During my vacation, we had to replace the brakes and rotors on our vehicle. While the cost was lower at the shop we visited, I wanted to share the valuable lesson I learned from the experience. Driving with faulty brakes and rotors gave me a new perspective on the importance of maintenance and the steps needed to fix the problem. I realized that this experience offers an insightful analogy for leadership in everyday life—highlighting the necessity of regular checks, timely repairs, and the patience required for a smooth and effective process while leading others.

What are the newest protections out there? What kind of projects going on in the world? From our side of view, how does aerodynamics leading edge roughness affect lightning? A lot of really cool things going on there. Of course, DTU is always doing great work. But that's where Allen is today. So this week I'm going to try to be my best Allen. I'm Joel Saxum, the chief commercial officer of Weather Guard Lightning Tech. And I'm here with international renewables expert, Rosemary Barnes. Plus, wind energy economics and data guru Phil Totaro from IntelStor. This is the Uptime Wind Energy Podcast. So speaking about offshore wind in the United States and how the IRA bill is interacting and if it's kicking off manufacturing facilities or what's actually happening on the ground, today there was an announcement by US Forged Rings Inc. It'd be the USA's only integrated one stop shop manufacturer for offshore wind towers and steel forging. What they released today in an article was, or in a press release was, the fact that they're going to have two factories up and running on the east coast. One by 2026, one by 2027. And they're going to work together. To build these large scale steel infrastructure that we need for offshore wind in the U. S. So one of one of the factories is going to output towers. They're saying a hundred towers per year with a 35 foot diameter on them and the other factory that's going to be completing 2027. It's for forging and ring rolling, and they can do up to 40 feet in diameter. So what this will do is be able to help the U. S. market create its own transition pieces, its own, bearing races, its own caps for the towers and whatnot. But Phil, what are the larger reaching implications of this press release? Philip Totaro: It's extremely good for the offshore wind market where, a company is looking to obviously take advantage of the 45x manufacturing tax credits. What's interesting about this, though, is that in addition to this serving the offshore wind market, assuming that this factory exists, we don't actually have a lot of particularly forging capabilities in the United States for anything above, let's say, like a megawatt onshore turbine. We usually have to import a lot of that stuff from Europe. Even Asia doesn't have the, a full capability to do, enormous 6, onshore turbines. A lot of that they're actually getting from Europe as well. Surprisingly, to, to most. The fact that this, these factories will exist, and, the tower factory with, it's going to start off at 100 units a year and they said that it's going to potentially expand to 200 units a year. We'll see. Maybe some of those units will actually be dedicated to to some onshore wind turbines as well. If we can get the offshore market really going,

Die Anfangsjahre des Kunstvereins < rotor >? Sehr privat. For episode 86 of the Flatirons Syndicate Motorsports Podcast, Jon sits down with Ken from KNS Brakes for a deep conversation about, you guessed it, brakes. In the Subaru world, whether you have a WRX, STI, or a BRZ, there are a lot of options when it comes to brakes. And if you have a WRX, one of the first upgrades that people tend to look at is moving up to the STI Brembo Brakes. To do this properly, you need some special parts in the rear, and KNS has the best options for many of these swaps. Not only that, but Ken, and KNS in general has a ton of experience with a variety of brake pads and rotors for many different applications. Since brakes were the topic of conversation for this episode, we start talking about pads and rotors and the different options that you have there. Once we covered those, we then move on to talking about when you would need to look at a Big Brake Kit, and the things that you need to consider there to make sure you get something that will work best for you. So if you have been wanting to upgrade the brakes on your car, and you aren't sure what the best place to start is, you are in the right place. Thanks for listening and Stay Tuned!

We take the podcast on the road and visit with Mark DiCiero at Classic Rotors.  Classic Rotors is a rare and vintage rotorcraft museum located at the Ramona Airport.  It is one of only two helicopter museums in America and one of four in the world.  During our conversation Mark shares the story of how we built his own helicopter in his early 20s, learned to fly it in his backyard and shocked licensing officials with his amateur skills.  Then we got into some of the incredible 35 “birds” in his museum including his prized collection of 4 of the 5 generations of tandem helicopters and his flagship H-21 “Flying Banana”.  We also learn about innovative personal aircraft, early military drones from the 1960s, blimps with rotors and an amazing new drone technology that can fight fires autonomously 24/7.  I enjoyed the story of his adventure flying a helicopter from South Carolina to Ramona and how he paid for fuel. Classic Rotors is a non-profit museum that hosts tours for aviation enthusiasts, students and the general public.  The museum is always grateful for the financial support of benefactors that share the love of helicopters and aviation history. We share thoughts on so many other people and issues including Igor Sikorsky, Frank Piasecki, Arthur Young, Harold Pitcairn and Stanley Hiller, Oshkosh, Wisconsin, MASH, President of the United States, Vietnam War, Korean War, Papua, New Guinea, Jessica Johnson, Hidden San Diego, gyrocopter, Doris Day, Jetsons, Space Race, Huey, Robinson Helicopter, R66, F-86, Helipod, chainsaw motors, Balboa Park, Triphibian, turbine engine, Alpine and much more. #JohnRileyProject #ClassicRotors #Helicopters #PursuitofHappiness JRP0022 Classic Rotors Info: Classic Rotors:  https://www.rotors.org/ John Riley Project Info: Bookings? Host: Jeff Fox with special guests, Julia Yeomans and Vikas Berry. Julia Yeomans of Oxford University in the United Kingdom and chemical engineer Vikas Berry of the University of Illinois, Chicago, talk with Jeff Fox about their separate, but in some ways similar, research efforts in which they use bacteria to perturb and probe the physical properties of simple machines, in one case, and unusual materials, in the other. Yeomans and her collaborators are developing models of miniature windfarms in which 64 rotors are arrayed regularly within a symmetric lattice, to which actively swimming bacteria are added. Under appropriate constraints, the bacteria spontaneously organize in such a way that they induce neighboring rotors to spin in opposite directions. Single rotors would be "kicked around randomly," the researchers say, but the arrayed rotors form "a regular pattern." Yeomans says, "Nature is brilliant at creating tiny engines, and there is enormous potential if we can understand how to exploit similar designs." Berry and his collaborators aligned rod-shaped gram-positive bacteria and then vacuum-shrunk a graphene sheet over them, thus forming nanoscale ripples into the otherwise smooth graphene surface. "The current across the graphene wrinkles is less than the current along them," says Berry. "We envision that with graphene one could make the smallest wavelength wrinkles in the world—about 2 nanometers. The structure is different, and the fundamental electronic properties are new." The scope of this work is to gain insight and a deeper understanding of exploring and controlling molecular devices like proteins and rotors by fine tuned manipulation via mechanical or electrical energies. I focus on three main topics. First, I investigate vectorial forces as a tool to explore the energy landscape of protein complexes. Second, I apply this method to a biologically important force transduction complex, the integrin-talin complex. Third, I use Terahertz electric fields to manipulate the energy landscape of a molecular rotor on a gold surface and drive their effective rotation bidirectionally. Force is by nature a vector and depends on its three parameters: magnitude, direction and attachment point. Here, the impact of different force protocols varying these parameters is shown for an antibody-antigen complex and the ribonuclease-inhibitor complex barnase-barstar. Antibodies are essential for our adaptive immune system in their function to bind specific antigens. Here, the binding of an antibody to a peptide is probed with varying attachment points. Different attachment points clearly change the dissociation pathways. The barriers identified using experimental atomic force microscopy (AFM) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are in excellent agreement. I determine the molecular interactions of two main barriers for each setup. This results in a common outer barrier of the complex and different inner barriers probed by AFM. The ribonuclease barnase and its inhibitor barstar form an evolutionary optimized complex. Different force protocols are shown to determine the hierarchy of relative stability within a protein complex. For the barnase-barstar complex, the internal fold of the barstar is identified to be less stable than the barnase-barstar binding interaction. High velocities probe the lability or barriers of the system while low velocities probe the stability or energy wells of this system. Forces impact biological life on totally different length scales which range from whole organisms to individual proteins. Integrins are the major cell adhesion receptors binding to the extracellular matrix and talin. Talin activates the integrins and creates the initial connection to the actin cytoskeleton of the cell. Here, I have chosen to investigate the integrin-talin complex as a biologically important force transduction complex. The force dependence of the system is probed by constant force MD simulations. The two main results include the activation of the complex and its force response. I demonstrate, that the binding of talin to integrin does not disrupt the integrin's transmembrane helix interactions sterically. Since, this disruption is necessary for integrin activation, a modified activation mechanism requiring a small force application is proposed. The response of the integrin-talin complex normal and parallel to the cell membrane is analyzed. The complete dissociation pathways generated for both directions identify a force-induced formation of a stabilizing beta strand between integrin and talin only for normal forces. Furthermore, the complex tries to rotate such that the external force aligns with the more force resistant axis of the complex. In nature, molecular rotors are essential building blocks of many molecular machines and brownian motors like the F1-ATPase or the flagellum of a bacterium. The direction of rotation often steers different processes in clockwise and counterclockwise directions. Rotation on the nanoscopic level in artificial devices is still very limited and requires a deeper understanding. In my last project, I study the switching and driving of a molecular diethylsulfid rotor on a gold (111) surface by Terahertz electric fields. The response of the rotational energy landscape to static and oscillation electric fields is analyzed. Varying the Terahertz driving frequency, the rotation direction and frequency are controlled. A theoretical framework is presented to describe the behavior of the molecular rotor. This can be seen as the first step into the direction of man-made controllable nano-devices driven and controlled by energy from the electric wall-socket.
