The impact of investment activity on our industry cannot be overstated, with the velocity of capital pouring into the health sector reaching stratospheric proportions. The valuation of private equity deals in the US health care sector is nearly $100 billion dollars—a twentyfold increase from 2000 (when it was less than $5 billion). Before COVID-19, we were already seeing mass provider consolidation, expansive funding in digital health, and significant M&A activity…and the appetite for capital investment in healthcare has only increased in recent years. The amount of capital being poured into the health sector, and the velocity at which it has been deployed, is reshaping the landscape and a driving force in the future of value-based care. Joining us this week is Don McDaniel, the CEO of Canton & Company. Don engages with pioneering healthcare firms across the industry, all striving to win in the new health economy. A true market-maker, he focuses on advancing innovation, elevating market positions, and connecting complementary players to disrupt and reshape the industry. Don McDaniel is a healthcare visionary, master economist, serial entrepreneur, and lover of a good debate. In this episode, he will provide insight into the continued increase in the appetite of private equity and other institutional investors. He will discuss whether this interest is good or bad for consumers, patients, providers, payers and other stakeholders. He will also overview the interest level and forecast of investment activity, explore pros and cons from various stakeholders' perspectives, and consider the implications of such investment on the value movement. If you are a business leader trying to understand current investment trends and whether or not institutional equity actually improves the overall industry health of healthcare, this episode is for you! "If you live your life in balance sheet you are back to an account telling an entrepreneur telling them how to run their company". #CallumLaing lifts the lid on the broken and corrupt world of #venturecapital and #privateequity.PE/VC had their heyday 20 years ago when they were able to pay much less to buy companies, but their success back then has led to massive inflation. In order to make money today, they have to force their investments to strip out costs, go into massive debt and pursue insatiable growth and the expense of longevity. In this very frank interview we discuss toxic impact of the Silicon Valley boys club. We explore the damaging illusion that VC/PE are the smartest people in the room, the cartel like behaviour PE firms operate to give the illusion of success - in 2019 over 30% of PE sales were to other PE companies. "I need to give my investors their money back with a return so I sell you my company on the promise I will buy 2 of yours next year. That way I can show how clever I am when I pay back my investors today, and you can do the same next year". Well over 70% of companies seduced by the promise of rapid growth and riches, lose everything. Often it's closer to the 95% mark.We lift the lid on the facade of stock options as a way to get rich. Too often it's a honeytrap that leaves those who made the company exitable, nothing, or worse. In the dot.com boom, options saddled paper millionaires with a crippling tax liability and they were forced into bankruptcy. We examine the myth of the great minds in many of the big management consulting and strategy firms and their broken business models.Callum shares his philosophy that is allowing MBH Corporation PLC to achieve hypergrowth in the value of their stock by acquiring profitable, traditional, "boring" businesses like kitchen fitting companies, construction, caravan companies, leaving majority ownership and control in the hands of the business owner.Callum gives a fantastic piece of advice as his best lesson from his years of scar tissue. We discuss the potency of gender and ethnic diversity to add value and perspective and the idiocy of limiting your talent pool. Due Diligence on a private investment is more than legal and financial review, and background checks. Good due diligence to evaluate long term viability of a potential private equity investment involves getting the opinions of experts on the industry, intellectual property, and market opportunity. This is a steep and expensive challenge for private solo investors. Even Angel Investor Networks, Private Equity Funds and Venture Capital Funds struggle with building broad cross-industry expertise. InquireOf has developed a solution for that. InquireOf was built to empower investors to find industry experts for their deals, fast. Unlike traditional expert acquisition methods, InquireOf's software equips investors to quickly vet deals with easy to use proprietary specialized search algorithms to find the expertise needed when it is needed. Karen's guest on the Compassionate Capitalist Podcast, Kyle Sale is the Founder & CEO of InquireOf. Kyle’s broad experience spans turning around technology companies for private equity investors to building globally distributed search products for Fortune 500 firms. Along his journey he realized how critical it was to the due diligence process to have experts to call upon and built InquireOf to sit at the intersection of the emotion of wanting to invest, and the discipline to evaluate the true potential of the investment. Karen Rands wrote the best selling primer for Angel Investors: Inside Secrets to Angel Investing. She emphasizes building a team to help evaluate a deal beyond the investor's own experience. She saw the value of InquireOf in her own efforts to provide due diligence services to her investor network.
What does Private Equity investment, diversity in Applied Behavior Analysis, and Behavior Analysis as applied to sports all have in common? It just so happens that these are the topics I chatted about with Beverly and Kirk Kirby of Team ABA! At last year's ABAI, Rick Kubina introduced me to this dynamic duo, and boy do they have a great story to tell, and I'm frankly quite grateful that they're doing so on The Behavioral Observations Podcast. Along with Rick and Mark Dixon, Beverly was on a panel that I chaired that discussed the role of big money in ABA. Mark discussed the business side of PEAK and Rick talked about the founding and subsequent purchase of Chartlytics by Central Reach. And then Beverly shared the story of how the Kirby's started the Sparks Group, a company that was dedicated to serving the underserved in the DC Metro area. Sparks went on to be acquired by a private equity investor, and Beverly shared the lengthy and challenging process of selecting an investor that would continue to provide high quality ABA services in an ethical manner. Whether you're a business owner or not, this is a great story on its own! The Kirby's went on to found the aforementioned Team ABA (and as an aside, check out and follow their Facebook page here as they post lots of cool stuff!). The services Team ABA provides are quite varied, but a lot of their focus is on using ABA for improving sports performance, addressing wellness, and helping organizations run more effectively. And if you caught the last episode with Rick, he mentioned some of the cool stuff that they're doing in the realm of sports performance. We of course dig into this in more detail in this episode. The Kirby's are also passionate about improving the diversity in our field. They've done quite a bit of outreach to Historically Black Colleges to provide internships and other opportunities for students of color. This is an issue that does not get talked about a lot in our field, and to be candid, this is a long-overdue discussion on this podcast. I’m grateful they were able to share this with me, and by extension, the broader audience of Behavioral Observations. This episode is brought to you by: Behavior University. Behavior University provides university-quality continuing education for everyday practitioners. To learn more about their CE offerings, discounts for podcast listeners, etc... please visit behavioruniversity.com/observations. The University of Cincinnati Online. I'm also excited to promote this upcoming workshop: Have you ever been part of a team composed of capable, accomplished members that underachieved or failed to launch an initiative successfully? Do you work with teams where members burn out, conflict, misbehave, or act in ways that contradict the purpose of the group? Are you currently working with other people toward a common goal and aiming to ensure that every member is empowered for maximum contribution and long-term sustainable engagement? Then consider attending the OBM 2.0 – The PROSOCIAL Teaming Model which will be taught by Drs. Darnell Lattal and Thomas Szabo. This workshop is being put on by my friends at Connections Behavior Planning and Intervention. It’s being held at Green River Community College, Auburn, Washington on January 18th and 19th. Attendees will learn the ProSocial model: evidence-based practices to promote employee engagement, cooperation, high-level performance, and complex organizational problem-solving. The ProSocial approach incorporates findings from Nobel Prize winning research conducted by Elinor Ostrom, with corresponding findings from research in evolutionary science, behavior analysis, ACT, and Organizational Behavior Management. Participants will practice core skills and then implement them in a series of challenging role-plays that simulate real-life organizational behavior crises. This workshop will walk attendees through the entire process of creating sustainable team-based outcomes through expert instruction and experiential learning. The workshop itself will provide 16 CEU’s, and there’s a remote follow-up option that can extend this to 22 CEU’s. Space is limited for this event, and the prices go up as we get closer to the dates, so you’re going to want to register for OBM 2.0 straight away. And to help defray costs, the folks at Connections have offered listeners a discount. So for more information, click here, and be sure to use the code podcast25! And this one too... The 5th Annual ABA Leadership Summit is taking place on November 8th, 2019 at the Hilton Orange County in Costa Mesa California. It will also be streamed online, so you can learn on your couch... in sweatpants. This event will provide 6 Supervision Type 2 CE’s, and will feature speakers such as Sarah Trautman, Paul Gavoni, Nic Weatherly, Brett DiNovi, and Issac Bermudez. It's right around the corner so you'll want to register right away if this is something you're interested in. Click here for more information! Lastly, I am deeply grateful for the folks at Tate Behavioral for inviting me, Megan Miller, Ryan O’Donnell, and Kim Berens to be a part of the first annual Tate Behavioral Conference last week in Springfield MA. They were amazing hosts, and it was an honor to be a part of their inaugural event.
Anilu Vazquez-Ubarri is the Chief Human Resource Officer at TPG, one of the world’s largest private equity investment firms. Prior to moving to TPG, Anilu was the Chief Diversity Officer and Global Head of Talent Development at Goldman Sachs. Anna Edwin, is the Global Head of Talent Development at TPG and she works very closely with Anilu. Prior to TPG Anna was the Head of Global Leadership Development at BlackRock and VP Human Capital Management at Goldman Sachs. Anilu is actually the first ever CHRO at TPG and she is enjoying being able to shape that role. She says the firm has gone through several different evolutions of paying attention to its people, but they are now at a place where they are ready to have a specific team in place to intentionally create these experiences to set TPG apart from all other organizations. Some of the programs, benefits and perks that they are currently working on include: Updated parental leave that gives 12-18 weeks for primary care and 2-4 weeks for secondary care that can be taken anytime in the first year of becoming a parent Lunch is provided for employees They are currently working with Author of Radical Candor, Kim Scott to improve the ways they provide feedback to employees Updated performance review system that allows they to provide ongoing feedback rather than once or twice a year At TPG they are also focusing on providing flexibility, diversity and inclusion, and career planning for their employees as these are the biggest trends they are seeing when it comes to the future of work. Speaking to the growing trend of employees wanting a clear understanding of their career path inside the organization, Anna says, “I've noticed people lately, before accepting an offer, want to understand what their career trajectory is going to look like, asking for a little bit more of a, I won't call it a formula per se, but really wanting to have an understanding that they're going to be with an organization where they can grow. So they want to trust the organization that they're going with and hold people accountable in a different way than I'd say maybe historically you've seen in the market.” When it comes to finding and retaining the top talent Anilu says, “I think that the reputation of your firm is something that you can never take for granted. Because it is definitely the calling card in the market, and if that doesn't align, or if you have a different understanding of how you're perceived in the market, you are going to run into trouble. So I think that we keep very humble on that, but I feel very good about how we're positioned.” What you will learn in this episode: How TPG is shaping great experiences for their employees Anna and Anilu’s advice to managers on how to give intentional, effective feedback How hiring and retaining talent has changed Workforce trends they are paying attention to Changes they have made to the performance rating process Their thoughts on benefits and perks

“Service First, Safety Always” The Anatomy of a Private Equity Investment: from M&A roll-up, to IPO, and beyond with Advanced Disposal Services’ Chairman and CEO Richard Burke A CEO’s Virtual Mentor Episode 23 Welcome to episode 23 and the beginning of Season 4 of A CEO's Virtual Mentor. I'd like to express our special thanks to the clients of Lyceum Leadership Consulting that have enabled us to bring you this podcast, and to you, ladies and gentlemen, our devoted listenership, for your continued encouragement and programming suggestions. And let me mention that we cannot improve without your feedback and suggestions. Please take a moment and subscribe on iTunes or your favorite podcast platform, and rate us with your feedback. There are two main features on our program today. I. We occasionally feature a spot on the program called Famous Last Words. We will intersperse excerpts of a dramatic scene from the 1956 movie, “Patterns…of Power!”, through the breaks in our program. Patterns’ brilliant screenplay was written by Rod Serling of Twilight Zone fame. The Patterns script predated Twilight Zone and is considered by many as the finest piece of writing Rod Serling has ever done and brought him instant acclaim. We'll feature the dramatic scene between ruthless, cold, and calculating owner of the corporation Walter Ramsey, played by Everett Sloane, and youthful, charismatic and considerate industrial engineer, Fred Staples, played by Van Heflin. Ramsey is impressed with the performance of Fred Staples at a company Ramsey has recently acquired. Ramsey's grooming Staples to replace the struggling, but highly principled Bill Briggs, played by Ed Begley, as the second in command at the company. II. For our main event in the program, I'm joined by Richard Burke, Chairman and CEO of publicly-traded solid waste services company, Advanced Disposal Services. We'll be discussing Richard's leadership in a company that delivers a service punch well above its $1.6 billion weight class. We'll cover its evolution from private equity backed roll-up of solid waste businesses through its IPO in October of 2016 and right up to just prior to the announcement on April 15, 2019, that Waste Management would purchase Advanced Disposal. Our interview covers a lot of ground and addresses an array of situation-specific business leadership topics, including: The economics of the solid waste business. A company’s evolution from private equity ownership to IPO M&A and the "Four D’s" behind a seller’s motivation Corporate Reputation and Integrity Reputation Derived from Investors on the Path to an IPO Safety and Corporate Culture Post-IPO Board Composition Considerations We would like to express our special thanks to the clients of Lyceum Leadership Consulting that enable us to bring you this podcast.
