Where do games come from? Most are direct descendants of other games. We're joined by designer Heather Dixon (Apistocracy) to discuss the games that motivated us to do some design work of our own, from house rules to interface tweaks to brand new bouncing baby game designs. Kenan examines the origin story of a popular classic, and Alba helps us break the ice. Then we discuss the games that irked and inspired us in ways we couldn't let go, including Werewolf, Wingspan, un/appealing themes, the ultimate pick-up-and-deliver game, One Night Ultimate What-Have-You, art that inspires fan art, what constitutes game design, Arraial, Tetris, action points vs. counters, Patchwork, retro art, art that looks like art, usability and readability, learning to teach, what constitutes a game designer, Akrotiri, Splendor, layering theme onto games as you play, Splendor vs. Splendor Duel, the unassailability of our early faves, and how to accelerate toward an endgame. Then we hear from our beloved Rabble about the games they house-rule, including Wingspan, Catan, Tidal Blades, Targi, Everdell, Santa Monica, and Scarface 1920. We close with a discussion of implied house rules and why we do or don't edit the the media/art/games we consume. Israel's attack on its neighbors could not be sustained without support from the West. And much of that support comes from the United Kingdom. Only a few hundred kilometers from Gaza, the British military base in Akrotiri, Cyprus, serves as the “heartbeat” of the Israeli assault. Israeli warplanes fly there to be serviced and repaired, while Western supply planes fly into the base before making the final trip to Israel.“Almost no one in this country [the United Kingdom] had heard about it before Gaza and before our work on it,” investigative journalist and returning guest Matt Kennard told Lowkey today, adding:This is a colony that Britain retained after awarding independence to Cyprus in 1960. But it wasn't really independent because Cyprus gave 3% of its land mass to the British, on which they built a massive air base on Akrotiri and a massive intelligence base at Dhekelia. And now, they are being used to facilitate a genocide in Gaza, through [supplying] arms, personnel and intelligence.”Kennard is a writer and journalist for Declassified UK. He has broken several stories about secret British collaboration and support for Israeli actions. Previously, he worked as a reporter for The Financial Times and was a fellow and a director of the Center For Investigative Journalism in London. His latest book is “Silent Coup: How Corporations Overthrew Democracy.”For Kennard, Britain's active support of Israeli actions makes them participants in the ongoing genocide. Last October, the British government issued a “D Notice” instructing media outlets not to report on any elite U.K. SAS commando operations in Gaza. This action immediately raises the question, “What are British special forces doing in Gaza?”In addition to weapons sales, logistical aid and political support, Britain also secretly trains Israeli troops. Despite this, the Israeli government has continued to attempt to infiltrate and surveil top-level British politicians. Boris Johnson, for instance, revealed that Benjamin Netanyahu personally attempted to place a listening device in his quarters. Kennard's investigation revealed that one-third of Johnson's cabinet had their political careers funded either directly by Israel or by the pro-Israel lobby.Support the showThe MintPress podcast, “The Watchdog,” hosted by British-Iraqi hip hop artist Lowkey, closely examines organizations about which it is in the public interest to know – including intelligence, lobby and special interest groups influencing policies that infringe on free speech and target dissent. The Watchdog goes against the grain by casting a light on stories largely ignored by the mainstream, corporate media.Lowkey is a British-Iraqi hip-hop artist, academic and political campaigner. As a musician, he has collaborated with the Arctic Monkeys, Wretch 32, Immortal Technique and Akala. He is a patron of Stop The War Coalition, Palestine Solidarity Campaign, the Racial Justice Network and The Peace and Justice Project, founded by Jeremy Corbyn. He has spoken and performed on platforms from the Oxford Union to the Royal Albert Hall and Glastonbury. Akrotiri, a town on the Greek island of Thera, (what we call now Santorini) was buried and forgotten till the 20th century. This unfortunate event for the Minoans, was great luck for us, as archaeologists unearthed an almost intact city. Amongst the many discoveries were many frescoes. And on some of them were depicted women picking saffron from crocus flowers! Which for the purposes of our episode today, is perhaps the oldest depiction of saffron picking ever! You see the spice of our discussion today, saffron from the flower crocus sativus it always had a magnetic attraction to humans! With it's vibrant golden colour, saffron was considered important as a medicine, dye and food. And it still is the most expensive spice in world! C.G. Buswell is a former army Combat Medical Technician and Staff Nurse.  Chris has cared for many military heroes and the traumas he witnessed during his nursing and emergency care of them in life and death led him to develop military Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. He writes about this too in his books. This form of mindfulness helps keep his demons at bay by inserting them into your Kindle! Other postings in his career included the Field Surgical team in Belize, Akrotiri in Cyprus, and Haslar Hospital in Gosport. Chris developed a love for writing during his 10-year service career and has had numerous articles published in journals like Professional Nurse, Nursing Standard, and the Nursing Times. He wanted to include his middle initial in his novels after George Main, his Grandfather, who served with the 2nd Battalion Gordon Highlanders during World War Two. His military novels feature historical actions of the Gordons. Buried in Grief is a tale about the loss of a child. Sadly, Chris drew deeply from his own bereavement to bring this emotional rollercoaster of a novel. It helped him explore his own feelings during his mourning, but the ending terrified most readers, thanks to his dark, twisted mind. He urges you not to read it. He has had therapy and now writes gentle romance stories, of a sort!   C.G. Buswell now writes full-time and lives in Boddam, Aberdeenshire with his Bravehound PTSD assistance dog Lyn, fantails white doves, pigeons, and a tortoise - o aye and a wife. Let's go on an adventure to a place variously described as, 'Like being shot to the moon with a glass of fine wine in your hand' and where, 'you basically have the personality of an active volcano in your glass.'Santorini is arguably the ultimate wine destination - a windswept, arid, infertile outcrop of an island in the glittering Aegean Sea. Stunning - but bleak, and where the memory of one of the most violet volcanic eruptions in human history can not only be seen but also tasted in your glass.Wine is one of the few crops to thrive here, albeit at the cost of back-breaking labour and marginal profitability due to tiny yields and regular setbacks. The island's historic sweet vinsantos have most likely been enjoyed for thousands of years - the dry whites made from the majestic, fierce Assyrtiko grape are astonishing symphonies of bracing acidity, steely structure and salty minerality. These are true jewels in the wine world's crown. One producer speculates, with good reason, that Santorini, 'is the oldest vineyard on the planet.' Phylloxera-free, you see... Hence the Jurassic Park reference. For Peter, Santorini Assyrtiko is the ultimate food wine, able to pair with everything from delicate oysters to rich lamb and beyond. No wonder one wine grower describes this place as, 'the Mecca of wine'.But all is not well in wine paradise. Climate change batters the vineyard in the form of heatwaves and hail. Mass tourism threatens not only to overwhelm the island's infrastructure and drain the workforce but, more critically, erase vineyards permanently as land is sold to developers. The result is that Santorini's vineyard has declined by a third between 2005 and 2022. 'Sometimes in Santorini it feels like we're forgotten by God' commented one local wine producer. Now, though, the island's wine community is fighting back. In this first episode of a two-part mini-series in collaboration with Wines of PDO Santorini, we set the scene - taking in the island's intriguing history, exploring the bizarre vineyards, talking to key wine producers, and not shying away from the challenges the island's wine community faces. As for how the wine producers are fighting to ensure wine's survival, we discover plans to declare the entire island's production organic - which would be the first ever entire PDO appellation to do such. There's also a UNESCO application in the pipeline - and plans to raise prices in order to ensure the survival of the vineyard.Don't miss the next and final episode in this mini-series, where we explore Santorini's fierce, remarkable grapes, wine and food - and look to the future, both in terms of challenges but also reasons to be hopeful. All details from this episode (including photos of these unique kouloura basket vines) are on our website: Show notes for Wine Blast S4 E18 - Santorini: Wine's Jurassic Park. Please do keep your comments and questions coming!

Today we discuss bevy of Roll & Writes with Jay Cormier founder of Off The Page Games and designer of games like Akrotiri, In the Hall of the Mountain King, Junk Art and many more! Roll/Flip & Write as a genre are (usually) small and portable games that involve players interacting with some sort of randomizer (e.g. cards, dice, ect.) and marking the results on sheets of paper or erasable boards. Another common factor is that marking choices made in previous plays limit a player's marking choices in future plays. In the episode we talk about all things surrounding Roll & Writes, but we focus specifically on That's So Clever, Patchwork Doodle, Cartographers, Welcome To and Rajas of the Ganges:  The Dice Charmers. About 3,600 years ago, a colossal volcanic eruption blew apart the Greek island Thera, now the popular tourist destination known as Santorini. Falling volcanic rock and dust buried the Bronze Age settlement Akrotiri, on the south side of the island, preserving multi-story buildings, frescoes, tools, furniture and food, until archaeological excavations uncovered them in the last century, much like the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 CE famously buried Pompeii and Herculaneum. But unlike the Roman cities, Akrotiri has a notable lack of bodies. Unlike Vesuvius, Thera’s volcano gave its inhabitants substantial warning. Minor eruptions sent a column of ash 40 kilometers into the sky and rained hot pumice on the island. University of Hawaii volcanologist Krista Evans says evidence of those precursory volcanic burps can be found within the archaeological site and in geological deposits around the island. The empty settlement implies the people left, but traces of their distinctive pottery and arts do not subsequently appear in the archaeological record on Crete or other nearby islands in their trading network. It’s as if they people just disappeared. Evans explains how the people of Akrotiri likely fled south by boat toward Crete, 120 kilometers (75 miles) across the Mediterranean and what eruption models suggest may have been their fate. This episode was produced by Liza Lester and mixed by Kayla Surrey.

Some disasters reverberate throughout history.  Santorini wasn't always a ring of islands...  there was a time it was the beautiful peak of a mountain island called Thera.  The archeological site at Akrotiri is our main portal into what exactly happened to the Minoan civilization on Crete and Thera... but the effects of Thera's eruption were felt thousands of kilometers away, and may have even shaped the course of history.  The Exodus, the parting of the red (reed?) sea, ancient Egyptian plagues, and the lost city of Atlantis.   Leigh's song pick:: Parish of Tama (Ossuary Dub) by Painkillerhttps://open.spotify.com/track/15N3c26rKcFMMaJWFWHwdR   Peter's song pick:: Pompeii by ES Posthumushttps://open.spotify.com/track/0OQqwcp91YgRBpjtyCWdEQ   If you like what you hear, please subscribe and leave a review! Also, tell your friends!Tell your enemies too, we're not picky.   Become a patron, get exclusive content, help us make more disasters!www.patreon.com/thisdisasterpod   Want a cool Disaster Shirt?  Pre-order yours before May 31st!  Patrons, don't forget your discount code...www.thisdisasterpod.com/shop   Instagram/Twitter/Facebook: @thisdisasterpod www.thisdisasterpod.com   Theme song by Blank Sun: https://blanksun.bandcamp.com

The island of Santorini has not only has breathtaking views but also a fascinating history. Traces of its first inhabitants have been linked back to 4500 BC. In 1613 BC the most powerful volcanic event in the last 10,000 years took place – completely destroying all the islands within a 60 km radius. It has been estimated that 90 billion tons of molten rock was injected into the air, the sea swallowed the volcano, and a massive tsunami swept across the Aegean Sea. Along with the obvious devastation of nature, it is believed that the eruption also sealed the deal for the most civilized nation on the island at the time, the Minoans. Thanks to the thick layer of ash cause by the event, the Bronze Age settlement of Akrotiri was so well preserved that we are able to see how prosperous the area had once been with an elaborate drainage systems, multi-storied buildings, incredible wall paintings, furniture and vessels. The site has as much of a significant importance as does Pompeii. The island’s main volcanic rock, its mineral rich soil, and the amazing climate, has produced some incredibly unique wines. Santorini is known for some of the oldest vineyards in the world. And we know that wine is one of my favourite topics. On today’s podcast I speak with Panayiota Kalogeropoulou about Santorini’s wines. Panayiota is the Director at the Domaine Sigalas vineyard. Paris Sigalas, a mathematician with a goal to make his Santorini vineyard a world heritage site, focuses on grapes that thrive in Santorini (these include the Aidani, Athiri, Plantana – and the prime Greek grape Assyrtiko).
