This simple instance of acting on a positive impulse led to the involvement of sales, public health, advocacy, and managed care departments and AHF partners to offer fentanyl test strips to countless patients and community members. Lives were potentially saved at the very first event where the strips were given out, after two people back to report they had detected deadly fentanyl in a drug sample. A couple days later, 300 units were gone after a single day of San Diego Pride.[7:54] - A Higher-Risk Patient BaseWhat AHF patients should knowAHF patients are at a higher risk of contracting HIV due to IV drug use, something that pharmacists and clinicians at AHF have to be mindful of when treating them. If fentanyl is injected, even if its been cut into other drugs, it can be fatal.[12:04] - Spreading the Word, Spreading the HelpGetting knowledge and test strips nationwideMaxie emphasizes the end goal of AHF's efforts— fighting the opioid epidemic. They've obtained a grant with the Naloxone Distribution Project which provides free units of Narcan, allowing them to hand them out to the community for free. They hope to spread this service to as many states as possible to make the largest possible impact— all while educating pharmacists on their role.[15:45] - If You're Struggling with AddictionThe first step is the most importantIf you're struggling with opioid addiction, know that you can always find support. With more than 100 million housing units and commercial buildings burning fossil fuels for space or water heating or for cooking across the United States, our building sector needs a major retrofit. Buildings cause 13 percent of the nation's greenhouse gas emissions, and every new fossil-fueled appliance or structure locks in higher emissions and costs for decades to come – not to mention serious health impacts from burning fuels indoors. To reach net-zero by 2050, we must electrify all new buildings by 2025 and all new building equipment by 2030. So how do we do this? Where is it happening? Who is leading and who is stalling? On this episode of Electrify This!, host Sara Baldwin speaks with building electrification experts to discuss efforts underway to get gas out of buildings and switch to clean electricity, including city leadership and California's new, landmark 2022 Energy Code.Guests: Denise Grab, Manager, Carbon-Free Buildings, RMI.  Denise works to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions from buildings in the West and across the U.S., and she brings over a decade of experience in advancing clean energy, climate, and clean air policy and law throughout the country. 241: The Loud and Confused Roe v. Wade, The Quiet but Deadly Doe v. Bolton

Life Matters

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 24, 2021 28:01

Commissioner Johnston knows attorneys who are actively involved in the abortion debate and on both sides of the issue. Many assert a mastery and working knowledge of Roe v. Wade’s intricacies. But honest lawyers will not make any such claim. Perhaps what is more frightening, he knows many more commentators and reporters who will ‘explain’ the decision at length.  The problem is, this ‘well-known’ decision cannot possibly be explained. It does not and cannot make sense.  Even liberal legal scholars like Alan Dershowitz,1 and Cass Sunstein,2 deny its ability to stand on its own merits. Progressive Professor Laurence Tribe is clear: "One of the most curious things about Roe is that, behind its own verbal smokescreen, the substantive judgment on which it rests is nowhere to be found."3 Edward Lazarus was a Blackmun law clerk who "loved Roe's author like a grandfather." He wrote: "As a matter of constitutional interpretation and judicial method .... Justice Blackmun's opinion provides essentially no reasoning in support of its holding. And in the almost 30 years since Roe's announcement, no one has produced a convincing defense of Roe on its own terms."4 It is only in understanding this problem of Roe that one can see the real significance of its companion decision, Doe v. Bolton. The decisions were linked and released in tandem. In Doe, Justice Blackmun switches themes entirely. He does not focus on stages of pregnancy or the woman. He now focuses on the individual who is about to do the abortion. Doe v. Bolton, in many ways, is written for ‘the doctor.’ The state’s interest in protecting life is specifically downgraded. The Hippocratic tradition of never harming a human life: dismissed. At any time in pregnancy psychological and societal questions could be the determining factor. No physical medical conditions need be present. (Doe, 410 U.S. 191) Blackmun’s definition of the ‘health’ of the mother in gauzy, ‘gestalt’ concepts, justified a deadly surgical act. By ‘combining it’ with the confusing Roe decision, he cleans up what he quietly had admitted is an arbitrary, pregnancy-stages framework.5 In Doe he cuts through the fog. He makes the physician’s opinion the arbiter of action. Known feminist and abortion-advocate, Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, has openly faulted the Court's approach for actually being, "about a doctor's freedom to practice his profession as he thinks best.... It wasn't woman-centered. It was physician-centered."6   It is this then, that is the real overarching issue in these decisions: legally-authorized, medical killing.   Pregnancy and abortion were confusedly and ham-handedly dealt with in Roe. But what is crisply and incisively granted to physicians in Doe is the right to use their profession to deadly effect and as they personally saw fit.  The quietly implemented, largely unexamined Doe decision is responsible for the implementation of America’s abortion practices. Three thousand years of ethical guidance had protected the physician, vulnerable patients, and civilized society from the quiet, easy way out: simply kill the human being in question. The temptation to cover mistakes; save money; accommodate coercion; reduce workload on overworked medical staff; abet antsy heirs; cease careful pain management by simply ceasing the life; diminish populations of ‘imperfect’ dependent individuals; all of these utilitarian motives are easily implemented – and quietly so - once there is no external rule or oath to never use medicine to kill. The Oath had served as the anchoring premise not only for medical doctors, but for society’s view of ‘unimportant’ human lives entrusted to them. We are now living with the ever-expanding implications of this casual and quiet dismissal of three millennia of medical ethics. As Justice Ginsburg ironically points out, this new, physician’s ‘right to choose’ is actually the only definitive, conclusive aspect of the deadly, twin decisions, Roe v Wade and Doe v Bolton.    1.Dershowitz, Alan. Supreme Injustice: How the High Court Hijacked Election 2000 (Oxford U. Press 2001): "Judges have no special competence, qualifications, or mandate to decide between equally compelling moral claims (as in the abortion controversy)...." 2. Sunstein, Cass. Quoted by McGuire, New York Sun (November 15, 2005)  3.Tribe, Laurence "Roe v. Wade and the Lesson of the Pre-RoeCase Law". Michigan Law Review. 77 (7): 1724–48. 4. Lazarus, Edward. "The Lingering Problems with Roe v. Wade, and Why the Recent Senate Hearings on Michael McConnell's Nomination Only Underlined Them, Findlaw's Writ (October 3, 2002). 5. Blackmun’s personal note to fellow justices. Quoted in Woodward, Bob. On this episode of the Life in the Carolinas podcast, Carl sits down with Ted Alexander. Apart from working at the North Carolina Senate, Ted also serves as the Western Regional Director for Preservation, North Carolina. Preservation, North Carolina is a statewide nonprofit organization that has been around in some form or another for about 81 years, having first started out as the North Carolina Society for the Preservation of Antiquities in 1939. The group looks to protect, preserve, and even repurpose built environments regarded as significant to the state’s heritage. These included properties that tell rich stories about North Carolina’s history, from Gastonia's Loray Mill Village to the Bellamy Mansion in Wilmington. When asked why it is important to preserve these historic buildings, Ted first makes it a point to give due credit to President J. Myrick Howard with the overall vision-mission of Preservation, North Carolina. He says that there are several reasons why these assets need to be preserved. For one, “there are some properties that are inherently important”, whether it was the home of a famous individual, the location of a significant event, or a very important piece of architecture of a certain style. Another reason for preservation is to “create a sense of place”, as historic buildings help to establish the identity of the community in terms of its values and self-image. A building might also “offer a very functional use in today’s world”, such as serving as a tourist attraction. Then there is the economic benefit to preserving historic assets, since not only do the buildings themselves go up in value, but they may also pave the way to further investments or the creation of more jobs. Finally, there is patriotic value to preservation, being an activity that brings the entire community together. According to studies, historic sites are almost always near the top of a tourist’s agenda. Ted says that modern travelers want to collect experiences—speaking particularly of millennials. He says that even smaller towns who understand this and do whatever they can to promote these historical buildings by telling their stories will have an edge as tourist destinations.   CONNECT: https://www.presnc.org/ www.lifeinthecarolinas.com Carl@lifeinthecarolinas.com   SEE MORE: https://youtu.be/pK78QQ4tLMM https://youtu.be/E_xCzuKeJ_c

International Experience USA (0:00:00) Traveling to a country you've never been to can be intimidating. Now, imagine traveling to a country you've never been to, in a city with a completely different culture than your own, living with a family you've never met in your life, with the intention of studying at a public school that runs completely different from the one you're used to. Stressful, right? Well, it doesn't have to be. In this week's segment highlighting a wholesome organization we found on JustServe.org, we wanted to spotlight International Experience USA. Focused on bringing unlikely cultures and people together, International Experience organizes families in the US to host foreign exchange students from around the world. Jennifer Iler, the non-profit's Western Regional Director, joins us to tell us more about their mission. Tech Scams (0:13:32) At this time of year, I always find myself doing more online shopping than ever before. It's a wonderful way to make holiday purchases, and buy and send gifts. But I always find myself wondering, what if this website is a scam? With us today one of the biggest names in technology, Anna P. Murray, CEO of EMEDIA and author of The Complete Software Project Manager. She's going to explain to us the upcoming trends in technology, and how to protect ourselves from getting scammed. Stress-Free Holidays (0:34:04) Despite fun traditions, nostalgic carols and tasty treats, the holidays can easily feel like a stressful time of year. So why do we feel this way during what is supposed to be a happy time? And what can we do to make the most out of our holiday season without feeling overwhelmed? Therapist John Sovec joins us to share how we can enjoy a stress-free December. Be a Good Gift Giver (0:50:35) Gifts are an integral part of the holidays. Work Christmas parties, family reunions, and gift exchanges are all great reasons to give and receive presents. But have you ever gotten a gift that you didn't like and want to take back? Or had someone give you a gift that you weren't planning on getting a gift in return? What is the proper etiquette when it comes to gift giving and receiving during the holidays? We are joined by friend of The Lisa Show Dan Senning from the Emily Post Institute. Dan is the great-grandson of Emily Post, and he presents all over the world about etiquette.  Mindful Eating (1:06:19) Have you ever said a word so many times that it starts to lose its meaning? (try it, a word that always does this for me is “bubble”) The phrase “mindful eating” is something that we hear so much that I'm not sure I really know what it means anymore. It sounds nice, but what does it actually look like?  And how can we eat this way? We've invited Laura Silver, a registered dietitian-nutritionist from New York to help us make sense of this health trend. 2020 Travel Trends (1:24:00) The years may pass by but one thing will never change, our love for travel! With every year comes the excitement of planning new trips full of adventure and fun places to see. As we prepare for the new decade, it's helpful to know about the upcoming travel trends of 2020. Western Regional Director of Global Media Outreach (GMO) Gary Schneider tells the story of the Gospel to millions of people around the world online.  There are over 6000 missionaries online to disciple new converts from the previous day.   Today, Gary is a man of great faith who brings people to the Lord, but he never expected as a young man to follow this path. Gary grew up in a home with an alcoholic father.   When he was 14 his parents got divorced and from age 14 to 17 things were very dark. There were many accounts of Gary being a bully and even a time when he went to jail.   He had one friend from high school named Keith who had a transformation.   Gary went with him to a youth group and learned what it was that had changed him so dramatically.  Gary committed himself to God and started on his path to ministry.  This is Gary’s testimony. “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come:The old has gone, the new is here!” - 2nd Corinthians 5:17 For past shows and to learn more about the God's Men of Influence community, check us out atwww.godsmenofinfluence.org Join us on Facebook for our daily devotionals and updates and please like our page www.facebook.com/GodsMenOfInfluence   Help us spread the Word and please rate our show on itunes and leave comments for us.   Sexual Abuse Awareness Week- "Child Sexual Abuse is nothing new. It remains horrifically part of our "enlightened society."  Whenever children innocently and vunlerably need adult attention, opportunistic adults may "groom" children in their care to become unwilling, manipulated sexual partners.  Parents, remain alert especially when childcare or extra-curricular activities afford adult sexual predators access to lure clueless, trusting children into private locations," explains Dr. Carol Francis. James R Dunlap, author of Millstone, a thrilling, fast paced, important novel about child sexual abuse, is a parent himself riveted with the damage his son suffered at the hands of a Catholic priest.   During Sexual Abuse Awareness Week, November 26, 2012, James Dunlap and dedicated supporters release Millstone (The Novel) to reveal these sexual predators and to save children from becoming their next victims.   Joelle Casteix joins the program today also as the  leading national spokesperson, writer, and advocate for victims of child sexual abuse.  She is also the Western Regional Director for SNAP, Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests. Former police officer Tom Townsend joins the show as well.  Having investigated several sexual abuse cases in his career and knowing the impact it has on children even as they grow into adults, Tom Townsend takes every opportunity he can to help prevent it and educate all children to speak out, reveal their abusers and seek help.
