Kansas City Chiefs Kicker, Harrison Butker, recently gave a controversial commencement address at Benedictine College where he drew on some popular conservative talking points about Pride Month, Covid 19 policies, and the calling of women in the home. Phil, Skye, and Kaitlyn discuss the problems they had with the speech, as well as their frustrations with some of the criticism of the speech, and how Butker's views seem to have been influenced more by conservative politics than the historic Catholic position on these issues. Then, Kaitlyn sits down with Latasha Morrison to talk about her new book, "Brown Faces, White Spaces." They discuss the importance of understanding historical context to grasp the roots and impacts of systemic racism, and practical ways that churches and individuals can engage in the work of racial reconciliation. Plus, a megachurch in Texas tried to manipulate a traffic study for a stop light, and Phil thinks he has proof that News of the Butt is the best part of the podcast.   Holy Post Plus   0:00 - Intro   1:29 - Show Starts   2:26 - Theme Song   2:47 - Sponsor - Sundays Dog Food - Get 35% off your first order of Sundays. Joan Chittister, OSB, is an internationally known writer and lecturer and the executive director of Benetvision, a resource and research center for contemporary spirituality in Erie, Pennsylvania. A Benedictine Sister of Erie, Pennsylvania, she served as president of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious and of the Conference of American Benedictine Prioresses, and was prioress of the Benedictine Sisters of Erie for twelve years. Sister Joan received her doctorate from Pennsylvania State University in speech communications theory. She has authored sixty books and received numerous awards for her work on behalf of peace, justice, and women in church and in society. Her latest book, The Monastic Heart, was released September 21, 2021. This book carries the weight and wisdom of the monastic spiritual tradition into the twenty-first century. Sister Joan leans into Saint Benedict, who, as a young man in the sixth century, sought moral integrity in the face of an empire not by conquering or overpowering the empire but by simply living an ordinary life extraordinarily well. This same monastic mindset can help us grow in wisdom, equanimity, and strength of soul as we seek restoration and renewal both at home and in the world. At a time when people around the world are bearing witness to human frailty—and, simultaneously, the endurance of the human spirit—The Monastic Heart invites readers of all walks to welcome this end of certainty and embrace a new beginning of our faith. Without stepping foot in a monastery, we can become, like those before us, a deeper, freer self, a richer soul—and, as a result, a true monastic, so “that in all things God may be glorified.”

Dioceses in New Jersey, and several dioceses in upstate New York will lift the dispensation beginning on June 5, for the Solemnity of Corpus Christi. The International Society for Stem Cell Research has lifted a limitation on how long scientists can experiment on lab-grown embryos. For decades, researchers were prohibited from experimenting on lab-grown, human embryos, beyond 14 days of formation. Bioethicists have warned against the relaxation of the rule. A community of Benedictine nuns, known for inventing and distributing low-gluten Communion hosts, has seen their business decimated by the pandemic. The Benedictine Sisters of Perpetual Adoration in Missouri said their business in 2020 dropped by about 75%. The sisters said business is increasing as dioceses reinstate the Sunday Mass obligation, but they doubt demand will reach pre-pandemic levels. Today on the podcast we speak to the women who minister in today’s church. We, as women, lead some of the most critical aspects of church life….although we do not lead in some of the highest forms of responsibility and influence. This is not an episode that will debate whether this is right or wrong, but it is a challenge that women face in ministry, among other things.Enter…Sister Joan Chittister.Sister Joan Chittister is a Benedictine nun from the Benedictine Sisters of Erie, Pennsylvania. Sister Joan is an international lecturer on behalf of peace, human rights, women’s issues, justice, and contemporary culture.I find no better way to introduce Sister Joan than by our guest today, Jessie Bazan. Here are the words from the introduction of her book, “Dear Joan Chittister”:“Halfway through the inaugural Joan Chittister Institute for Contemporary Spirituality (JCICS), ten millennial Catholic women crammed onto a raised platform for a panel discussion on hopes, struggles, and the future of the church. We traveled from across the country—and even Australia—to learn from Joan Chittister and connect with other women asking similar life questions. The two weeks we spent with the Benedictine Sisters of Erie ignited our hearts—and the publication of this book.On the first day of the Institute, Joan mandated us to “speak our truths.” As we grappled with our truths and found the courage to speak them to ourselves and then to each other, we began to dream of offering them to you. This book, Dear Joan Chittister, is a collection of our truths.”(Chittister, Joan. Dear Joan Chittister: Conversations with Women in the Church. Twenty-Third Publications.)Today we talk to Jessie about “Dear Joan Chittister” and what we, as women in the church, can take as hope and inspiration from a lady like Joan.

Overall, I spent more than an hour talking with Sister Mary Marge and every part of our conversation carried the same amount of warmth and human connection that this excerpt does. You get the feeling from her that you would definitely want her to be your grade school teacher, because she would care about you whole-heartedly no matter who you are. I'm definitely not sure that I would have responded as gracefully as she did to the last minute change of plans that would send her to Minot, North Dakota for the winter!
