Today I want to introduce you to a podcast that I think you might enjoy. It's called “My History Can Beat Up Your Politics.” The host and creator of the show, Bruce Carlson, has been doing the podcast since 2006, making it one of the longest-running history podcasts in the world.  We've all heard the phrase, “Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” Many people in the world today are very ignorant about history and are totally unaware of events that shaped the world we live in today.  “My History Can Beat Up Your Politics” attempts to shine some light on events from the past which can help us understand the present.  After this, you can hear a full episode of the podcast. This episode is about a time in American history when a war was going on in Europe. Americans were donating weapons and equipment to one side while debating how much they should be involved.  Does any of that sound familiar? The year in question, of course, was 1941, not 2022.  We look at the past, knowing how it all turned out, but back in 1941, no one was sure what would happen. They weren't sure if the US was going to enter the war and, if so, how it would play out.  This makes a study of the year 1941 an important lens to look through to understand what is happening today.  So enjoy this full episode of “My History Can Beat Up Your Politics.” If you enjoy it and want to hear more, you can subscribe wherever you listen to this podcast.  Learn more about your ad choices.

This Fish Is The Master Of The Poignant Pause When listening to a well-practiced speaker, like during a lecture, a political event or during a favorite public radio show, you may notice they use pauses for dramatic effect.  This type of nuance in communication may seem distinctly human, but we're not the only species that takes advantage of pauses in speech to make a point. Enter the electric fish: It discharges electric pulses nearly constantly, which tells other fish basic identifying information. But when they want to alert other fish to something of high importance, they pause. These fish and their unique mode of communication has inspired researcher Bruce Carlson to study them for decades. This latest breakthrough in communication pauses sheds more light on the world of non-human communication, he tells SciFri producer Kathleen Davis.   Science Crimes: From Grave Robbers To An Icepick Surgeon Imagine a novel full of true crime thrillers, with just one twist: every crime in it was committed in the name of science. This is the premise of the new book The Icepick Surgeon, which covers the biggest scientific crimes in history, starting all the way back in Ancient Egypt. From Cleopatra to Thomas Edison, scientists have been responsible for some dastardly crimes throughout history. We're talking grave robbing, torture, murder, espionage, and more. All of these crimes were committed in the name of research. So how do scientists lose sight of their humanity as they conduct their experiments? And what science crimes may be in our future? Author Sam Kean joins Ira to talk about the book.     Lighting Design For Your Paleolithic Cave In the modern world, you have dozens of options for illuminating your home. There's floor lamps, table lamps, chandeliers, not to mention an overwhelming number of choices in light-bulbs. But in paleolithic times, once the sun went down, there were about three options for cave lighting—a fireplace, torches, and stone lamps that burned animal grease. In an article published in the academic journal PLOS One, a group of researchers described exploring a cave using reproductions of each type of flame. The goal was to collect data on the advantages, disadvantages, and optical properties of each type of light—both to better understand how cave artists may have worked, and to develop a 3D computer model that would let modern viewers experience cave paintings in a manner closer to that intended by ancient artists. Iñaki Intxaurbe, a student in the department of geology at the University of the Basque Country in Spain, talks about the research with SciFri's Charles Bergquist, explaining what researchers are learning about Paleolithic cave paintings.

Ira Pastor comments: A few episodes ago ideaXme hosted the University of Michigan’s Dr. Bruce Carlson. We spoke to him about the interesting topic of the importance of "substrate" in regenerative processes, for both the maintenance of normal tissue functions, and in the migration of cells or changes to tissue architecture that are part of healing processes. Substrate is broadly defined as the surface or material on, or from which, cells / tissues live, grow, or obtain nourishment, and have both biochemical, as well as biomechanical functions. Today, on ideaXme we are joined Dr. Gulden Camci-Unal, Ph.D. Assistant Professor, Department Chemical Engineering, Francis College of Engineering, UMass Lowell. Dr Camci-Unal received her Ph.D. in Chemistry at Iowa State University (USA) and her M.Sc. and B.Sc. degrees both in Chemical Engineering at Middle East Technical University (Turkey). Dr. Camci-Unal’s research is at the interface of biomaterials and bioengineering, including the design, synthesis, and characterization of functional biomaterials for applications in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, development of in vitro disease models for personalized medicine, as well as work in the area low-cost point of care diagnostics. Her work interestingly brings in another interesting theme that we’ve touched on past shows, that of biomimicry, and looking at structures in nature, such as eggshells, plant leaves, marine sponges, and origami paper(!), to help guide viable and cost-effective bioengineering strategies. The overarching goal of her research is to improve human health and quality of life and she has made important contributions in generation of novel engineered platforms for cardiac, cardiovascular and bone tissue engineering. Dr. Camci-Unal’s research and teaching achievements include various awards such as the Iowa State University Teaching Excellence Award, Wakonse Fellowship, NSF ADVANCE Travel Award, Chevron-Phillips Award, Procter & Gamble Fellowship, and finalist for BioFlux Innovation Award. Her research has resulted in dozens of published manuscripts and conference abstracts, and patent applications so far. Dr. Camci-Unal’s work has been published in high impact journals such as Advanced Materials, Nature Asia Materials, JACS, Biomaterials, Lab on a Chip, Soft Matter, and Tissue Engineering. She is an Editorial Board member of Scientific Reports (Nature Publishing Group), Journal of Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering, Regenerative Medicine Research, International Journal of Cardiovascular Research, International Journal of Bioprinting, and Journal of Materials Science and Chemical Engineering. On this episode we will hear from Dr. Camci-Unal about :  - Her background - how she developed an interest in science, in chemical engineering, and in regenerative medicine - An overview of her work in the area of novel bio-materials for regenerative medicine and the importance of inexpensive substrates for wide scale, cost effective use within the global population - An overview of the themes of "origami-inspired tissue engineering", and "organ-on-paper disease models" - Her future visions for clinical translation of such tools  - Current work in the field of low-cost point of care diagnostics for Covid-19. Episode 13: “William Howard Taft v. the World”. The Season 5 finale is here and we end our season on Ohio and the Presidency in a big way. Alex travels to Cincinnati, Ohio to bring you the story of William Howard Taft, the 27th President of the United States. The only person to be the Chief Executive and the Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court. We examine why Taft is an overlooked and underrated Commander in Chief in the early 20th Century. Alex speaks with Taft biographer, Jeffrey Rosen about the fascinating life and career of Will Taft. Rosen, the CEO of the National Constitution Center in Philiadelphia, is the author of the 2018 biography, William Howard Taft. An awesome book in the American Presidents Series, buy Jeffrey’s book here: https://us.macmillan.com/books/9780805069549 Or get the audiobook on Audible https://www.audible.com/pd/William-Howard-Taft-Audiobook/B07CTT1974. We discover that Harrison was a strong advocate for African American equality, an early environmentalist and a fantastic public speaker. He even stopped a pandemic as President before it could spread and kill Americans. Those qualities are compared to some of his failings as well. He was a one-term President and the country fell into a terrible depression shortly after he left the White House. Bruce rejoins us to discuss Glenn’s failed run at the Democratic nomination and the similarities between the crowded ’84 field and the two dozen Democratic candidates in 2020. Political analyst Kyle Kondik joins the show again to discuss the failed presidential campaign of Ohio Governor John Kasich in 2016. We look at the crazy 2016 Republican primary campaign and Kasich’s attempted run as the moderate Republican candidate vs. Donald Trump. The plan worked, but almost 250 years later the story of Washington crossing the Delaware might surprise you too. In this episode, RTN favorite Bruce Carlson of My History Can Beat Up Your Politics joins Bob & Ben for a conversation about one of the US's most recognized, yet little-known battles and how it affected the course of the Revolutionary War. Alex and Bruce travel through the first 25 years of the Cold War by chronicling the life of General Curtis E. Lemay from Columbus, Ohio. Lemay’s career was in the front row for Pearl Harbor, WWII in Europe, the firebombing of Tokyo, the dropping of the atomic bomb on Japan, the Berlin Airlift, the formation of the Air Force and Strategic Air Command, the Cuban Missile Crisis and the infamous U.S. election of 1968. We look at why “Bombs Away” Lemay’s celebrated life of service and militarism was overshadowed by the unforgivable decision to be the VP candidate for Gov. George Wallace’s ’68 presidential run. Cable news pundits tell you everything is “breaking news.” TV pundits discuss politics in a vacuum. But in nearly every case, the politics of today have long roots in history. This includes media celebrities winning elections by manipulating the press and lobbing gross insults (Huey Long in the 1920s), breakdowns in the relationship between the U.S. and Mexico (the 1840s Mexican-American War) and fears of presidential executive overreach (the 1780s with George Washington). In this episode I talk with Bruce Carlson, host of the My History Can Beat Up Your Politics podcast about how nearly every issue in U.S. politics has an analogue in the past. He uses history to elevate the discussion of today's politics.

On April 30, 1789, George Washington stood on the balcony of Federal Hall in New York City and took the first Presidential oath of office. The words he spoke that day were those written clearly in Article 2 of the new Constitution, which established the executive branch of the Federal Government. The rest of Article 2, however, is not so clear, and Washington became the first of many Presidents accused of unconstitutional behavior. But what makes one person a “strong president” and another guilty of “executive overreach?” Which Presidents have done the most to reshape the Presidency? And have we given some Presidents too much credit, while forgetting the important contributions of others? On our first Presidents Day Episode of The Road to Now, we get the answer to these questions and more in our conversation with one of our favorites- the host of “My History Can Beat Up Your Politics” podcast, Bruce Carlson.
