In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Vanessa Chan, DOE's Chief Commercialization Officer, to discuss the challenges of commercializing new clean energy technologies. Her office has helped develop a common vocabulary among stakeholders (“adoption readiness levels”) and concentrated the attention of public and private capital on certain key technologies (“pathway to liftoff” reports). It's wonky stuff, but it has transformed and turbocharged DOE's commercialization efforts. This is a public episode. 286 Choosing and Creating Your Own Community   Connection and choosing the community that will help you grow and thrive is vital to self growth and peace of mind, especially when you are going through major changes in life or are thinking of how you want to spend your life.  In this episode Sarah Elkins and Vanessa Jupe discuss the importance of community and connection while navigating life and its changes.    Highlights Planning for the future and enjoying the time you have.  Connection and support are vital to every stage in life. If you don't feel like you belong in a community you can make your own.   Quotes “It took me a year before I was like, “Okay we're gonna do the community event.” I was just so worried about it I just didn't want it to become a negative thing, because I've seen so much of that and I want what we're building to be incredibly supportive.” “It's tough because there are people and things that you love, and you're like “Ah, well, now that I have a kid I'm going to be making different decisions than I might have if it was just me.”.” “There are some very painful things that I experienced in my life that I don't know if I've learned a lesson from yet, and there were things that I was scared about that were awesome! And I was like “Oh, I learned that I could do that thing that I thought was scary.” Right? So it's not always the most painful.”   Dear Listeners it is now your turn, Your stories don't define you, the things that happened to you or in your life that's not what defines you. It's how you talk about those things, It's how you choose your internal dialogue, and the stories you're telling so that you can shift them from maybe being a victim to being your own guide and hero. And remember there are lots of guides out there just waiting to be in your corner and support you, and I just have one request Listeners; It doesn't have to be when you're having a big decade birthday, or when you're about to empty nest, or some random arbitrary part of your life that you can do the program that Vanessa's husband created for them, where you think about the moments in the last ten years that are really meaningful, that have shaped you into who you are today, and start thinking about what moments you want over the next ten years, you can do that today it doesn't have to be a big decade birthday or new years eve, I encourage you to think about that. And, as always, thank you for listening.    About Vanessa Vanessa Jupe founded Leva after experiencing the challenges of breastfeeding, being a working mom, and finding work-life balance firsthand. About Sarah "Uncovering the right stories for the right audiences so executives, leaders, public speakers, and job seekers can clearly and actively demonstrate their character, values, and vision." In my work with coaching clients, I guide people to improve their communication using storytelling as the foundation of our work together. What I've realized over years of coaching and podcasting is that the majority of people don't realize the impact of the stories they share - on their internal messages, and on the people they're sharing them with. My work with leaders and people who aspire to be leaders follows a similar path to the interviews on my podcast, uncovering pivotal moments in their lives and learning how to share them to connect more authentically with others, to make their presentations and speaking more engaging, to reveal patterns that have kept them stuck or moved them forward, and to improve their relationships at work and at home. The audiobook, Your Stories Don't Define You, How You Tell Them Will is now available! For this week's COBT, we had the pleasure of hosting Sasha Mackler, Executive Director of the Energy Program at the Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC). The BPC is a Washington, DC-based think tank that prioritizes one thing above all else: GETTING THINGS DONE. That's a mission we can all stand behind. The team at BPC work on what they've defined as critical policy issues for the US including health, immigration, and infrastructure to name a few, by bringing together all relevant stakeholders and finding areas of alignment for action. We were connected with Sasha a few weeks ago and think you will appreciate his background and perspective. We had a fantastic session! Sasha first provides key background on the BPC including their core mission, set of policy issues, and history. The Energy Program is the longest standing policy area the BPC has worked on and currently has ten staff members dedicated to the effort. In our conversation we also cover the necessity for the US to be well positioned in energy technology, why 2050 and 2030 are both important targets, where Sasha sees the possibility for progress after the midterms, Sasha's advice to COP 27 delegates including a reminder that the public sector cannot drive the energy transition alone, how to find a way to bring the oil and gas industry more fully into the policy conversation, the importance of educating the public on energy issues, and more. We wrap with Sasha's view of the world in the next ten years. Mike Bradley kicked us off with an update on commodity and equity markets, noting key themes from earnings and oil majors outperformance this quarter. He also flagged a few key events including the potential for windfall profits tax on oil companies and the release of two recent reports, OPEC World Oil Outlook 2045 and IEA World Energy Outlook. Colin Fenton expanded on the OPEC and IEA reports with a side-by-side look at both. You will hear him reference the interesting contrast of producers talking about consumers (the OPEC report) and conversely consumers talking about producers (the IEA report). Brett Rampal also joined today's session and added his power/electricity perspective to the discussion. Thank you, as always, for your support and friendship!

DP Marketing Services provides digital marketing solutions for HVAC, plumbing, and other home services companies so they can produce quality leads and generate higher profits. He was previously the Acting Director of the Center for Technology Commercialization at Oklahoma State University and is the host of the Blue Collar CEO podcast. In this episode: What does it take to have an effective marketing strategy? If you don't have your operations systems in place, marketing won't be an adequate driver for more business. What do you need to know to make sure you're optimizing your marketing strategy?  Having spent many years in the marketing profession, Ryan Redding knows that operations are the key drivers of ROI. All functions of a company have to work together in a system for the business to thrive. Marketing can create awareness and drive leads, but your company's operations must convert those leads into paying customers. All the marketing your company does will only make a difference if you have the proper system in place to handle those leads. In this episode of the Systems Simplified podcast, Adi Klevit interviews Ryan Redding, the Founder and CEO of DP Marketing Services, to talk about the five most common marketing myths and why having the proper operations system in place is vital. Ryan explains why marketing does not solve all business problems, why the human element is essential when creating a marketing strategy, and how marketing is a systemized process where many components work together.

enVerde converts organic waste into sustainable clean energy. The Office for Technology Commercialization (OTC) is the office at the University of Minnesota whose mission is to facilitate the transfer of technology to licensees. This allows for the development of new products and services that benefit the public good. It also fosters economic growth and generates revenue. Since 2006, the University has spun out 170 startup companies. But there is a challenge. Technology transfer is not simple. For a venture to be successful, it must be desirable (the market wants it), feasible (an organization can produce a market solution), and viable (the cost structure and returns are sustainable). There is a vast desert from license to commercialization. Research can create an idea that is desirable but is not viable or sustainable. It takes time to prove out and commercialize a technology. The time and effort to commercialize a technology is often called the commercialization gap. On today’s episode of Social Entrepreneur, we talk to Dave Goebel, CEO and Founder of enVerde. enVerde has licensed a thermochemical catalytic technology from the University of Minnesota. The catalyst converts organic material into heat energy. enVerde provides circular economy solutions by repurposing carbon-containing waste into clean, sustainable energy and chemicals. The Problem with Organic Waste Every day, the average American generates 4.4 pounds of waste. That includes paper, plastics, yard trimmings, food waste, wood, rubber, leather, textiles, and more. At the same time, the US Energy Information Administration predicts nearly 50% increase in world energy usage by 2050. What if we could use organic waste to provide clean, renewable energy? That’s the promise of enVerde. They are addressing the nearly infinite amount of organic waste and the growing need for energy. They do so in an environmentally friendly, cost-effective manner. Waste becomes a resource instead of a problem. “Waste is stored energy and we have a clean way to liberate, free, that energy for our use,” says enVerde Founder and CEO, Dave Goebel. “We economically transform organic wastes into a product called syngas. We also produce heat in the process. Both syngas and heat can be power sources for making electricity. “Syngas is also convertible into new clean fuels like hydrogen, methanol, or dimethyl ether. It can be green precursor for other chemical processes displacing petroleum products. “Agricultural, industrial, commercial, and other organizations decrease their operating expenses by significantly reducing their waste streams and creating clean fuels/heat they can use locally and immediately.” Recent Successes enVerde is finding some successes along the way. The inventor of the technology, Dr. Paul Dauenhauer won a MacArthur Foundation Genius Award.  enVerde was also selected as a member of the next cohort with Creative Destruction Lab. Creative Destruction Lab accelerator program is based out of Calgary, Alberta. In Episode 7 of Business Breakthrough Thursdays, our regular show host Dave Fionda shares his tips on how entrepreneurial CEOs and tech founders can grow and hone their business development skills—even if they're not good at the "hard sell." Business development isn’t about selling, he reminds us. It's about identifying, closing and nurturing the key relationships you need to acquire many customers.Learn:Why founders and owners need to learn or improve business development skillsWhat the three most important sales and business development skills that owner and founders need to focus on areWhy sales and business development aren't the same thing, and what the differences areHow technical founders and owners can become great business developers, even if it's "not who they are"What steps can owners and founders take to develop these skillsAre you a natural-born sales person? If not, don't despair: Dave tells us you can still become a kick-butt business development professional. Business owners have to wear many hats—sales, customer service, marketer, human resource, finance and others. Many times critical business development skills for founders is overlooked. But business development isn’t about selling. Sales is about acquiring one customer. Business development is about identifying, closing and nurturing the key relationships you need to acquire many customers. Selling (closing) is part of that equation, but it's not the only part.So how do business leaders without a sales background learn to build and hone their ability to close the deal? First, don't forget that these are learnable skills, not inherent traits or personality characteristics. The three most important skills that owners and technical founders need to develop, according to Dave, are:Never give up. Persistence is the biggest skill. And this is a skill that technical founders have in spades. Learn how to listen. Business development is 80% listening and 20% speaking. Active listening is a learnable skill. Learn how to build trust. Your prospect doesn't necessarily need to know how you're going to solve their business challenge—they just need to be confident that you're the person who can best solve it.Sales skills, Dave argues, will get you one sale. Business development skills will get you many sales. He gives a specific example from his own experience—how he was able to turn on his business development skills to get a deal made that launched a successful overseas business where 14 previous attempts had failed. Dave is a 35-year sales and business development veteran, a CPA, author, mentor and, most importantly, a technical founder himself. Dave’s entire career has been focused on helping companies grow and be more successful. He loves helping companies succeed. Dave founded and grew 5 ventures in his career and sold three of them successfully. He is a mentor for the Mass Challenge startup competition and has also taught at three of the leading business universities in the US ( Babson, Northeastern and Bentley) and has presented keynotes and executive briefings all over the U.S. and Canada. Dave received his BS in Accounting from Bentley University and an MS in Technology Commercialization from Northeastern University.

Eric Smith has over ten years of experience in Technology Commercialization and a passion for entrepreneurship. Eric came to the University of Arizona Center for Innovation after serving as the Commercialization Network Manager for Tech Launch Arizona (TLA), the University of Arizona's office responsible for moving UA research and technological innovation into the marketplace.  While Eric was at TLA, he focused on building and leveraging a network of domain experts and business leaders who consult on university technologies to help reveal their commercial relevance. He also managed the National Science Foundation Innovation Corps grant program, or NSF-I-Corps, which teaches inventing teams about Lean Startup methodology and customer discovery.  An entrepreneur in his own right, Eric started, developed, and sold his first company to embark on a career in various technology startups. He holds a BS, BA in Business Management, B.S. in Entrepreneurship, and an MBA from the University of Arizona. In this episode… First-time founders are always eager to pitch even before figuring out who their customers are and what they want. According to Eric Smith, Executive Director at the UA Center for Innovation, these founders often have one thing in common: they fail to carry out useful customer discovery. The result is an ask that does not inspire confidence in the customer or a potential investor.  How, then, do you carry out useful customer discovery? Eric says ultimately, you need to have a clear understanding of what exactly you're asking for and why you're asking for it. Armed with that information, you should ask your prospects questions that’ll help you discover their pain points and identify who's giving you the money.   Learn more about making confident asks in this episode of the What's Your Ask show with Stephanie Sims as she hosts Eric Smith, Executive Director of the UA Center for Innovation. Stephanie and Eric discuss what to do before you ask, how to conduct better customer discovery, common mistakes made when preparing a pitch, and more.

Ira Pastor, ideaXme life sciences ambassador, interviews Dr. Todd Haim, Chief of the Office of Small Business Research at National Institute on Aging. Ira Pastor Comments: On several recent shows we’ve been discussing some of the novel, alternative funding pools that have been emerging in and around the biotechnology space, specifically related to some un-met medical needs that we have been focusing on in relation to the show, particularly on the age-tech and longevity biotech fronts. We have had guests join us from the $125 Million Healthy Ageing Challenge program of UKRI (UK Research and Innovation) and the $30 Million Healthy Longevity Global Grand Challenge of the U.S. National Academy of Medicine. We’ve also talked to folks at the XPrize Foundation specifically related to their upcoming inducement prize contest for therapeutics for the diseases of aging. Small Business Innovation: Today we are going to head into the federal innovation research and development arena and into some of the novel public / private sector partnership opportunities that exist between small businesses and / or nonprofit research institutions, and the U.S. government. The Small Business Innovation Research (or SBIR) program, is a United States government program, coordinated by the Small Business Administration (SBA), intended to help certain small businesses conduct research and development, where funding takes the form of contracts or grants, and recipient projects must have the potential for commercialization and must meet specific U.S. government R&D needs. The Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Program, is a parallel program to the SBIR program, but differs from SBIR in that places a greater emphasis on the potential for commercial success, and it requires that universities, federal laboratories, or nonprofit research centers, team with businesses to get products into the marketplace. Approximately $2.5 billion is awarded through these programs each year. Dr. Todd Haim I’m honored to be joined by Dr. Todd Haim, who is Chief of the Office of Small Business Research at National Institute on Aging (NIA), which is a division of the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH), which leads a broad scientific effort to understand the nature of aging and to extend the healthy, active years of life. Dr. Haim oversees the development and evolution of this office with the goal of improving both the quantity and quality of the SBIR/STTR applications. Prior to this role, Dr. Haim was Program Director at the National Cancer Institute’s (NCI) SBIR Development Center, where he evaluated and managed SBIR & STTR grants and contracts focused on the development of novel cancer therapeutics, preventative agents, and drug discovery technologies. Prior to starting in the SBIR Development Center, he was a Research Associate and Christine Mirzayan Science and Technology Policy Fellow at the National Academy of Sciences. Previously, he completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Pfizer in which he actively led Pfizer’s research efforts in a collaboration with Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis that illustrated a mechanism for altered cardiac contractility due to excess fatty acids. Dr. Haim graduated from Albert Einstein College of Medicine with a PhD in Biomedical Research, specialising in Physiology and Cellular Biophysics, and obtained a certificate in Technology Commercialization from John Hopkins’ Carey Business School. He has received several prestigious awards and honors including the 2014 NCI Leadership Development Award, a 2014 and 2017 NIH Director’s Award and the NJ Governor’s Award for Volunteerism in the Field of Health. On this show we will hear about: Dr. Haim's background, how he developed an interest in biomedical sciences, physiology and cellular biophysics, and aging. A general overview of the NIA and it's functions within the U.S. National Institutes of Health. An overview of the NIA SBIR /STTR system. Technological areas of specific interest to the NIA program and to Dr. Haim himself. Credits: Ira Pastor interview video, text, and audio. How have our relationships been impacted by emerging technology? Is technology respecting our human dignity? Should it creep us out that our devices may understand our emotional state? In this episode of thinkPod, we are joined by Justin Hendrix (Executive Director of NYC Media Lab) and Dr. Jess Carbino (Relationship expert & former sociologist for Tinder & Bumble). We talk to Justin and Jess about whether we are being upgraded or downgraded, the interplay between privacy and control, the rise of synthetic media, and whether we should put our trust in institutions or corporations. We also debate using a chatbot therapist, need for soft skills in tech, and how technology is altering the ways in which we interact with one another. “Eli Pariser has this idea of human dignity and whether the devices and the content and the mechanisms and the ecosystem we built is sort of respecting our dignity. I'm not certain at the moment that the information ecosystem is doing that. We've got sort of a ways to go I think until we can feel comfortable that we've addressed those issues.” -Justin Hendrix “People not only want to present themselves as the self that they want to be to the world, but also how they perceive other people want them to be. And I think that's a really strong tension that people have and are trying to negotiate.” -Dr. Jess Carbino “How do we design systems that we can trust, that support institutions we can trust, that support relationships we can trust? I don't think we've solved that.” -Justin Hendrix “Fundamentally the decision to trust is related to the decision that I have control over my fate over my destiny.” -Dr. Jess Carbino Connect with thinkLeaders and our panelists: @IBMthinkLeaders @justinhendrix @drjesscarbino Justin Hendrix is Executive Director of NYC Media Lab, a public-private partnership between the City’s industry and its universities to drive emerging media and technology innovation and entrepreneurship, and the founding Executive Director of RLab, a new 16,500 square foot facility including co-working labs, classrooms, studios, and more in the Brooklyn Navy Yard that is New York’s City’s home for VR, AR and spatial computing. A Cure For The Headaches Of A Long Office Commute It’s been said that some of the greatest entrepreneurs create products and found companies as a way to “scratch their own itch.” That seems to be a theme that is interwoven throughout Darren Westenhaver’s entrepreneurial journey. Darren grew up in the Pacific Northwest, working alongside his father and brother in the family lumber business. A business he turned down the opportunity to run, after college, instead opting to map the family DNA and start Your Vision Video. For nearly a decade, Westenhaver and his company helped other businesses “tell their story through video and multi-media.” Along the way, working with the likes of Intel, Nike and Hewlett Packard. A move to Salt Lake City — to help with the 2002 Winter Olympics — brought about new challenges and opportunities. A self-proclaimed “Apple nerd,” Darren quickly realized that there was nowhere suitable to buy or have his Apple products serviced. So, what's an entrepreneur to do? Well, he negotiated an exclusive license with Apple and built Simply Mac, a “premier partner store” that now has over 50 locations nationwide. But this is where the story takes a wild turn. A turn that caused Westenhaver to sell the rapidly growing business, not long after successfully launching a second location. A series of events that landed his family in Austin Texas. And within five years, found him sitting in a seat at the McCombs School of Business, pursuing a Masters of Science and Technology Commercialization. It was during his time in grad school, though, that the seeds of Darren’s current business began to sprout. Tired of the debilitating daily commute into downtown Austin, he founded Hamlet Coworking, a network of shared and private office spaces for startups, remote workers and growing teams. But more importantly, providing a convenient solution for people who want to work closer to where they live. In this episode of Voices of Impact, Darren and I discuss the origins of the coworking movement. We talk about community, product validation and the opportunities that stem from filling obvious gaps in the marketplace. Darren shares his experience building & selling multiple businesses and the valuable lessons he learned along the way. Interview Post & Transcript: http://www.voicesofimpact.com/darren-westenhaver

How does obtaining intellectual property rights impact technology commercialization strategy?

Technology, R&D management

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 22, 2012

The importance of obtaining intellectual property (IP) rights for commercializing innovation is well established. Separate streams of literature have shown a positive relationship between IP rights and both product licensing and third‐party (especially VC) financing. However, since raising third‐party finance enables an innovating firm to continue commercializing its innovation alone, product licensing and raising third-party finance may be considered substitutes and the impact of obtaining IP rights on commercialization mode is unclear. This paper attempts to reconcile these two competing effects of obtaining IP rights. The paper empirically examines the relationship between the status of the primary patent covering an innovation and whether the innovating firm’s licenses its innovation or raises external finance. The results show that patent filing significantly increases the likelihood of raising finance, while patent allowance has a positive effect on licensing. These results suggest that patent filings may act signals to financial investors but when it comes to licensing IP rights matter most as appropriability mechanisms.

Profiting from technological capabilities: Technology commercialization strategy in a dynamic context

This paper analyzes the technology commercialization strategy of an innovating firm when the incumbent firms possess specialized commercialization capabilities. According to the predominant framework, if the innovation is protected by a strong appropriabilty regime the optimal strategy is to license the innovation to an incumbent product firm. This paper argues by contrast that if the innovating firm has the ability to learn from its commercialization experience, its optimal strategy may be to commercialize alone or to pursue a hybrid arrangement (called co-promotion) whereby it licenses the innovation but retains the rights to participate in the commercialization process. The paper develops a game-theoretic model of the technology commercialization process and derives the conditions under which these different strategies are equilibrium outcomes. It then uses these to explain the pattern of arrangements pursued by biotech firms attempting to commercialize products in the pharmaceutical industry between 1978 and 2008. The results show that a firm is significantly more likely to use the hybrid strategy when there is a higher probability of commercializing a subsequent product in the same product field in future, when there are more firms competing to license the innovation, and when it is in a stronger financial position.
