For 30 years Aaron Farley and his drag persona Minnie Cooper have been entertaining audiences from Oxford street to Oxford circus. A happy accident in 2003 saw Farley embrace the art of drag and a new diva was born. Minnie Cooper is an enamoured part of the Australian drag industry and a recipient of more Drag Industry Variety Awards (DIVAs) than just about anyone. Minnie has been awarded Entertainer of the Year on a record number of four occasions. This new dimension in Farley's career followed an established position in many commercial musical productions throughout Australia including The Witches of Eastwick, Showboat, Crazy For You, Chicago and Singin' in The Rain. Successful turns as a choreographer and director have also allowed Farley to flex his creative muscle, teaching a new legion of performers and constructing engaging artistry for audiences. Minnie Cooper was abandoned as a baby and left in the doorway of Arq Nightclub. Thankfully, she was adopted and raised by drag queens who taught her everything about miming, glitter lipstick, platform heels and everything in between. She is the Queen of Oxford St, producing award-winning shows and driving Sydney's party goers wild with excitement. She has produced and choreographed many large-scale spectacles at events such as Mardi Gras ,Sleaze Ball and Flash Mobs . Minnie has worked with stars including Jimmy Barnes, Cyndi Lauper, Kylie Minogue, Tina Arena, Dannii Minogue, Kate Miller-Heidke, Adam Lambert ,Deborah Cox, David Atkins, Todd McKenney, Rhonda Burchmore and Australia's most famous drag performer, Carlotta. She has won more DIVA awards than just about anyone, including Entertainer of the Year 4 times, Sydney's Favourite Drag Queen and Choreographer of the Year just to name a few.In 2016 Minnie was semi finalist on' Australia's Got Talent' combining her drag and musical theatre talents. She appeared in season 4 of Jack Whitehall:Travels with My Father on Netflix. Minnie Cooper most recently appeared in RuPaul's Drag Race Down Under Season 2. We love a bit of alliteration hence why we've gone with the three T's in our title and dropped the other item of conversation within this episode. That other item is first up for discussion though, Rhonda Burchmore has been snubbed for another Carols by Candlelight and we are not having it. Then we need to check in with the meltdown from straight men and even some women to the Victorian Government's state election promise of free tampons & pads in public spaces. Donald Trump has announced he's running for President AGAIN, which means the Unicorn of Death was sadly right. Finally, Ticketmaster in America has screwed up and made it impossible for Swifties to buy tickets to Taylor Swift's upcoming tour and they are ready to go all Hunger Games on anyone and everyone responsible. There's also a surprise treat that Michael did without having any idea we were recording him, you can thank us for that later. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Joel Prime joins me from London to discuss his musical journey which began after he received his first set of drums for Christmas when he was three years old. He initially taught himself the basics, then began lessons with John Zac when he was 6, and by age 11, Joel was playing regular gigs. Joel's drumming prowess was immediately evident, and by being taught by many of Adelaide's elite drum educators, attending Marryatville High School, which offers a fabulous SIMC program, combined with a solid regime of practice, he soon developed his sparkling technique. Joel's acquired skill through hard work and persistence became his entrée card to a world of musical diversity. In his teens Joel was part of the Marryatville High School Stage Band, the group travelled for performances in London, New York, Los Angeles, Melbourne, and Sydney. These gigs paved the way for Joel to share the stage with such performers as Bob Mintzer, James Morrison, Bobby Shew, John Hoffman, Rhonda Burchmore, Jon Gordon, Tony Kofi, Alina Bzhezhinska, Ray Vega, Paul Bollenback, George Garzone and Pharoah Sanders. He was inspired to begin percussion after seeing his teacher Steve Todd performing together with his son Ben, in the popular Adelaide band 'Goose'. Joel took a break from studying music in the last 2 years of high school, and for a while was contemplating becoming a pilot, thankfully his love of music returned and he successfully auditioned for the The Elder Conservatorium of Music, at the University of Adelaide, where he was taught by another previous BAND IT ABOUT guest Laurie Kennedy. In 2005, he was awarded most outstanding percussionist at Generations in Jazz by James Morrison. In 2008, he received a prestigious performance award from Downbeat magazine (USA) as a member of the 2008 Adelaide University Big Band 1. Later that year, Joel received the Helpmann Academy Award for Jazz Drums, for graduating at the top of his class at the Elder Conservatorium in 2006 and 2007, then received the 2010 Helpmann Academy Award for most outstanding Honours graduate. Joel has led percussion workshops and performed at WOMADelaide, Glastonbury Festival, London Jazz Festival, Adelaide Festival of Arts, Adelaide Fringe Festival, and The Adelaide Cabaret Festival. Joel's burgeoning skill set continues to be recognized by the drumming elite. Joel is currently endorsed by Pearl Drums, Zildjian Cymbals, Vic Firth drumsticks and Remo drumheads. In 2011 he won the award for Australia's Best Up and Coming Drummer (Open age category) at Australia's Ultimate Drummers Weekend. It was Joel's parents who initially floated the idea of him going overseas to expand his music career, and as he already had a British passport, moving to London was the obvious choice. Joel didn't know anyone in London, so it took a while for him to begin to get work, but once his talents were seen at the open jam nights that he was regularly attending, he began to receive job offers. Joel is a member of the critically acclaimed 'Alina Bzhezhinska Quartet', who have appeared at the Jazz Legend Festival in Birmingham and many other venues around the UK including top London jazz clubs The Crypt and The Vortex. They appeared at the London Jazz Festival 2017 in a triple bill performance along with Coltrane' s specialist Denys Baptist and the legendary saxophonist Pharoah Sanders. Joel's versatility across congas, drum kit and all manner of Afro Cuban and Brazilian percussion now sees him performing with a vast array of ensembles across many musical styles. Joel also performs with 'Mr Little's Noisy Band' and 'London Street Band.' Music: "Band It About" theme song written & recorded by Catherine Lambert & Michael Bryant. Outro "Los Caballos" written by Alina Bzhezhinska, performed by the Alina Bzhezhinska Quartet. "Ben Todd is a drummer, percussionist, composer and bandleader from Adelaide in South Australia. Over the past 10 years, Ben has been touring the world with the internationally acclaimed "Cirque du Soleil" as a featured drummer, percussionist and now bandleader........ Ben has performed in Japan, Russia, The United States, Spain, Canada, France, Belgium and England and performed over 1500 shows. Prior to joining Cirque, Ben performed with a wide range of artists back in Australia including Kate Cebrano, Paulini, Ben Folds, Doug Parkinson, Rhonda Burchmore, James Morrison, David Campbell, Barry Humphries and Glen Shorrok, as well as playing in the pit orchestras for a variety of musical theatre shows including the Australia/NZ tour of Cats, The Wedding Singer, Miss Saigon and Grease. Ben began playing drums at the age of 3, adding to an already large family of drummers (3 generations to be exact). His first introduction to the instrument was from his father, who was a full-time freelance musician at that time."http://www.bentodd.com.au/Latest Album https://bentodd.bandcamp.com/album/memento"It was a honour to interview Ben Todd for this podcast. When Ben was talking about his career, first playing drums at 3 years old, coming from a family of 3 generations of drummers (maybe a 4th generation drummer on the way!), the respect he has for his dad drummer, Steve Todd, his determination over 3 years to do what inspired him at the age of 9 to join Cirque du Soleil and travel the world and achieve this.....and so much more, I couldn't help notice how humble, grateful to everyone that has helped him along the way and driven Ben was. His passion and sense of fun for what he does for a living, playing drums/music and being apart of the industry is truely inspiring. Thank you Ben for sharing your story, so far!"Tania Ingerson Podcaster/Founder TEA The Entrepreneurial Artist PodcastI would like to acknowledge that music played on my Podcast is an original tune by David Innocente, Jazz Musician/Artist - "One Thing Led to Another"https://www.innocente.com.au/

Rhonda Burchmore is showbiz through and through. Her electric ability to make audiences feel alive was a big factor in her ascent to stardom, but Rhonda's journey might not have reached its destination if not for some of the lessons she's learnt from theatre greats like Mickey Rooney and Angela Lansbury Beyond the glitz and glamour of showbusiness, Rhonda has also had to deal with some really tough, heartbreaking stuff. This is how she got through it. Thank you to Uncle Jack Charles for the acknowledgement of country. Instagrammers! THE BAZURA PROJECT'S RADIO FREE CINEMATHE TV SHOW ABOUT MOVIES IS NOW A RADIO PROGRAM RELEASED AS A PODCASTOn 29 September 2011, The Bazura Project's Guide To Sinema, a comedy series devoted to exploring cinematic sins, began its extremely limited run on the ABC. Now, exactly ten years later, the creators are back with their most exciting project yet: a press release. But it's a press release that's promoting their next thing, The Bazura Project's Radio Free Cinema. As many will doubtless recall, The Bazura Project's Radio Free Cinema was a huge hit, broadcast on an unspecified radio station an indeterminate number of years ago. Now, the recordings that everyone had believed (and hoped) were lost forever have been uncovered, digitised, cleaned up, edited for slander, and are now ready to be released on a podcast platform where they can be heard again… for the first time.Over six thrilling and definitely factual instalments, The Bazura Project's Radio Free Cinema will explore every possible aspect of the film world, including:interviews with the film industry's best and brightest, including: Aussie soap star-turned-Hollywood headliner, Amelia Bell-Jarman; the Oscar-winning producer of some of cinema's least challenging mid-brow works, Catarina Rice; achingly-dull minimalist Hungarian film composer Máté Lantos; and studio janitor from Hollywood's golden age, Jerry Schutzexclusive first-listen trailers for the most exciting new high-concept thrillers, low-concept romantic comedies, poorly-conceived fantasy adventures, crowd-placating dramas, and overstimulating kids' filmsoriginal songs from your favourite soundtracks and never-before-heard music from your least-favourite unreleased moviesdispatches from all around the world, including: an exclusive Sundance Film Festival premiere after-party; the world's greatest voice coaching academy on an island in the Baltic Sea; and a glamorous and exceedingly-morbid awards ceremony in the heart of Alaskaplus much, much more“It was always our plan to air six poorly-rated episodes on the endlessly-rebranded ABC2, disappear into obscurity for a decade, and then return with a six-episode podcast that wouldn't make us any money,” says co-creator and co-presenter Lee Zachariah.“The presently-oversaturated market of podcasts presented us with the perfect opportunity to release our own,” says co-creator and co-presenter Shannon Marinko. “If you manage to find it, and enjoy it, it's probably someone else's.”The show will feature an overstuffed cast that includes Tom Ballard, Rusty Berther, Kristy Best, Robyn Butler, Rhonda Burchmore, Santo Cilauro, Marc Fennell, Tim Ferguson, Abe Forsythe, Bob Franklin, Francis Greenslade, Tosh Greenslade, Roz Hammond, Stephen Hall, Andrew Hansen, Peter Helliar, Tegan Higginbotham, Ming-Zhu Hii, Adam Hills, Claire Hooper, Wayne Hope, Dan Ilic, Laura Hughes, Mark Humphries, Nazeem Hussain, Ed Kavalee, Christopher Kirby, Colin Lane, Tommy Little, Cassandra Magrath, Tony Martin, Shaun Micallef, Rhys Muldoon, Brian Nankervis, Celia Pacquola, Geraldine Quinn, Ben Russell, John Safran, Kat Stewart, Emily Taheny, Chris Taylor, Dave Thornton, Toby Truslove, Michael Veitch, Cal Wilson, and many, many more. The six-part series begins on October 5 on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, Google Podcasts, Radio Public, or directly via our website: bazuraproject.com/radiofreecinemaThe trailer is available to hear now via this link. The Bazura Project began its life on community television in 2006, running for 36 episodes across three seasons on Channel 31 Melbourne, TVS Sydney, 31 Brisbane, and C31 Adelaide. Today, we are going to have a throwback to 2018 when we interviewed Australian entertainment legend, Rhonda Burchmore. You may know Rhonda from 'I'm A Celebrity Get Me Outta Here' but she has so many other things under her belt. She has been in this business for over 30 years now. We had a chat together about performing since she was two and how she found her love for it, how it feels to be called the ‘Queen of Aussie Cabaret', how she juggles all of this with a family, and it of course wouldn't be a Rhonda Burchmore interview without talking about her famous legs. Have you seen them? They go for days! It makes sense why her memoir book is called ‘Legs 11'. We get a little deep later on in the interview and she shares with us an important lesson on self confidence. She used to hate being tall but now embraces it. Lets get many pearls of wisdom from this ‘Lady of Wisdom'. Ms Rhonda Burchmore. Go to the RaveItUpTV YouTube channel to check out the video of our interview. Adelaide drummer Ben Todd began playing drums at the age of 3, adding to an already large family of drummers (3 generations to be exact!) His first introduction to the instrument was from his father Steve who worked as a freelance musician. After leaving high school, Ben quickly became established in the Adelaide music community and began work in sessions, musicals and corporate bands, as well as conducting drum clinics and workshops both in SA and interstate. Ben sent his first audition tape when he was 15, and continued to send through updates every 6 months or so until finally securing his first contract when he was 19 with the internationally acclaimed "Cirque du Soleil". Ben has toured the world with Cirque as a featured drummer, percussionist and now bandleader with 3 of their shows, "CORTEO", "KOOZA" and most recently "VOLTA". Prior to joining Cirque, Ben performed with a wide range of artists back in Australia including Kate Ceberano, Paulini, Ben Folds, Doug Parkinson, Rhonda Burchmore, James Morrison, David Campbell, Barry Humphries and Glen Shorrock, as well as playing in the pit orchestras for many musical theatre shows including the Australia/NZ tour of Cats, and the Adelaide productions of Miss Saigon, Grease, Metro Street and The Candyman. Music: Intro "Like Kids" artist Cirque du Soleil album VOLTA, Outro "What's Up?" written by Ben Todd, the song was released in 2020 on Ben's album Memento and features Ben Todd - Drums and Percussion, Marty Holoubek - Bass, Mark Lettieri - Guitar, Paul White - Keyboards, Miron Rafajlovic - Trumpet, Ben Harrison - Saxophone, and Steve Todd - Percussion. While we've been serving lockdown realness from our lounge rooms, our lady and saviour Dolly Parton has been busy. Not only has she used a stack of her millions to help fund the development of a Covid vaccine, she's also just casually composed, co-produced and performed in a Christmas movie musical. So naturally Em and Michael will be spending a large portion of this episode deep diving into the seasonal wonder that is the Netflix movie ‘Dolly Parton's Christmas on the Square'. To start we'll need to talk about the outfits, we also need to talk about how Dolly is a VERY sparkly, glamourous, homeless woman, but...she's Dolly, so as if she isn't going to be Dolly. Christine Baranski is amazing as Lady Scrooge, but we need to state for the podcast record that Em is quoted as describing it as “really bad, it's bad, but it's so bad, it's good, it really is in that realm”. Em and Michael's excitement about Mariah Carey's upcoming Christmas special needs to be reflected too. Speaking of being in Santa season, Michael feels that everyone's been very eager to put up their Christmas decorations this year, something Em helped confirm when she dropped her “Jason Momoa in a Sparkly Leotard” Christmas extravaganza the previous week. There's also Rhonda Burchmore being omitted from performing at Carols by Candlelight and how much they loved that she publicly called them out about the snub. Then Michael takes a moment to talk a lot of smack about Carols in the Domain, because he feels that Carols by Candlelight is vastly superior. So secure the drip guard around the base of that lit candle, grab a bag of festively tainted popcorn, and settle in for all that tea to be spilt. Then we talk about the brand new Shawn Mendes documentary that left Em feeling largely underwhelmed, her take away being “he's clearly a young man who's just terrified all the time”. Sadly it wasn't a great rockumentary, especially when you compare it to the benchmark that Madonna set when she released her groundbreaking ‘Truth or Dare'/'In Bed with Madonna' doco. To see us out Em has an announcement about how Drake should absolutely never play Barack Obama, so secure those headphones of yours over your listen holes or hit the volume on your speakers and get some Emsolation happening.
