What's up, dudes? It's time for another Christmas-adjacent episode! This time, I've got the Saturday Morning Mafia with me to talk about “The Princess Bride!” Yep, it's Christmas time, and Columbo—erm, Peter Falk—reads his sick grandson a fantasy story. There's fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles... in other words, it doesn't sound too bad.   Westley the farm boy falls in love with Buttercup. When he goes off to seek fortune to marry her, his ship is lost at sea. Years pass, and Buttercup is now betrothed to Prince Humperdinck. Suddenly, she's kidnapped by a giant, a Spaniard fencer, and a criminal mastermind. A mysterious man in black eventually rescues and reclaims her, and reveals himself to be her Wesley.Unfortunately, it's all a plot to start a war, and Buttercup's murder will be the inciting scapegoat. Consequently, Westley is mostly killed, and the Spaniard and giant revive him with help from a disgraced Billy Crystal…I mean, Miracle Max. With their assets combined, they bluff their way into the castle, get revenge on all the baddies, and escape to live happily ever after. Oh, and there's some kissing in it too.Fred Savage? Yep. Andre the Giant? Got him. Masters of the Universe toys and Santas in the background! Inconceivable!! One change this year – due to ongoing accessibility issues on Ravelry, I'll hold this event both on and off Ravelry.  Last year we just used a  Google Form and that was hard for some folks, so this year there will be a chat thread and an FO thread on Rav, and for non-Rav users I'll have a google form where you can link to your IG/FB/Twitter post showing your FO Ravelry Link - click here to visit Ravelry. A crochet bag to hold dirty cleansing pads in my bathroom – also just made up a pattern. WIPs Recalibrate Top by Shana Lines using Nomad Yarn's hand dyed cotton/rayon Gelato yarn.  I'm using 6 colors, strawberry, orange, lemon, pistachio, blueberry and lavender.  This has been my stress knitting since Russia invaded Ukraine so I've gotten a LOT on this done. The right side is growing steadily. Earthrise, a new pattern of mine inspired by the famous Nasa photo when the astronauts first circled behind the moon and came around back towards earth and photographed the earth rising over the surface of the moon.  It's an awe-inspiring photo.   I'm working on the sample, it's a simple circular shawl, a great first circular shawl.  There's a little very easy lace but nothing complicated.  If you can YO and K2tog you can knit this easily.  I'm using silk and silkblend yarn that is so soft on my fingers but still affordable.  This pattern seems rather appropriate to be knitting right now My second Lotus Mandala using sparkly leftovers from the Priestess Coat I crocheted last year.  At the moment I plan to use all scraps of Lion Brand Shawl In A Ball.  I'm nearly to the armholes. As you Wish MKAL by Mary Annarella of Lyrical Knits.  This is a Princess Bride themed mystery knitalong that will eventually result in a rectangular shawl.  I'm nearly halfway through Clue 1. Winona by Brenda Castiel in handspun from Hipstrings.  This is an L-shaped shawl and I've reached the corner of the L which is worked like an applied-edging. You know, for as long as this podcast has been going on, we have never attempted to find a classic Valentine's Day book. It's a tricky proposition. We've done some pseudo-appropriate books like The Pigs' Wedding and The Marzipan Pig. But Betsy thought maybe we should try something love-related that is not hog-related. "It's about a human and it's about love . . . and he's balding. Three for three." This is a book that allows us to question what love truly is. Is love when people only appreciate you for what you can do for them? Or is it something more? Come join us for a journey through cheese and mustard sandwiches and brownies (not together). Stay, if only to hear how Kate reads the line, "I do believe somebody loves me after all," (you'll adore how she does it). Episode 17C-PTSD and Co-DependencyBoundaries and Limits, Limits and BoundariesFebruary 25, 2021Today I do my best to stay focused on my life as a Super Co-Dependent. I was born into co-dependency and literally had no choice but to become incredibly good at being co-dependent. Everybody's needs were more important than mine. I was fluent in phrases like, “Your wish is my command.” “Happy Wife, Happy Life” and my personal favorite from The Princess Bride, “As You Wish.” Simply put, co-dependency is the process of putting your needs beneath the needs of virtually everyone else on earth. If you are a good co-dependent, this is what you do. It is second nature and while you are slowly giving parts of yourself away you are under the delusion that you are righteous in you deeds. Co-dependents either die co-dependent, or they die knowing they took charge of their life and woke up from the hypnotic trance of co-dependency. They die knowing who they are. Here are some websites that speak to codependency treatment and the healing process. I hope the are helpful. Thank you so much for coming by and giving Out of My Mind in Costa Rica a listen.PsychCentral has a lot of really good information on their website and they spare no details. Detailed is good when it comes to co-dependency.https://psychcentral.com/lib/trauma-and-codependency#10I didn't talk about mindfulness and meditation, but here is a wonderful website where you can get some solid support for the us of mindfulness and meditation.https://thriveglobal.com/stories/4-mindfulness-meditations-to-break-your-addiction-to-codependent-relationships/Here's a short video from a young clinician, Siobhan whom I thought was wonderful. See for yourself. She provides top notch information in a very adorable way. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QEvM0UqjLtERecovery Direct in South Africa is a luxury treatment facility and I really liked a graph they used in their article on codependency. It's a great article and the programs look fantastic even though I will never be able to afford their programs. I hope they let me use their graph.https://www.recoverydirect.co.za/codependency/

This is it. The Princess Bride. As You Wish. Death cannot stop my true love for this movie. All it can do is delay it for 59 episodes.Verbal Diorama, inconceivably, goes downhill from here because there is no movie as perfect as one about fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love AND miracles...There's a shortage of perfect movies in the world. It would be a pity not to cover this one. From William Goldman's perfect novel, to the many attempts to get it made, to Rob Reiner's insistence it was the perfect movie for him, it truly is a tale of overcoming adversity, believing in yourself, fighting for want you want and, unironically, twue wuv!Because everyone involved loves this movie, and pretty much everyone who watches it loves it too. As a child, I would prefer to spend the first day of summer not out playing with my friends, but running to the library and leaving with a stack a foot-and-a-half high. It was always a dream to see my own work on those hallowed library shelves, or on sale at the bookstore, and Kyra Schaefer was the person to make it come true for the first time through the compilation book, When I Rise, I Thrive. ⁣ ⁣ Kyra's publishing company, As You Wish, has been a major force in the world, providing opportunities for hundreds of voices to be heard, often for the first time. The common thread between all of the tales of heartache, trauma, hope and triumph is this: the perseverance of the human heart. ⁣ ⁣ I'm so grateful to Kyra for her work, and the books that she will continue to bring into the world. She offered a few of her books in electronic form for free this week as a gift to a reeling community, and she has inspired me to do the same.⁣ ⁣ Starting Saturday, March 21,  I will be offering my book The ABCs of Awakening: A Dictionary for the Emerging Soul for free until March 28th (promo code: BNPHAVEN)⁣. ⁣ Bio: Kyra Schaefer is the founder of the independent publishing company called As You Wish Publishing, a business dedicated to making book publishing accessible for aspiring authors who want to publish solo books and participate in collaborative books. Kyra helps authors get their messages heard to bring hope-filled, real-life stories to the world. Her passion is to debunk the myth that writing is difficult and only available for a lucky chosen few. Kaytee and Meredith are ready to chat about all the books again this week. Hang on to your hats! You’ll hear our combined “bookish moment of the week”: the Patron discussion with Diane Chamberlain about her book, and then a bit of getting vulnerable about the technological snafu that resulted. Next, we discuss our current reads for the week. These are six books that are all VERY different in content and tone and all the ways that books can be different. It’s a great ride. Our Slow But Steady check in is short and sweet, just like you like it! For our deep dive this week, we are tackling the final category in the 2019 Reading Challenge: a book that is scary for some reason and we’re examining what makes us scared as readers. It might not be what you expect! Finally, this week, we are Pressing Books into Your Hands: a wonderful book that will make a favorite movie shine even more brightly and a beloved curmudgeon book with a young woman protagonist! Love the podcast, but I feel like this impeachment concept is still not being communicated accurately. It's pretty simple though...The House of Reps impeaches (the Senate does not). You can think of this part of the process sort of like a criminal indictment that yields formal charges. If the House passes impeachment articles (charges), the process is moved into the Senate where they try the case (which is presided over by the chief justice of the SCOTUS). There are several options the Senate can take, but the ultimate outcome is conviction and removal from office. This is how a president can be impeached but not convicted or removed. Basically all that means is that the House was really pissed off at the president, voted on some charges, but the Senate didn't do anything concrete about it. - “submitted by Evan Tishuk Shout out to Dan Lundberg and Chuck Grovenor for educating us further on the process of impeachment in the Know Nonsense Trivia Facebook group. GEOGRAPHY - What are the only two countries that totally surround other countries? Rate My Question “Borborygmus is the scientific name for what common bodily function?” - submitted by Proverbial Lightkeeper Dylan “Who was the former King of England, who abdicated the throne in 1936 due to the fact that he wanted to marry divorcee, American socialite Wallis Simpson?” - submitted by Ian Anderson Final Questions UNITS OF MEASUREMENT - Recognized by Google Earth, Google Calculator and the Amercian Heritage Dictionary, what non-standard humorous unit of measurement is approximately 5 foot 7 inches long and named after a student who used himself to measure the Harvard Bridge in 1958? Meredith and Kaytee are back from their short break between seasons to bring your more of the bookish goodness you’ve come to love. As well as some new fun stuff! First and foremost, we’ve got a new Bookshelf Thomasville coupon code for you: CURRENTLYLOVING will get you 10% off from our friends over there through the month of August! Enjoy, and be looking for a fantastic giveaway from them for our listeners this month as well. We’re also shouting out the first three women who couldn’t wait for us to officially roll out our Patreon account before they went and became our Bookish Friends! Thanks, ladies! You’ll hear a “bookish moment of the week” from each host: big kids cracking each other up while reading together, and giving book recommendations to a friend! Next, we discuss our current reads for the week. We’ve both got a large docket of titles to choose from after our break, so we had a hard time narrowing it down! You’ll notice a short new segment: Slow but Steady. Be sure to look for a post this weekend in which we ask you to chime in with your own Slow But Steady reads! If you’ve been looking at a book on your shelves for a long time, but you don’t want to commit to it as your “main” read, this is going to be JUST the segment for you. Let us know what you think! For our deep dive, we are reflecting on what our break was like for both of us. Was our reading different? What did we do to keep ourselves busy? Are we glad we took a break? Listen in for the answers! This week, we finish up with our first Belly Up to the Book Bar request from Sara Kilpatrick. Sara sent us a great list of titles, some of which pressed us out of our comfort zones. We can’t wait to hear what you think of our suggestions, or if you have more to add to Sara’s TBR pile! This episode is sponsored by As You Wish by Chelsea Sedoti and OwlCrate. Enter our Best of 2017 books giveaway! bookriot.com/bookriottop20   Questions 1. Hi girls! I love reading about people from different countries or people currently living in different countries and would love a recommendation! I'm trying to find something that isn’t about war or racism. Maybe something a little more lighthearted- if that exists. I love both fiction and nonfiction and am very open to translated works, poetry, plays, short story collections, etc. None of my book friends have been able to help, but I'm hoping you can :) Thank you! --Bianca   2. Hi Amanda & Jenn, I'm looking for a recommendation for my book club. We're all women ranging in age from mid-twenties to mid-sixties and, as individuals, read everything from literary fiction to romance to science fiction and fantasy. We've only been meeting for the past 6 months so we're still figuring out what types of books work best. Right now, we've read Where'd You Go Bernadette (which everyone really enjoyed), Small Great Things (most people liked), Elsie and Mairi Go to War (awful, didn't even finish), Exit West (another strong pick), When Dimple Met Rishi (good, but not substantial enough), and God: A Human History (haven't discussed yet, but from our group emails, I'm thinking it's a bit too academic). Contemporary fiction with interesting, strong female protagonists seems to be our sweet spot. We have The Mothers on our to-read list as well as A Gentleman in Moscow, My Cousin Rachel and The Summer Before the War. We read diversely, don't shy away from difficult/sensitive subjects, nonfiction is ok but we've read a decent amount lately, and prefer adult to YA. Thanks so much! --Megan   3. Hi there - I'll be moving to the Bay Area soon for a software engineering program, and I'm a little nervous about feeling lonely/missing home. I'd love some recommendations for: escapist/comforting reads and/or fiction with an awesome female lead and/or books set in San Francisco. I've been reading through the October Daye series by Seanan McGuire and have enjoyed them. I'm also planning to take Sourdough by Robin Sloan with me. I enjoy most sci-fi/fantasy and read a lot of literary fiction as well. Some of my favorite authors are Miriam Toews, Mary Doria Russell, Peter Heller and Connie Willis. Thanks for your help and for the show - this podcast has helped me find so many great books! --Rachel   4. What sci-fi books would you recommend to someone who loves Star Trek? I've of course read some of the novelizations, but I'd like to read some novels that are unconnected but have a similar enough feel to Star Trek. I love the space exploration, philosophy, and different alien races working together, but most of all I loved the idealized future. It seems every futuristic novel I read, we all live in a terrible future that is terrible, and OH LOOK AT HOW EVIL TECHNOLOGY IS. There are no words to describe how tired I am of that. Thanks in advanced guys. I can't wait to hear your recs. --Eliza   5. Hi, I recently listened to your podcast about biography recommendations and can't wait to check out Cleopatra. I would love some other great biographies/memoirs about women. I would prefer people of color or/not already widely famous people. For example, I loved Stolen Lives; Twenty Years in a Desert Jail by Malika Oufkir, Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi, Unbowed by Wangari Maathai, and Mennonite in a Little Black Dress by Rhoda Janzen. Thanks! --Carrie   6. I'm on a search for bisexual characters in literature (who actually call themselves bi- too often authors try to skirt around the word). I'm bisexual myself and I'm craving representation. I find so many gay and lesbian characters, but rarely bi. I don't mind if the character is in a same sex or opposite sex relationship, I would just really like to read about a bi character. Also, while I would love to see some bi women, I encounter bi women much more than I encounter bi men, so I would appreciate it if your suggestions had both genders (if that is at all possible). Thank you so much, and I absolutely adore the show. --Virginia   7. Hi Amanda and Jenn! I love listening to your podcast! Im wondering if you can recommend some books set in the Middle East. I recently read When the Moon is Low by Nadia Hashimi and loved it. I'd particularly like books told from the perspective of a female character(s). Thanks! --Becky   Books Discussed Sunshine by Robin McKinley A Darker Shade of Magic by VE Schwab The Rabbit Back Literature Society by Pasi Ilmari Jääskeläinen, translated by Lola Rogers The Woman Next Door by Yewande Omotoso (rec’d by Rebecca) White Oleander by Janet Fitch Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi Wallbanger by Alice Clayton A Dirty Job by Christopher Moore Shards of Honor by Lois McMaster Bujold Provenance by Ann Leckie Wild Swans by Jung Chang Mighty Be Our Powers by Leymah Gbowee A Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee 100 Must Read Bisexual Books post Swordspoint by Ellen Kushner Escape from Aleppo by N.H. He does this through focusing on the experience than the deliverable. Give them 10-15% more than what they are expecting. *3. Expand yourself creativity by expanding what you're learning.* The best way to grow yourself is to expand what you're taking in. Be open to new experiences, books, podcasts, etc. Be willing to take in more than you think because you can learn to distinguish what you does and doesn't apply to you. *Quotes* "Every professional does it different." - @Andr3wSal3 @LearnersPodcast Click to Tweet ( http://ctt.ec/frDP0 ) "We've built our audience through providing a platform for people and being ourselves." - @Andr3wSal3 @LearnersPodcast Click to Tweet ( http://ctt.ec/c6R78 ) "Deliver wow through the experience, not just the deliverable." - @Andr3wSal3 @LearnersPodcast Click to Tweet ( http://ctt.ec/6UgPW ) *New Episode Every Tuesday* *Join Us Every Tuesday* Thank you for listening to the Learner's Corner Podcast. In addition to reviewing the beers, we let Dennis talk about his blog, depression food, black truffles, and the term “foodie.” There’s also a cogent discussion of how experimentation could be impacting Pipeworks brand loyalty and the general overvaluation of barrel-aged beers. Then Dennis sings as Korean Lorde after sous-viding us a poached egg. This is real life.     Craig   1. As You Wish   2. Murderous   3. Over the Line   4. The Coqui   5.
