On the rise and, um...fade out(?) of Chris Sawyer, the genius creator of bestselling, critically-acclaimed simulation games Transport Tycoon and RollerCoaster Tycoon — who made a career out of working at the cutting-edge, in bare metal assembly code that he wrote and optimised (and optimised again) on his own, until the cutting-edge left him behind. Chris was only a design consultant on 2004 game RollerCoaster Tycoon 3, but its remastered "Complete" edition has just come out on Nintendo Switch and the PC version is free on the Epic Games Store right now (until October 2). The original two games are also still sold via the likes of Steam and GOG. Transport Tycoon, meanwhile, lives on in open-source project https://www.openttd.org/ (OpenTTD) and in a mobile port (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.thirtyonex.TransportTycoon&hl=en_US (Android), https://apps.apple.com/us/app/transport-tycoon/id634013256 (iOS)) of the original game by Chris's company 31X.  Thanks as always to my supporters on Patreon — especially my $10+ backers Carey Clanton, Rob Eberhardt, Simon Moss, Vivek Mohan, Wade Tregaskis, and Seth Robinson. Planes, trains, and automobiles! And boats. Oh, and hovercrafts and lorries. And canal boats? Is that right? Apparently it is! What? No automobiles? Are you serious? But we've already said that they're in it. What a joke. Let's try this again: All the transport solutions you could possibly want (except cars), squeezed into an enjoyable management simulation. Start off with just a unicycle and a wicker basket, delivering bread for your local baker, and work your way up to become the sinister, all-pervading transport conglomeration we all wish we could be. That's what this game is!As is tradition, Chris and Ashley amble their way through an hour of conversation that is at once rambling and incisive. Listen in this week for some deep cuts on the dark predilections of The Sims players in the olden days, lots of Rollercoaster Tycoon-based chat, why Chris should have been playing Railroad Tycoon instead of this, and precisely how tall the fence behind Ashley's childhood home was! Exciting, we know, and that's just a vertical slice of all the goodness in this episode! If you want to give Transport Tycoon a bash, head on over to OpenTTD and fill your boots.Apologies for Ashley's grump at the beginning. Next,  Joe Juba, Brian Shea, Ben Reeves, and Alex Stadnik all join me to discuss the results of our competition to predict who will take home the win at The Game Awards that happened last week. Let's just say there is a lot to discuss. And victory here might make you the smartest person in the world. In the next segment, Ben Reeves, Joe Juba, and Dan Tack join me for community emails where we do the unthinkable: We rate the Mona Lisa.  Then we have the sixth and final installment of our Game of the Year chats, where I ask guests what games are defining their year. I am joined by Ben Reeves, Matt Miller, and Dan Tack as we try to get in some last-minute discussions. Check the list below for all the games we covered over the last few weeks. Find those podcasts on your favorite service! And finally, Joe Juba interviews Michel Koch, Jean-Luc Cano, and Raoul Barbet from Dontnod Entertainment. They are some of the minds behind Life is Strange 2, which recently saw its successful conclusion. Joe has a spoiler-filled chat with the team about the process of making the game, so fans who have already finished Life is Strange 2 should definitely tune in.  Thanks for listening! We talk about his very early fascination with how games worked and pulling apart code in QBasic, why the Polystation was a blessing in disguise, questionable tactics in Starsiege: Tribes, why he enjoys giving talks so much, the runway train that is Vlambeer and the mystery of it's logo, "I do what I do for many reasons, and those reasons are life and influence and impact and death and responsibility and legacy and also videogames." Do you hear that sound? Can you feel it? The cool ocean breeze in your hair, the salt on your tongue. It's the smooth crash of the Last Wave on KVGM with your host, Hammock, bringing you thirty minutes of the best video game jams(z) from all your favorite composers and consoles, each and every week from our beachside studio in sunny Aqua City Island. Sit back, relax, and get ready to catch...the Last Wave. We're well past our half-year anniversary and boss rushin' straight for the big ONE. We're clearing scenarios, riding camels, strollin' right on down to the harbor lounge, where all our futbol dreams will likely die in a pint of ale. But let's hope not - let's hope for the best - that maybe one day, all of our futbol dreams will come true. Every single one of them. Or just the one, whichever.
