It's time for another CX Pulse Check to discuss current events and innovations in CX. In this illuminating conversation with Enrique Rubio, Founder at Hacking HR and Head of Global Community at Transform, and our host Jeannie Walters, we uncover how innovative organizations are finally bridging this gap through strategic use of data and technology.Fresh from their encounters at Qualtrics' X4 conference, Enrique and Jeannie explore how our experiences as consumers now directly shape our expectations as employees. They examine Apple's $500 billion US investment through this lens, discussing not just the business implications but what it means for talent development and organizational design. The conversation turns to Ford's data-driven approach to employee experience, revealing how established companies with strong legacies can use analytics to understand workforce needs around career development and digital readiness. Perhaps most provocatively, they challenge prevailing wisdom about remote work.Discover how connecting the dots between customer and employee experience can create competitive advantage where expectations are constantly evolving.About Enrique Rubio:Enrique is an HR, Tech and Future of Work expert, keynote speaker and founder of global communities. Enrique is currently an advisor to the community he built, Hacking HR, a global learning community operating at the intersection of future of work, technology, business and organizations, with thousands of members of all over the world; and the Head of Global Community at Transform, building a global community of local chapters covering every major city and region in the world. Enrique is one of the top 100 HR global influencers. Unrealistic Quick Fixes: Why Shortcuts in Road Maintenance Don't Work

Pavement Matters

In pavement management, quick fixes refer to reactive, surface-level treatments—such as thin overlays, minor patching, or superficial sealants—applied without addressing underlying structural or subgrade issues. Short-term budget constraints or schedule pressures often drive them, but they bypass critical processes like condition assessment, design verification, and material suitability. While these solutions may temporarily improve ride quality or visual appearance, they fail to resolve the root causes of deterioration, leading to accelerated fatigue, rutting, moisture ingress, and repeated intervention cycles. In this episode, We are joined by Firas Noun, Senior Project Engineer at Pavement Management Services, to unpack why these shortcuts lead to:Technical failures – early cracking, base instability, and structural failureEconomic waste – frequent rework, inflated lifecycle costs, and poor return on investmentLegal exposure – safety breaches, environmental non-compliance, and liability riskCompromised safety – increased hazards for road users due to degraded performanceWe also explore best practices for long-term performance:✅ Qualified engineering input✅ Durable, fit-for-purpose materials✅ Preventive maintenance and asset planning✅ Compliance and regular condition monitoringLet's start the year by committing to sustainable, evidence-based road maintenance—not reactive fixes.

Josh Butzbaugh, Senior Project Engineer at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, has been focusing his research on Heat Pump Water Heaters (HPWH). His research has helped to demonstrate the impact HPWH's can have on efficiency, carbon reduction, and peak demand response. The problem with implementing the technology is that replacement happens at a point of failure and consumers want a new water heater installed immediately, generally within 48 hours. Now that the inflation reduction act funding is offering a 10-year incentive to consumers and industry to install HPWHs the DOE has put forward a tool designed specifically to help plumbing contractors quickly assess the opportunity for successful installations. Josh shares his research and knowledge and guides us through the new heat pump water heater installation tool on the Building America Solution Center. Tamara talked to us about her family and growing up as a “big, awkward nerdy girl” in Prichard, Alabama, a suburb of Mobile, where we learned she graduated from The University of Alabama with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. She took us through her journey of narrowing down what engineering field she wanted to focus on, and what ultimately led her to choose the civil engineering path. She also talked to us about her involvement in professional organizations, such as ASCE and SWE, and how networking played a pivotal role in helping her land her first job. We delved into her passion for mentoring and volunteering and discussed how she gives back to her local community by being involved in non-profits such as Big Brothers Big Sisters of America and Habitat for Humanity. We talked about her role here at WGI and what a typical workday looks like for her, where we learned she is primarily focused on land development, which she described as “everything from the building to the street and sometimes the street.” Tamara let us in on her deep love for travel and shared several of the destinations she has visited and what's up next on her agenda. She also divulged some pro tips for traveling, interesting tours to check out, and how to properly immerse yourself in the culture of where you are visiting. Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the world and can be used to store, move, and deliver energy produced from other sources. Hydrogen technology isn't a new concept but due to high production costs and infrastructure latency issues, we haven't been able to capture and use the hydrogen for our energy needs until recently. Today, hydrogen fuel can be produced through several methods including natural gas reforming and electrolysis but how we store, transport and drive popularity around this element will ultimately determine whether or not we can meet our goal to hit Net-zero by 2050. On this episode of RENEWables, we sat down with David Slavin, Senior Project Engineer at Burns & McDonnell, to learn more about hydrogen technologies and the challenges associated with successfully implementing hydrogen into the renewable energy market, long-term and in large-scale. On this episode of What About Water? we take a look at the state of our rising seas from space, and learn what coastal communities on the ground are doing to adapt. Jay speaks with long-time colleague Steve Nerem, a principal investigator on NASA's Sea Level Change team.   We learn that by 2100, we could see around one meter of global sea level rise, but there is still time to stop the worst-case scenarios for future generations. We also hear from Matt Osler about the City of Surrey's Coastal Flood Adaptation Strategy and how researchers, First Nations, and municipalities in Southwest British Columbia are working together through the Living with Water project.  Steve Nerem is a professor of aerospace engineering at the University of Colorado, Boulder. He is a principal investigator on NASA's Sea Level Change team. He is also the associate director of the Colorado Center for Astrodynamics Research. His current research focuses on predicting global sea level rise and regional variations using satellite altimetry data from NASA missions such as TOPEX/Poseidon, Jason-1, Jason-2 and the soon-to-be-launched Jason-3. He also uses data from the satellite gravity mission GRACE and eventually the GRACE-Follow On mission. He received his Ph.D. in aerospace engineering from the University of Texas at Austin and has worked as a geophysicist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center and as an associate and assistant professor at the University of Texas, Austin. Matt Osler is a Senior Project Engineer in the Drainage Section at City of Surrey.  He joined the Engineering Department in 2006 and currently oversees the implementation of the City's Coastal Flood Adaptation Strategy.  He completed a Master of Business Administration from Simon Fraser University.

Resources mentioned: All Trails App Some of Kelly's key takeaways on structural/geotechnical monitoring services: Most of the monitoring services are introduced to the team when the design team and project owner are working on their permits for a new construction project, however, the bulk of the monitoring work is performed during the construction phase of a project when installing equipment and doing the active monitoring. Surveying vs. monitoring: our monitoring services report on changes of existing features to help advise the design team.
