But, after watching the American version with his son, he had a major revelation. High Society WAS a show. The year was 1995, and women all over New York City were winning publishing companies in divorce settlements. Such was the case with Dorothy "Dott" Emerson, played by Mary McDonnell. She published the trashy yet highly successful romance novels penned by her best friend Ellie Walker, played by Jean Smart. The show is pretty much just about the daily comings and goings of Dott and Ellie as they live it up as outrageously as possible amongst New York's high society scene. What did Elizabeth Taylor have to do with all of it, and what exactly was Liz Night on CBS?! Brynn, Aaron and Barry put on their best black tie and jewellery, pop some champagne, and try to figure out why this show didn't get invited to any more parties. “Gay” (November 20, 2008) The reviews would have you believe that NBC's attempt at an American redo of Kath & Kim was without merit and appealing to no one. We're not so sure, and the fact that its one season on air came around the same time franchises like Real Housewives and RuPaul's Drag Race were revving up means that there actually an audience for two women who dress trashy but who think they're hot stuff and whose banter vacillates between friendly and bitchy. It's not as successful as the Australian source material was, but given a chance to come into its own, could Kath & Kim U.S. grown like the American version of The Office did? John Gianelli –Started Swift Engineering. as well as Fast Forward Components. building, set up and designing Championship Formula Ford Race Cars, turning your passion into a profession! now Retired serves as President of Meals on Wheels of Salinas Valley. John and his wife have been coming to me since the early days in Salinas. I had such a great time talking to John. His passion for racing cars started at such a young age. His father had a career in aviation which required some travelling. Although born in Texas the family returned to California and settled in Southern California. Growing up in the San Fernando Valley, the car culture/race culture was thick. His father one day brought home a go-cart, and he started racing. On John's 21st birthday, his father bought him racing classes at the Willow Springs Raceway. With slick tires introduced, John was priced out of racing but began building and importing race cars. John teamed up with people who wanted to build an American Version of what they were importing from England and started Swift Racecars. Their first built Formula Ford built won many national championships . A job offer in Laguna Seca relocated the two to Monterey County. Still involved in racing at the time, he was involved in founding Fast Forward components. Aviation re-entered his life and flew planes as a hobby for over 20 years. He flew with his father twice in his life and was happy to return to aviation. Currently in his eighth year of retirement, he is the current President of Meals on Wheels of Salinas Valley. John started off delivering, then preparation and packaging for Meals on Wheels. I hope you enjoy this podcast!Originally recorded September 9, 2022

Not all Data Scientists wear lab coats to work. Intapp's Jennifer Roberts wears a cape! On the latest episode of The Geek in Review, Marlene and Greg dive into the wonderfully geeky world of data science and its application within law firms and the legal industry. Jennifer Roberts, Manager, Strategic Research at Intapp, discusses exactly what it means to be a data scientist, and why law firms are leveraging them to help run their legal operations. When it comes to "the business of law," Roberts says this is where the results of data science steps in and shows its value. Data science can help answer questions like, "how can we predict the price of legal services?" "How can we predict the scope of a matter?" "How can we help with legal project management?" And even "how can we predict what a client's needs are?" Or, "what will these clients buy from us in the future?" Data science and analytics help uncover the facts that not all lawyers and not all legal matters are totally unique. Roberts also helps us answer those naysayers who claim that they do not have enough data, or that they have Filthy Data™. We finish our LegalWeek question of "how are you changing the legal industry" with our final four responses. This week we hear from: Michael Boggia - Lookup Damian Jeal - Hubshare Kevin O'Keefe - LexBlog Martin Goulet - Wolters Kluwer Information Inspirations For anyone following the happenings (and large fines resulting from) the EU's GDPR, Marlene thinks perhaps this is something that may make its way across the pond. In a recent Corporate Counsel magazine article entitled, "Cisco's Chief Legal Officer Expresses Support for American Version of GDPR" (subscription needed), Mark Chandler of Cisco supports the need for more regulation on privacy. Greg talks with Emily Feltren of the American Association of Law Libraries, about recent legislation submitted that might finally move PACER from behind a paywall. Marlene's second information inspiration is about "Why People Still Don't Buy Groceries Online." Americans buy almost everything online these days, so why hasn't online grocery shopping taken off? Is this one of the last "tactile" experiences that we are holding on to, or have we just not had the "aha!" moment yet with online grocery shopping experiences? The final information inspirations talks about what it really means to have access to justice. In the New York Times opinion piece, "Everyone Needs Legal Help. That Doesn't Mean Everyone Needs a Lawyer," . Look for us at the ARK Library Conference in NYC this week. Gooood Morning! We review the media cycle from the previous 2 weeks, pre-Memorial Day weekend, and discuss the second season of the hit FX series Atlanta, the Black content creator era which we currently live in, Jordan’s recent trip to New Orleans, and his subsequent binge-watch of HBO’s The Pacific. After the break we speak with comedian Tim Barnes who embellished us to watch the feminist version of the “This Is America” music video. He also touches upon the Black content creator movement and the somewhat unfair criticism that some folks have had of Childish Gambino’s “wokeness” (insert vomit emoji). Our guests today have been close friends since the middle of the 80's, when due to doing what most mums do, they met whilst ferrying their kids to school and back. And that simple connection lead them on an entrepreneurial journey that perhaps they wouldn't have imagined as possible at the very beginning. Starting in the garage looking at money making ideas and projects, these two mums started researching home remedies, studied herbal properties and used their families as guinea pigs for numerous concoctions. Over the years, they have acquired a file filled with business cards they created for one idea after another. They have run a newspaper, produced original Murder Mystery Dinner events, operated an advertising and PR firm and generally sizzled with endless ideas. And I took this phrase directly from their website as I loved it, had never heard it before, but it seems so apt for a show like this. "Even a blind pig eventually finds an acorn." And due to the ever expanding production line of grandchildren they decided they wanted to find candy, or sweets as we call them in the UK, that they would be happy with their loved ones eating. And it seems that so many people wanted the same thing, and that blind pig had found its acorn. And that pig started running, and running it was quite an excited pig it seems, and now these two amazing ladies have a company called Ice Chips Candy, which led to them being contestants on the American Version of the UK Show "Dragons Den" which is called "Shark Tank". So did it work for them? Did they gain the investment that they sought? Are they pleased that they tried so many things on their way to finding their thing in life? Well lets find out as we discuss Ice Chips Candy, the Shark Tank, and of course joining up dots with the amazing powerhouse couple that are...Bev Vines-Haines and Charlotte Clary
In the midst a culture strongly influenced by secularization, self-indulgence, and the rise of philosophical pluralism, we are often tempted to opt for an "American" Version of the Gospel-one that is more "domesticated." The key theme of Philippians is "Putting the Gospel First."
