Suretank, the leading provider of modular and tank solutions for global infrastructure, pharma, marine and energy companies, has announced the expansion of its bursary programme to include two additional bursaries to support the next generation of engineering talent. The bursary programme has now been named The Tom Moody Programme for Engineering Talent, a reflection of the legacy left by Suretank's General Manager, Tom Moody, who died earlier this year. The expansion of the bursary programme marks Suretank's 30th anniversary in business. It follows the company's recent announcement that it is creating 80 new jobs in the Louth region, strengthening its commitment to investing in the community and driving further business growth. As demand for engineering talent in Ireland remains high, the programme will ensure Suretank continues to develop its own in-house engineering talent, serving a global customer base. The company's engineering department boasts 30 engineers with expertise in mechanical, electrical and structural engineering. The Tom Moody Programme for Engineering Talent will now become an annual partnership with Dundalk institute of Technology (DkIT). It is designed to support engineering students in their academic journey and includes the payment of college fees and expenses, along with paid work placements throughout the year in Suretank's cutting-edge facilities in Louth. Additionally, recipients receive guided mentorship to ensure they develop the practical skills and expertise necessary to thrive in their careers. This extension builds on the success of the company's first bursary, launched in October last year, and reflects Suretank's ongoing commitment to investing in the next generation of talent and supporting the local community. It comes in addition to Suretank's apprenticeship programme, which last year saw one of its apprentices, Jamie Kirwan, named Apprentice of the Year Award (Electrical) at the Generation Apprenticeship Ireland Awards. Applications are open to third-year students at Dundalk Institute of Technology studying for degrees in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, and Architectural Technology. Click here for more information and to apply. Dymphna Conlon, People & Organisation Development (P&OD) Manager said: "At Suretank, we are deeply committed to empowering the next generation of engineers while giving back to the community that has supported us for the last 30 years. Expanding our bursary programme reinforces our long-term investment in the local region, providing students with a valuable opportunity to gain a head start in their careers. "This initiative also honours the legacy of our colleague, Tom Moody, who was a strong believer in nurturing talent and his dedication and spirit left a lasting impact on all of us. By offering hands-on experience, mentorship, and the skills needed to succeed, these bursaries celebrate his memory in the most meaningful way - by supporting the future of engineering talent. More than just financial assistance, this is our ongoing commitment to people, progress, and the potential within our community." See more stories here.

My life before this adventure looked very different – constant mind chatter, body aches and pains, asthma, back and neck issues, low energy, waking up tired, overweight, low confidence, introverted and shy……..burnout…… Today and every day I have access to a toolkit of easy-to-use techniques and tools that nurture and create ease and joy in my life. I do have some crap days still – however, they don't spiral into something deeper that before would have lasted for days! …. ‘'Originally trained as an Architectural Technician I see the world differently to most people. Fiona feels so honoured to get to walk the Feng Shui journey with each and everyone who chooses to have their life and home, or their office, or their spaces Feng Shui-ed and that she is part of that. With nearly 20 years of experience in the building industry and then another 5 years in corporate where she experienced burnout Fiona discovered the tools and techniques of Feng Shui to be invaluable to having simplicity and a more meaningful life. Joanna expresses her journey's key point of ignition when she went on a retreat that Amanda Sophia facilitated and came to an awakening of self, to the decision of a continual process of healing. This conscious decision led to an upliftment in her life and a transformational shift in her perspective, leading to the work she does now.  Her work includes guiding souls to see past the pain and habits and lean into the divine guidance they crave, removing entities and performing extractions, activating and working with sacred stones and crystals to heal chakras and ancestral lines, and bringing the ultimate balance to the home, body, mind, and soul. She works intimately with the land, with photobiophysics, pendulums, dowsing techniques, and animals, all for the higher good of healing.  O'Kane's soul's purpose and life's work are aimed at embracing the souls who struggle, and who are in pain and inviting them to make the conscious decision to step away from the darkness and into the light. Since its inception, Genesis AEC – an award-winning architecture, engineering, and construction firm – has helped life sciences companies usher in the next generation of life-saving therapies, treatments, and technologies. Whether it's providing AE support for existing sites; commissioning, validation, and qualification for specific processes or equipment; or turnkey design-build solutions, their team blends sound science and technical expertise with quality and safety to deliver unparalleled results. Alan is their resident building envelope specialist, and when a building's envelope isn't working correctly, he is called to the rescue. From his experience, he believes building owners and project teams need more awareness of enclosure components (air/water control layers) so they can be more proactive. Understanding the root causes of water infiltration (roof leaks, failed sealants, failed glazing, joint assembly etc.) is critical and can help decrease operational costs over a building's lifespan, increase operational efficiency, and naturally prevent future water damage. Join Devon and Alan as they discuss some of his favorite project stories over the years, the most common causes for why building envelopes don't perform well, the need for more education between architects, contractors and the trades on how building components go together, Alan's favorite trends in architectural technology, and more! From finance to recreation, multiple industries leverage technology to improve operations and expand service. Meanwhile, architecture is a long standing craft that has developed over centuries keeping the same foundational purpose. This purpose could evolve during changing times such as now. What can architects do if there's a desire to work differently but no coherent strategy to move forward? Welcome to the second season of Architecture 5 10 20! I'm your host, Guy Geier, Managing Partner of FXCollaborative Architects in New York. Guests from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences related to the built environment will come to share their thought leadership. Our conversations will start with understanding how they arrived at what they're doing now. More importantly, we will focus on discussing their vision for the future, looking out 5, 10, and 20 years. Today, we're joined by Phil Bernstein, an expert in Architectural Technology and practice. He is currently associate dean and adjunct professor at the Yale School of Architecture, where he has taught courses in professional practice, project delivery, and technology since 1988. He was formerly a vice president at Autodesk and practiced architecture as a principal at Pelli Clarke and partners in New Haven. Listen to Phil speak about how the architectural industry can better leverage new and upcoming technologies. Phil explains how technology is usually dispersed through the architecture industry and how the process could be different. He also mentions how we can work together to address important issues, including building an equitable supply chain. Later on he shares why architects should consider work related to the larger context of health, safety, and welfare in the industry. Phil's research and thought leadership demonstrate that strategically harnessing tools and technology will be critical to the future of architectural practice. To move toward a positive vision for the future, we must not only integrate new technology into our practice, but we must also use it to address previously unanswered problems. In working together and thinking strategically about the field, we can prepare for a rise in automation and make strides toward issues such as transparency and equity in the building supply chain.   Time stamps: [01:17] - Phil Bernstein shares how he got interested in architectural technology. Rebecca was born and raised in a small town in upstate New York in an old farmhouse on her family's dairy farm. She spent much of her youth playing with legos, building forts and creating and renovating with her dad, which spurred her passion for architecture. From an early age that passion never faded and she went on to earn her Bachelor's degree in Architectural Technology. During college she traveled to Italy, an invaluable experience that sparked her interest in classic architecture. Following graduation Rebecca immediately found her home at a Syracuse firm specializing in historic architecture and preservation. She spent over ten years with that firm learning valuable skills and techniques. In the fall of 2016 Rebecca moved to Arizona to be near family. She began with Candelaria Design in November as a Job Captain and is still happily working away and has moved up the ranks to Team Director. What if you could remove any financial, social, and geographic obstacles contributing to the educational exclusion of a section of our society? Today's guest fought hard to turn the idea into reality and started the Architecture Is Free Foundation nonprofit. He brought together different groups of marginalized teachers and students to remove any barriers to architectural education for those without proper access to in-person educational resources. In this episode, we welcome Daniel Horowitz, Founder of Architecture Is Free Foundation. From learning Architectural Technology at the age of 49 to creating a community of passion-led free educators, Daniel's life journey would inspire you to view education from a broader lens. He talks to us about his innate belief in educational inclusion, understanding the essence of education, and overcoming the limitations of classical models of learning. You'll also learn who the Architecture Is Free Foundation is for, how you can contribute to its cause, and how it has progressed so far in its journey to making architectural education accessible to all. [11:15] Daniel talks about their primary pedagogical points of view on education -- "that students come to architecture with a lot of knowledge, they have their own knowledge of who they are, where they come from, their culture, their biases, also a keen sense of of the moment in time in which they exist in which the world exists, and that they're very keyed into some of the political questions and things that we want to hear about." His primary interest lays in 1/48 post-WW2 aircraft, but oddly, he’s been building 1/48 and 1/32 scale WW2 aircraft and 1/35 modern armour of late. He has been a member of IPMS Canada for almost 40 years, as well as a member of the chapters in Calgary, Ottawa and of course, here in London. He believes in taking an active role in the Chapter and has served as president of the London chapter a couple of times and chaired the South-Western Ontario Scale Model Expo committee on two occasions. He currently serves on the IPMS Canada Executive as the Chapter and Member Liaison. Prior to retiring in 2018, Kerry was a Professor in the Architectural Technology program at Fanshawe College for 29 years. What do the Kardashev Scale, Deiter Rams, Nipsey Hussle, and C# together? Today’s guest: Iddris Sandu.  At 23, the Ghanaian-born, Compton-raised architectural technologist has designed, programmed and built critical tech for the world’s corporate giants (Google, Boeing) and top apps and services (Uber, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, and Facebook). He engineered the world’s first smartstore with the late Nipsey Hussle (rest in power), and he’s the founder and owner of spatialLABS, EthosDNA, and Halt, not to mention a rising music video director and artist.  Over Part 1 and 2 of Iddris’ interview, we’ll use hip hop to break down computer programming and vertical integration, nature to understand technology and design, and engineering hacks that we can apply to our own lives. He’ll offer predictions for the future of digitalization and advice for self- and public education, and he’ll help us ditch the excuses that hold us back. Don’t worry, you’ll fall down the best rabbithole after this. Monica Truong, unschooling mom and self directed learning advocate. In this episode Monica "schools" me on child-led democratic education, self directed learning and creating a culture of respect, trust and sovereignty. Democratic and Self Directed Monica Truong was born in Vietnam and came to Canada with her family as a refugee at the age of 6. She has a BSc in Chemistry and likes to joke that she works with the "chemistry" of people, as she has never worked in her field of study. Monica taught English in Asia for 12 years and travelled to as many countries. When her oldest started school, Monica also decided to go back to school and received her diploma in Architectural Technology. In another twist of fate, she never worked in that field either and started homeschooling instead. Monica is learning and living with her husband and two daughters. Two years ago, she and two other moms, Sheri Daley and Sarah Atkinson, started the Chinook Free Learners Community Coop. Chinook Free Learners is a child-led, democratic learning centre inspired by Sudbury School and Agile Learning Centres. What To Listen For In This Episode The three reasons that led Monica to unschooling The beliefs that she had to let go of around what it means to be a good or "smart" student Why she is an advocate for self directed learning and democratic schooling What she tells her traditionally minded parents about unschooling and their democratic learning centre Self directed learning and how it works How a democratic, agile learning centre works Will kids learn if you don't teach them? What about math and reading? Won't kids make bad choices if they are given freedom? The biggest challenges for Chinook Free Learners and unschooling? Letting go of mom guilt Monica's hope for education and children? What advice would she give to a parent that's interested in unschooling or a democratic learning centre? Monica's hope for children is that they know they are powerful, that they are free and sovereign people and that they can make a difference in the world. I think that she is well on her way to making this a reality. Notable Quotes and Resources "I read a book called 'A Child Called It'....After reading it I came to the realization that our children will love us, no matter how awful we can be as parents and it made me want to do the best I can. Well actually, better than I can. Because I want to feel that I really deserve the love of my children." Monica Truong "I homeschool because the type of education that I think is best for my kids are not available in public school, not because schools are inherently evil. They, like any man-made innovation can be used for good or evil. Public schools serve a very practical, useful purpose-to take care of our children while we adults go about our work." Monica Truong "If unschooling was a religion, it would be Tao. "Trust Your Children. Nothing could be more simple, or more difficult because to trust children we must first learn to trust ourselves, and most of us were taught as children that we could not be trusted." John Holt "We worry about what our children will become tomorrow. We forget that they are someone today." Dr. Upitis is a recipient of the 2012 Queen’s Prizes for Excellence in Research. A leading international scholar in arts education and the relatively new field of educational architecture, she has a long record of successful and significant research. After researching innovative teaching techniques for music, and mathematics and science learning software, Dr. Upitis conducted a major study on how engagement with the arts supports teachers and improves learning. She served a six-year term as Research Co-director of the Royal Conservatory’s Learning Through the Arts Program, and her study was the first of its scope conducted in Canada and the largest of its type to date. Dr. Upitis also conducted ground-breaking research on the impact of school design on learning, achieving a Diploma in Architectural Technology in the process. Then, bringing together her previous work in the arts and digital spaces, she and her partners at the Royal Conservatory and Concordia University developed iSCORE, a unique and free online music tool that offers a wide range of features to teachers and students. The research partners are currently beginning a project to investigate the learning potential of iSCORE in North America that is being supported a SSHRC Partnership Grant worth nearly $2 million dollars, a Canada Foundation for Innovation Grant and additional funding (making the total nearly $4 million). If proven successful, iSCORE may be distributed throughout Europe and Asia (project news is available at iscorenews.com).

ABSTRACT: Disruptive technology relates to a technology that emerges from a non-traditional route that may evolve to supplant, challenge or ‘disrupt’ the original paradigm. Fabric formed concrete satisfies the criteria of DT, providing an entry to a technology that the conventional processes resist. Through a series of workshop studies and experiments the opportunities and the potential of the technology has been researched. Practical considerations such as such as repeatability, accuracy and precision are integral to the work. BIOGRAPHY: Remo Pedreschi holds the chair of Architectural Technology at the University of Edinburgh and is also Director of Research and Knowledge Exchange for the School of Arts, Culture Environment. He joined the University after a period in the construction industry. He is interested in the relationship between technology and design and was editor of the book series ‘The Engineer’s contribution to Contemporary Architecture’, to which he also contributed the monograph on the Uruguayan engineer, Eladio Dieste. He is currently working on novel systems for stone construction, steel and plywood composite systems and fabrics as formwork for concrete. The methodology often involves the interaction of formal research and student-led projects as a device for both detailed and exploratory study leading to full-scale prototype constructions.
