Shoot us a Text.Episode #1049: Today we're diving into Toyota's bold software move with the redesigned RAV4 Hybrid, watching Tesla and Waymo duel for robotaxi dominance, and seeing how Home Depot is holding the line on prices as tariffs rattle retailShow Notes with links:Toyota's sixth-gen RAV4 Hybrid isn't just sleeker—it's smarter. As the first model to feature the all-new Arene operating system, the global bestseller is now a testbed for Toyota's software-first future.Arene is built by Woven by Toyota, the automaker's in-house software arm and made up of three core components: Arene SDK (to build apps and features), Arene Tools (to virtually test them), and Arene Data (to collect and use real-world driver feedback). In practice, that means Toyota can push OTA updates that improve safety systems like Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 based on global user data, often updating every few weeks or months, mirroring how smartphone OS updates roll out.The SDK powers the new voice agent and center display; the data system creates a feedback loop that improves regional performance by learning from users in 180 countries.“Software can be an added layer where we can evolve the car over time,” said Woven CTO John Absmeier. “We help your Toyota grow old with you.”Tesla and Waymo are tackling robotaxis from different angles—Tesla with bold camera-only tech, and Waymo with sensor-packed precision. But a real-world test in San Francisco handed one of them a clear win.Waymo's service, active since 2024, uses 29 cameras, 5 lidars, and 6 radars in Jaguar I-PACEs.Tesla's FSD Supervised software, tested in a Model 3, relies solely on eight external cameras—with its FSD Unsupervised version launching in Austin next month. On winding SF roads from Twin Peaks to Chase Center, both systems performed well—until Tesla's FSD ran a red light at a busy intersection. The Waymo delivered a confident, human-like ride, including a lane change that “seemed like it was just tired of waiting.”“It's got New York cab driver energy,” said tester Alistair Barr of Waymo's proactive driving style. As tariffs squeeze the retail sector, Home Depot is leaning into its U.S.-based supply chain and scale advantage to keep prices steady—even as competitors like Walmart warn of price hikes.Over half of Home Depot's inventory is sourced domestically, with imports on the decline.CFO Richard McPhail says no single foreign country will represent more than 10% of purchases within 12 months.Q1 2025 revenue rose 9.4% to $39.9B, with average transaction values ticking up slightly to $90.71.The company saw 394.8 million transactions, a 2.1% increase year-over-year.“We saw continued customer engagement across smaller projects,” said CEO Ted Decker.Join Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier every morning for the Automotive State of the Union podcast as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/

Auto - Rund ums Auto.

Show #810   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 15th June 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   LUCID: DON'T CALL US "TESLA KILLERS" "With a brand-new, state-of-the-art factory nearing completion in the Southwest desert and an energy-dense battery pack using cylindrical cells, it's all-too tempting to set up a rivalry between Lucid Motors and Tesla. Heck, it's a trope that we've been guilty of using in the past." says Ars Technica: "But it's a bad take, according to Peter Rawlinson, Lucid's CEO and CTO. "Please don't describe us as a Tesla killer," he told me. "The world's big enough that we can both thrive and prosper alongside each other.". the Air will use a 900V electrical architecture, higher than even the Porsche Taycan. Rawlinson said that the Air has also moved to a new in-house silicon carbide inverter, as well as a switch from induction to permanent magnet motors front and rear. The Air's cylindrical lithium-ion cells will be made by LG Chem, but Lucid has designed and will build the packs itself. And Formula E has contributed to the management of the packs—Lucid supplies batteries to all the teams in that race series. The company's experience in Formula E has taught it a lot about predictive modeling of degradation."   Peter Rawlinson was VP on Vehicle Engineering at Tesla before 2013.   He said: "They're our own design, which is very innovative—they've got very low cogging torque, so ultra-efficient. We've got our own epicyclic reduction transmission, our own differential, all which is super-innovative, state of the art. The rotor will spin to 20,000rpm, and each of those in standard form is rated at 600hp (447kW)," he said, adding that the combined motor, gearbox, differential, and inverter weighs in at just 160lbs (73kg). The key metric is volumetric power density, which is creeping up very close to 17kW per liter," Rawlinson told me. "And I think that's unprecedented—that's twice as good as any competitor out there that I'm aware of. That's a cornerstone of what we've done with LG Chem now in our production supply agreement. We've worked with them to help develop the cell chemistry to a much higher standard, particularly making it degrade less as a consequence of repeated fast charging. That's important because the 900V architecture has been developed very much with our fast-charge network partner Electrify America in mind."   Read the full interview here: https://arstechnica.com/cars/2020/06/please-dont-describe-us-as-a-tesla-killer-ars-talks-to-lucid-motors   VW ID.4 MAKES ITS BEST KIA IMPRESSION IN NEW SPY PHOTOS "In late March this year, our photographers caught a prototype of the Volkswagen ID.4 that was masked to look like an Opel Grandland X. The same strategy was used by the company’s engineers and test drivers in November last year, and they’ve done it again. This time around, however, they’ve disguised the all-electric crossover to look like a Kia." says Motor1.com: "According to preliminary information, power will be provided by two electric motors for a combined output of approximately 302 horsepower. The battery electric vehicle should be capable of covering up to 310 miles (500 kilometers) in the WLTP test at a single charge, which will be around 277 miles in the EPA evaluation."   https://www.motor1.com/news/428784/vw-id4-spied-again/   2021 TOYOTA RAV4 PRIME VS 2020 FORD ESCAPE PHEV SPEC COMPARISON Price Ford: SE PHEV retails for $33,040, while the others are priced at $35,620 and $38,835 respectively. RAV4: Pricing has not yet been shared though we assume it will start around the $40k mark in the US, and somewhere between $47,000 and $50,000 in Canada.   "The Toyota RAV4 Prime is meant to do it all. The Prime is based on the Hybrid’s 2.5-litre 4-cylinder Atkinson-cycle engine however the hybrid is further boosted by the more powerful motor-generators and new high-capacity 17.8-kWh Lithium-Ion battery increase system output to 302-horsepower, from 219." says Motor Illustrated: "Part of the setup is an electric motor on the rear axle that has no physical link to the front. This second motor is standard on all RAV4 Hybrid and Prime thus all are AWD. Performance is plentiful with a 0-100 km/h time of only 6.2 seconds (0-60 mph in 5.7 seconds). Fun fact: This makes the RAV4 Prime the second fastest accelerating Toyota after the GR Supra. The combined fuel consumption rating of 2.6Le/100km, or 90 MPGe. The battery-only range is 67 kilometers, or 42 miles. The 2020 Ford Escape PHEV is different in that it is FWD only, contrary to the Hybrid version,  which will prove to be an obstacle for much of Canada and the Northern regions of the US. It too is powered by an Atkinson-cycle 2.5-litre 4-cylinder engine and it, with the associated electric motor, produces a total system output of 221-horsepower. The 14.4-kWh battery-only range is rated at least 48 kilometers in Canada, or 37 miles in the US."   RAV4 - Heat pump too. 3kW onboard charger as standard.   https://motorillustrated.com/2021-toyota-rav4-prime-vs-2020-ford-escape-phev-spec-comparison/49408/   ELECTRIFY CANADA EXPANDS NETWORK OF HIGH-SPEED EV CHARGERS TO BRITISH COLUMBIA "With the opening of its first British Columbia station in Merritt, B.C, Electrify Canada today announces its official expansion into Western Canada. The high-speed electric vehicle charging network will also announce an additional eight charging station locations expected to open throughout the province by the end of this year." says Tom Molougney for InsideEVs: "Electrify Canada already has four charging station sites open in Ontario, with fifteen more in the planning stage in Ontario and Quebec, so it's good to see the western part of the country finally getting some love also.  Electrify Canada's first phase of deployment includes the installation of a total of 32 charging station sites. Those include the nineteen in Quebec and Ontario and thirteen in Alberta and British Colombia."   https://insideevs.com/news/428806/electrify-canada-expands-british-columbia/   TESLA RECEIVES APPROVAL TO BECOME AN ELECTRIC UTILITY PROVIDER IN THE UK "Tesla has officially been granted an electricity generation license in the United Kingdom, in response to the electric car maker’s application last April. Reports indicate that the approval paves the way for Tesla to establish a virtual power plant in the region, which would be managed by its custom Autobidder software, a real-time trading and control platform that enables power producers to monetize battery assets." says Simon at TEslarati: "The UK’s recent approval for Tesla’s application is a noteworthy milestone for Tesla Energy, whose potential remains largely untapped. Tesla Energy is a big business, and it builds on two of the company’s most prominent strengths: software and batteries. This is one of the reasons why Tesla’s big battery in South Australia, the Hornsdale Power Reserve, has been so successful. The massive Powerpack farm is managed by Autobidder, the same system that the company is reportedly poised to utilize in the UK."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-energy-utility-provider-application-uk-approved/   FORD MUSTANG MACH-E CUSTOMERS TO RECEIVE 250 KWH ELECTRIFY AMERICA CREDIT Ford Mustang Mach-E owners will receive 250 kilowatt-hours of complimentary charging through FordPass Rewards at Electrify America fast-charging stations to kick-start their electric vehicle experience with Ford. Should you buy a hybrid? This obviously depends on you - what you want and how you drive - and this report is inspired by common questions from people like you. Full details next. Toyota with the hype surrounding the new RAV4 Hybrid (pity about the production botch there) but also with the company’s affordable Corolla Hybrid and the Prius, which has become the Coca-Cola of hybrids, owing to smart positioning and long-term market presence. Hyundai also lobbing relatively recently with the Ioniq - which was just upgraded. As well as a straight EV version, Ioniq is available in two flavours of hybrid - the self-charging one that recharges the battery with regenerative braking, and the PHEV Ioniq, which also recharges by plugging into the grid (optionally). So, more people than ever are considering hybrids for the first time. Tim Bosher is one of them: We live in regional Vic. My wife drives about 100k per week locally and has a weekly 250k return trip to the city at freeway speeds - so her annual k's are a bit over the average. I have asked a couple of dealers about the pros & cons of hybrid cars for the above type of driving mix and their responses seem to be largely bullshit. What is your take - and when does the price premium for hybrids make them a realistic proposition. - Tim Bosher Here’s the answer that lines up with reality: hybrids do their energy management voodoo by regeneratively braking. When you brake or even just coast to slow down, they convert some kinetic energy to electricity and store it in a battery to help you get going again, presumably when the lights go green. It is proper energy management voodoo - if you use Arthur C Clarke’s epic definition for magic. And if you don’t: look it up. It’s awesome. Hybrids are therefore far more effective at saving fuel driving around town. Because that’s where you do all the voodoo-invoking coasting and braking. On the freeway, all the hybrid equipment - the battery and the motor, and the control and management architecture - it all tends just to become excess baggage. It’s just not very effective ‘out there’. In Tim’s case, 70 per cent of his wife’s driving is on the freeway, so she’d probably get a better result on fuel economy and emissions in a small diesel car, like an i30 diesel. Because diesels really stretch their fuel economy legs on the freeway - and that kind of driving is just ‘Goldilocks’ for keeping the DPF (the diesel particle filter) happy and healthy. PHEV is a hybrid with a bigger than usual battery that you can plug in overnight and recharge. So it’s kinda BEV + ICE as a range extender, as the good doc says, but I’d categorise it more as a Hybrid with a big battery that gives it additional, but still extremely short-distance, low demand battery-only operating capability. That’s generally how they roll. You might get 30 or 40 kays of battery-only operation at low loads - but if you pull out to overtake, the internal combustion engine will kick in. Because the electric side of the plug-in hybrid is only good for low to moderate performance. On the battery - in a PHEV it’s a big battery in the context of hybrids but still small for an EV. Batteries are so expensive, which is why, for example the PHEV Hyundai Ioniq is so much cheaper than the full-on Ioniq EV.
