Do you want to know what it takes to create something truly magical from absolutely nothing? Building a remarkable business from the ground up requires focusing on being better than what is already out there. But here is the key: you can't just be slightly better than your competition. You need to go all in on being 10 times better than what is currently already being done. This is the mindset that Kevin Gibbon operates from and it has served him very well.Sometimes the misplaced step offers the most profound and lasting insight. Innately entrepreneurial, Airhouse CEO and Co-Founder Kevin Gibbon got his start in tech developing software for major aerospace players like Boeing and Raytheon. After a few years, he set out to carve his own path, building Shyp, attracting $62.1M in funding, and landing on Fast Company's 50 Most Innovative Companies list. Unfortunately, Shyp was a bright star that ultimately burned out, but Kevin walked away from the experience equipped with reams of priceless insight. At Airhouse, he's applying that insight to revolutionize the way DTC e-commerce brands scale logistics. In this episode of the How'd It Happen Podcast, Kevin is sharing how he stayed so optimistic and confident while his first business Shyp, was about to close down. He took the priceless lessons that he learned from building a running Shyp, to go on and build the very successful company, Airhouse, and has been introduced as the next Jeff Bezos. What Kevin learned is that many entrepreneurs focus on the wrong things, such as building a great service or product, but where we need to focus is on our ideal customer. What do they need? How can we make their lives easier? Focus there, truly understand that problem, figure out how to solve it, and your chances of success will be much higher. How to be efficient in e-commerce logistics Failure can be a painful experience; it's crucial to embrace it as a valuable learning experience and use those lessons to become a better entrepreneur. Venture capitalists often appreciate entrepreneurs who have experienced failure because it shows their ability to adapt and improve their strategies. Ultimately, the ability to learn from failure separates successful entrepreneurs from the rest. Airhouse CEO and Co-Founder Kevin Gibbon started in tech, developing software for significant aerospace players like Boeing and Raytheon. After a few years, he set out to carve his own path, building Shyp, attracting $62.1M in funding, and landing on Fast Company's 50 Most Innovative Companies list. Unfortunately, Shyp was a bright star that ultimately burned out. Still, Kevin walked away from the experience equipped with priceless insight. At Airhouse, he's applying that insight to revolutionize how DTC e-commerce brands scale logistics. Key Takeaways: Venture capitalists are looking for outliers and want to see asymmetric outcomes Learning from failure and taking the lessons learned to improve on them can increase the chances of success in future ventures Product-market fit is crucial, and it's essential to make sure you have it before hiring senior executives Feedback cycles can be long, but patience is necessary for product market fit. Reproducing product-market fit requires understanding customer needs and iterating on the product Keep the team small and raise as little venture capital as possible until you have a product-market fit Avoid hiring senior executives who are risk-averse All this and more, on this week's episode of Beyond 7 Figures. Stay tuned next week when we talk about revolutionizing productivity with Jere Simpson. So, don't forget to subscribe to the show to get that episode as soon it gets released. Until then, be profitable. Links: https://www.airhouse.io/ https://secondtimefounders.com/podcast-1
The silo effect or silo mentality in organizations, when one group's specialization walls then off from everyone else is often viewed as a consequence of growth. But todays guest, Sarah Siwak Co-Founder and Chief Revenue Officer at Airhouse, says that the silo effect shuts out more than it shuts in and hurts the bottom line. And in this insightful interview she share more about what those costs actually are. What You'll Discover About the Silo Effect:* How the silo effect reduces productivity* Why the silo effect slows the scaling of your business* How cross-functional teams combat the silo effect* How to incentivize better communication to limit the silo effect* And MUCH more.Guest: Sarah SiwakSarah Siwak is proof that staying in one lane is rarely the best option. After obtaining her B.A. in Russian, she stepped into a marketing and web production role at an early-stage tech startup in Tokyo. Armed with a new-found love for both marketing and tech, Sarah went on to lead marketing initiatives for several large, innovative players in the industry like Zenefits, Heap, and Shyp. Now, as the Co-Founder and Chief Revenue Officer at Airhouse, she's applying lessons learned from her less-than-traditional path to power logistics solutions for emerging direct-to-consumer e-commerce brands. The single-minded pursuit of narrow expertise has its perks. But so does intellectual omnivory. When it comes to navigating dynamic business landscapes, the broader your palate, the better your chances to survive and thrive. That kind of intellectual omnivory — a boundless appetite to learn, coupled with a capacity to see the hidden threads among disparate ideas — comes naturally to Sarah Siwak. As Chief Revenue Officer and Co-Founder of direct-to-consumer e-commerce logistics solution Airhouse, Sarah is living proof that staying in one lane is rarely the best option. After obtaining her B.A. in Russian, she stepped into a marketing and web production role at an early-stage tech startup in Tokyo. Kevin Gibbon is the CEO and cofounder of Airhouse, an end-to-end operations and logistics platform for modern e-commerce companies. Airhouse works with companies to make distribution of their consumer goods products easy. They use a platform that is an all-in-one, cloud-based warehouse that maintains itself, helping direct-to-consumer companies get orders from factory to front-door. This company is informed by Kevin's previous experience founding Shyp, a verticalized startup tackling the same problem. He raised over $60 million for the company, but it eventually shut down. In this episode, Aaron and Kevin talk about what he learned from Shyp's failure, the challenges of operating a good distribution center, and the opportunity for DTC brands to expand internationally. Kevin Gibbon's Challenge: Go set a scary goal and act on it. Today's episode is with the brilliant, Kevin Gibbon. Kevin is the Founder and CEO of Airhouse. He was previously the Founder and CEO of Shyp. Kevin opens up candidly about his experience in Silicon Valley and explains what it was like moving to the USA to pursue his dream of owning his own company. James and Kevin, speak about the Silicon Valley Network and why it is the hub for startups. They also dive deep into why investors are more likely to invest in a second time failed founder rather than a brand new founder just starting their company. On this very first episode of First Person, I talk to Sarah Siwak, co-founder of Airhouse, an e-commerce operations platform that helps businesses get goods from factory to front door. We cover a lot of ground on this episode, from Sarah's autodidact tendencies to what she learned about running a business while working in the startup space at companies like Gengo, Zenefits, Heap and Shyp. We also dig into why she believes video games have the potential to make you a better problem solver and of course, what it's like launching a company in the middle of a pandemic.
