Raised at the bottom of the world, Sam Cullen is on his way up. The Invercargill-born musician is rising in the music world, having already performed on the main stage at Rhythm & Vines, as well as playing on some of the coolest stages around the country. He's been working quietly behind the scenes on his self-titled debut album, which is set to release soon. Some of the songs on the album, he revealed to Jack Tame, are about five or six years old. “It's kind of been less of a, I'm going to sit down and write an album,” Cullen said. “But the last five years of my life, these are like, the best songs I've written and haven't released yet.” Only being 25 years old, this means the songs were written throughout the early days of his adulthood – resulting in themes of coming of age and entering adulthood weaving throughout the album. “I'm pretty proud of it and excited to have it out.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Jesse Hartman in conversation with David Eastaugh www.facebook.com/laptoptheband http://laptoptheband.bandcamp.com www.laptoptheband.com Laptop is the pioneering electro-pop project from Jesse Hartman — the sharp-witted New York songwriter who first made waves as a teenage guitarist/keyboardist on Richard Hell's 1990 legendary tour of Japan, then again in the '90s as the front man of indie rock duo Sammy (with guitarist Luke Wood, Geffen/Fire Records). After Sammy's brief but buzzy run (two albums: Debut Album on Sonic Youth's Smells Like Records/Fire Records in the UK and Tales of Great Neck Glory on Geffen/Fire), Hartman shifted gears, re-emerging in 1997 under the name Laptop with a sound that was years ahead of its time: sarcastic synth-funk, deadpan vocals, and emotionally raw themes filtered through cold drum machines and warm analog nostalgia.

In this episode of Talk of Fame, Kylie Montigney talks with Krystal King! At three years old, Krystal caught a snippet of Alan Jackson on the radio...and the rest is history. Country music was in her bones. She followed this love of music to college where she studied Music Therapy at Appalachian State University (home of Eric Church & Luke Combs) and worked as a psychiatric music therapist. While she loved being able to use music to help others, Krystal says that country music "haunted" her and she knew she had to follow that passion, bringing her to Nashville. Krystal's sound has been described as 90's country with a bit of folk, blues, soul, and rock. Krystal combines early influences of artists such as Alan Jackson, Dixie Chicks, Lee Ann Womack, & Willie Nelson with modern likes of Eric Church, Chris Stapleton, & Ashley McBryde. When it comes to songwriting, Krystal says "Loretta Lynn is my alter ego." Krystal has released 9 original singles -6 of which were produced by Mike Loudermilk (previously producing and playing guitar for Crystal Gayle). Over the next year, She will be releasing her self produced, Debut Album "Pretty Poison" (CD Available Now). The first single from the project, "Red Wine & White Lies" has over 15K streams on Spotify and "Mind Your Own Backyard," a quirky murder song from the album, has 27K music video views and is featured on the Heartland Network and CountryLine. Krystal has had the honor of performing iconic stages including the Bluebird Cafe, The Listening Room Cafe and Tootsies Orchid Lounge in Nashville and tours nationally visiting NC, TN, WI, AL, AZ, MS, & FL, & Texas. Additionally Krystal has played several festivals with headliners including Walker Hayes (WestHaven PorchFest), Craig Morgan (Keys To Country), Kristian Bush (Meeting of the Minds) and opened for Beth Neilson Chapman (writer of "This Kiss" by Faith Hill.). Lew stops by the show to discuss, finding his voice, moving across country to pursue his dream, his father's suicide, his debut album Fool's Gold and more.******“'No Room In Hell' is a rose-tinted daydream and an embodiment of the whole record,” says genre-defying soul artist Lew Apollo about his luminous new single. The first glimpse of his highly anticipated debut album Fool's Gold, which is out August 8, 2025, the track is a masterclass in emotional duality, pairing honeyed production with themes of longing and illusion and setting the tone for a record that is equal parts cinematic and soul-baring. “‘No Room In Hell' came to me in about 45 minutes,” he explains. “I was in a good mood, riding high on discovering the band Jungle, and everything just clicked—the beat, the melody, the lyrics. It captures the exact energy of the record: shiny on the outside, but full of deeper questions underneath.”A Minnesota native now rooted in Austin, Texas, Lew Apollo has built a name as a bold new voice in modern soul—drawing comparisons to Hozier, Leon Bridges, and Labrinth, yet offering something entirely his own. Following the breakout success of his 2023 EP JUNGLE—which amassed over 150,000 streams in just two months—Lew's next chapter unfolds in Fool's Gold, a deeply personal exploration of mental health, grief, love, and the blurred lines between fantasy and reality. In 2022, Lew experienced a life-altering loss when his father died by suicide. The grief was shattering—but also galvanizing. His dad had always been the one cheering him on, the one sitting by the stairs to say his guitar sounded amazing, even when Lew couldn't believe it himself. In the months that followed, Lew began writing with even greater urgency and vulnerability. His music became not just a creative outlet, but a space to grieve, honor, and connect. He now writes openly about mental health, isolation, and anxiety—not as a solution, but as a way to remind listeners that they aren't alone.*******If you would like to contact the show about being a guest, please email us at Dauna@bettertopodcast.comUpcoming guests can be found: https://dmneedom.com/upcoming-guest Follow us on Social MediaInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/author_d.m.needom/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedomIntro and Outro music compliments of Fast Suzi©2025 Better To...Podcast with D. “Careful back there…” Generally speaking, an artist's DEBUT ALBUM will often be quite good, while their SOPHOMORE ALBUM, in contrast, will often be far more advanced, sophisticated, and light years better than the first, in terms of song writing and overall production. While this is more often than not the rule, there are some notable exceptions. As with asking a parent with 2 kids “which one do you love more?”, sometimes the answer is obvious, and other times it's “not even close”. And in the instances where dissenting opinions clashed, the resulting debate may have impacted the feelings of others “forevermore”. It's time to “go get your mom” and bear witness to some “Gonz Bozonders” as we discuss the blockbuster movie magic behind “Shark Week” and prepare to “show no Morrissey” with regard to “butt scissoring” when you JOIN US as we try to determine whether various metal artist's second albums are BETTER OR WORSE than their first. Saya Gray might have just released her debut album earlier this year, but it's far from her first foray into music. She's been gigging since she was a teen, performing alongside much older musicians at Toronto jazz clubs where she had to use a fake ID to get in. Eventually, she started touring with the likes of Daniel Caesar and Willow Smith. Now, her debut album, “Saya,” has just been shortlisted for the 2025 Polaris Prize. Back in February, Saya sat down with Tom Power to tell us what it's like to learn to play music before learning to speak, what making experimental music means to her, and where she's going next in her music career.
