Urgent action is warranted TODAY, if you happen to be one of the over half of adult Texans who rent their home from a landlord or property owner: HB-32, promoted by the Texas Apartment Association, introduced by D/FW Republican Angie Chen Button, and curiously supported by El Paso Democrat Joe Moody, would greatly speed up the process by which your landlord might evict you from your home - and mostly without due process. This bill is being heard at the House TODAY - your action in contacting your Representative in the House is needed NOW.Thanks to Mark Melton and Stuart Campbell with the Dallas Eviction Advocacy Center for their work in opposing this bill, which is clearly bad for the millions of Texans who rent. Learn more about them at https://www.dallaseac.org/.Thanks for listening! Learn more about Progress Texas and pitch in to support our ongoing work at https://progresstexas.org/.

Both are Solicitor Advocates - John a criminal defence practitioner and Mike a civil litigation practitioner and social justice campaigner. In our 15th episode in Season 2, we speak with Stuart Campbell of the popular political website, Wings over Scotland. In October 2020, Wings highlighted that according to the SNP's 2019 accounts it only had £97,000 in its bank account and total net assets of £272,000. His news article "You've Been Robbed" invited donors who were "concerned about this state of affairs" to ask the SNP what has happened to their donations. The rest, as they say, is history. We discuss the UK General Election and all things UK and Scottish politics.

Stuart Campbell is the Information Technology Manager at Ruapehu District Council, New Zealand. Stuart, who pioneered the use of drone technology at the council, designs and leads the council's project to use drone technology to create 3D maps of cemeteries He is also a highly prolific writer in the past few years, all while working his full time job at the Ruapehu District Council. He also trains others in martial arts, a passion Stuart has held for decades and which inspires his writing. In this on-site interview at the Raffles Town Club in Singapore, Stuart gives some highlights of his presentation in Singapore at AIBotics on “Drones Surveying – From Cemeteries to Modern Buildings.” He explains how the Ruapehu District Council in New Zealand is mapping out its cemeteries using high-definition cameras on a drone. Flying the drone on a lower attitude also produces better resolution images than the legacy solution which relies on cameras at 15,000 feet.  Stuart also shares some tips and lessons, and behind the scenes challenges, giving an example of how a simple occurrence of reflection could affect the image taken by the drone camera. While drones are fun, he advises that before jumping into implementing the technology to carefully consider the regulations such as weight and situational restrictions. He also notes other considerations for drone operators, including the types of drones, the times of day or even the climate and battery power consumption. From a drone security and safety perspective, while Stuart shares that he has never been hacked, he confesses to having crashed a few drones. Recorded by Jane Lo, Singapore Correspondent on-site at the Raffles Town Club in Singapore, 23rd August 2022.

Does a bee's gut influence its sociability? Can a plant deter pests and attract pollinators at the same time? And with bee populations under threat, can artificial intelligence keep colonies safe? The EU estimates pollinators such as honeybees contribute at least EUR 22 billion each year to the European agricultural industry. They are so important that the United Nations has designated the 20th of May as World Bee Day, so this episode of CORDIScovery looks at bees! Hallel Schreier focuses on the intersection between software, artificial intelligence, hardware and biology. His company BeeWise has created the world's first robotic beehive! It’s the eve of Vaccination Day, the first day of the end of the pandemic (we hope), and the Scottish Government top team appeared at today’s Covid press briefing. The First Minister, the Health Secretary and the Chief Medical Officer radiated a Xmas Eve spirit of expectation. The press wanted early details of any changes to the tiers of Covid restrictions and got none plus more on the roll-out of the vaccination programme, which they got. Our papers review include Stephen Paton in the National, James Foley in the Source, Stuart Campbell in Wings and Ruth Wishart in the National.

New BBC Politics Show - Coronavirus Update The new BBC SNPBaad show launched with a glitch. Watching on BBC Scotland, the only place to see the entire briefing, we missed the awkward contribution from DRoss, broadcast only on BBC 1 Scotland, who clearly hadn’t seen or heard the FM live. After checking the recording it was pity time for Douglas. Now that the briefing is inside a politics show there is nothing to stop the FM ‘being political’. Thanks BBC. The important Covid briefing alerted us to new restrictions/measures to be announced within 48 hours by the FM. We cover Stuart Campbell’s accusation of Dani Garavelli lying in her Sunday article as she claimed Alex Salmond had tried to stop vital documents being revealed. Ruth Wishart tells the young to back Indy to secure the freedoms her/our generation enjoyed. Dr Elliot Bulmer suggests a constitutional solution to the independence referendum impasse.

This week we keep the interviews going North of the Border in Scotland with not one, but two, dentists as The Two Reds interview Dr Michael Tang and Dr Stuart Campbell.   Stuart and Michael started their own podcast at the start of 2020 - One in the Chair and Two Waiting - and although it's new, the podcast has already built up an excellent following and reputation.   Both Stuart and Michael share how they are getting through Covid-19. We discuss the steps they are taking to maintain their relationships with their patients, the things they are doing to stay positive and keep their teams positive, and how they are both marketing for new patients.    They also both give a very positive spin on what life will be like after Covid-19 and the opportunities that are out there for forward thinking Dentists and Practices. They share the importance of expanding your comfort zones and the opportunities which arise when you do.    Quite simply this is a brilliant interview with two great characters, with so many gems to take away.

Interestingly, there were many people that I disliked in the military that I eventually came to appreciate after deployment. I often wonder what was the mechanism that allowed that to happen? I reached out to Stuart Campbell for this episode, and he describes his own cultural clash.

Welcome to Outrage, Outrage, Outrage! A 5-part documentary podcast that looks into controversies in different aspects of our media.    In the inaugural episode of the podcast we take a look at a little game that told us war has never been so much fun... and ruffled a few feathers along the way. CANNON FODDER.   So listen in as your podcasting host chats to game producer Jon Hare and magazine editor Stuart Campbell, who tell us about the furor surrounding the game and its marketing.   The game itself is a simple shooter, tasking you with controlling a small platoon across a map in order to wipe out the enemy. It’s retro gaming heaven.   But it was this promotional image which caused upset when the game was released for the Commodore Amiga in 1993. The British Legion took umbrage with the use of the poppy, and tabloid The Daily Star spotted a juicy story, and poor old Jon came under fire.   But if that wasn’t enough, The Star went after Amiga Power, too, due to their having the poppy (the Cannon Fodder version anyway) on the cover of the December 1993 issue.   This is not the original cover, but rather the hastily altered version that publishers cobbled together to dodge the ire of the British Legion.   And before we even get to all that, we take a little stroll through the annals of controversial video games past, such as Mortal Combat and Night Trap. These two games so worried people at the time of their release that congress took up the issue, ultimately resulting in the establishment of the video games ratings system.   The guests    Jon Hare is a legendary computer game producer, known for his time with Sensible Software, and particularly flagship games like Sensible Soccer and Cannon Fodder - now retro gaming classics - among many more. These days Jon is still making killer games, and you can find the Sensible Soccer revival, Sociable Soccer, here… and here…   Stuart Campbell is a games designer and former journalist, who was the editor of Amiga Power at the time of Cannon Fodder’s release. He then went on to join Jon is Sensible Software, working on Cannon Fodder 2 among other titles.   Stuart now writes on his political blog Wings over Scotland https://wingsoverscotland.com/ And on video games, media, politics, snacks and other things here http://wosland.podgamer.com/             OUTRAGE! OUTRAGE! OUTRAGE!   In the beginning there was an explosion, that filled an impossible void. And then there were planets that defined something from the nothingness. Then came life… first minute, then large and cumbersome, and then… man. And man had to learn to survive, to make fire, to find meaning in life. And once all that was sorted out, man learned to get annoyed about stuff. So this is a podcast about some controversies… not the big stuff… not war or politics or corporate fraud or any of that… controversies you may not have even know happened, or how weird they were. So join Andy Smith on a five-part miniseries delving into four little controversies in four different aspects of our media.

The Comics Alternative

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 18, 2016 93:50

For April, Sean and Derek look at three very different webcomics, each a standout in its own way. They begin with Der-shing Helmer's The Meek, the fantastical story of Angora, a young innocent -- even feral -- girl sent on a quest that could save her world. But Angora's isn't the only narrative thread making up this webcomic. We're also introduce to Luca deSadar and his family, rulers of the Northern Territories, and to Soli Areni, a mercenary with a secret to hide and whose jobs aren't always on the lawful side. In the first five chapters of this webcomic, Helmer subtly weaves these storylines together in a way that should become more pronounced as the narrative develops. Next, the guys check out O Human Star, a science fiction tale that's more about relationships and the way we choose to identify ourselves. Blue Delliquanti, its creator, deftly teases out her cast so that they're fully developed individuals whose lives, and dilemmas, become the scaffolding upon which everything rests. The world of O Human Star is a futuristic one, where robotics and artificial intelligence integrate almost seamlessly into human exchanges. And the boundaries between identities is not only limited to that between human and robot. Finally, Derek and Sean consider Stuart Campbell's These Memories Won't Last, a webcomic unlike anything else they've ever discussed. With the help of Lhasa Mencur (on sound design) and programmer Vitaliy Shirokiy, Campbell tells the story of his grandfather as he develops dementia. Whereas both The Meek and O Human Star contained layers of meaning, The Memories Won't Last is primarily defined by its visual layering. As the guys point out, Campbell and company layer the narration of the experience on top of the grandfather's actual story, and then these are overlaid with a ill-defined cloud that can obscure the visuals, much as the grandfather's growing dementia eats away at his memories. This is a short and poignant webcomic, and one that is nominated for a 2016 Webby Award in the NetArt category. And it's something you have to experience yourself to get the full effect.
