This week on the #MondayMile podcast, I'm joined by Team GB rugby player and Olympian Abi Burton. Abi shared the incredible story of her struggle with encephalitis, a rare autoimmune disease that left her in a medically induced coma. In the spring of 2022 Abi's teammates first noticed that she was acting ‘strange', and she was originally diagnosed with depression. She then began to have seizures and was sectioned with a misdiagnosis of stress induced psychosis. Eventually, she was diagnosed with encephalitis and put into a medically induced coma for 26 days. Whilst we stroll around West London, we get into the mind-boggling story of Abi's illness, how it affected her parents and how it has changed the way she views her life now. Abi's now firmly focussed on balancing her own rugby aspirations with coaching the next generation of players, as she hopes to be able to continue to shape young girls lives. It's super inspiring! Gail Porter's most recent incarnation is in comedy and storytelling related to her experiences of mental ill health, homelessness and hair loss - something she likes to share in the hope it helps other people. Emma Tracey grabbed an interview with her in Edinburgh recently. Sisters, Hermon and Heroda Berhane are fashion influencers. They are also identical twins and are deaf. They had no idea that sign language or Deaf culture existed until they arrived in the UK from their original home in Africa, but they soon took it all on board. Shocka is a Mental health advocate Ted Talk speaker, Artist and signed Poet. He originally started his career as an artist in 2008 alongside Double S and Vertex in a popular Grime group called Marvell. Shocka was popular within the grime scene amongst artist such as Tinie Tempah, Chip, Skepta and Diversity. During his time as an artist, Shocka worked with Ghetts' Grime collective "The Movement", alongside Devlin, Wretch 32, and Scorcher. Marvell was eventually signed by Grime label Risky Roadz in 2011. Over the years although Shocka experienced being sectioned on multiple occasions he has thrived, developing his advocacy in mental health and becoming an inspirational speaker, and poet. Shocka has just released his most recent music video "Don't be ashamed" where he shows his most recent experience of being within a mental health institution. Model Lucy Dawson was just 21 when she was wrongly sectioned for three months. Doctors believed she was experiencing a mental health breakdown, but she later learned she had encephalitis – a rare but serious condition in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the brain in a situation called “friendly fire”. While in hospital, an accident on the psychiatric ward led Lucy to become permanently disabled. "At one point I really thought my life was over, I was so depressed," she says. "But somehow I managed to turn it around - I was so unlucky, but at the same time I'm so lucky to have persevered." Now a successful model and disability advocate, Lucy talks about her time in hospital, why she likes to make sure her mobility aids are pictured on lingerie shoots, and how she deals with online trolls. Sadie has had her own struggles with mental health and has faced her biggest fear of being locked up and over come her own experience of being Sectioned for 28 days when things deteriorated. She tells Jo all about the tools she now has in place to face those fears when they come back and how she has been through Recovery and stayed sober for four years when her anxiety peaked and she hit rock bottom. As a mother to four children, Sadie is hugely maternal and even adopted a child in Africa, called Lucky who she mentors and is writing film scripts together with to help give his life a boost. She credits her mothers introduction to yoga at a young age as a huge saving grace as well as her meditation practice and time reconnecting to her higher power through the serenity prayer and time on her matt. Adam talks to Haleema Nawid, a mental health advocate who experiences severe mental health issues to the point of suicidal thoughts and clinical depression. Heleema even found herself homeless and on the receiving end of ambivalence and prejudice as a result of her mental health issues. She now campaigns to educate and inform people about their options regarding mental health and where they can find their voice.
