Jon and Carie Hallford, the owners of Return to Nature Funeral Home in Penrose, Colorado, pleaded guilty to federal wire fraud charges related to their alleged misuse of pandemic relief funds and customer payments. The couple is accused of spending nearly $900,000 in relief funds on personal luxuries, including vehicles, designer items, and vacations, while leaving over 190 bodies decomposing in their facility, according to court documents. This facility, located about an hour south of Denver, became the focus of a federal investigation after the bodies were discovered in conditions that horrified families and state officials alike. The Hallfords pleaded guilty to one count each of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. Prosecutors, per the plea agreement, are limited to requesting no more than a 15-year prison sentence, though the agreement awaits final approval by a judge. Assistant U.S. Attorney Tim Neff stated that the plea deal encompasses both the Hallfords' acknowledgment of COVID-19 relief fraud and additional fraud perpetrated against their customers. According to court filings, the Hallfords diverted funds intended for business expenses during the pandemic toward a lavish lifestyle. Purchases reportedly included a GMC Yukon and an Infiniti worth over $120,000 collectively, cryptocurrency investments of $31,000, body sculpting services, trips to California, Florida, and Las Vegas, and luxury items from brands like Gucci and Tiffany & Co. "These funds were supposed to support struggling businesses during the pandemic, not to fuel extravagant personal spending," noted Assistant U.S. Attorney Tim Neff, highlighting the gravity of the Hallfords' actions. The grim conditions discovered at Return to Nature Funeral Home extended beyond financial misconduct. An investigation following last year's discovery revealed bodies stacked haphazardly, some reportedly in place since 2019. In some instances, the wrong bodies were buried, and the remains provided to grieving families often included fake ashes made of dry concrete. The Associated Press reported that the Hallfords fabricated cremation records, leaving families devastated upon learning that their loved ones had never been properly handled. Crystina Page, a mother whose son's body was left decomposing in the Hallfords' facility, expressed her anguish during the court hearing, stating, “My son was one of those victims; he lost 60% of his body weight.” She painfully recounted the conditions she believed he endured, saying, “Rats and maggots ate his face.” Page expressed her frustration with the limited plea deal but acknowledged it was “as close to justice as [she] was going to get.” The federal indictment added to an extensive list of charges already pending against the Hallfords in Colorado state court, where they face more than 200 counts related to corpse abuse and forgery. Meanwhile, Jon Hallford's defense is being handled by the federal public defender's office, which has not commented on the case. Attempts to reach Carie Hallford's legal team were unsuccessful, and her attorney in state proceedings, Michael Stuzynski, declined to provide further comments. The disturbing details emerging from the Hallfords' case prompted Colorado lawmakers to reevaluate and reform state funeral home regulations in 2024. New laws now require routine inspections and mandatory licensing for funeral home operators, a move motivated by the stories of families who, like Crystina Page, had their final goodbyes to loved ones turned into moments of anguish and loss. From the BG Ad Group Studio this is your news minute on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Today is Wednesday, July 17th, and I'm Keith Ippolito. One Killed in Multi-Car Collision in Austell Tragedy struck in Austell on Tuesday afternoon after a multi-car collision left one person dead. The incident occurred on Hicks Road, near Cobb Fire Department's Station 7. At around 3:30 p.m., a white GMC Sierra veered across the center line, colliding with a black GMC Yukon and causing it to flip onto its side. The Sierra continued its path of destruction, crashing into a silver Ford Escape and pushing it into a guardrail over a creek, before finally hitting a grey Hyundai Sonata. The driver of the Ford Escape sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The names of those involved are yet to be released as authorities work to notify next of kin. Like the Cadillac Escalade from a few weeks ago, GMC's body-on-frame SUV is predictably posh on its upmarket trim variants. Also like Cadillac's Escalade, the GMC Yukon is based on the General Motors body-on-frame platform that underpins a Chevrolet analog. Like the rest of this GM family of SUVs, the Yukon entered its fifth generation in '21 and ditched its rear stick axle. Now sporting an independent rear suspension, the Yukon Denali's air suspension makes for an even smoother ride. The Yukon Denali comes with 6.2 liters of V8 power under the hood, which sends 420 hp and 460 lb-ft through a ten-speed transmission. Of course, the entry-level Yukon models come with the smaller 5.3-liter V8 as standard equipment, but the 3.0-liter Duramax diesel I6. On this episode of Quick Spin Hearst Autos Gear Team member Jon Langston hopped behind a Super Cruise equipped Yukon Denali. Langston takes you on a guided tour of a '23 Yukon Denali and highlights some of his favorite features. Langston also takes you along for a live drive review. Adding to these segments, Langston chats with host Wesley Wren about the Yukon Denali, his experience on a 1,600-mile road trip, and more. Closing the show, the pair break down what makes the 2023 Yukon Denali special.

Wednesday and wheels up for us as we delve deep into Colorado's controversial proposal to charge owners of large, pedestrian-unfriendly vehicles. We also unpack the surge of affordable EV leases under $400 a month and the impact of the expanded UAW strike on GM and Stellantis. Not long after GM announced their Q3 earnings the UAW has initiated a strike at General Motors' high-profit SUV plant in Texas, impacting the production of key models and deepening the financial blow to the Detroit 35,000 workers at GM's Arlington Assembly in Texas were ordered to strike by UAW President Shawn Fain. This plant manufactures the Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban, GMC Yukon, and Cadillac Escalade.UAW President Shawn Fain said "Another record quarter, another record year. As we've said for months, record profits equal record contracts. It's time GM workers, and the whole working class, get their fair share."GM responded by expressing disappointment in the UAW's decision, highlighting that they had increased their previous proposal's value to the union by 25% just last week. The UAW's strike expansion also affected Stellantis' profitable Sterling Heights Assembly in Michigan yesterday, which produces Ram 1500 pickups.A proposed bill in Colorado seeks to introduce a “vulnerable road user protection registration fee” for heavier vehicles, with the intent to funnel the revenue into pedestrian and bike safety projects. The fee aims to generate around $20 million annually. However, even a 9,000-lb vehicle like the Hummer EV would only be subjected to an extra fee of $29.90 each year. The fee will only be charged Colorado's 12 most populated counties, where most pedestrian and bicycle accidents occur.State Senator Lisa Cutter said that “Data shows us that higher vehicle weights directly correlate with vulnerable road user deaths. It just makes sense to tie funding to that."Electric vehicles won't be exemptrom the registration fee.In 2024, Washington D.C. will raise registration fees based on weight: from $155 to $500 for over 6k lbs, from $155 to $250 for over 5k lbs, and from $115 to $175 for 3500-5k lbsA range of automakers are now offering electric vehicle leases for under $400 a month, making EVs more accessible to the average consumer and ramping up competition in the market.Multiple automakers including Nissan, Hyundai, and Kia are offering leases for electric vehicles like the 2023 Nissan LEAF, Hyundai Ioniq 6, and Kia Niro EV for under $400 per month. Some buyers are utilizing a "1-day lease" The lease tax "loophole" allows all vehicles to access benefits, irrespective of the $7,500 IRA tax credit income eligibility. Lease it for one day, they buy out the lease. On Tuesday, March 26th, 2018, the tranquil scenery of Northern California's Highway 1 in Mendocino County was eclipsed by a disturbing scene. As a tourist was passing by, soaking in the views from 100 feet above the waves, crashing below, he noticed something out of place. From the rocks below, the undercarriage of a GMC Yukon was looking up at him. At first, the undercarriage blended in with the dark rocks. But once he registered what he was really looking at, he immediately called 911 and what authorities found inside the Yukon was a sinister nightmare. This is the story of the Hart family. Time really flies, because the 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe marks the second model year of the icon's 5th generation. Whoah, 'icon' - really? Yes. Perhaps that's this reporter's opinion but my bet is that there are plenty who agree. ⇒iDSC's Chevy HQ is Martin Chevrolet! The seven (and up to eight) passenger Tahoe shares the platform with a couple of siblings. But there's always been something special about the full-size SUV. Although the GMC Yukon is slightly more upscale. And the Cadillac Escalade is even a bit more upscale. The Chevy Tahoe just brings it all. Performance, styling, and capability. Moreover, the big sport-ute costs less than its aforementioned brethren. And I dig that! 2022 Chevy Tahoe Top-3: Drive Styling Interior ⇒Continue reading below and click play to listen.⇐ 7-8 Passenger full-size SUV 2022 Chevy Tahoe - New For 2022 So, just last year Tahoe was all-new. But Chevy continues to inspire with available new stuff for 2022. For example, there are some cool new exterior colors - auburn metallic, evergreen gray metallic and darks ash metallic. Plus some cool tech options. Like reverse auto-braking. Also, front and rear park assist. Additionally lane-keep assist with lane departure warnings. Camera monitoring views get enhanced along with Google Assistant. Even better is the digital instrument cluster. That comes standard on LT trims and above. Finally, we can't leave out the 6.2-liter V8 that's now available for Premier and Z71 trims. Trims And Pricing As always Chevrolet provides multiple trims, and all of these assure you are able to make Tahoe explicitly yours. 2022 Tahoe trims and starting MSRPs: LS $50,200 LT $55,600 RST $58,800 Z71 $60,800 Premier $63,600 High Country $70,500 Also, the test driver you see pictured throughout this post is a 4WD LT. Engines, Transmissions, And Gas Mileage Tahoe is a true sport utility vehicle. Which, might be obvious to some. But in the world of crossover SUVs, that's worth pointing out. But while it's closer to a truck than a car, Chevy doesn't go to the extent of engine and transmission options. Like, for example, what the carmaker does with Silverado. Engines For 2022 Tahoe can come with three different motors: 5.3L V8, 355 horsepower, and 383 pound-feet of torque 6.2L V8, 420 hp, and 460 lb-ft of torque 3.0L Turbo-Diesel, 277 hp, and 460 lb-ft of torque Drivetrain Regardless of the powerplant, the 2022 Chevy Tahoe comes equipped with the same transmission. And it's a smooth-shifting and efficient 10-speed automatic. So you're left with the choice of 2WD or 4WD. And here's another point that might be obvious but worth noting. The 2WD option is rear-wheel drive. MPG When it comes to fuel-economy Tahoe is in really good shape. Because a full-size Tahoe delivers about the same EPA estimated fuel economy as my midsize Toyota Tacoma. (And that hurt, frankly, when a realized it!) 2022 Tahoe Fuel-Economy: 5.3L V8 2WD 15/20 4WD tbd/tbd 6.2L V8 2WD 14/20 4WD 14/19 3.0L turbo-diesel 2WD 21/28 4WD 20/26 *All city/highway Speaking of my Tacoma, that's a 2WD - making the fuel-economy comparison all the more painful! And it used to be that I'd suggest buying 4WD only if you think you'll be using it. But with Tahoe's fuel efficiency, just get the 4WD. Because it doesn't cost that much more anyway. Plus, it increases your resale value. So, you might as well have it. 8 to 10-inches of ground clearance What Does 2022 Chevy Tahoe Look Like? I love the look of the new Tahoe - this fifth generation we're enjoying. While that's not changed from last year to this year it's both a beautiful and bold design. For instance, even though the trim pictured throughout this post is an LT trim, it's still a handsome SUV. Remember that the LT is only one step above the base-model LS.
Hey y'all and welcome to Southern Macabre! A true crime, missing person, and paranormal podcast and blog set in the south. Today is the first episode of Missing Person Monday and I decided to choose one person from each southern state to tell you about. Some are people who left their homes and vanished, while others may just send a chill up your spine. One is actually a dangerous wanted fugitive! Photos of the missing will be on the Southern Macabre Podcast and Blog Facebook page. You will find the transcript for this episode along with the police department you should reach if you recognize anyone from today's episode on the blog. The first missing person I want to talk about vanished 37 years ago from Greenville, Alabama. Her name was Sherry Lynn Marler and she was only twelve years old that day when she and her step-dad, Raymond Stringfellow, went to the bank and he gave her $1 to grab a soda from the gas station across the street. This was 1984 so a drink was less than a dollar, for those too young to know that. Her step-dad maintained his innocence until he passed away in 2003, he was inside the bank so he had a solid alibi. Since 1984, people have reported seeing Sherry with a man in his fifties who was about 5'8” with a weathered looking face. Like someone who spends their whole life working outdoors. She was seen in Conley, Georgia, and New Orleans. Sherry was white with brown hair and brown eyes. Greenville PD (334) 382-3107 Agency Case # 8415816 Esterlyne Delmas was twenty-three years old when she walked away from her home in Immokalee, Florida on August 3, 2013. She didn't take her keys, purse, or ID so it is assumed she didn't intend to be gone long. She was never seen or heard from again. Esterlyne had moved to Florida from Haiti years before, but there's not a lot of information about her or her disappearance. She is listed as African American/Latino. She was 5'1” and had black-brown hair and brown eyes. Collier County Sheriff's Office (239) 252-0080 Case # 13-18797 42 year old Matilde Hernandez Gonzalez went missing from Powder Springs, Georgia on October 11, 2019. According to WSB-TV 2 there are “suspicious circumstances” related to her disappearance. Matilde was Latina, 4'11” tall, and weighed about 130 pounds. She had brown hair, brown eyes, and her eyebrows are tattooed. Paulding County Sheriff's Office (770) 443-3010 Case # 20191043402 This story is different from the last three. Austin Douglas Gamez (not Gomez) left with his friend, Teressa McCoy on December 27, 2017 to look at a house. They lived in Louisville, Kentucky. At 7pm the couple's rented black GMC Yukon was found in a part's store parking lot with Teressa's body inside. She was still wearing her seatbelt, but had been shot. Larry Sauer was arrested in December 2019 for Teressa's murder and Austin's presumed murder. He killed the couple at his home and then dumped the truck with Teressa inside afterwards. Police found evidence through warrants, witness statements, phone records, and audio recordings identifying Sauer's involvement in both murders. Austin's remains were never located. Police found half a pound of methamphetamines and some drug paraphernalia inside Sauer's home when they arrested him. Charges were dropped two months later because of a misread DNA analysis report, but he was charged with complicity to murder and tampering with physical evidence. Austin's family would like his body found so they can give him a proper burial. He was white/Latino, 5'11”-6'1”, 170-185 pounds, and he had a rosary tattoo on his chest and many tattoos on his arms.
