The Simeone Museum in Philadelphia, PA is proud to present Le Mans 1959 The Underdog Champion, a demo day event celebrating the unlikely and impressive victory by a relatively small and underfunded Aston Martin team. At the time, the 24 hours of Le Mans was dominated by larger, highly financed organizations such as Ferrari and Jaguar, who had access to more advanced technology and greater resources. Despite this, Aston Martin managed to pull off a stunning upset victory at the 1959 race with their DBR1 piloted by drivers Roy Salvadori and Carroll Shelby. During this demo day, visitors had the chance to see three of the most popular cars in the museum in action, learn from the team of experts about their design and engineering, and discover more about the intense competition and challenges of Le Mans during the late 1950s. The featured exhibition included cars like the 1956 Jaguar D Type, 1958 Aston Martin DBR1, and the 1958 Ferrari 250 Testarossa. All car racing in the world, you could argue Le Mans is the biggest race in the world. Indy 500, that could be a challenge, but Le Mans, it's right at the top and it's certainly beyond any other sports car race, even though there are tremendous sports car races. If you'd like to learn more about the Simeone Foundation Museum or schedule a visit, be sure to check out www.simeone.org. Why is it so difficult to name a car? Some vehicle names sound great, like Testarossa, Countach, Viper, Interceptor, Charger, Defender, Gladiator and Raptor. Other names aren't very exciting, and sound way too contrived. The guys battle hybrid choices for Theodōr in Iceland, and address first-world problems for Patrick in LA. Bonus Track. Alfa Romeo 8C 2900 A de 1936, Oldsmobile Toronado y Saab Sonett.
IWP Ep27 Ed Kurtzman - Sandler, August West, Mansfield-Dunne. I recently sat down with Ed Kurtzman of Sandler wines, August West and Mansfield- Dunne wines to talk about his long and distinguished career in California wine. Besides the 3 wineries I already named he's made wine for Roar, Testarossa, Freeman and Fort Ross. He produces much of his wine out of the August West facility in San Francisco which also hosts other labels and winemakers working out of the facility. Ed is super knowledgeable about wine and noticed in about 2 seconds that the carpet in the lobby of the studio was corked. We discuss how he got his start and going off on his own as a consultant, how he likes to treat Pinot Noir and the other grapes he works with or would like to work with. No sé qué decirte…
Has any automotive facelift ever made a car better than its original design? This episode of the Carmudgeon show is sponsored by Lucid Motors, who has special lease and finance offers on available 2023 models of the Lucid Air Touring and Grand Touring. Visit lucidmotors.com for offer details. What Carmudgeon episode would complete without a discussion of Bruno Sacco's Mercedes masterpieces, including the W201, W124, W140, and R129? Then, there's the Ferrari lineage: 246 Dino to 308 GTB to 328 GTB to 348 tb to F355. And perhaps the most successful facelift ever, the Bangle-Butt BMW E65/E66 7-series — which was vastly more successful in showrooms after BMW"s "LCI," or "Life Cycle Impulse," BMW-speak for a facelift. There's the Mk1 Volkswagen Golf, with the Clipper Kit Cabriolet and the Citi versions, the BMW E30, the Jaguar Series III to XJ40 to X300 to X308. And what if all the Radwood-era cars only got prettier because of relaxed and harmonized bumper standards, like the W116 Mercedes S-Class did when it was replaced with the W126. Discussed is also the Lamborghini Countach, Renault R5 Turbo, Lancia Integrale and Evo. And of course the Ferrari Testarossa Monospecchio, turned into the Testarossa, the 512TR, and ultimately 512M. How about BMW's prime era of the E38 and E39 and E46? The original Chevrolet Cavalier? The ovoid Taurus? Or just the Miata NC Miata, in NC1, NC2, and NC3 revisions? It's all an interesting discussion and a fun brain-dump from two curmudgeonly car experts, one of whom probably needs a facelift himself soon. === The Carmudgeon Show is part of the Hagerty Podcast Network. ¡No me he equivocado!

This week on Miami Vice: Ira Stone (Bob Balaban) returns to Miami with a lot of (justified) paranoia and proof of the US involvement in Nicaragua when he sees (and has the tape) Americans posing as Sandinistas, touching on the real and timely issue of the Iran-Contra scandal. With this proof, he wants a Peabody and starts putting the word out that the tape is for sale, which in turn means the government is hot on his tail and Crockett, loyal as always, is worried his friend is back on the hard stuff and stretching the truth. Maynard (G Gordon Liddy) returns to get Stone once again before Stone's work foils his evildoing. Today's conversation is with John Temerian of Curated, a dealership in Miami specializing in vintage supercars. John's journey started at his father's Lamborghini service business where he grew from sweeping floors & cleaning cars to doing a clutch on a Testarossa at the age of 16. Eventually he would leave the proverbial nest to chase a lifestyle inspired by his father's big clients who had the money, who had the cars, and who he thought had the life he wanted. He hosted parties, supercar events, and eventually ended up running a successful exotic car rental company, Lou LaVie, but something was missing. He just wasn't fulfilled. And that's when serendipity stepped in and he realized that everything he had learned at a young age from his father, how to evaluate a car, what's correct about a vehicles history, was baked into his DNA and a valuable asset to collectors. Thus Curated was born. This is a great story about building a brand, sticking to your DNA, and focusing on exactly what you know as you run the entrepreneurial marathon. Please enjoy this chat with John Temerian of Curated.
