The end of April also marks the official end of the previous year's games calendar, as all of the Big 5 games industry awards shows (Golden Joysticks, The Game Awards, DICE, Game Developers' Choice, and the BAFTAs) have now been and gone. Which is useful because it means that here at Indieventure, we get to draw a line under 2024 at long last and turn our attentions firmly to the future of games released in 2025 – which, naturally, we'll be legally allowed to talk about until April 2026. It's the way of things. But before we wave a fond farewell to a year that actually ended four months ago – and don't you dare remind us that we're totally undeniably ⅓ of the way through 2025 already – we're wrapping things up here by ceremonially rolling up the red carpet Indieventure-style. If this isn't your first trip around the sun with us, you'll know that mostly means "Rebecca gets very excited about award show stats", but this year we have some insider insight as well, since Rachel actually appeared on the BBC as part of their BAFTA Games coverage! If industry accolades chat isn't your thing, don't worry, though, because we've also taken this opportunity to revisit some indie games from 2024 that we really wanted to cover but – mainly for reasons of there being so many of the things – didn't get around to until now. Stick around for belated chats about Anthology of the Killer, Arco, Arctic Eggs, Echo Point Nova, and Loco Motive, as well as brief swings by Lorelei and the Laser Eyes (again) and Vampire Therapist… plus more Blue Prince because we simply can't help ourselves. Last but not least, this episode's batch of hyperfixations sees Rebecca trying to reconcile the cognitive dissonance of falling hard for historical girl power pop opera Six: The Musical and sci-fi romance gacha game Love & Deepspace during the same two-week period; Liam confirming what we already suspected about Strange Scaffold's latest game, survival horror match-3 mashup Creepy Redneck Dinosaur Mansion 3 (it's really good!); and Rachel discovering that The Rehearsal: Season 2 is completely unlike The Rehearsal: Season 1 and makes for strange and compelling watching. Our music was written and performed by Ollie Newbury! Find him on Instagram at @newbsmusic. Meanwhile, you can find us at indieventurepodcast.co.uk or wherever you listen to podcasts. Don't forget that you can now join our dedicated Discord too, and be sure to check out our new Steam Curator page if you simply still can't get enough of us!
On this episode of the podcast, we discuss the end of the Sony SpiderMan Villianverse, Chris Evans potentially returning to the MCU, the nominees for the BAFTA Games Game Awards, and Ubisoft sunsetting XDefiant.

Episode Notes We were so incredibly pleased to be joined by Gabrielle Kent and Rhianna Pratchett, the co-authors of this new book in the Discworld library. Tiffany's story is one of our favorites, and having both more Tiffany and more witch stuff is just the best. Tiffany Aching's Guide to Being a Witch would make a great holiday present! We're not sure yet of a US release date, so consider buying it directly from The Discworld Emporium or Discworld.com (and if other things just sort of happen to fall into your shopping basket... well, blame the Feegles). If you want to check out the Mythical Creatures series Rhianna mentioned, keep an eye on the BBC Radio Four site as well as BBC Sounds. It looks like it starts airing December 18! Gabrielle Kent is the author of the Alfie Bloom and Knights and Bikes series. She collaborated on the Rani Reports series with her husband as Gabrielle and Satish Shewhorak. Gabrielle lives in the North East of England. She grew up in the 1980's drawing castles and dragons, reading comics, and playing videogames. In the summers, she ran wild with her brothers and cousins on her Granny's farm in Galway. Her first job was as a video-game artist working on games for PC, Playstation and XBox. She spent sixteen years as a university lecturer teaching students how to make videogames, and ran and hosted various games and animation festivals along the way. She has always loved exploring castles and in 2006 she visited Castle Coch in Wales. As she looked at a carving of The Fates over one of the fireplaces, an idea for a story crept into her head. When she got home she started typing the story of Alfie Bloom, the boy who inherited a castle and has written many more books since. Rhianna Pratchett has been a professional writer for several years. Having written numerous features and columns on games, movies and books and originally cutting her journalistic teeth on PC Zone magazine and The Guardian newspaper, Rhianna moved into script writing and narrative design in 2002. In 2007 her work on Heavenly Sword was nominated for a BAFTA and a year later she won a Writers' Guild of Great Britain 'Best Videogame Script' award for Overlord. Alongside writing for videogames, she has also authored the Tomb Raider: The Beginning comics with Dark Horse and the 6-part Mirror's Edge miniseries with DC Comics and several of her own short stories. Rhianna has contributed to various books on games narrative including Professional Techniques for Video Game Writing (Edited by: Wendy Despain) and Game Writing: Narrative Skills for Videogames (Edited by: Chris Bateman). She also works with the IGDA Writers' Special Interest Group, the Writers' Guild of Great Britain and BAFTA Games to help improve games narrative and the lot of games writers everywhere. Rhianna currently lives in London, with a couple of neurotic tabbies. True to British form, she drinks a lot of tea. Just over a year ago, an action adventure game about a little sword-and-shield wielding fox hit PC and XBox consoles. Halifax's Andrew Shouldice created Tunic, and it has won many awards and honours. He joins host Jeff Douglas to explain the game and his inspiration for it. But be careful! There may be spoilers.
This week we are very excited to chat with video game designer Sam Barlow! He's a writer and game designer who worked on Silent Hill: Origins and Silent Hill: Shattered Memories before going the indie route and releasing the award-winning and absolutely stunning games Her Story, Telling Lies and his latest game, the BAFTA Games-winning Immortality. We discuss how he went about creating these nonlinear story-focused mystery games, his love of genre, the research he did into found footage films and academic texts on police work and so much more. We also talk about working with acclaimed screenwriters Allan Scott (Don't Look Now) and Barry Gifford (Lost Highway) on Immortality and how they go about creating those "a ha!" moments in his games. Then we dig into the very weird French Star Wars-esqe animated movie Time Masters, Les Maîtres du temps/The Masters of Time (1982). Faceless angels, existential dread, children in danger, duplicitous princes, giant hornets and psychic aliens...this movie has everything. And Sam's story of existential dread seeing this as a kid was amazing. Immortality is available on Windows, Xbox (and Gamepass), Android, iOS and MacOS. If you have a Netflix subscription, you can also play the game through them. It's highly recommended. You can follow Sam on Twitter. The BAFTA Games Awards event has come and gone once again, and in its 18th year has celebrated the excellence of the last year of gaming with some top-notch titles being awarded. Notably, it was PlayStation and Housemarque's frantic sci-fi roguelike shooter Returnal that picked up the coveted ‘Best Game' award, but there were some great wins for our local Australian talent as well.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week on The Finger Guns Podcast we are joined by James Parker, head honcho of Ground Shatter (Rico, Skyscrappers)! We go deep into their exciting new game, deck-building fighter Fights In Tight Spaces and talk about Rossko and Sean's love of RICO, along with how Ground Shatter are dealing with developing a new game whilst self-isolating and most importantly. James' official ranking of the Fast and Furious franchise. We also discuss how a virus outbreak has officially delayed the sequel to the biggest game ever about a virus outbreak and most distressingly, the horrendous backlash from a community of 'gamers'. Ugh. The BAFTA Games Awards were also this week so we go into the winners and discuss if they were the worthy victors. What else would we have liked to have seen win? We discuss. Greg also talks playing and finishing Resident Evil 3 (you may have heard him mention it before?) and restarting Nier: Automata. Paul talks jumping back into Far Cry 5 and James shares his thoughts on Lair of the Clockwork God and Call of Duty's latest royale, Warzone. There's also hands-on impressions with In Other Waters, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 Remastered, Futurlab's Powerwash Simulator, Real Heroes Firefighters, The Complex, playing as Deadpool in Fortnite and Animal Crossing New Horizons. During his career he’s helped companies such as Lloyds Bank to manage large scale digital investments. He has also served on a number of boards as the global ambassador for BAFTA Games and South Central Scholars. In this in-depth conversation, he explains his focus to fund individuals who are solving hard problems such as using AI to eliminate animal testing, compares an investor-entrepreneur relationship to a “marriage” – narrowing 1,500 pitches down to seven to find the right fit – and argues that, by being there “during the dark days”, an investor offers more than just money.
