Climate disasters are on the rise, and as these events rise in both frequency and severity, the fight against climate change is also becoming more and more urgent. Canada has a wealth of passionate, inspiring cleantech innovators who are working hard to develop, deploy, and scale technologies and solutions that will help Canada and the world eliminate emissions, waste, and achieve a net zero economy. However, many innovators in Canada struggle to secure capital, attract customers or industry partners, and deploy their solutions on the open market. Which is where accelerators like Foresight come in. Through mentorship, education, industry and investor connections, and networking events, our programs have supported more than 1,000 Canadian cleantech ventures which have generated more than $439 million in revenue, created nearly 8,000 jobs, and have raised more than $1.4 billion dollars in funding. On this episode of Cleantech Forward, Foresight CEO and host Jeanette Jackson is joined by Foresight Canada's Senior Director of Market Transformation and the Senior Director of Cleantech with Social Innovation Canada, Barnabe Geis, and Cycle Momentum CEO Patrick Gagné. Together the three explore why these programs are indispensable for Canadian cleantech entrepreneurs, the driving forces behind cleantech acceleration in Canada, and what we can do to collectively accelerate cleantech adoption.Barnabe is the Senior Director of Market Transformation with Foresight Canada. He works to develop programs and partnerships that remove barriers, leverage policy developments, and grow market opportunities to accelerate the adoption and scale up of clean technologies. He is also the Senior Director of Cleantech with Social Innovation Canada, where he works to advance the development and adoption of clean technologies through social innovation, education, research, partnerships, and ecosystem development. While with the Centre for Social Innovation, Barnabe founded, and was the Executive Director of, Climate Ventures, an organization that fast-tracked the success of early-stage entrepreneurs, innovators, and leaders developing and implementing solutions to the climate crisis. Patrick Gagné is the CEO of Cycle Momentum, and a Board Member at Startup Montréal, as well as Zone Agtech. Patrick brings 25 years of experience in entrepreneurship and technology to his position as CEO, and has a thorough understanding of what businesses need in order to succeed. He has held positions with the Laval Smart Mobility Incubator and Accelerator, Startup Genome, and the InnoCité Montreal accelerator. In this episode, we take a discerning look at Startup Genome's Annual Ecosystem Report, seeking to comprehend what the data reveals about Austin's innovation landscape, while also critically examining and challenging it where discrepancies arise. Forrest Wright, Research Assessment Lead at Startup Genome, joins us to decode the metrics and shed light on Austin's present and future trajectory in the innovation sector.Episode HighlightsStartup Genome's insightful report evaluates 290+ global startup ecosystems by scrutinizing six pivotal metrics: performance, funding, market reach, connectedness, talent, and knowledge.Despite a global 35% decline in startup funding in 2022, an unexpected trend emerged - the amount of funding per startup saw a significant surge, with AI cementing its position as a leading sector.Singapore's meteoric rise in the rankings from 18th to 8th is attributed to an influx of venture capital funding, the creation of 4 billion-dollar exits, and the emergence of 18 unicorns, including Coda Payments, which secured an impressive $690M in Series C. Demonstrating resilience and harboring potential for growth, Austin holds steady at 25th in the rankings despite a 30% fall in large-scale exits, countered by its burgeoning count of 12 unicorns.Breyer Capital, Bedrock Capital, and 8VC are among the heavyweights moving to Austin, signaling a strong belief in its ecosystem. This migration starkly contrasts Startup Genome's more retrospective rankings and the forward-looking confidence expressed by these industry leaders. What's next Austin? “The future is really bright. I think it actually bodes really well for Austin is you have these stalwart AI companies already there like SparkCognition, Mythic, and Tethr. I think they've all raised north of a hundred million dollars and some of them much more than that. And so I think this is a lot of built-in institutional knowledge that's going to be a real advantage for Austin compared to a lot of companies that are starting now to kind of jump on the bandwagon. Austin's going to have a real advantage there.”Episode LinksForrest Wright: LinkedInStartup Genome: Website, LinkedIn, TwitterStartup Genome Global Startup Ecosystem Report 2023 Austin Next Links: Website, X/Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn

Startup Genome, the world-leading innovation policy advisory and research firm, and the Global Entrepreneurship Network (GEN) on Tuesday launched the 2022 Global Startup Ecosystem Report (GSER) at London Tech Week, introduced by JF Gauthier, Founder and CEO of Startup Genome. In its 10th year, the GSER is the world's most comprehensive, data-driven research on startups with 280+ entrepreneurial innovation ecosystems, rankings of the leading 140 ecosystems, and 3 million startups analysed. Key highlights from #GSER2022 on the global startup situation Since 2012, global average Series A rounds have tripled to more than $18 million. Since the pandemic, tech companies grew 2.3 times more than their non-tech counterparts. A record 540 companies achieved unicorn status in 2021, up from 150 in 2020, with 113 ecosystems producing at least one $1 billion+ behemoth. Nineteen ecosystems — including Brisbane, Luxembourg, Santiago-Valparaiso, and Ho Chi Minh City — achieved their first unicorns in 2021. North America continues to dominate the Global Rankings, with 47% of the top 30 ecosystems. Asia comes in second with 30%. In North America, exits over $50 million made up a total of $698 billion in 2021. In Asia, they made up $531 billion. Seoul entered the global top 10 ecosystems for the first time. Helsinki has risen more than 20 places from last year to #35, Detroit moved up 13 places to #40 and Oslo moved up 16 places to #58. Japan has seen significant growth, with a 52.3% increase in Tokyo's startup ecosystem value (from $40.7 billion in 2020 to $62 billion in 2021) and Kyoto, now the country's second-largest such ecosystem, experiencing an 11% growth within the last year ($424 million in 2020 to $471 million in 2021). The 2022 GSER found that around 95% of the UAE's firms are SMEs or startups, and they account for more than 40% of the country's GDP. Additionally, the city of Sharjah, home of MENA's fastest-growing technopark, saw its startup ecosystem more than double in value (from less than $100 million in 2020 to $208 million in 2021) despite having early stage funding numbers below the global average. Also in MENA, Cairo has seen a 156% increase in total VC funding round dollar amount from 2020 to 2021, and from 2017 to 2021, the overall number of VC funding rounds in the ecosystem increased by 60%. Brazil experienced exponential growth both overall and in its largest city. São Paulo saw an increase in early-stage funding from $902 million in 2020 to $1.5 billion in 2021, and an overall increased ecosystem value by 122% ($1.5 billion in 2020 to $108 billion in 2021). Overall, the country reported $6.4 billion in venture funding from January to October 2021, tripling the amount raised in all of 2019. “This 10th-anniversary edition of the Global Startup Ecosystem Report reflects on how ecosystems have evolved since 2012,” shares JF Gauthier, Founder & CEO of Startup Genome. “As the first, and still the only data-driven primary research on startup and ecosystem success factors, innovators and policy leaders depend on our objective data and specialist insights. We look forward to providing further advisory economic and employment contributions as Startup Genome remains a key advisor for accelerating entrepreneurial performance and growth.” The #GSER2022 ranks startup ecosystems on seven Success Factors, including performance and talent. The same five ecosystems remain at the top of the ranking as in 2020 and 2021, but Beijing has dropped one place, with Boston taking its former place at #4. Silicon Valley is #1, followed by New York City and London tied at #2, Boston at #4, and Beijing at #5. “This research reveals what it takes for cities to compete in the race to the top as destinations for startup talent and investment. The GSER is both a guide to innovation performance and a cue to leaders to grow their local innovation ecosystems with evidence-based strategies, not gut,” said Jonathan Ortmans, Founder and President...

We do not always realize it, but we are living in two economies: digital and analog. In fact, depending on who you ask, 2020 was either the best year for business or the worst, and a lot has to do with how these two orders contrast and relate. Today, 9 out of the 10 largest companies in the world are in technology, and many began as small startups not very long ago. Meanwhile, new startup ecosystems are developing and causing a surge of fast-growing tech companies that illustrate a massive global economic transition. Arnobio Morelix is a Brazilian based in Silicon Valley. Formerly the Chief Innovation Officer at Startup Genome, he advised governments and private organizations across 35 countries. He has authored research and analysis with Stanford University, the World Economic Forum, and others, and has been widely featured in global publications like the New York Times and the Economist, to name a few. Now the Chief Data Scientist at Inc. Magazine, Arnobio also recently wrote "Rebooted", a book that dives into tons of future-looking topics including post-pandemic economies, the tech butterfly effect, and the unintended consequences of major technological change. In this chat, we talk about a few of these topics and other insights Arnobio has accumulated over years of studying startup ecosystems. This year's edition of Startup Genome, published on June 25, brings two key results for the Serbian IT scene - the startup market of Belgrade and Novi Sad reaches a value of 502 million dollars, and Serbia ranks fifth among the analyzed countries in the number of blockchain developers. This research shows us not only how our ecosystem positions itself in comparison to other startup ecosystems in the world, but also allows us to map its key strengths and the weakest points. The guest of the 12 episode of k/talks is Vukasin Stojkov, one of the founders and director of Startit Center. Vukasin is certainly one of the pioneers in the development of the local startup ecosystem. Startit Center was among the first organizations which educated about the IT sector, new software and digital systems, new trends, values and ways of thinking. With Vukasin, I tried to get deeper into the reasons for the success of the local startup ecosystem, but also to peek into the pockets of its untapped potentials. We also touched on the Tesla Nation, a project started with the goal of choosing the best technology inventors and professionals of Serbian heritage and connecting them to partners from all around the world, inspired by the vision and ambition of Nikola Tesla. This episode is in Serbian.

This has been a tremendous accomplishment, as it puts Belgrade and Novi Sad as the only such hub on the map between Estonia and Israel. We talked about the early years, different factors that enable or hamper growth and many other things.Zoja also co-authored a research published by Digital Serbia Initiative, that tracked how the Covid-19 pandemic and the accompanying economic crisis affected the local digital ecosystem. Contrary to what many commentators suggested, the digital community suffered greatly across the globe. Lots of ideas for startup ecosystem builders to discuss, debate, adapt and adopt in the 2018 Startup Genome report. It's one of the few examinations of what world-class ecosystems look like and how to get there—and something that every ecosystem organization should read and consider. Some of the topics discussed on this episode: Local Connectedness: New in this year's report and a critical component of all strong ecosystems. We give a big thumbs up to the report's contention that "collisions" and events aren't enough to build a startup community. Subsectors: Startup Genome looks at the growth of "deep tech"—technology subsectors that are typically more research-heavy and attract older, more experienced and educated founders. They see these subsectors as an opportunity for smaller ecosystems to become leaders. We look at what they identify as the subsector strengths of Canada's ecosystems. Founder Mindset: Are there attitudes and traits that are more likely to lead to strong startup founders or business builders? Startup Genome has introduced a new factor that looks at what traits help founders succeed. And we look at why we still think the Startup Genome reports are must-reads even though we give little credence to their rankings—and why we worry that the Ontario government may be latching on to the wrong takeaways from these reports. On this week’s podcast: For the last five years, Startup Genome has been assessing and ranking startup ecosystems around the world for its Global Startup Ecosystem reports. They recently published their third report, and this week we talk to their CEO, JF Gauthier, about the factors they assess and the metrics they use in determining the rankings. JF also talks about the startup ecosystem lifecycle model Startup Genome has developed to determine where a region is in its development and what it needs to do next to continue to grow. And we discuss the role of government in growing ecosystems and why JF thinks they need to show a greater sense of urgency to participate in what he calls the "global startup revolution." To start the show, I discuss how a ranking like Startup Genome's is a challenging undertaking by looking at just two of the many factors they consider in their assessment.
