--- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/john-vargas-foto/message

What's the Best FStop? Do You Need to Stop Your Lens Down?

The Phoblographer

If you told me years ago that nearly every lens on the market made today would be super sharp wide open, I'd be incredibly excited. But if you also told me that a lens could be too sharp, I wouldn't believe you. I mean, how is that possible? Years ago, you'd just consider the best fstop on a lens based on sharpness. And these days, that's not necessarily the case. Photography has changed, and people want something different. So, with over 12 years of testing lenses under our belt, we're going to talk more about the best fstop and how it's changed over the years. How it Used to Be: The Story of the Best Fstop When I first started the Phoblographer over 12 years ago, lenses were much different. They were mostly developed for film cameras and then were ported over. Very few were developed with the idea of being digital first. And back then, you used to have to stop the lens down to get to the best fstop. On full-frame 35mm, it used to be around f8 to f11. It varied based on which medium format option you were using, but you'd try to get the same equivalent. This also applied to APS-C and Four Thirds sensors. Shooting a lens wide open set you up for a host of problems back then: Your lens would be very soft wide open, which is nice these days. Your lens could have a whole bunch of color fringing, which can be seen as lens character these days. Vignetting was abound, which is easily correctable these days. You'd also probably not get your subject in focus because DSLR and Film SLR autofocus wasn't so great. Then things changed. And Then The Zeiss Otus Line Happened I remember that there was a short period of time where a lot changed. A bunch of tsunamis and storms destroyed lots of factories out there. Then, oddly enough, the industry bounced back with curiously good optics. They came to Zeiss and Sigma first. The Zeiss Otus lens lineup was pretty much unbeatable. The Sigma Art lens lineup was also unbeatable for image quality. Then Sony got it, Tamron caught on, Nikon, Tokina, etc. Optics just got a ton better. This was incredibly curious because Zeiss specifically started to market that you didn't necessarily need to stop the Otus lens lineup down. They went about showing the press tons of MTF charts where the Zeiss 55mm f1.4 Otus lens would have equivalent sharpness of the nearest competing lenses. However, the Otus was doing it wide open while the competition was doing it at f5.6 or f8. It was remarkable technology; if not incredibly flawed. Zeiss did what they do with an insane price tag, no weather sealing, and a few other things. Then Sigma's 50mm f1.4 Art started to outdo the Otus. Sigma has always been strong with clinical image quality at the cost of build quality, character, and autofocus speed. It was the same back then as it is today. So by all means, back then, Zeiss started to say that the best fstop is shot wide open. That started to change the rest of the industry. Combine this with the rising megapixel count on camera sensors and improved flash technology and you've got a winner. Today, What is the Best FStop? It's hard today to find a lens that isn't sharp wide open. Lensbaby purposely does this, and that's awesome. But otherwise, all the other camera and lens manufacturers strive to get sharp wide-open performance. By all means, the best fstop and all it means has changed since then. There used to be the idea of the sweet spot: which referred to when the lens was at its sharpest. And today, arguably, it's more about a balance between pleasing bokeh and sharpness. It depends on what sensor format you're using. But generally speaking, most photographers think the best fstop is either wide open, f4, or f5.6. Lenses are super sharp wide open, and honestly, most of us on staff here rarely have good reasons to want to stop down unless the exposure calls for it. High megapixels on camera sensors mean that much more value is given to a lens. Combine that with flash and what specular highlights do, and you've got a wi...

[Whitney Davis, "How to Make Analogies in a Digital Age" in October Magazine, Summer 2006, n.117, p.71-98.] #lomonte #fotografodimatrimonio #aspirantifotografi

Today’s show is all about our experiences in shooting the comet NEOWISE. And really my hope is that we’ll be able to inspire the listeners to get out there and shoot the heavens regardless if there’s a comet or not, but also, when the next comet comes around hopefully they’ll be prepared.  Back in the catalog, May 10 and 13 episodes, we did a two-part series on beginning astrophotography. Those skills are valuable for sure as well, but in this episode, it’s about the fun, the techniques and the results. So let’s get to it. I should mention that the images will be in the show notes and on the podcast listener fb group. I’ll also share them to the Master Photography Podcast facebook group so you can see them there as well if you’d like.  Whitman Mission (Brent) ISO 1600  -  24mm  -  f/4  -  13 seconds  -  Multi Frame Composite. Canon 5D4 This is a blend of two images. With one image processed twice. So in Photoshop it was actually three images. I photographed the wagon while lighting it with my cell phone light. Then I blended those two together to make a seamless image of the wagon nicely lit. Then I processed one of those frames for the sky, making it a bit brighter, and then used a luminosity mask to select the different portions and blend them together. I then did a custom control lighting adjustment layer to tone down the areas in the foreground that got too bright. Random Oklahoma 1 (Tom) This is a composite of two images, one for the foreground and one for the sky. The foreground was shot at 24mm, f/8.0, ⅙ sec, and ISO 100. The sky was a combination of 10 images, stacked to reduce noise. They were shot at 105mm, f/4.0, 5 sec, and ISO 3200 (5 images) and ISO 6400 (5 images). Random Oklahoma 2 (Tom) This is another composite, with the sky composed the same as the previous photo mentioned. The windmill was shot at 105mm, f/8.0, ⅕ sec, and ISO 100. I chose a composite here so I could get some detail on the windmill. Windmill (Brent) ISO 800  -  78mm  -  f/4  -  20 seconds. Mounted on a star tracker. This causes the foreground element to blur a bit but it’s only noticeable when really zoomed in. I still have yet to finish processing this one. I got the foreground much lighter (with a flash light) and I plan to blend it in, we’ll see how that transition goes! Given the movement likely to have some problems. I also made a time lapse on this one and posted a video on making the timelapse to YouTube. Over the wheat field (Brent) ISO 6400 (1600)  -  18mm  -  f/3.5  -  10 seconds This is a composite that was loads of fun to make. I’m an “ISO SNOB” usually, meaning I want to use the lowest ISO possible. For this one I took two exposures. One at 6400 ISO for the sky, and another at 1600 for the wheat. I used a flash light to bump up the light in the 1600 ISO shot and simply did an overlay in PS. It became it’s own luminosity bump of sorts. The end result was higher technical quality in the wheat but also still capturing the comet real nice in the sky. I talked about a similar shot on the Master Photography Podcast that published Aug 6.  Mt Hood and NEOWISE (Kirk) 7/11/20 Sony a7iii Sigma Art 105mm f/1.4 3200 ISO f/2.5 3.2 sec Stack of 15 photos Sky processed separately from foreground.  I wanted to get a photo of the comet where it was a prominent feature of the image. That meant I would need to use a longer than a standard 50mm lens. After seeing online photos taken with everything from ultra wides to 300mm, I decided I wanted to use a lens around 135mm.  With that goal in mind, I started to think about what kind of foreground I could use. I knew the comet would be at a compass direction between N and NE. The first foreground that came to mind was Mt Hood. I searched Google Maps, Google Earth, Stellarium, and PlanIt Pro for Photographers for several hours. I found an excellent location that was 30 miles from the top of Hood. A rented Sigma Art 105 mm f/1.4 lens was used for all the frames. I stopped the lens down to f/2.5 to sharpen the corners of the shots. I used PhotoPills to determine the longest shutter speed I could use and still get the stars to be points. And then, I set my camera’s built-in intervalometer to take 15 images. I took the photos at around 3:20 am as the comet passed over the top.  For processing, my friend Marybeth Kiczenski, shelbydiamondstar on IG and FB, offered to process it for me. Since I love the look of her astro landscape photos, I jumped at her offer. She used Sequator to stack the frames for the sky. She then stacked the same images in Photoshop for the foreground. She then loaded both as layers into Photoshop and applied a mask to blend the two. Next was color grading it using Photoshop’s “Selective Color” function. She flattened the image and then used several functions in Nik Collection. Usually, she uses Topaz Denoise, but she felt this photo didn’t need it. I’m super happy with Marybeth’s results. I think it speaks for itself! Shooting the Perseid Meteors by Kirk Keyes The Perseid meteor shower runs from mid-July to near the end of August. The peak of this year’s shower occurs around August 11, 12, and 13th. There is a quarter Moon up for the latter half of the nights, so that means you’ll want to shoot from when astronomical twilight ends until a bit before the Moonrise. So start around 10 pm until about midnight or 1 am on those nights. You can still shoot after the Moon rises - it’s just that the dimmer meteors will not stand out as much. But the bright ones will still look spectacular!  Photographing meteors is actually not too difficult. You’ll want a camera with manual settings, a wide and fast lens, a tripod, and an intervalometer to trigger the camera.  The Perseid shower is one of the brightest and has one of the greatest number of meteors during the year. They radiate from the NE part of the sky, and can be seen mostly all night from the northern hemisphere. Look for them to stream away from the constellation Perseus. You don’t know where that is, that’s OK. I don’t really either!  So look for the big “W” near the Little Dipper - that’s the constellation Cassiopeia. It’s close to Perseus. You don’t need to aim your camera there, that’s just where the meteors will generally appear to originate. But they will appear all across the sky.  Find as dark of a location as you can as you’ll see more meteors with darker skies. If you can find a foreground subject, that will add interest to your photo, but you will probably catch more meteors if you simply aim the camera overhead! Then put your camera on the tripod and put on a fast and wide lens. Something like a 24mm or wider on full-frame (16mm for APS-C). Then set it to its widest aperture. Adjust your ISO to 1600, and focus on the stars.  Then take some test shots at 10, 15, 20, and 30 seconds. Look at the histogram for each one, and use the exposure time that places the hump on the histogram about 1/3rd from the left side. Don’t use one that’s too far to the middle, as you’ll blow out the sky in your images.  Then, here’s the hard part - set your intervalometer to shoot shot after shot, and let it go! Bring a lawn chair, a blanket or sleeping bag, and something warm to drink. And lay back and watch the show as your camera shoots away! Later, look through your photos. Hopefully you caught some good ones. If it’s a good shower this year with numerous meteors captured, you can blend them onto one image. It makes a cool photo, and you will probably see that the meteors actually do radiate from one location in the sky.

We used to dream of all the things we could and should 3D print and today we’re actually making them! Kris Steward joins Roger Cicala to discuss how a 3D printer he bought from Kickstarter lead to a room full of printers here at Lensrentals. He tells us the items he’s making, from beefing up battery doors to figuring out workarounds and bringing new items for Lensrentals into existence. It started with making our own gaskets and we’re currently printing 67 unique items. They range from things for products we couldn’t source for repair purposes, we’d make to ensure the product you rented was as close to how it would be if you bought it. Gear mentioned in this episode: Printers: Prusa Mk 3S Prusa Mk 3S MMU 2.0 Materials: PETG, (polyethylene terephthalate) Which has a high melt point so it’s high enough we can ship it and it won’t deform. Software: Kris recommends using a parametric based CAD software TinkerCad is free and what Kris started with Fusion360 is where Kris has settled and what he uses currently To get started yourself on a less immersive level: Check your cities local maker spaces if you’re looking to get something 3D printed for the first time. 3Dhubs is based out of Chicago and professionally prints for you Shapeways 3D prints professionally and ships out of Europe Spotlight on the Panasonic S1 Joey loves that the tech previously available in only M4/3 is now available to use in a full-frame camera. It’s a big beefy camera which feels great in hand Buttons are all laid out smartly EVF is nice and clear and bright Inbody stabilization is everything you’ve come to expect from Panasonic and works incredibly well. Joey can handhold shots down to 1/4 a second. AF and tracking work really well and better than the SL1 Important to tweak it to your style of shooting before heading out into the field, which is easy to do With the advent of the L-mount, there will be more lenses, such a the Sigma Art and Leica L mount and M-mount too! Shannon is a photographer in a very small town and says word of mouth is so important. You have to set, and then exceed, expectations. Shannon is fired up about how good people are in our industry and how willing everyone is to help. Shannon didn’t go to conferences until a couple of years ago, but she did participate in online forums (I Love Photography). Shannon would either save the 1k for a Sigma Art 105mm, or spend it on sales education. Or a Denny’s background. You’ll have to listen in to get that inside joke. Don’t miss the best advice Shannon ever “received” and the advice she has to share. [00:06] Welcome to from nothing to profit a photographer’s podcast with Matt and Kayak where each week they talk to photographers about what is working in their business now so you can swipe those ideas and grow your business faster. [00:22] Hey everybody, welcome to the podcast. So I’m really excited. I have my friend Shannon Ashley on from northern Alabama and we have a really cool story where we met, I mean it was I guess over a year ago now. We met at after dark, um, and we’ve been fast friends ever since. And so we hung out at sink this year and next year we’re speaking together at sync. And in some aspects I think like you’re like my soulmate of a friend because you’re hilarious and you always make my day brighter and make me laugh pretty hard. So thanks so much for being on the podcast. [00:57] Well thank you for asking me. [00:59] Yeah. So Shannon, we are, I’m excited to have you too. [01:03] Oh, you guys are both great. I’m excited to be here. [01:06] Yeah. So here’s, let me tell you a little bit more. So it’s kind of, this is how, this is how I met Shannon. So I was, I went to after dark and I was doing like this walk about with Marcy, Marcy and Christy and Shannon was there and I hadn’t met her at all, but she wasn’t, she was there and um, I was talking to Marcy and Marcy is like, yeah, you know, like we’re okay, but have you seen Shannon’s work? And I was like, no, I don’t know who Shannon is. So like as we’re walking around downtown in the middle of Wisconsin, I’m like looking at her Instagram and like dialed lighting, you know, like I would say you’re probably one of the better photographers, Shannon. I’ve ever seen it off. Um, off camera lighting for sure. [01:41] No. Well thank you. Yeah, I didn’t even realize that. Didn’t realize you were looking at me at after dark except, but they are now. Yeah. But I did not realize that. So that’s, that’s really awesome because you’re so good. You’re in Cape Cod is it’s caught. Yes. [01:58] Hi. Yes it is fine. [02:00] Okay. You guys are both great. So that is a huge compliment coming from you. Yeah. [02:06] Well thanks. Um, okay, so let’s just kind of jump into the questions and kind of go from there. [02:10] Yeah, yeah, for sure. Huh. So Shannon, we’re going to start at the beginning here. And so, um, can you share a little bit of, uh, like your expertise or what you feel like you’re known for? [02:22] I feel like I’m acting, I am known for lighting. Um, you mean in the photography world or with the Bobbitt yes, yes. In the photography world. Yeah. I would say it’s sliding. I actually teach lighting at the modern senior.... Support this podcast

Soy Fran Valverde y me acompaña Pere Larrègula.

On this week’s episode of the B&H Photography Podcast, we’re talking gear—specifically, the latest gear announced at the two most recent trade shows, the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), and Wedding and Portrait Photographers International (WPPI). In addition to a summary of some of the items announced at CES, like the Panasonic Lumix GH5S, we speak with B&H writers Shawn Steiner and Liz Groeschen, who are currently in attendance at WPPI.  Steiner gives us the lowdown on some of the big-ticket items and mentions many of the new lenses announced at this important conference, and Groeschen offers her opinion on the latest cameras, discusses items of specific interest to wedding photographers, and gives us a sense of the activity around the B&H booths. Some of the cameras we discuss are the new Sony a7 III Mirrorless Digital Camera, the Fujifilm X-H1, the Panasonic Lumix DC-GX9, the Canon EOS M50 Mirrorless Camera, the Pentax K-1 Mark II DSLR and the Polaroid Originals OneStep2 Instant Film Camera. In terms of lenses, we mention the new set of Sigma Art lenses for Sony E mount cameras, the Tokina FiRIN 20mm f/2 FE AF lens, the Rokinon SP 50mm f/1.2 lens for Canon EF, the Zeiss Loxia 25mm f/2.4,and others.  Two new flashes made our critic’s picks: the new Canon Speedlite 470EX-AI with auto intelligent bounce head, and the Sony HVL-F60RM Wireless Radio Flash, as did a handful of paper and presentation material. Join us for this informative episode. Guests: Shawn Steiner and Liz Groeschen

Soy Fran Valverde y me acompaña Pere Larrègula. Muchas gracia y no cambiéis.
