In 1933 Billie Holiday made her first recordings, with Benny Goodman. Two years later, a series of recordings with Teddy Wilson and members of Count Basie’s band brought her wider recognition and launched her career as the leading jazz singer of her time. She toured with Basie and with Artie Shaw in 1937 and 1938 and in the latter year opened at the plush Café Society in New York City. In the early 40s she began to perform exclusively in cabarets and in concert. Her recordings between 1936 and 1942 marked her peak years. During that period she was often associated with saxophonist Lester Young, who gave her the nickname “Lady Day.” Enjoy. ---- Join the conversation on Facebook at ---- https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100008232395712 ---- or by email at: dannymemorylane@gmail.com ---- You’ll hear: 1) They Can't Take That Away From Me 2) Ain't Nobody's Business If I Do 3) A Foggy Day 4) You Go To My Head 5) What Is This Thing Called Love 6) Stars Fell On Alabama 7) Speak Low (When You Speak, Love) 8) As Time Goes By 9) Some Other Spring 10) Easy To Love 11) I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm 12) I Can't Believe That You're In Love With Me 13) Everything I Have Is Yours 14) Embraceable You 15) Come Rain Or Come Shine 16) April In Paris 17) The Saint Louis Blues

I hear a lot of my students exclaim that "They Can't" I often respond that it's not that they can't; but rather, they do not like the results of their effort. Today's quote by Chuck Jones lays out the real way to address the concept of I Can't and he states:  “Every artist has thousands of bad drawings in them and the only way to get rid of them is to draw them out.” Let's discuss the approach to "I know I can't" and find a way to turn that into "I know I can, I know I can". Louis Avallone says it is a miracle! Donald Trump finally gave the Democrats reason to embrace fencing! Stephen Parr, however, points out that the Democrat fencing is in the wrong place. Trump wanted to protect Americans from really evil people trying to come in from the south for very illegal purposes. The Democrats want to be surrounded by fencing inside the Capitol to protect themselves from the American people. “If representative government is representing The People, it never has any reason to fear The People.”More Cancel Culture! And they do have a lot to say about it, too!Following certain points in history, American lives have changed. Stephen Parr explains how some things are likely to change post-COVID. How we work at our jobs will be different than it was. More people living in blue states will continue to move out and settle in red states, and he cites a NYT article, “They Can’t Leave the Bay Area Fast Enough”, to support this idea. But are the new residents going to continue their voting habits of electing people who institute proven failed governmental policies from where they just left?Too many of our problems coming from the Environmental Protection Agency have been because they are not following true science where the reporting scientists are required to “show their work”. That no longer can be the case because of a very important, permanent rule change at the EPA. Two Inspiring Stories: Texas Governor Abbott is most offended that the incoming Biden questioned the loyalty of the members of the Texas Guard, and then the show closes with a very inspirational, feel good story from professional sports.

I moved to Octopus recently and had been putting it off for ages,  but I kicked myself for not doing it sooner, as it’s literally a 5 minute job to give them your details.   Click here: https://share.octopus.energy/free-puma-452   On today’s podcast: GMC’s Hummer EV Being Engineered As A Dedicated Electric Vehicle Volvo Battery Electric Trucks For U.S. UK Goes Green Numberplates Why XPeng Stock Skyrocketed Groupe PSA To Launch More EV Vans Lunaz to begin production of electric classic Range Rovers More PHEV's from Volvo and Audi HEVO Wireless Charging     Show #944   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 8th December. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   GMC HUMMER DEVELOPED IN IT'S OWN BUBBLE The pandemic may have introduced us the concept of only mixing with people in your own bubble - or is that just a UK thing? - but now GM and the GMC Hummer are chanelling that spirit. They've confirmed the Hummer EV is being developed without regard for what else is on the market.   But is that a smart idea? Should GM benchmark the Hummer against it's rivals. Or should they make the truck they want to make, and not be swayed by what it will be competing with?   If there's one thing the EV community loves it's benchmarking. EV drag races on Youtube went from viral sensation to cliche when it seemed the only thing reviewers wanted to do was drag race anything and everything against a Tesla.   Hummer EV Vehicle Performance Engineer Todd Hubbard in an interview with Muscle Cars & Trucks:     The platform is called BT1 and it's besppoke to Hummer so the engineers don't have to make this work on a platform which wasn't designed for an EV. Truck fans might recognise the T1 platform from the Chevrolet Silverado but the Hummer is unique. But remember it's only unique because it's first.   GM's roster allows for economies of scale, purchasing, parts sharing and technology crossover. However I've often said the way to make a great EV is with a blank sheet of paper and not making it a compromise car. See: BMW. Or Ford F150, same truck just with batteries.   GM will use the BT1 platform (and their commercial version of it, the BV1) and expand from that, making those savings whilst increasing choice of models. If they didn't it would be a financial disaster but we know that's not the case. We know from the presentations around their Ultium batteries, the plan IS a lot of parts sharing and flexibility of pack sizes. Even motors and drive units will be used from their SUVs, Crossovers and large trucks. Those vehicles, like an electric Silverado, are where they'll really hit economies of scale.   GM also have a platform called BEV3 which is for things like the Cadillac Lyriq in 2021 but that's a different podcast.   VOLVO BATTERY ELECTRIC TRUCKS FOR U.S. Whilst the Tesla Semi Truck sucks up all the attention in teh commercial space there's actualyl lots more going on that people realise. Volvo Trucks North America just introduced the fully electric Class 8 Volvo VNR model and production starts early next year. They will be made in Virginia on the same lines as the diesel models. Except rather than an oil burner they have a 264kWh battery, a top speed of 65mph and a range of 240km. The trucks go up to 82,000 lbs gross weight. Volvo has been testing these as part of a trial in California and say that they provide customers with a complete solution. So I'm guessing that's charging and fleet management.   UK GOES GREEN NUMBERPLATES From today it's legal to have a new green numberplate here in the UK. Of course they are a legal identifier so had to go through the legislation process. From Dec 8th you can order your plates with a green rectangle on the left there the old blue Euro flag would be. At the moment it's just for those who want to show off their green credentials because the benefits aren't yet defined. Government hopes local areas will introduce incentives like free parking and bus lane use. Whilst ANPR can do a lot of the work, there are still traffic wardens who give tickets to EVs when parked in a special space because they don't know what cars are electric and which ones aren't. They CAN be retro fitted. No you can't make these yourself with green tape. By law, each number plate must display the name and postcode of the supplying outlet, the British Standard number and the trade mark of the manufacturer or component supplier.   WHY XPENG STOCK SKYROCKETED Chinese Electric car maker had a stellar November with the stock price up 203.2% and 100 of their G£ Crossovers are now being shipped to Europe for the first time. They delivered 3040 vehicles in Ocotber and 4224 in November. A total of 21,341 this year. They unveiled their new autonomous driving software at the Auto expo in China on Nov 20th. A reminder XPeng are the Tesla close in a legal battle with them aas well, over a former employee  who joined XPeng to work on self-driving. Tesla are saying, and this isn't legal speak, prove you didn't steal our code. XPeng saying, prove that we did. It's a common misconception Tesla open-sourced their patents so others were free to copy, in the sense of true open-source code. But instead they promised not to take action against anyone using them, in order further the field of EVs - but they do reserve the right to stop people using their IP.   GROUPE PSA TO LAUNCH MORE EV VANS Following the 2020 launch of electric versions of their medium van models (D-Van) and large van (E-Van), the four brands, Peugeot, Citroën, Opel and Vauxhall will complete their line-ups in 2021 with all-electric versions of their compact van (B-Van) and associated passenger cars. Coming from eCMP platform, the powertain is composed with:   A water-cooled 50kWh electric battery allowing power outputs of up to 100kW, A 100kW/136hp electric motor, An onboard charger available in two levels of power (7.4kW single-phase and 11kW three-phase)   LUNAZ TO BEGIN PRODUCTION OF ELECTRIC CLASSIC RANGE ROVERS Fancy an electric Range Rover conversion? The Silvertone based company Lunaz will make 50 of the classic Rangies, from 1974 to 1994, in all electric off roaders. Prices start at £245,000 or $329,000. It's a bare metal restoration and reengineering. 4 wheels drive, new suspection and brakes, infotainment screens etc. Customer delivieres summer 2021.   MORE PHEV'S FROM VOLVO AND AUDI Volvo completes electrification of XC60 range with plug in petrol. The XC60 is available with three plug-in hybrid powertrains. These combine a supercharged and turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine that drives the front wheels and an electric motor that powers the rears, ensuring the plug-in hybrid’s exceptional efficiency is twinned with the reassurance of all-wheel drive. And an 11.6kWh battery.   Presales of the A3 Sportback 45 TFSI e will start in Germany this week. In this episode, we sit down with Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Wesley Lowery. Wesley is an Ohio native and talks to us about joining the trade of journalism in the 8th grade and the heroes that inspired him to blaze his trail in an evolving field with little representation. He was a lead on the Washington Post's "Fatal Force" project that won the Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting in 2016 as well as the author of They Can't Kill Us All: Ferguson, Baltimore, and a New Era in America's Racial Justice Movement.Wesley's work focuses on issues of policing, justice, and race relations, and can be found in the Washington Post, Boston Globe, CBS News, The Atlantic, the cover of Newsweek, and now on 60 Minutes. His groundbreaking work on the frontlines of Ferguson to George Floyd gives him a unique perspective regarding the narratives told around police brutality. When asked, “Where do we go from here?” he speaks earnestly about the power we have as individuals and as a collective and how he believes that there is no better time like the present for us to rise. We talk to Hanif about writing, music and influences. And we move into a discussion of his own politics, and he touches on his own experiences with homelessness, eviction, and brief incarceration. We also talk about the movements he’s plugged into in Columbus, Ohio and how cultural workers can show up and support existing work. We end with a discussion of 68to05.com and some of his forthcoming projects. (photo by Marcus Jackson)

'Mutual aid, solidarity and commoning become most visible during periods of deep crisis. This is when the structures of the state and of capitalist markets not only fail to address the emergency situation, but they often show their complicity in making it worse. When solidarity is revealed to the majority as the practice that makes a difference, it is as if society en masse were to whisper in our ear its desire to evolve: "I want to evolve, I want to evolve, but my evolution depends on you," says society. And again: "Make this relational care embedded in solidarity the new gravitational point around which a new world is built."' - Massimo de Angelis This month we are joined by three contributors to the new book, Pandemic Solidarity, about which the above words were written. The book brings together a collection of stories from around the world, revealing what an alternative society could look like, post-pandemic, and what skills and relationships we need in order to create that society. Discussing the book, and with particular reference to experiences in Portugal and Brazil, are:  Lais Duarte, a Ph.D candidate at the Anthropology department of CUNY, who studies solidarity networks, immigrant integration policy and decolonisation praxis. Lais also co-authored the chapter on Portugal in the book; Marina Sitrin, Assistant Professor of Sociology at SUNY Binghamton, New York. Co-editor of Pandemic Solidarity and author or co-author of several books including Horizontalism, Everyday Revolutions and They Can’t Represent Us!; and Vanessa Zettler, a teacher, sociologist, translator and writer living in São Paulo, where she is also an activist building community through music. Vanessa authored the book’s chapter on Brazil.  --- Podcast listeners can buy Pandemic Solidarity with 50% off, via plutobooks.com/podcastreading. Use the coupon 'PODCAST' at the checkout. Sally's Robotizaton at the end of Sonic #230, and from a story perspective how it could've been avoided 3. Why IDW Comics (as freelance as They Can be) seem more willing to ship the MANE 7/8 over the creative staff of the animated series of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic 4. Could we end up seeing more adult or all-ages animated series like "The Midnight Gospel" (which is on Netflix) debut in the coming years? 5. And finally, with all these animated series reboots/retcons debuting over the past couple of years and with more on tap for the upcoming future. What other classic animated series could we see getting that same treatment. First there was a Tweet.. now there's a "fleet"?A fleet is a tweet that's available for a fleeting moment, well 24 hours. Twitter wants people to tweet the things that might usually be sent to draft. The things on the tip of their tongue, or the things that pop into your head. People are more cautious now with what they Tweet because they know it's headed to their archive. Fleets can't be retweeted, they don't have likes and people can only reply to the sender via a Direct Message. They CAN though be screenshot-ed and shared so people should still be careful with what they post.Fleets are not a sure thing though - they're being tested in Brazil now and it's TBD on when they'll roll out globally. The International Space Station is getting visitorsThis is the stuff of dreams! Three tourists will get to visit the ISS next year on a SpaceX rocket. The whole trip is 10 days - 2 days of travel with at least eight days with astronauts sharing their space. Tickets don't come cheap though - they'll be around $55 million. One is already booked, there are two to go.There's a Coronavirus website that's going viral online..isitcancelledyet.com has one purpose, it tells you what has been cancelled. The Olympics? Still on. The Coachella music festival? Not cancelled. There are a few fun ones thrown in there too.LISTEN TO AUDIO ABOVE
