Do you dread parallel parking? Are you proud of your skill? Are you thrilled you have parking assist on your new car? There are lots of tips and tricks to parallel parking.1. Make sure you have 1 and a half car lengths space to park.2. When you’re alongside the front car – look over your shoulder to see the front parked car’s bumper in your back side window – or your back bumpers are even or your side mirrors are even - if you and the front parked car are the same size vehicles3. Turn the wheel to the right and angle back looking into your left side mirror until you see the front/road side bumper of the rear parked car 4. Turn the wheel to the left to straighten out, and back straight in until your right side mirror covers your view of the front parked car’s left tail light.5. Turn the wheel to the left to get your car parallel to the curb using your right side mirror to site down the curb or edge of road.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l4LcfZeS4qwhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mpo6fcaWfC4Do you have parking assist? Fuel system cleaners, fuel injection cleaners, fuel stabilizers, and cooling system additives. Oh my!It was recently reported: Amid concerns over the dual-clutch automatic transmission in its Fiesta and Focus sedans and hatchbacks, Ford announced plans to extend warranty coverage on key hardware for a wide swath of owners. The so-called DPS6 transmission, offered on the Fiesta since the 2011 model year and Focus since the 2012 model year, has spawned widespread complaints of rough shifts and, sometimes, loss of power. The automaker will extend warranty coverage for specific transmission hardware on certain Focus and Fiesta vehicles by two years — now to seven years or 100,000 miles, versus the prior five years or 60,000 miles (for both, whichever comes first).https://www.cars.com/articles/ford-extends-warranty-on-more-focus-fiesta-transmissions-407553/You can find out if your car has a past recall by going to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration’s website: https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls and inputting your VIN number.Consumer Reports has a list of vehicles that have a record of much-worse-than-average overall reliability based on subscriber responses to their Annual Auto Survey. UPDATE: We've had some discussion concerning the tip on "Refuel in the morning". With underground storage of gas, maybe the outside temperature fluctuations don't change the volume of gas enough to make a difference. https://www.carbibles.com/improve-gas-mileage/Useful Tips to Improve Your Gas Mileage1. Stick to the motor oil recommended by your vehicle manufacturer. ... those are the oils your manufacturer has tested with your car for its peak performance.2. Keep your gas cap fully sealed. ... be mindful when replacing the cap so that oxygen doesn’t get in or the seal of the cap doesn’t degrade.3. Drive in the highest possible gear but without putting undue stress on your engine. . . for a manual. Automatics – keep it on overdrive4. Forget aftermarket solutions . . performance enhancing gizmos or technology make promises but don’t deliver or the effect is negligible.5. Utilize online resources to find the best deals on gas. Something like Gas Buddy or AAA; use Kroger fuel discounts, Wal-Mart giftcard discounts; T-Mobile and Shell have partnership.6. Refuel in the morning, not towards the end of the day . . . you can save a dollar of two because the gas is cooler and denser. When it expands, less gas makes up the same volume7. Plan your trip . . . combine errands. UPS plans their routes to only make right turns to be the most fuel efficient8. Choose your wheels carefully . . alloy wheels are lighter. If you upsize your wheels you can get better mileage but the wheels may weigh more.9. Use your car’s cruise control . . it helps to maintain constant speed and reduce your need to accelerate and brake10. Drive 55 when practical. It saves gas over higher speeds – you have to stop for gas going faster so you lose what time you tried to save going faster. You can find out if your car has a past recall by going to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration’s website: nhtsa.gov/recalls and inputting your VIN number.Consumer Reports has a list of 108 2007-16 models that have a record of much-worse-than-average overall reliability based on subscriber responses to their Annual Auto Survey. We've got some tips for getting the most miles per gallon of gas.Useful Tips to Improve Your Gas Mileage1. Take it easy on the pedal. ... the faster you go the greater the drag that your car will have to work against. The same is true when coming to a stop. Imagine there is an egg between your foot and the gas pedal to remind yourself to accelerate slowly and gently. When breaking allow time to just slow by not having your foot on the gas peddle. 2. Adhere to your vehicle's recommended fuel type. ... if you’re suppose to put regular fuel in the car do it. If you’re suppose to put premium fuel in – do that. 3. Watch the weight. ... unless you’re driving a cargo van, don’t carry cargo regularly, for no reason. 4. Reduce drag. ... roof racks, bike racks, and storage accessories on your car add weight and increase aerodynamic drag. They aren’t for everyday use. 5. Inflate those tires to the correct pressure. ... flatter tires have more contact with the road and take more fuel to propel. Also watch the tread pattern of the tires. 6. Avoid prolonged idling. Your engine consumes half a gallon to a gallon of fuel every hour. Don’t rev your engine while starting in the morning. Let it run for 20 seconds and you’re good to go. 7. Drive in the highest possible gear but without putting undue stress on your engine. . . for a manual. Automatics – keep it on overdrive8. Forget aftermarket solutions . . performance enhancing gizmo or technology make promises but don’t deliver or the effect is negligible.9. Utilize online resources to find the best deals on gas. Do not ever forget to replacing your air filter 12. Be sensible when using the air conditioning – is city traffic better to roll down the windows13. Keep your car tuned up14. Every year use something like CRC Intake Cleaner GDI – throttle body cleanerAnd here’s what’s in the news this week: Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee Returns to Netflix July 19 Jerry Seinfeld’s Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, the show in which he picks up a comedian and takes them to coffee in a sometimes perfect/sometimes combustible car, usually framed around his interpretation of their personality, will return with new episodes to its relatively new home at Netflix next month.Consumer Reports has a list of 108 2007-16 models that have a record of much-worse-than-average overall reliability based on subscriber responses to their Annual Auto Survey. How do you change a flat tire? What if you have roadside assistance?Roadside assistance is great if you have time to wait for them or if you can't change your own flat tire. FIND A SAFE LOCATIONAs soon as you realize you have a flat tire, do not abruptly brake or turn. Slowly reduce speed and scan your surroundings for a level, straight stretch of road with a wide shoulder. An empty parking lot would be an ideal place. Level ground is good because it will prevent your vehicle from rolling. Also, straight stretches of road are better than curves because oncoming traffic is more likely to see you.Never attempt to change your tire on a narrow shoulder near oncoming traffic. Keep moving (slowly) until you find a safer spot. While driving on a flat risks ruining your rim, replacing a rim is better than being hit by an inattentive driver.Make sure to consult your owner’s manual and review their specific steps on how to change a flat tire for your vehicle2. TURN ON YOUR HAZARD LIGHTSYour hazard lights or “flashers” will help other drivers see you on the side of the road. To avoid an accident, turn them on as soon as you realize you need to pull over.3. APPLY THE PARKING BRAKEOnce stopped, always use the parking brake when preparing to replace a flat tire. This will minimize the possibility of your vehicle rolling.4. APPLY WHEEL WEDGESWheel wedges go in front of or behind the tires to further ensure the vehicle doesn’t roll while you fix the flat tire. If you’re changing a rear tire, place these in front of the front tires. If your flat tire is at the front, put the wheel wedges behind the rear tires.Bricks or large stones will work just as well as “real” wheel wedges. Just be sure they’re large enough to stop the car from rolling.5. REMOVE THE HUBCAP OR WHEEL COVERIf your vehicle has a hubcap covering the lug nuts, it’s easier to remove the hubcap before lifting the vehicle with the jack. If your lug nuts are exposed, you can skip ahead to Step 6.Use the flat end of your lug wrench to remove the hubcap. This will work for most vehicles, but some hubcaps need a different tool to come off. Consult your owner’s manual for proper hubcap or wheel cover removal procedures.6. LOOSEN THE LUG NUTSUsing the lug wrench, turn the lug nuts counterclockwise until you break their resistance. You may have to use force, and that’s ok. Use your foot or all of your body weight if necessary.Loosen the lug nuts about ¼ to ½ of a turn, but don’t remove them completely yet. Save that for when it’s time to remove your tire/wheel from the vehicle.7. PLACE THE JACK UNDER THE VEHICLEThe right place for the jack is usually beneath the vehicle frame alongside the tire that’s flat. Many vehicle frames have molded plastic on the bottom with a cleared area of exposed metal specifically for the jack. To safely lift and avoid damage to the vehicle, follow the instructions for jack placement in your vehicle owner’s manual.8. RAISE THE VEHICLE WITH THE JACKTo prevent the jack from settling under the weight of your vehicle and coming off balance, place a small cut of 2x6” wood beneath it before attempting to raise your vehicle. This tactic is especially helpful on asphalt. With the jack properly positioned, raise the vehicle until the flat tire is about six inches above the ground.Never put any part of your body under the vehicle during or after raising the vehicle with the jack.9. UNSCREW THE LUG NUTSNow it’s time to remove the lug nuts all the way. Since you've already loosened them, you should be able to unscrew them mostly by hand.10. REMOVE THE FLAT TIREGripping the tire by the treads, pull it gently toward you until it’s completely free from the hub behind it. Set it on its side so that it doesn’t roll away.11. MOUNT THE SPARE TIRE ON THE LUG BOLTSNow place the spare on the hub by lining up the rim with the lug bolts. Push gently until the lug bolts show through the rim.12. TIGHTEN THE LUG NUTS BY HANDPut the lug nuts back on the lug bolts and tighten them all the way by hand. Once they are all on, check each one again, tightening as much as possible. You will tighten them with the wrench after lowering the vehicle to the ground.13. LOWER THE VEHICLE AND TIGHTEN THE LUG NUTS AGAINUse the jack to lower the vehicle so that the spare tire is resting on the ground but the full weight of the vehicle isn’t fully on the tire. At this point, you should tighten the lug nuts with the wrench, turning clockwise, as much as you can. Push down on the lug wrench with the full weight of your body.14. LOWER THE VEHICLE COMPLETELYBring the vehicle all the way to the ground and remove the jack. Give the lug nuts another pull with the wrench to ensure they’re as tight as possible.15. REPLACE THE HUBCAPIf the hubcap you took from the flat tire will fit your spare, put it in place the same way you removed it initially. If it doesn’t fit, stow it away with the tire when you stow your equipment.16. STOW ALL EQUIPMENTYou have before you a jack, a lug wrench, wheel wedges, your flat tire, and possibly a hubcap. Don’t forget to put all of them in your vehicle before driving away.17. CHECK THE PRESSURE IN THE SPARE TIREYou should check the tire pressure of the spare tire to make sure that it is safe to drive on. “T-Type” temporary spares, also called “mini-spares,” require 60 psi (420 kPa). If the tire needs pressure, drive (slowly) to a service station immediately.18. TAKE YOUR FLAT TIRE TO A TECHNICIANTemporary spare tires aren’t made to drive long distances or at high speeds, so drive cautiously until you’re able to visit a tire technician. A professional should be able to determine whether your tire needs a repair or if it’s time to replace it.HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO FIX A FLAT TIRE?Aside from taking your tire to a professional, the above procedure shouldn’t take more than 15 to 30 minutes to change a tire. Just be sure you don’t leave out any steps. It’s beneficial practice changing a tire in your garage or driveway to ensure you’re ready to handle this situation if it ever happens to you.A FEW MORE TIPS ON CHANGING TIRESKnowing how to fix a flat tire is great, but regular tire maintenance is even more important. In addition to reviewing this guide regularly, remember to do the following:· Keep your tires properly inflated· Rotate your tires according to the manufacturer’s guidelines· Monitor for tread wearAll of these precautions will extend the life of your tires and reduce the likelihood of a flat. While there’s no way to prevent flat tires completely, proper care can improve performance and ensure your tires last as long as possible.https://www.bridgestonetire.com/tread-and-trend/drivers-ed/how-to-change-a-flat-tire See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Teeth separating from the timing belt could result in an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash.2019 Fiat 500X, Jeep Renegade: Incorrect software may cause the occupant restraint controller module to disable certain passive safety features, which can increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash. 2018-2019 Honda Odyssey: Loose battery terminal connections or a degraded battery may cause the transmission control unit to unexpectedly reboot. The TCU may shift the transmission to Park upon rebooting, possibly damaging the parking rod and allowing the vehicle to roll when parked, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.Subaru Forester, Impreza, Legacy, Outback, WRX: The ball spring inside the switch may break, reducing the strength of the ignition switch. If this occurs, the weight on the key ring and certain road conditions could cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position to the accessory position, turning off the engine and increasing the risk of a crash. If a crash occurs under this condition, the airbag also may not deploy, increasing the risk of injury.2015-17 Toyota Yaris: Wire harnesses connecting side airbag sensors in the front doors to the airbag control unit could corrode over time, which could cause the airbag warning light to come on. Additionally, the front-seat side airbags and curtain shield airbags could be deactivated or not deploy properly, increasing the risk of injury in the event of a crash.2019 Toyota Sienna: During the manufacturing process of the passenger-side front doors, it’s possible that a component may not have been welded properly, which could affect an airbag system sensor and prevent deployment or cause inadvertent deployment of the passenger-side front seat and curtain shield airbags, increasing the risk of injury or crash. 2019 Nissan Altima: The brake switch bracket may be in the incorrect location, which may cause the brake switch to remain on. If the brake switch remains in the on position, the brakelights will remain illuminated when the brakes are not being pressed, which could confuse other drivers. Additionally, the transmission shift lever may be moved out of the Park position without the brake pedal being pressed, allowing the vehicle to roll unexpectedly. Either condition increases the risk of a crash. You can find out if your car has a past recall by going to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration’s website: https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls and inputting your VIN number.Consumer Reports has a list of 108 2007-17 models that have a record of much-worse-than-average overall reliability based on subscriber responses to their Annual Auto Survey. The number of stations selling fuel for less than $2 a gallon is shrinking as spring price spikes take effect. The national average price of gas has jumped 17 cents in the last month to $2.45, according to AAA. That figure is likely to increase by another 15 to 25 cents in the coming weeks, says Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst at fuel-tracking app GasBuddy. Could the U.S. come close to an average of $3 a gallon as the summer travel season approaches? Last year, prices topped out at $2.98 on May 25, according to GasBuddy. In recent weeks, national increases have occurred as fuel refineries begin annual maintenance projects typically timed for the spring. As the refineries shift to costlier summer blends of gasoline, prices usually increase. https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/markets/you-can-kiss-dollar2-gas-goodbye-heres-why-low-pump-prices-are-creeping-higher/ar-BBUuKog See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

The ISDA Secure Transportation and Executive Protection News Podcast for Friday, October 26th, 2018 ====================== In Vehicle News From Consumer Reports Vehicle Reliability Survey Consumer Reports just announced the results of its Annual Auto Survey based on data on reliability collected from the vehicles of over 500,000 Consumer Reports members. From this data, Consumer Reports can let shoppers know which vehicles are likely to have troublesome turbocharged engines, infuriating infotainment systems, and taxing transmissions, among other problems. Consumer Reports’ list is made up of 29 car manufacturers and points out each brand’s most unreliable and reliable vehicle. The survey reinforces our recommendation that consumers should avoid brand-new or redesigned models and wait a year or two until the automaker has had the chance to work out the kinks and headaches that often arise. The top 5 most unreliable vehicles are the Volvo S90 which suffered from display screen freezes; problems with the climate system and interior cabin rattles along with complaints about engine knocking or pinging, followed by the Cadillac ATS, Tesla Model x, Dodge Ram 3500, and GMC Sierra 2500 Heavy Duty. Looking at the reliability score of a few of the most common Executive Vehicles The 2019 Lexus LS has a score of 69, a road test score of 72 out of 100, with a reliability score of 3 out 5, and owner satisfaction of 4 out 5 The 2019 Genesis G90 has an overall score of 72, a road test score of 89 out of 100, with a reliability score of 2 out 5 with reported problems in the areas of body hardware and power equipment, and an owner satisfaction of 5 out 5. The 2019 Audi A8 does not have an overall score as of yet, however the reliability score is 3 out 5, and the owner satisfaction of 4 out 5. The 2019 Chevrolet Suburban has an overall score of 69, a road test score of 74 out of 100, a reliability score of 3 out 5, and owner satisfaction of 4 out 5. The 2019 Lincoln Navigator has an overall score of 60, a road test score of 65 out of 100, a reliability score of 3 out 5, with an owner satisfaction rate of 4 out 5. https://www.consumerreports.org/car-reliability-owner-satisfaction/who-makes-the-most-reliable-cars/ ====================== In Security News From CNN Investigators search Florida mail facility for clues to bombmaker The nationwide manhunt for the person or people who sent 10 potential bombs to critics of President Donald Trump and CNN's office in New York led authorities to a mail facility in South Florida on Thursday night. Several of the packages went through a US Postal facility in Opa-locka, Florida, two law enforcement officials familiar with the investigation said. On Thursday night, the Miami-Dade County Police Department said it was assisting federal agents who were at the facility as part of the ongoing investigation. https://www.cnn.com/2018/10/26/politics/bombs-clinton-obama-waters-biden/index.html ====================== And from ISDA Member Bill Peeler, CEO, and owner of Peeler Group International Bombs and Bomb Threats – A Refresher As a professional you depend on our training and not your emotions. In the past couple of days, we have observed the location of at least nine explosive devices in the United States. As with any situation where aggressive behavior is displayed through terroristic acts or violent threats, emotions are charged. As my good friend, Dr. Richard Kobetz would say, “it’s an old bottle of wine with a new label”. To this end we adjust our methods of mitigation in these situations as required by contemporary times, having said this, we still look to historical protocols that have worked and we stick with them. So, to assist with focusing on what matters I thought I would provide a quick refresher as to what anyone should be aware of and what you should be doing on a daily basis. Bill’s article also includes a Bomb Threat Caller checklist and a Suspicious package checklist http://www.peelergroup.com/bombs-and-bomb-threats-a-refresher/ ====================== In Cyber Security News From Security Magazine Phishing Attacks up by 297 Percent in Q3 2018 A report illustrates how cybercriminals are increasingly targeting retailers and their customers through digital and social channels as retailers leverage new channels for increased revenue opportunities "The Retail and eCommerce Threat Landscape Report (October 2018), notes a 297 percent rise in the number of false retailer websites designed to "phish" for customer credentials. In Q3 alone there was an average of 23 phishing sites per company, which is a significant increase from 2017, which averaged 5.9 phishing attacks per company. In addition, says the report, there was a 278 percent rise in stolen goods listed on black markets for resale. Even more: an average of 22.1 internal login pages or development servers exposed per retail company in 2018.
