Today's show is our third in the Training Grounds mini-series, following Carnegie Corporation and Bain Capital to better understand how certain organizations have developed industry leaders. Wellington Management is one of the world's largest, privately held asset managers, managing over $1.3 trillion in assets with 875 investment professionals across 19 offices and a nearly 100 year history with an unusually low level of turnover along the way. Wellington has developed, recruited, and retained leading global investment talent across public equities, fixed income, and recently private markets as well. My guest to discuss this training ground is Jean Hynes, CEO of Wellington, who has spent more than thirty years at the firm starting as an administrative assistant. Our conversation covers Wellington's cultural values and boutique investment team model, including apprenticeship for junior talent, recruiting at the mid-level, and promotion all the way to partner. We then discuss Wellington's evolution from a U.S. equity value shop to a global, multi-asset, multi-strategy powerhouse, and Jean's evolution from a portfolio manager to CEO.   Take Capital Allocators Audience Engagement Survey Learn More Follow Ted on Twitter at @tseides or LinkedIn Subscribe to the mailing list Access Transcript with Premium Membership

Darcie recounts her remarkable journey from enlisting in the Army Reserve during high school to becoming a commissioned officer in the Army Nurse Corps. She shares her motivations rooted in patriotism and the desire to fund her college education and reflects on overcoming her initial fears of the medical field to discover a lifelong passion for nursing. A pivotal moment in her career was her 2003 deployment to Afghanistan, where she served at the 452 Combat Support Hospital, profoundly influencing her future career decisions.       This episode also explores Darcie's transformative experiences on humanitarian missions to remote areas in third-world countries. The first episode discussed Carnegie Corporation, where over a dozen years 8 of the 17 investment professionals that came through the doors became CIOs at Carnegie or other institutions. Bain Capital is one of the world's largest private alternative investment firms. The firm was founded 40 years ago with a half dozen team members managing a $37 million growth equity fund and has expanded to 1,750 people, 180 partners, and $200 billion in assets under management today. During that time, Bain Capital developed leaders across every category of alternative investing, many of whom started in the firm's private equity business. My guest to discuss this training ground is John Connaughton the Co-Managing Partner & Global Head of Bain Capital Private Equity. Our conversation covers Bain Capital's founding idea, recruiting and training, governance model, inflection points of growth, compensation, case for staying private, culture, developing leaders, and succession. In this episode, The Future of Education, Amy Edelstein explores a visionary approach to teacher training. If we are to truly inspire teachers and students to engage with their own learning in an innovative and even prophetic way, the training grounds that prepare teachers to teach must exemplify that new world and its higher values. Far too many people are concerned about how AI and Augmented Virtual Reality might subvert learning and far too few are imagining the frontiers that can be created in a virtual reality training ground, where the context is of engaged learning that rests on and fosters our higher human development. From  Socratic dialogue, to libraries of Alexandria, to the Buddha's monastic university at Nalanda, we have rare examples of education that went broad and deep, and fostered amazing breakthroughs in philosophy, ethics, mathematics, science, literature, theater, art, and more. Support the show

Season 18, Episode 15: Brew Session (Omen Hawker + Training Grounds) The dream of Sol Ring is alive and well thanks to March of the Machine's astonishing blue mana dork, Omen Hawker. This little one drop taps for stunning amounts of mana — but only to pay for activated abilities. It's the kind of unique effect that promises so much power, but at the expense of consistency. Outside of oddballs like Zirda, Biomancer's Familiar, Powerstone tokens and Renowned Weaponsmith, specialized mana producers like Omen Hawker were mostly going it alone. Enter Training Grounds. This slick little reprint from March of the Machine: Aftermath suddenly doubles our options for a deck full of activated abilities, and opens up combo loops besides. It's not an exact parallel: not every Omen Hawker deck will be a Training Grounds deck, but every Training Grounds deck can potential benefit from the Omen Hawker. This is a brewing space that has barely been touched in three decades of competitive Magic, so it's all the more exciting to finally see what activated abilities can do. Cavedan and David are brewing up a storm with eight new decklists featuring Omen Hawker, Training Grounds, or both. We've got Pioneer Drafna combo decks, Shark Typhoon control decks, pump knight aggro, Nykthos devotion, and even turbo Urza's Saga. If that sounds far fetched, consider that Omen Hawker has already notched a 12th place Challenge finish in Modern, using Wizardcycling of all things! And the synergies in Pioneer keep getting better and better. Luckily, only a handful are poised to make an impact in non-rotating formats. In today's compressed Set Review, Cavedan and Morde sort the wheat from the chaff and identify the most important Aftermath cards for Modern and Pioneer. They also evaluate the newly revealed Ring Temptation mechanic, and the extended Standard rotation aimed at reviving tabletop play.   Like our content? Support us on Patreon and join our brewing community!
