Scottish singer/songwriter James Yorkston released his 10th studio album The Wide, Wide River as James Yorkston & The Second Hand Orchestra earlier this year. After almost 20 years playing with band members who were often friends (The Athletes, Yorkston/Thorne/Khan and the Fence Collective among others) he teams up with a collective of Swedish musicians, most of whom he had never met before the studio recordings. This brave experiment works lending the songs an air of surprise and a lightness of touch while lyrically tackling themes of loss, ageing and depression. 'Sometimes you have to shake things up,' James tell me of this experiment. He also discusses some of the other unusual choices his made that has helped shaped the kind of musical career that suits him. Many thanks for making this possible — James for your time, humor and songs of joy in spite of sadness. To Domino Publishing Company and Domino Recording Company for use of songs from the albums Moving Up Country, The Year of the Leopard, When The Haar Rolls In, The Cellardyke Recording & Wassailing Society and The Wide, Wide River. Thank you to James Yorkston, for providing "3 Speed Wilfred" (By Huckleberry — written by James Yorkston, vocals by Vic Galloway, Reuben Taylor on Hammond organ and Stu Bastiman on drums). In this third instalment in the mini-series 'Not Just An International Author', Lee talks to author, speaker and LinkedIn expert, who joins Lee to talk about her array of skills, her business journey so far, and why it might well be time to rethink that LinkedIn profile of yours... KEY TAKEAWAYS LinkedIn profiles are often simply structured as online resumes, when in fact they should be crafted so as to give a far better picture of who you really are. People are attracted to a story. By creating your own narrative, you essentially welcome people into that story. A LinkedIn profile needs to aligned to your goal. We need to ask ourselves what the true purpose of our presence there, really is. A reworked LinkedIn profile may sometimes receive less hits, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It may mean that you're getting more qualified hits - that you have refined it to suit your actual target audience. BEST MOMENTS 'The LinkedIn profile is more than just your online resume' 'You can control what people think through the story you tell' 'When you tell your story and let people how you shine and why you shine, good things happen to you' 'Sometimes it's not even on LinkedIn that you'll feel the success' VALUABLE RESOURCES Business Problems Solved Podcast       Donna Serdula - https://donnaserdula.com ABOUT THE HOST For the last 15 years, I have been a multi-sector internal or external business improvement consultant, building the improved capability of individuals, teams and businesses. With me today are the two real-life DEA agents whose work is chronicled in the hit Netflix series Narcos. Steve Murphy and Javier Pena were both assigned by the DEA to work in Medellin, Colombia with the task of taking down Pablo Escobar. They were directly responsible in large part for the ultimate success of that operation. While there, both of these guys did their jobs with the spectre of six-figure bounties on their respective heads. Needless to say, this is one of the most badass accomplishments by any men within the last forty years, for sure. But these days, both Steve and Javier are retired after 38 years of service each, and you won't believe how down-to-earth and easy-going they are. It's like I've always observed, when real men accomplish great things they typically don't act as if they have anything to prove...because they don't. Experiencing how these guys carry themselves and hearing their insane stories is reason enough to tune in to this amazing episode, but the pure gold is mined when the topic du jour is covered in earnest. I brought up a direct quote from the Narcos series: 'Sometimes you gotta do bad things to catch bad people.' I was both amazed and thrilled to find that neither of my guests had ever been asked about that, so you're in for a world exclusive from the quintessential experts on the subject. What do men of character do when good seems to be the enemy of best? How does a man embrace his dark side when there's really no other choice? You'll love the discussion. In this week's dynamic '15 Minutes To Action' episode, Nick reflects upon a piece of advice he received from Jay Abraham regarding three fundamental ways in which you can grow your business. KEY TAKEAWAYS The three ways to grow: Increase the number of customers Increase the transaction size Increasing the purchase frequency Far too many businesses focus on one of the three ways in order to grow. By focussing on more than one we exponentially increase our growth potential. There's a mathematical equation running behind all three ways. When combined they multiply upon themselves, maximising your growth. The simple answer is the best one. The solution staring you directly in the face is the one that will solve the most problems. BEST MOMENTS 'It's not so much about understanding what the three things are, but implementing them' 'Of course there are different ways of activating the three things' 'If you optimise all three together it reduces the risk of something not working, and can produce exponentially greater results' 'Sometimes we look to solve problems in a complex way' VALUABLE RESOURCES Scale Up Your Business – scaleup.vip/podcast Join the free Scale Up Your Business community: scaleup.vip/community Take the Six Peaks of Value Creation Scorecard, to measure your current business performance and show you where to focus to get to where you want to be: https://scaleup.vip/sixpeaks          ABOUT THE HOST My name is Nick Bradley. This week, Lyn talks to relationship healing coach Puja Shah, about the ways in which our relationships are suffering, and the tools we can acquire and develop in order to heal and help them thrive.  KEY TAKEAWAYS We quite often bring the wounds of our past negative relationships into next one. This is why it is so important to nurture ourselves and our relationships, and work on ones that have become fractured to help them recover and be healthy again. Relationships can be challenging, but as we overcome obstacles, we can learn valuable lessons and find ourselves growing with our partner rather than resenting them. It is easy to change, we can choose to positively 'respond' rather than negatively 'react' to certain events & triggers. By having a more conscious response we step into our power, and that's what can make a huge effective difference. Self care looks different for everyone. For some it might be quiet 'time out' to find peace and harmony. For others, it may be doing something completely random. We must empathise with those around us, and realise that for the most part we are all doing the best we can. BEST MOMENTS 'I like to tell everyone if I have a solution to something' 'I thought I was the problem' 'Sometimes we 'let go' of who we are when we enter a relationship' 'Don't keep repeating the same old broken record'  VALUABLE RESOURCES Hearts Entwined Podcast Apple Podcasts (iTunes) Spotify Stitcher  ABOUT THE GUEST Puja Shah is a relationship Healing Coach she helps women unhappy in their marriages to overcome marital challenges without trying to change their husband. SACRED is an alternative life improvement system aimed at helping individuals bring all parts of self into balance and into a heightened state of awareness.  SACRED serves to recalibrate the human energy field using a unique delivery, effectively training the subtle energies surrounding a person to support a heightened state of enlightenment. SACRED incorporates meditation, tapping, breath work, affirmations, images channeled through intuitive communications and a gentle daily practice to reinforce the energy field shift. During this mini-series we will explore with guests various SACRED topics, specifically focused on Unity and Connectivity. In Part Four, Paul and his special guests, Aimee Mosco and Dr Kimberlee Woods, talk about our connection to the natural world through plants and animals, along with a special guest from Damanhur, site of the Temple Of Humankind. KEY TAKEAWAYS Human beings have always desired a more robust connection with the natural world, expressing this through attempts to communicate with plants and animals through our own means of communicating. Passions are always better shared through a group, where ideas become more fertile, and where imagination and creativity can flourish. We as a society must embrace the fact that plants are conscious beings, each with their own abilities and contributions to the world. For many people, there is a sense that a component of life is missing. Some find this missing piece in religion. Others fins it by connecting to the natural world. BEST MOMENTS 'Some people think you're a bit strange for talking to plants' 'We like to study and make it a part of our daily life' 'We recognise the energy of a person' 'Sometimes we feel the sensation that there is something we are missing...' Robs Did You Know took place, as did the TrendZone featuring some great sound from around the world! Former Bills center, charitable conquistador, current football analyst and now podcaster Eric Wood joined us on the show this morning to talk about none other than his Buffalo Bills and the success they've had this year—and what he hopes to see on Saturday. He told us some cool stories about his playing career and even gave us some insight on the guys and matchups for the Bills and Ravens for this weekends matchup! From Pegula Sports and Entertainment, John Durbin joined us to discuss the latest news about the Sabres making available the chance to purchase a cardboard cutout to sit in the stands all season long! The purchase cost would go to the Sabres Foundation and it would help to make the stands feel less vacant while still making it customized for Sabres fans! We played a game called 'Bird or Bird Watcher' in which Bull had a list comprised of 3 Baltimore Ravens players and 3 National Audobon Society members and asked Rob and Chris questions competing to see who could nail more correct ones! We encouraged you to play along because it was pretty tough to tell which was which; but it helped us prepare for this weekends playoff matchup! There are some really strange laws nearly everywhere in this country. However a certain hotspot for crazy laws happens to be where the Bills opponent is from this weekend: Baltimore. Rob went thru a list of stupid laws he from from Maryland and tried to quiz and stump us on which laws were real and which ones werent. Not only did we learn a lot about law in Maryland but we had some good laughs too, as usual.  ONLY AVAILABLE on the Morning Bull Podcast! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Michael is a mine engineer by background with extensive experience in Western Australia, and is also the director of the Camborne School of Mines in the UK, so we discuss what is happening with some of the universities around the world suspending some of their mining courses and what impact that will have in the industry in the future. We also talk about what the industry needs to do to attract more young people into mining and what are the key drives to achieving this. KEY TAKEAWAYS For previous generations, mining was seen as an exotic industry to be in due to its opportunities for travel and education around the world. This image seems to have waned somewhat, but we must revitalise it if we hope to attract the next generation. Mining takes place out of sight and out of mind for many. It is a distant industry that is not part of the common culture unless something goes wrong. We must do more to encourage visibility. New graduates should not concentrate so much on securing the first rung of the ladder in terms of career progression, It's far better to take the first job that pays and get started! Your first job in no way sets your career path. To improve credibility, we must ensure that operations are adhering to first-world rule and regulations in order to surpass expectations. BEST MOMENTS 'I realised what an important part of the economy it was, and how many opportunities there were' 'There's an inherent amount of ignorance in society about what we do' 'If you don't make the grade, these groups will not invest in you' 'Sometimes you're dealing with the president of country one day, and drillers the next day!' Feeling Misunderstood or Unworthy with Maisie Hill “Choose Carefully Who You Share Your Vision With.” — Maisie Hill (05:26-05:28) Many people feel misunderstood or unworthy even if they look good on the outside. To help dispel these negative feelings, Dianne Allen has invited Maisie Hill from the United Kingdom as this week’s guest. Maisie is a highly qualified and sought-after women's health expert with over a decade of experience as a practitioner and birth doula. Maisie knows the power of working with the menstrual cycle and believes that our hormones are there to serve us and help get what we want out of life. In the growing trend of women getting a handle on their menstrual cycle, Maisie is a go-to authority and has been quoted in publications from The Guardian to Grazia. Her first book, Period Power, came out May 2nd, 2019, and became an instant bestseller, reaching the Top 50 of all books on Amazon. She loves yoga classes, long-distance walks, Downton Abbey, toasted buckwheat tea, cozy blankets, cooking, tending her plants and slurping ramen. Part One of ‘Feeling Misunderstood or Unworthy with Maisie Hill’ Maisie says, 'Sometimes we get confronted with uncomfortable situations that make us feel misunderstood and unworthy. But these negative feelings push us to be clear with our life goals. During my early twenties, I had a very strong vision. The hard thing about that is that other people don't see your vision no matter how powerful you think it is. I'm a big fan of visioning my way into my future. And what does that look like? What does that feel like? That's where I draw a real sense of strength for what I want for my life and for how I'm serving or helping others. It's good if you have people who are going to at least listen without judgment. If they are going to offer up an opinion, let it be constructive and ideally positive. But it's hard because if we're sharing a vision with someone who's not that interested, then they're not going to get it and doubt your capabilities." Maisie’s success in writing and publishing makes it tempting to characterize her as an overnight success. In fact, it's a decade of hard work that brought her where she is today. “If I can do it, you can do it too.” – Dianne Allen (22:38-22:42) Maisie had a horrific period of pain. The kind that that leaves you no choice but to stay in bed for two days, dosed up on painkillers, with a scorching hot water bottle strapped to your belly. That was her life for 15 years until she decided to do something about it. And she did a lot. She tried about every type of treatment going. Here’s a fantastic story about one of her clients: "There was someone that I worked with, towards the end of last year. She had gotten in touch with me to work through some menstrual cycle issues because I do online coaching sessions with people. And so, we were doing a whole program together. In the beginning, we were focusing on her particular symptoms that show up with her cycle. Then kind of a third of the way through, something interesting started to happen, and I had progressed with her symptoms and psycho related stuff, and that freed her up. The thing is when you're struggling with health issues, and you don't have that strong foundation, it keeps you locked in a place. But when you work on that and you nourish, you strengthen yourself, you resolve the health symptoms that you have, and you improve them enough. So, she found herself in a situation where we could talk about, instead of just dealing with the issues, how to use her cycle to get what she wants out of life. And we were having a conversation like, where do you want to go in the next year or so? Like what is your vision? What do you want to move towards, and how can we use your cycle to get you that quicker? It was incredible. And we, by the time we'd reached the end of the coaching, she had done something in her business. She reached her goal that she didn't think she'd be able to do until halfway through this year. It happened so fast, and she was such an amazing client to work with. There was a mixture of salting her symptoms out. But also helping her to move forward with her business and to take a great, scary leap. That was amazing to witness." Part Two of ‘Feeling Misunderstood or Unworthy with Maisie Hill’   Dianne is in complete agreement with Maisie. "Many times I hear women talking down and bad about their bodies feeling unworthy because of their period, their cycle or any part of being a woman. That whole idea of being not good enough and not measuring up as part of it, which to me is the opposite. I'm sure you run into people who think that it's not very good being a woman and I don't want to deal with this. And that creates more pain."   “It’s great to be surrounded by people who love your works.” – Maisie Hill (30:56-31:01)   Don't listen to anyone's opinion unless they are doing the same level of work. If anyone's offering unwanted opinions and criticism, block them out. Instead, listen to the people who are doing big things. It's so important to be mindful of who's in your world and whose opinions you value.   Have people around you who think what you're doing is terrific. You need a community that is going to hold you accountable, hold a mirror up to you, and help you to see yourself in every aspect.   If what Maisie saying rings a bell in your spirit, I encourage you to connect with her in whatever way you feel most comfortable. HRD Insights - Resilience and Relationships - Dan Simpson of Siemens

The HR Uprising Podcast

In this HR Uprising episode, Lucinda is joined by Dan Simpson, Head of People and Leadership in Europe at Siemens. They explore a variety of topics, mainly exploring Dan's journey and career progression through the world of HR. In addition, they also discuss the benefits and drawbacks of working for a large global organisation. Overall, providing key HRD insights that can be applied at all levels of HR. Key Takeaways Dan's experience in people began in Sainsbury's, where he joined the staff council in the hopes of bolstering his CV. His provocative questions and initiative saw to it that a career in HR began soon afterwards. One of the most valuable lessons learned early on was that no-one in the HR world should deem to know their people if they don't know how the business itself works from top to bottom. HR is about being a partner to the business, and helping the business build the capability it needs to deliver its own promises to its stakeholders. Relationships have been key to not just Dan's career, but the growth of the HR industry in general. HR is all about leveraging the most useful and talented members of a business in order to make it stronger. The danger of scanning the outside and bringing it in is that context can be lost along the way. Context is extremely important when trying to design things that make sense to your environment. When it comes to diversity and inclusion, advocacy is never enough. With the help of his team, Dan was able to provide data-based conclusions in order to promote these vital causes in business. The trick of great organisational development (O.D.) is to frame the problem around “generative images”. Decide where you are now, and encourage people to describe it to you with the problems that go with that. Best Moments 'Two weeks later I found myself in an assessment centre' 'Never let anyone near a HR office, if they don't know how the business works' ‘Assessment centres and development centres are still the closest match you will get to a real-world event' 'Sometimes you have those crossroad moments where you have to make that call' ‘I had a real challenge getting Siemens to buy into diversity and inclusion' ‘Unconscious bias training is like one of those wearable devices you put on your wrist' ‘It's so important to maintain your perspective, even in the heat of the moment' Valuable Resources Join the HR Uprising LinkedIn Group Host of The HR Uprising Podcast, Lucinda Carney, is also the founder and CEO of Actus Software, where you can find additional free HR Resources: https://actus.co.uk/free-performance-management-resources/   ABOUT THE HOST   Dan Simpson began his career at Sainsbury's, having been talent-spotted by the HR Director and invited onto the graduate programme. Whilst at Sainsbury's, Dan worked as a graduate trainee manager, executive assistant to a senior Director as well as the Personnel and Training Manager of two stores. Consequently, Dan left Sainsbury's to join Siemens in their UK corporate HR talent management team. He became the Head of HR for Siemens Wind Power in the UK and then moved back into a corporate role to become the Head of Talent for the UK and Northwest Europe. Following this assignment, he was appointed as the Head of People & Leadership across Europe and served as a member of the Siemens Global Talent Expert team. Certainly, he is passionate about diversity and inclusion, leading on this for Siemens in the UK and globally throughout his career. In 2020, Dan will join the new Siemens Energy company as it prepares to be listed as a separate company in the autumn. He will jointly lead the global expert team for Organisational Development, focusing on building an enterprise succession and diversity concept. There's a bit in the podcast with Paul Hawksbee when he talks about how much previous knowledge you have to assume in the reader for a joke to work. This is a point that many people get wrong and it ruins everything. Hawksbee's mantra came from his days in magazines, when he created 90 Minutes, back in the days before Italia '90. There were jokes and cultural references in the mag that talked directly to the small group of people who read them and go them. Once you water these down, go for the bigger pool of readers, you bland the whole thing out. Hawksbee has written Bafta winning scripts for Harry Hill and worked with some of the best comics in the land. He knows how jokes work. In this episode, Gordon discusses the ying and yang of martial arts and the really cool people with Chris Jones fellow Martial Arts Podcaster. Chris shares his journey and they discuss where next for the Martial Arts Business. Listen in to find out more. KEY TAKEAWAYS Where did it all start for Chris Jones? I saw people going to Martial Arts classes and people on television I attended an MA demonstration and never looked back. A career as a stunt man I was captured by the performance element of Martial Arts and sent lots of videos out and it resulted in some fantastic opportunities. After my son was born my priorities changed and I didn’t want to be away from family Online for Martial Arts People had been asking me to do it for a long time. I just needed to get out of my own way I was worried about being judged but far more people have contacted me to say it has helped them. I decided I needed to have a video record of everything I could do, so it’s there forever. The only thing that stopped me was fear of being judged but you need to create assets for yourself and get it online for the future. The online videos were originally intended to help people see how they could do things if they had experienced an injury. It’s now developed into a starting point for people. Where do you think Martial Arts worldwide is going? It’s at a turning point, the internet is a great thing and has made things much more transparent in the industry. There is something out there for everybody so it’s just about positive growth. What does martial arts look like in 10 years? People can be scared by the terms professionalism and customer service, sometimes people feel you’re losing the essence of your art. Within the next ten years schools need to embrace the same approaches as other industries. BEST MOMENTS ‘The best people earn the least’ ‘It’s all starting to come together’ ‘I saw myself as the karate kid’ 'I was making videos of myself and sending them off' ‘Either to enjoy it or to learn from it’ ‘People have got this hunger for it’ 'Good opportunity for Martial Arts' ‘This is how I’ve changed to be able to do the things I want to do’ ‘People can research things more’ 'Sometimes although our motives are good it can create negativity’ 'We need to be that positive beacon of awesomeness' VALUABLE RESOURCES http://www.mabusinessmastery.com/ www.facebook.com/onlinekicking.co.uk/ https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/kick-back-with-chris-martial-arts-podcast/id1393047361?mt=2 ABOUT THE HOST Gordon Burcham is the bestselling author, 3 x World martial arts champion and award-winning Martial arts school owner. Last time Dan Feldman of NBC Sports' Pro Basketball Talk joined the podcast, he detailed the Pistons' inconsistency. Again, a season later, Feldman breaks down the team's streakiness and many other salient issues, including Stan Van Gundy's unique brand of leadership, Reggie Jackson's improving play, and why star center Andre Drummond can, at times, be so frustrating to watch. Here are some excerpts to get your engine revving:1:50-1:58: During the recent 3-9 skid: “The entire difference almost was defensively. They went from defending like, give or take, the best team in the league to defending like the worst team in the league.”7:55-8:27: “One thing that is helping [Tobias Harris] is that when you start the game, the Pistons want to get touches for Reggie Jackson. They want to get Marcus Morris involved. They’re running more plays for KCP. They’re running more plays for Andre Drummond. They’ve got to get all these guys involved… When [Tobias Harris] comes off the bench, it’s his turn to get involved. There’s no ambiguity of, ‘Hey is it my turn or is it somebody else’s turn?’ When he comes in, it’s his turn, he can get going and get into a rhythm. He's a talented player and a good scorer and when he's the focal point, that's something that works for him.”15:44-16:22: Regarding Drummond's defensive lapses: “Some of it's just getting lost, still being young, still learning his way, but some of it’s aggressiveness. You look at his shot blocking numbers, those should be higher. He’s just not always competing on that end… that’s one of the drawbacks with him; there are worse drawbacks. If you have Andre Drummond, you take the good and bad. He's the best player the Pistons have had in a long time, probably since Chauncey Billups. You’re happy to have him, but you have to work through these effort things and get him to compete more, especially on the defensive end more consistently, and to be smarter on that end. It's a work in progress.”18:50-19:22: "A lot of times… it doesn't really matter whether [Drummond] is in a good spot or not, they just sort of cherry pick, 'This will be a Drummond possession.' So if he's not in good position, he's going to force up the shot. He's not that good of a passer, that's something he needs to work on. [They need to] just make it more part of the offensive flow, rather than 'Sometimes we're going to run our offense, sometimes we're going to force-feed Drummond.' Those things need to find a balance and work better together. It's a work in progress."19:53-20:25: "I think it's something that's driving Stan Van Gundy nuts, how they haven't crashed the glass as hard as he wants them to, especially the non-Drummond players. They all rebound better when Drummond is out of the game. When Drummond's in, they're often waiting for Drummond to get the rebound, every rebound, and he obviously can't get them all. That said, at least the Pistons are doing something productive out of their offensive rebounding dip; they've been very good in fastbreak defense and not allowing fastbreak points."23:19-23:57: "The Pistons want to develop [Stanley Johnson], they want to get him minutes, they want him to be part of the rotation, but he’s got to earn it at least a little bit and for so much of the season, he wasn’t. Offensively, he would go through two different phases. He’d either force it and miss a lot of shots and turn the ball over, or he'd be way too passive and completely disappear. He never found the middle ground and didn’t find much coming naturally to him. Defensively, for the most part, the effort was good, but it was just really reckless. He didn't really know where he was going and was running arou...Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Martin Lesch is a husband, musician, songwriter, phenomenal pianist, and teacher, in addition to being fully committed to preserving the art and culture of jazz music. There are a lot of people who love jazz music and kind of idolize the life of the creative artist/ musician, so I feel that his willingness to be open and vulnerable about both the joys and struggles on his path will be extremely insightful. During this conversation we discuss creating, as a legacy of caring about community. We delve into tough subjects like the creative process, addiction, dealing with death and questioning everything. He also discusses his decision to create a new CD Journey through Jazz and to sell it on iTunes. Martin has always had an interest in music. He tells stories of playing the piano from before he was old enough for lessons (starting around 4 years old), simply making up his own melodies and asking his mother what she thought of them. He began taking lessons at 5 and had both good and bad teachers until his tween years, when he finally found a great teacher. That teacher was a stand out because he did two things: asked Martin what kind of music he liked (and let him play that), as well as "taught him music theory from the get-go." Parallel to his childhood interest in music and the arts, he describes growing up in New York City with a family that had some very interesting theological metamorphoses. He describes how his thought patterns changed and were shaped with deep conversations with family and extended family members. Martin grew up playing music and went through  Berklee music school. He was writing, performing and constantly on the road. He had the opportunity to perform with exemplary musicians from all around the world. He spent an extensive time in China, and Europe, as well as touring all over the United States. His greatest desire was"[He] just wanted to create." During that time his meditation practice grew, as did the depth of his commitment to Buddhism. We discuss how "creativity develops in the quiet, not in the noise." Music is definitely another language and form of expression. Jazz solos are like improvisational stories. 'Sometimes you get home at the end of a night performing and you feel like you didn't finish saying everything that you wanted to say..." explains Martin. He then sits down on his piano at home and plays a bit more until he has finished "his story" for the night.   Martin talks about the Jazz tradition of helping younger players to become accepted into the Jazz community, as well as offering them the experience that they need to fully step into the world of improvisational music. We discuss how Martin extended that invitation to my son Hani'el Mastriani-Levi, after hearing a brief video of him warming up for a sax lesson, in a parking lot.     Hani’el in the Parking lot: https://youtu.be/8XSRPIHjl3Q Hani’el’s Debut at Jazz corner link: https://youtu.be/Mn_SNfv7UWo Martin is vulnerable in discussing the risks of creative to show up fully and the bravery necessary.  "Being brave is attractive." "The best art is created in an ego-less space." " Jazz enables your art to be a community activity." He also openly discusses how substance abuse is a huge deterrent to artistic development and progress. We speak about how prevalent it is in the world of art/music and how quickly it can lead you down the wrong path. Martin spent years writing for others and now he says, "I'm writing every night...just that I'm doing it live on stage." The legacy that he desires to create is not just as a musician, rather as a compassionate person who helped to bring empathy amongst others  in the community. A Simple Change that Martin recommends is: Practice Meditation...every day in some way...to create compassion & understanding in all that you do. Martin Sexton, an upstate New Yorker, left home with seventy-five bucks and a Stratocaster to chase his musical dreams singing in the streets of Harvard Square in Cambridge, Massachusetts, gradually and independently working his way to the premier venues of North America inspiring fans and musicians along the way. The activity and touring behind his records laid the foundation for the career he enjoys today, headlining everywhere from The Filmore to Carnegie Hall. Since launching his own label, Kitchen Table Records (KTR), the fiercely independent Sexton has infiltrated many musical worlds, performing at concerts, ranging from pop (collaborating with John Mayer) to the Jam scene to classic rock (collaborating with Peter Frampton); from the Newport Folk Fest to Bonnaroo to New Orleans Jazz Fest to now shows around the world. Regardless of his reputation as a musician's musician, Sexton can't keep Hollywood away. His songs can be heard in feature films and television including Showtime's 'Masters of Sex' and 'Brotherhood,' NBC's 'Scrubs' and 'Parenthood,' and the IFC film 'Lucky Them.'Sometimes, an artist is in charge, but Sexton's case, the songs on his 2015 album, 'Mixtape of the Open Road,' were clearly driving the bus. As much as he wanted to create a theme record (like bluegrass or '70s rock), the songs in his collection each represent its own place in space and time. The resulting collection gathers together favorites that make for a memorable listening experience. While out on his massive roadtrip in support of the album, Sexton stopped by Beehive Studios in Saranac Lake, New York, to lay down some live cuts from his mixtape " along with exclusive video performances.

Jimmy Herring circa 1994In the spring of 1994 the Grateful Dead were still touring, I got married and began my graduate studies at DePaul University. Working full-time in the printing and publications department of my alma mater and going to school full time left me with little time for live music or much of a social life. But in the summer of 1994, all I had to do was work full time... and take some of my precious earned vacation time to see some music. After 25 years of actively seeking out live musical experiences, the summer of 1994 stands out as a highlight. In particular, the ten day period of July 14 - 24, 1994 stands out as one of the most ambitious musical experiences of my life.Thursday 7/14/94 - work 9 - 5, Widespread Panic, The Vic (Aquarium Rescue Unit opened)Friday 7/15/94 - work 9 - 5Saturday 7/16/94 drive 5.5 hours to Ames, IA -  Widespread Panic, People's Bar and GrillSunday 7/17/94 - drive back to ChicagoMonday 7/18/94 - work 9 - 5, 3 hour drive to the Riverbend Campground outside of Noblesville, IN.Tuesday 7/19/94 - Grateful Dead, Deer Creek AmpitheatreWednesday 7/20/94 - Grateful Dead, Deer Creek AmpitheatreThursday 7/21/94 - Grateful Dead, Deer Creek AmpitheatreFriday 7/22/94 - drive back to Chicago, celebrate birthday at Martyrs'Saturday 7/23/94 - Grateful Dead, Soldier Field, ChicagoSunday 7/24/94 - Grateful Dead, Soldier Field, Chicago5 Dead shows, 2 Panic shows and 3 full days of work in 11 days. But you are here to hear about Widespread Panic. That July 14th show at the Vic was originally scheduled for a larger venue, the newly opened Skyline Stage on Navy pier. But Peter Frampton used his own PA a couple of weeks earlier which led to the venue not allowing Widespread to use their PA....  I'll add that this change in venue happened after the band and crew had arrived in the early morning of July 14 to set the stage.Several dozen people were turned away at the door of the Vic because of overcrowding and the air conditioning failed before the band even hit the stage. The Aquarium Rescue Unit (without Col. Bruce but with Kofi Burbridge on keys and flute and Paul Henson on vocals) opened for Panic. I wonder if Jimmy Herring ever had a sense of deja vu when sharing the stage with  Widespread Panic? Or perhaps being in the Aquarium Rescue Unit was like LIVING in deja vu!I featured the final two songs and the encore of Panic's one set show back in PaniCast #4....PaniCast #4 - Sweating to July 14, 1994 The Vic Theatre, Chicago. This week I bring you the opening of the first set up through the drum break in Papa's Home.I've also added a couple of great radio studio performances from 1993 and some silly interviews...July 14, 1994The Vic TheatreChicago, IL(set one opener)Heroes >Weight of the World,PilgrimsPorch SongMay 3, 1993KTCZ 97.1 StudiosMinneapolis, MNInterviewWonderingJuly 14, 1994 continuesLittle Kin,It Ain't No Use >Travelin' LightMay 10, 1993WDET 101.9 FMDetroit, MIInterviewHenry Parsons DiedJuly 14, 1994 continuesJunior,Stop-Go >Papa's HomeJuly 14, 1994 Aquarium Rescue Unit (opening for Widespread Panic)Vic TheatreChicago, ILFixin' to Die(calling out to 'Garrie' during the song... same Garrie?)Jimmy Herring on guitarOteil Burbridge on bass/vocalsApartment Q258 on drumsKofi Burbridge on keys/flutePaul Henson on vocalsLISTENER'S GUIDE:7/14/94Listen how Weight of the World starts with Dave melodically driving the song forward until Mikey takes control and leads into the third verse. This allows DAS to switch to a percussive slap bass technique, nearly teasing 'We Want the Funk....' at one point. The Pilgrims intro is so mellow, almost like they backing into the song. Feeling confident and conversational in the way they are playing....  - and so we listen, and if it's real good, and we shake. And then Houser takes a solo and the heat is on!Check out the jam that begins about 5 and a half minutes into Ain't No Use.... soaring, triumphant, lovely. And again around the 5 and a half minute mark in Papa's Home a graceful and confident jam. Houser's leads are reminiscent of a yet-to-be-written Surprise Valley.5/3/93 and 5/10/93Being asked by radio DJs about being from Athens and REM must've gotten old and you can't blame JB Jack the Jester for trying to have a little fun with them in the process. I just love JB talking about Sunny in the 5/10 interview; 'Sometimes he rubs them. Sometimes he shakes them.'7/14/94 ARUThe band calls out for "Gary" during Fixin' to Die.... leaving me wondering if they were somehow calling out to Garrie Vereen....SOURCE INFO:7/14/94Source: SBD > DAT @ 48.0khz > Analog(master)Transfer: Analog(master) > Tascam DA-45HR @ 44.1khz > Audiophile 24/96 USB > Cool Edit 2000 > CDwave > FLAC(level 6)Converted and edited by D.P. Married couple America Ferrara and Ryan Piers Williams star in X/Y premiering at The Tribeca Film Festival. The film bravely depicts sex scenes shot so tastefully you don't even see a butt cheek or a breast. Ryan tells host Robin Milling he had to convince his own mother he wasn't making a o, but rather implying the visuals for a stronger impact. America says her sister came away with the impact of the journey far more than, 'I can't believe I had to watch my sister and her husband make love!' Putting themselves out there on the big screen as a married couple, Ryan wanted to make sure the scenes were shot in a tasteful way that got to the heart of the emotion. America adds, 'Sometimes a hand touching a curve on your back is the most intimate thing you can experience. Of course as an actor I appreciated that Ryan didn't get gratuitous with the sex!' And being directed by your husband making out with Common in a bathroom stall can be a little awkward but professionalism always came first. Ryan says it's intense directing your wife in a sex scene with someone and being in a sex scene yourself but it was his job to make everyone feel comfortable to get the best results. Ryan and America who make their home in New York took advantage of their daily Bikram yoga and Soul Cycle spin class routines for the film as well as using those locations where they work out. Ryan also wants to remind New Yorkers that Far Rockaway is still recovering from Hurricane Sandy, using those beaches for the surfing scenes. They discuss the trajectory of their relationship from dating, engagement to marriage and how that has impacted their work together, telling Robin their mutual respect and championing of each other creatively and pushing each other's boundaries is what makes the balance work.

This week Libby Purves is joined by Gareth Malone, Stella Duffy, Reginald D Hunter and Jessica Douglas-Home. Choirmaster Gareth Malone returns with the fourth series of the RTS and BAFTA award-winning series. This time he goes to Devon, to Chivenor barracks, to work with the forces community from the time the battalion is deployed to their homecoming. His task is to work for six months with the wives - and try to give them a voice and to unite them - and the base - through the power of song. The Choir: Military Voices is on BBC Two. Stella Duffy is the novelist and playwright. She is directing 'TaniwhaThames', a new play about home and belonging, the inspiration coming from her two most beloved places - London and New Zealand. She was born in London but moved with her family to a small town in New Zealand when she was five. TaniwhaThames, written and devised by the theatre company, Shaky Isles, is at Ovalhouse Theatre, South London. Reginald D. Hunter is the American born, stand-up comedian, known on the UK comedy circuit as one of its most distinctive and controversal performers, often dealing with the issues of race which he feels is important. His DVD, Reginald D Hunter LIVE has just been released and he is currently on tour with 'Sometimes even the devil tells the truth'. Jessica Douglas-Home's 23 year old grandmother, Lilah Wingfield travelled to India in 1911 for the great Delhi Durbar, when George V had himself crowned Emperor of India with enormous pomp. Her book, 'A Glimpse of Empire', based on diaries and photographs of her grandmothers', is published to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the Durbar. There are also two exhibitions of Lilah's photographs in Dehli and at Indar Pasricha Fine Arts in Connaught Street, London W1. A Glimpse of Empire is published by Michael Russell. Producer: Lucinda Montefiore.
