There's something about the purity of independent cinema that just keeps storytelling alive...On this very special episode we get the distinct pleasure to sit down with writer/director Alexandre Rockwell to talk about his new film...'Sweet Thing'.Billie is a 15-year-old girl who fantasizes Billie Holiday as a sort of fairy godmother. Billie has to navigate the evolving challenges of her life while she plays mother to her 11-year-old brother, Nico. They meet up with another adolescent, run away from home, and together roam the area free from their parents' watchful eye. They discover freedom and enchantment among New Bedford's boats and railway tracks. They fantasize about a life of luxury when they break into a posh home, and are able to carry the taste of affluence into their adventures. This is a beautiful piece of independent cinema playing the IFC Center in New York and various other virtual cinema platforms today. We talked with Alexandre about the inspiration for the film, directing family, the meat grinder that is Hollywood, the future of film and allowing time for something beautiful to rise to the top of the pack much like 'Sweet Thing'....go check it out where ever you can.

Happy Loki Day! Note: we do not discuss Loki today, as it releases today and we recorded on Monday. You get it. But here is what we did discuss: - Kung Fu Corner! (10:25) - Dustin's Manifest Minute! (19:18) - We talk about shows we're catching up on from last year (Betty, Los Espookys, Home After Dark) (23:18) - The Mythic Quest flashback ep! (34:28) - The first episode of Sweet Tooth! This week, we talk to New Canaan High School junior Sage Fuhrman, who one year ago launched her own company. Born out of the high school’s Mitzvah Club, which she founded, Sweet Krackerz are pieces of unleavened mitzvah bread with different types of sweet toppings, such as chocolate, sprinkles, marshmallow, Oreos and Heath bars. Fuhrman in what she calls “acts of sweetness” gives the tasty treats away—to police, firefighters, EMTs, animal rescue groups and others. To keep it going, she also sells the Sweet Krackerz—at the Wilton Farmers Market and, starting this year, the Norwalk Farmers Market, as well.

Is there an ideal size for an owner-operator as he/she adds trucks, drivers and freight? The answer to that question is probably, well, "it depends." It's certain, though, that whether leased or independent with carrier authority, any owner is bound to reach a point where administrative and/or sales/operational demands outstrip his/her ability to handle everything -- and still haul. Cadle Trucking owner Ben Cadle is just about at that breaking point, and feels he may have reached his "sweet spot" of sorts at 11 full-time drivers and trucks in operation (12 if you count him and his "Joy Ride 3" cabover, too, though his hauling frequency seems less and less as time goes on). His fleet's size has doubled over the course of the last five years, and "I don't want any more trucks at this point, he said, “It gets to a certain point it's like, 'Yeah, I'm good.'” As have so many small fleet operators I've talked to through the years, Cadle credits his drivers as the bedrock of his success. Not that he's getting rich, he emphasizes, but rather “trying to get to a comfortable point, and that's about it. Trying to secure the future.” As are no doubt our three Small Fleet Champ finalists you'll hear in today's edition of the Overdrive Radio podcast: James Davis of JDT out of Oregon(platform freight), Evan Guckien of Indiana-based Ed Burns & Sons (mostly platform), and Louisiana tank hauler John McGee Trucking. All three here offer insights on hiring and retaining the best drivers, on the issue of size and manageability, on learning to delegate, on the huge challenges that small fleet owners with motor carrier authority are facing with insurance costs when it comes to primary commercial auto liability. And more.

Dr. Lindsay Farrell was a regular guest on our Going Deeper podcast and it is with heavy hearts that we acknowledge the recent passing of Lindsay into the arms of the Father last week. To honour a life well lived to the glory of God, in this episode we are rebroadcasting a previous episode (one of our favourites), 'Resurrection Life'.Lindsay was an artist, art historian, scholar and lover of Jesus. In this special episode, Lindsay speaks with Jo and Scott about the unexpected turn in the trail: a recent diagnosis of an aggressive brain tumor. Lindsay speaks candidly about living well and finishing well, about what really matters, and about living out the love of Jesus in all seasons of life. Lindsay's story will confront and challenge your own thoughts about our resurrection, life and death, and life after life after death in Jesus, and most importantly, asks us what we are doing with the time that God has given each of us.If this episode has raised any issues for you that you need to talk to someone about, please contact us at Riverlife Church.Resources/Links mentioned in this episode or helpful for Going Deeper:Web: Noosa CaminoWeb: Wendy ChenowethThe artwork Lindsay mentions:'Sweet' by Wendy Chenoweth,'Noosa Camino Site 5: The Sand Track' by Lindsay Farrell'Forgiving Father' woodblock print by Frank Wesley'Cristo Risorgente' (The Risen Christ) by Tintoretto (GOMA)Book: Disappearing Church by Mark SayersPodcasts:Lindsay Farrell on Going Deeper #43 - Revival History - St Francis of AssisiLindsay Farrell on Going Deeper #17 - Spiritual Disciplines: Transformation in TraditionLindsay Farrell Going Deeper #16 - Spiritual Disciplines: Walking in the WayThanks to Tim Whittle for production on this episode.Get more info at Riverlife Church, and find us on Facebook and Instagram. BIG NEWS! We have a new logo! Oh yeah, and this week Adam spoke with one of the most polarising players of recent years in Jamie Soward! Whether it was his goal kicking technique, his pre-game pump up antics or his very straight forward approach to voicing his opinion, Jamie certainly left his mark on the game of rugby league. Jamie not only was willing to answer any question but his answers carried a depth of analysis most may not expect. He opened up about his club transfers, passions off the field and how his motivation towards the end of his career was challenged due to injury. He is now enjoying a promising media career and with his recent podcast release (discussed in the show), Jamie will certainly be in our lives for years to come. We also look into whether Channel 9's threat carries any weight or will a new TV deal be struck with a rival organisation? Check out our YouTube Channel that is now up and running! How do you start adding living mulch to your garden? One of the simplest ways, is just to look for the spots in your garden that are bare. Look for the open areas and start there. Look under your shrubs. Look along the edges of your beds. Instead of adding another layer of mulch, add plants. Think about planting these living mulches in terms of planting families. In other words, planting en masse. This is what the naturalists and ecologists do naturally; They think about plants in terms of population. New gardeners tend to think of A PLANT and not A PLANTING; so think bigger. Think community. Think about the way you see plants occurring naturally. Even the weeds tend to show up with their brothers and sisters. If one finds purchase, they send out an Evite. The next thing you know, there’s a family reunion of Canadian Thistle or Creeping Charlie and you get to be the host. With this in mind, it’s right about this time of year, that I remind myself how much I like the giant allium. And, how I fervently wish I would’ve planted that allium as a member of a very, very, very large extended family; the Everybody Loves Raymond kind of family, because one can never have enough allium. Brevities #OTD Today is St. Bernard Tolomeo's Day, the Patron Saint of Olive Growers. Saint Bernard was from Tuscany and he was born there in 1272. He was going to be a lawyer, but then he pursued the church after he recovered his eyesight after an illness. He'd made a deal with God. He chose the name Bernard after the habit of Clairvaux - we mentioned him yesterday - he is the patron saint of bees and beekeepers. Bernard became the patron Saint of Olives because t he Abbey where Tolomeo lived, St Mary of Olivet, was the site of an olive plantation. The location became known as Mount Olivet. Here are some here are a few quick fun facts about Olives: Olives are a fruit and not a vegetable. The first olive harvest occurs after 15 years of growing. The next time you’re feeling impatient, remember the olive. Olive trees are some of the oldest live plants on earth. They’re considered evergreens. One of the oldest all of trees is on the island of Crete is an Olive and it’s estimated to be about 4,000 years old and it is still producing fruit. Finally, the color of the fruit is completely dependent on the maturity – unripe fruit is green and the ripe is dark purple to black (like tomatoes and peppers). #OTD It was on this day that the botanist George Taylor died in 1891. Taylor had immigrated from Scotland at the age of 53. He brought his family to the United States and they settled in Kalamazoo Michigan in 1855. Taylor's brothers were already there, so it was an easy decision. Once he got settled, George became known as "Celery" after he started growing celery commercially. Kalamazoo had what was called "muckland" which was "valueless for anything other than growing to celery." Once, when a botanist visited the area, he said that the land was black muckland of a peaty nature which is best for celery. In Kalamazoo, there is a little plaque dedicated to George Celery Taylor. Thanks to Taylor, Kalamazoo became known as the Celery City or Celeryville In 1880, the Detroit Free Press shared an article that talked about the celery beds that were growing. It said this: "Driving north from Kalamazoo, through the country, one passes great 100-acre farms devoted to the sweet-scented celery, reminding one of that Methodist hymn: 'Sweet fields beyond stand dressed in living green.' One would never forget a drive through the celery gardens in any direction from Kalamazoo; the long rows keeping their bright green till November, as crop follows crop; and the fields being unmarred by fences or anything except the cozy cottages of the thrifty Hollanders." And there was a fun little article that was posted in The Herald Press out of St Joseph Michigan in 1956. It talked about the early days of celery growing and it had an adorable story about George Celery Taylor: "In the fall of 1856, there was a big party that was going to be held at the Burdock House Hotel on December 19. It was going to be a big gathering with lots of people from all over and Mr. Taylor thought it would be a good opportunity to advertise celery. As the unknown vegetable, [Taylor] persuaded the owner of the hotel to put celery on his menu and the people were curious about it. They asked, "how do you eat this?" "Is it grown from seed?" It just grew in popularity from there." In the 1870s, the celery growers would have children sell it on the street which created a demand for celery. They also met all of the trains that that came into town. They would give it to the conductors on the New York trains and asked them to take a bunch. The next thing you know, the market for celery was off to the races. #OTD It was on this day that the botanist and German poet Adelbert van Chamiso died. When he was 30, Chamiso ended up in Switzerland where he decided to devote himself to botanical research. In 1815, he was appointed the botanist for a Russian expedition. He collected on the Cape of Good Hope. He ended up in the San Francisco Bay area and he wrote about the California poppy which he named Eschscholzia californica after his friend Johanns Friedrich Von Eschscholz. In return, Eschscholz named a bunch of plants after him - a little quid pro quo. #OTD Today is the anniversary of the death of Dorothy Adlington Cadberry who died on this day in 1987. As a botanist, Dorothy was an expert on pond weeds. Dorothy was also a quaker and she was devout her entire life through. In 1937, she joined the Wildflower Society and every year she would write down records; taking notes on the landscape her. Then, she’d send them to the society as soon as the first signs of life happened in her garden and in the world around her. Sometimes when spring came early, she sent the records as early as the first week of March. Dorothy was also a business person. She was the director of Cadberry; the world's second-largest candy company. #OTD On this day in 2005, we lost the botanist Mary Bowerman, who was the co-author of The Flowering Plants and Ferns of Mount Diablo California. Bowerman was responsible for the preservation of thousands of acres of Mount Diablo before she died at the age of 97. Bowerman was last person to record the Mount Diablo buckwheat until it was re-discovered, after 70 years, in 2005. She was clearly an expert on the flora of Mount Diablo; she spent over 75 years studying it. Her doctoral advisor was none other than Willis Linn Jepson - the Botany Man. Bowerman was his last surviving student when she died. She wrote once, “Little did I know, 65 years ago, that my senior project would become my life‘s work.“ Bowerman worked tirelessly toward her dream, “that the whole of Mount Diablo including its foothills should remain open space and that the visual and natural integrity will be sustained.“ She got her wish. Unearthed Words "August creates as she slumbers, replete and satisfied." - Joseph Wood Krutch "The brilliant poppy flaunts her head Amidst the ripening grain, And adds her voice to sell the song That August's here again." - Helen Winslow Today's book recommendation: Rosemary Gladstar's Medicinal Herbs This is such a good book. You get to learn how to make your own herbal remedies - and Gladstar make it makes it so easy. She’s been training herbalists for 25 years at her Sage Mountain Retreat Center in Vermont. This is an excellent guide for figuring out some herb basics and their practical uses from one of the best herbalists in America. Today's Garden Chore Try planting Cardinal Flower, Lobelia cardinalis. If you have a wet spot in your garden, Cardinal Flower could be perfect for that spot. Cardinal Flower doesn't have to be red. The easy-care native perennial can sends up spikes of white or pink, (in addition to red), from midsummer to fall. Cardinal flower grows in zone 3 - 9. The plants grow 2-4 feet tall. Cardinal Flower is also a major pollinator plant; the birds love it, the butterflies love it, and even hummingbirds love it. And bonus: it's also deer and rabbit resistant. It grows well in sun or part shade. Something Sweet Reviving the little botanic spark in your heart Finally, here’s a little post from a columnist named Ruth Oren, out of a newspaper in Lebanon, Pennsylvania in 1966. I read it and I thought you would enjoy it. It's a little reminder about not overdoing it in the fall: "Midsummer is the time to enjoy a "no-gardening" garden. If you find yourself up to your ears in gardening chores, something is wrong. This pause in mid-summer is necessary for humans as well as plants. What's the point of creating a lovely garden and never having the time to enjoy it? Thanks for listening to the daily gardener, and remember: "For a happy, healthy life, garden every day."

Starting 2018 off right with The Hip Hop Snack Podcast. Featuring current and up & coming artist with some familiar and unfamiliar records on display. Hopefully you will enjoy this episode as it is loaded with R&B records. I heard this mix from Yurimagination over on his Soundcloud page and I was digging it so much that I felt it was worth a listen on this podcast. Below is his description involving his inspiration behind this mix. The idea of this mix series/radio show started from loving R&B music. I also wanted to be more consistent with creating and putting out more content. I grew up loving the way the music made me feel and to this day, I love the way it complements my emotions. I wanted to create something that could reach like-minded people who appreciate R&B in a similar way. I was inspired by the, “Quiet Storm,” radio format, which I’ve been listening to ever since I was a kid. I wanted to put my own spin on it and implement my taste of the genre to shine light on old gems and newer one’s. Long story short, that’s how Sweet Nothings Radio came to be. I wanted this to be what someone puts on when they’re driving home on a Sunday night. New episodes will be uploaded bi-monthly on the second Sunday of the month.
2013 has given Australian music icon, Russell Morris, an unexpected hit record some 44 years after his first national number one smash with pop-psychedelic smash, The Real Thing. I produced this music feature with Russell in 2014, although I first met him in about 1992 when I interviewed him in Hobart. He's smart, funny, brilliant and has always been just bloody fabulous and generous to me. Except for that time he rang my show to wish me a happy birthday and I thought he was JPY! Sorry, Russell! xxAustralian music industry icon Russell Morris joined Carol Duncan's program while doing a series of performances in Newcastle and surrounds. (Carol Duncan:Carol Duncan)"This album (Sharkmouth) was done out of a labour of love because I like roots and blues music and I'd always wanted to do a roots and blues album.""I chose Australian history because I've always loved any type of history. You'd think the two kisses of death for a gold album would be blues and Australian history, so it wasn't done with the intention, it was just done as a labour of love which has proved to be really enlightening.""Producer Mitch Cairns' foresight was out of desperation of staying alive. At that stage, Brian Cadd who I was working with, had decided that he was going overseas and he dropped the bomb on us that he might not be coming back.""At that stage Jim Keays was very sick and Mitch said, "You've gotta do something or we won't have any work!" And I said, "Well, I've got the blues album," and he said, "Well, FINISH IT!""It is a great thing (the success of Sharkmouth) and I have to thank particularly the ABC because they ABC embraced it from day one and just went 'bang', but the commercial stations just didn't want to know. The ABC just broke it right across the country.""If anyone was going to have a gold record this year you'd have put me at the bottom of the list.""I think what happens with a lot of my peers, a lot of people will see a new record and whether it's from Joe Camilleri, Daryl Braithwaite - they pre-judge it and don't listen to it.""I remember when we first started in Melbourne, Ian Meldrum said to me, "We'll go and see Stan Rofe at 3AW." Stan Rofe was a big star to me, he was on air and I'd heard him on the radio station and I said, "Well how are we going to do that?" and he said, "We'll just go up to the radio station!""So we went up to the radio station and walked in and Stan came down and had a cup of tea with us. Ian said, "We've got this, what do you think?" and Stan said, 'Love it, I'll play it.'And that's what it was like.""Well, Mitch and I spoke about it (initial expectations of Sharkmouth) and I said if we're lucky we might sell 5,000 copies, if we can get an independent release.""We'd have sold them at gigs to try and get our money back and if we had a small deal with a company and sold 5,000 or 8,000 we'd have made the money back." Gold status is in 2013 is 35,000 and Sharkmouth is now creeping up towards platinum - it's around 60,000 now and platinum is 70,000.""When I did the unplugged album with Liberation it sold around 8,000 so it's been a great experience for both of us.""We signed to an independent record company and they took it and then rang me up, the first time it went in to the charts at about number 89, then it jumped to 49 and I was over the moon. I rang Mitch and we celebrated, and then the next week it jumped 20 places again and it just kept going right up into the top 10."Russell has continued a great tradition started by The Beatles of being turned down by every record company in the country and then having a success."I tell you what is ironic, The Real Thing was turned down as well. EMI hated it, they thought it was the biggest load of rubbish they'd ever heard.""EMI didn't want to release it, they were only going to release it in Melbourne to try and make their money back because I had a following in Melbourne, so Ian Meldrum and I got in a car and drove to Sydney to go and see all the (radio) program managers because at that stage you could knock on the door of these commercial stations before they became corporate and say, "Can I speak to the program manager," "Here's the song, what do you think, our record company think it's a load of rubbish, would you play it?" 'Of course we'll play it, will you sign that?'"So we signed a petition that came out to really stick it to the record company. Radio and record companies at that stage weren't getting along very well. It was just prior to the record ban where radio wanted to stop paying royalties to radio for playing songs on the air."Russell Morris is thought of as having lots of pop hits and a pure voice but he dabbled in blues back in the 1970s when he used musicians from Chain on one of his albums."They were my favourite band. I always use Barry Harvey and Barry Sullivan always, on everything, and I'd always used Phil Manning, so strangely enough it's actually Phil Manning playing all those licks in 'Sweet, Sweet Love' and you'd think, 'Who's this syrupy guitar player?' and it's Phil Manning!""It's (blues) where I wanted to head but I was painted into a corner once I had a pop hit and the record company saying, 'You've got to produce another hit!' and it became a factory after a while. You get caught in it.""I actually wished Chain had been my band because it would have taken me on a whole other direction. I don't think Ian, Molly, would have been too happy although at that stage we'd sort of split.""He's still my best mate but we'd had a couple of professional disagreements. He saw me as Australia's Davey Jones from The Monkees or some such thing and I wanted to go in a different direction completely as a singer/songwriter so we differed on the way we were going and the record company was pressuring for another single, but I really would have loved to be with a band like Chain.""But your fate is your fate. Whatever happens, those doors open and close for a reason and maybe if I'd started it earlier then it wouldn't have worked.""I was happy doing The Real Thing, I quite liked psychedelia. I didn't like pop a lot but I remember Ian (Molly Meldrum) had done a number of songs with me and we'd done 'Only A Matter of Time' which I absolutely loathe, it was on the back of The Real Thing, and a couple of pop songs and I said to Ian, 'This is rubbish, we're not going in the direction I want to go,' I said, 'I'm not John Farnham, I'm not Ronnie Burns and I'm not Normie Rowe. I want to do something that they wouldn't even contemplate thinking about doing. I want to go in that direction. Let's go psychedelia, let's go into something more band oriented than a pop single.'"Ian, to his credit, agreed and said, 'You're right, they're not different enough."Russell Morris actually had a whole album ready to go at one stage and decided it wasn't good enough and he wanted to re-record the whole thing."EMI had gotten a record producer and he'd gotten a head of steam up and away he went. I tend to go along with things and say to people, 'I don't know if this is the right thing ...' and they don't listen, they don't listen ... and all of a sudden they go, 'You know what? Scrap it.' And that's what happened. He went ahead and put strings and brass on everything and it just drove me insane. I said to him, 'I'm not releasing it."Russell Morris on recording The Real Thing."We used 8-track recording for The Real Thing. There was only two tracks for the effects, one for the vocals, everything just kinda got bounced down, I don't think we even slaved another machine to worry about generations. I think we did slave another machine for the effects.""I cannot take any credit for it. Ian Meldrum was the total architect, it was his concept from start to finish.""A lot of it was trial and error, experimentation, but giving Molly his dues he doesn't know what he wants in the studio but when he stumbles across it he knows instinctively that it's right. Everyone else will be nodding off at 3am and he'll have had some poor bloody guitar player out there playing the part over and over, 'No! Try it this way! Try something else! Make it sound like stars!' And that's what happens."In December 2011, Ian 'Molly' Meldrum had a serious fall while at home which for a while it seemed he wouldn't survive."He wasn't putting up Christmas lights. I was with him that day and I think that was a story that got fed around.""I was there that day, the reason he fell is because of him. We were doing a song for Jerry Ryan who was doing The Green Edge, the cycling team, and I was doing a duet with Vanessa Amorosi.""Ian had the master tapes and he said, 'Can you take these down to Sing Sing as you're going home?" So I left. "He was about to head to Thailand and he probably thought he'd catch some extra rays of sun. He's got a latter cemented into the side of his wall which goes up to a sun deck. He was climbing up there with his mobile phone, his cigarettes and trying to juggle those and lost his balance and fell.""He would have died except his gardener, Joe, happened to be there. It was real touch and go as to whether he was going to survive but he's great now.""It was funny. They (the hospital) said, 'Ian wants to see you in hospital. You cannot talk to him about mobile phones. If he asks for your mobile phone you cannot give it to him. If he asks for drinks you can't go and get him one. Do not talk to him about getting out of hospital.""It was horrifying. I thought I was going to get in there and expected to see Ian sitting in a wheelchair and drinking soup through a straw, but I got in there and there he is sitting with his baseball cap on and his tracksuit reading the paper!""I said, 'Ian, I expected you to be sitting here dribbling, everyone's given me such a hard time!' And he said, 'Oh they're all such pains in the ....' "And they'd said to me, 'You cannot stay any longer than 20 minutes and if he shows any aggravation you have to leave immediately.""My 20 minutes came up and I said I'd better go but he said, 'Don't be ridiculous!" "I ended up staying for two hours.""I was also off to Thailand and flew out the next day. I got to Thailand and I got an email from Amanda Pelman who is Brian Cadd's partner who's great friend of Ian's, and it says, 'What have you done? Where is Ian? You were the last person to see him and now he's disappeared?""After I left, Ian started to figure out how to get out of there because you can't get out of the ward without a special card and the nurses won't let you out.""He conjured this story and told told them, 'I've decided to do physio' which he'd been refusing to do, and they said, 'Oh that's great Ian, when do you want to start, Monday?""He said, 'I want to start now, if you want me to do physio I want to go over and have a look and do it now.'" So they took him.""They got a nurse to take him over and took him down the street and as they got to the street he turned one way and just kept walking.""They couldn't find him!"

Episode 16 is here, it would probably be a themed 'Sweet 16' episode if that was a thing that had any cultural resonance in the Northeast of England. But it hasn't, so it isn't.
