Today's episode is brought to you by Children's HopeChest, an organization that's rethinking global missions in all the right ways. Here's what I love about their model: They don't just step into a community and create long-term dependency. They invest in local leaders, build sustainable plans, and have a clear exit strategy—empowering people rather than creating a system where they always need outside help. As a pastor, I spent a long time looking for a global mission partner that actually helps without hurting, and HopeChest checks all the right boxes.Global mission work isn't optional for the Church—it's part of our calling. So if your church doesn't have a solid global partner yet (or if you're looking for one that actually works), it's time to get in the game. How? Start with a vision trip. Mark 11:22-24 NIVReading this scripture it would be easy to think that Jesus is offering us a ticket to Easy Street. We can send all of our problems into the sea; everything we want, we just ask and we get it. Q1: Does that idea line up with everything else that Jesus tells His disciples? What are some things he tells his disciples that don't agree with the Easy Street concept?Having faith is not about getting what you want, it's about following God and trusting Him to provide, to lead, to open doors, to fulfill His plan and purpose for your life. That doesn't mean we can't pray and ask God for things we need and want. Jesus tells us to pray for these things.Q2: What does it mean to “have faith”? What are some other things in life that we put faith in?Faith requires us to believe in someone outside of our 5 senses.Hebrews 11:1 NIVHebrews 11:3 NIVThe people listed in Hebrews 11 did just that, they believed in things they couldn't see.Hebrews 11:6 NIVQ3: Why is faith is essential to our relationship with God? Think about other relationships in your life, do they require faith as well?Jesus demonstrated faith, and pointed faith out, much more than He taught about it.Mark 11 - The fig treeMark 5 - Centurion/Woman w issueQ4: Does having faith mean that we don't deal with fear?Nehemiah 2:2-3 NIVNehemiah had to believe God:For the courage to approach the KingFor the confidence that he could rally the people to do the workFor protection against the people coming against themFor wisdom to see through the deception of his enemiesFor strength to complete the visionQ5: What things in your life do you need faith in God to overcome?Challenge:Pick 1 thing you struggle trusting God with and each day give it to God and ask him to give you strength to believe Him for the outcome.Thank you for listening to the One Loud Voice podcast. Resources mentioned in the episode: The Bible Museum YouVersion Bible AppThe Samaritans: A Biblical People ExhibitKey insights from the episode: When people hear the word ‘museum,' most of them think “boring, dusty, old.” When people hear the word ‘Bible,' what do they think? “Boring, dusty, old”….so what could possibly be more boring than The Museum of the Bible? It's like “boring squared.” The goal was to create a space to showcase the Bible in an engaging way. - Jeff KlohaSome positives that we should be focusing on with Bible reading statistics are that people who don't read the Bible are open to reading it; they just don't know how to get started. - Jeff Kloha YouVersion's findings indicate that more people are engaging during the week: Monday through Saturday than they were pre-COVID. - Jeff KlohaLet's be creative in how we are bringing God's Word to people. - Jeff KlohaThe key to all this, and it's always been this way, it's up to us as individual people to come alongside, to find out where people are at, and to help them find their way into the Bible. - Jeff KlohaIt has always been the people of God bringing the Word of God to others. - Jeff KlohaWhat really was the draw [to the job of chief curatorial officer] was to try to do something different. - Jeff KlohaBeginner readers of the Bible need to go to the Psalms. - Jeff KlohaThe phrase “kingdom of God” occurs 105 times in the gospels. - Jeff KlohaA non-negotiable is to love your neighbor. - Jeff KlohaDr. Jeff Kloha's Challenge: Pick up the Bible and read for seven days in a row. Dr. Kloha has given his life to help people understand God through the Bible. Did you know that studying Scripture is one of the 5 Keystone habits of Jesus? That's right. If you want to go deeper into leading yourself (and your church) to building the habits of Jesus, we'd love to introduce you to the 40-Day Being Challenge. Many Christians today aren't great at maintaining the habits of Jesus. Even the most “mature” Christians struggle with opening up in community, prioritizing prayer, and seeking regular solitude. But that doesn't have to be your story. The Being Challenge guides you through 40 days of practical, simple-to-understand challenges to help you learn, develop, and grow in the five keystone habits of Jesus. You can learn more about the challenge here! Some not-so-key insights: What could possibly be more boring than The Museum of the Bible? It's like “boring squared.”Being a chief curatorial officer does not mean Dr. Kloha goes around with a cowboy hat and bullwhip and collects artifacts.Professor Kloha's favorite classes to teach were the ones Zach and Chris were NOT in! (Just kidding!)One of Dr. Jeff Kloha's goals is to be less snarky than he was when he was a professor. As soon as he sees Zach and Chris, it all kicks back in. Proverbs 11:24 The world of the generous gets LARGER and LARGER; while the world of the stingy gets smaller and smaller. Myth #1: The CHURCH wants my MONEY. Myth #2: The church shouldn't TALK about MONEY. Biblical Money Stats: 2/3 parables dealt with handling money. 1 of 10 verses in the Gospels deal directly with money. 2300 verses in the Bible mention your finances! 5 times as many as prayer and faith. “If a person gets his attitude toward MONEY straight, it will help straighten out almost every other area in his life.”—Billy Graham Myth #3: Tithing is an OLD TESTAMENT law that is no longer APPLICABLE. TITHE—MA'ASER—a tenth TITHING: The principle of RETURNING to God the FIRST 10% of your income. Malachi 3:8-10 “Will a mere mortal rob God? Yet you rob me. “But you ask, ‘How are we robbing you?' “In tithes and offerings. You are under a curse—your whole nation—because you are robbing me. Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it. Matthew 23:23 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices—mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former. I Corinthians 16:2 On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with your income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will have to be made. WHY I TITHE 1. Tithing puts God FIRST in my life. Deuteronomy 14:23 The purpose of tithing is to teach you to always put God first in your lives. It takes FAITH to put God FIRST in your finances. 2. Tithing keeps me involved in the VISION of the CHURCH. I Chronicles 29:3 Moreover, because I have set my affection on the house of my God, I have given to the house of my God, over and above all that I have prepared for the holy house, my own special treasure of gold and silver: Matthew 6:21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. When I tithe, I move from a spectator to a PARTICIPATOR in what God is doing through His CHURCH. Take a 90 DAY tithing CHALLENGE Pick a PERCENTAGE and make it AUTOMATIC. 3. Tithing gives me ACCESS to supernatural BLESSING. Malachi 3:10 Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse…and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it. Deuteronomy 15:10 Give freely and spontaneously. Don't have a stingy heart. The way you handle matters like this triggers God, your God's, blessing in everything you do, all your work and ventures. When God is put FIRST, the rest is BLESSED! 2 Corinthians 9:6-7 Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 2 Corinthians 9:11 You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/coastalchurch/message

#181: How to Kill Your Productivity Frankenstein & Embrace Distraction

Lately, I've been murdering checkboxes. Not filling them in but erasing them entirely, like a 1920's gangster. You can call me the Al Capone of productivity. This all started when I did a podcast episode with my friend Kathy Palokoff. I like to structure my life with systems and lists, while she's more free-flowing—so we staged a “Battle Royale” to see who had the best daily routine.Normally, it should have been an easy win for me.I'm on month seven of a daily comic challenge and it's turned me into a content machine, but I've been feeling stuck for a couple of weeks now.Halfway through the podcast, Kathy said something interesting that made me rethink my attachment to systems and productivity in general…You have to accept your distractions.Problem: Micromanaging MyselfWhen it comes to productivity systems, I've tried them all. Each one felt perfect at first and I'd be super-focused for a few weeks, but then something would start to annoy me.Every system I tried was more distracting than the distractions it was supposed to prevent. To illustrate the problem, here's a quick summary of the four best tools I've used ranked from worst to best…1. Productivity Apps (F)What are they? Apps like Notion help you to organize your life by creating infinitely flexible “boards” and “databases.”Pros: flexible, easily searchable, access from anywhereCons: your phone is a distraction machine2. Bullet Journal (D-)What is it? A bullet journal is basically a regular journal that you spruce up with illustrations and symbols to track your goals and tasks.Pros: beautiful, portable, handwriting is good for learningCons: time-consuming, can't revise easily, must rewrite every day3. To-Do List (C)What is it? A to-do list is (well, you know) a little piece of paper that you can carry around with you to remind yourself about groceries, etc.Pros: cheap, portable, dead-simpleCons: scraps of paper everywhere, must rewrite every day4. Don't Break the Chain (B+)What is it? DBTT is Jerry Seinfeld's method of doing something every day and building a “chain” of days to motivate yourself not to quit.Pros: simple, builds consistencyCons: doesn't work for one-off tasks*FYI: There are other systems, like Kanban boards, Pomodoro, etc, but they all have similar pros and cons.Solution: Do Less, Get More DoneThe siren call of productivity is the belief that by doing more you're accomplishing more. But when I looked at all the lists and rules I was creating, almost none of them had any measurable impact on my life.Other than wasting my time and energy, of course. So, I started murdering checkboxes. Every morning, I wake up and remove one piece of my productivity Frankenstein by asking myself…How can I do less today? The Essential PartsIf you start taking your productivity system apart, you'll get to a point where you wonder How much structure can I remove before everything falls apart? The truth is, your productivity system only needs three parts…To-Dos: Use a whiteboard or pencil and paper (so you can revise things). Make seven columns for weekly tasks and seven columns for times of the day. Design your perfect day, then live it on repeat.Archive: This could be an app like Notion or simply your journal. Don't go nuts—just write a daily paragraph (for the sake of reflection) and store any ideas that you have for future reference.Challenge: Pick one thing to orbit around. Start a 365-day challenge and keep going after that. When things go south, return to your one thing.Throw Out Everything ElseThat still sounds like a Frankenstein, doesn't it? I guess you're right, but the real measure of a monster is not how many parts it has. It's how those parts combine (for good or evil).I used to spend hours every day micromanaging myself to death with goals and check-ins—all to prevent myself from getting “distracted.” But now I spend less than fifteen minutes a day on productivity.I accept my distractions as they are.I can live with that monster.

Bad Advice About Pornography

When it comes to parenting, people are full of advice--both good and bad. But what do you say when someone gives you bad parenting advice regarding pornography? Today we’re going to give you some talking points to handle those sometimes awkward situations!  We recently had a mind-boggling experience in an online parenting group. A mother was seeking advice regarding her 12-year-old who was using online pornography. In response, several other parents recommended that she give him porn magazines to help him fight the urge to look at online porn. Wait … what? (Related: Parenting, Porn and Not-So-Common Sense)  We realize bad parenting advice is not a new phenomenon. (Melody’s pediatrician actually recommended rubbing bourbon on her son’s gums when he was teething!) And people have their own ideas about a variety of parenting issues--from pacifiers to sleeping arrangements to curfews. But when it comes to pornography, bad advice can be very, very harmful to our children. If someone is giving you bad advice--for example, recommending that you show your child pornography--and telling you that it has great benefits, you might feel like we did in this situation: “This makes no sense!” But do you know how to articulate that? Here are some talking points to help you express yourself in those tricky situations: Porn is like a drug Porn exploits human beings Porn is an illusion  I. PORN IS LIKE A DRUG -When you are talking to other parents about pornography, you might want to focus on brain science. -Did you know that pornography has the same effect on the brain as hard drugs like heroine and cocaine? -Check out Pornography addiction: A Neuroscience perspective by Dr. Donald Hilton to learn more. -Learn about How Porn Changes the Brain at Fight the New Drug, an organization dedicated to educating teens and young adults on the dangers of pornography. -Porn is especially dangerous for kids because their brains are still developing, and they don’t have a fully functioning prefrontal cortex, the neural center for impulse control, problem solving, and executive functioning. Current research says this area of the brain is not fully developed until age 32! (The Dana Foundation, 2017) -The book Brainstorm by Dr. Siegel talks about how children are gathering and absorbing information adolescents are sorting information. -Our children’s brains are a like a garden that isn’t specialized yet, which makes them so much more vulnerable to weeds--like pornography! Wondering how to talk about healthy intimacy with your kids? Check out the books, 30 Days of Sex Talks for Ages 3 to 7; 30 Days of Sex Talks for Ages 8 to 11; and 30 Days of Sex Talks for Ages 12+ from Educate and Empower Kids.  II. PORN EXPLOITS HUMAN BEINGS -We need to be willing to draw a line in the sand. -When we take a stance against porn, we’re taking a moral stance against the exploitation of human beings -It is fundamentally wrong to commodify and sell other people. This is what pornography is. And it's not fair to our kids if we don't help them make that connection. -In the 1950’s Alfred Kinsey set out to educate the United States about sex, and Hugh Heffner volunteered to be his “leafleteer.” Judith Reisman’s work on Kinsey and Heffner should put some perspective on our popular culture attitudes regarding sexualization, objectification, and pornography. -A few years ago, we heard Ed Smart testify on Capitol Hill about his daughter’s kidnapping. Elizabeth Smart made a direct connection between her abductor using pornography and grooming her for rape, and talked about how the encounters were worse and more violent after he had viewed pornography. -We also came upon a study in which people were given quotes about women from convicted rapists and from men’s magazines. Then they asked the test subjects to label which came from which. Most could not distinguish the source. -Dr. Mary Ann Layden’s work points out that the degrading effects of pornography lead us to a place that “we even stop seeing each other as human.”  “There’s an interesting series of studies that actually highlights a bit of the phenomena of how this works. They were showing people just mildly sexualized pictures. They were men and women in swimsuits, men and women in their underwear, sort of relatively mild sexualized pictures and they showed them either upside right or upside down and looked at the processing in the brain, because it will display a phenomena of which part of your brain you’re using to process that picture that you see. What we see with men, when people look at men, and look at them in their swimsuits or in their underwear, they’re using the part of their brain that processes humans and human faces but when we look at women in their swimsuits and their underwear we use the part of our brain that processes tools and objects and when you process a woman as a tool or an object you use. The rules that we use when we deal with tools or objects is if it’s not doing its job then throw it away, get another one. So the feminists years ago said these men are treating women as sex objects and we thought that was a metaphor. It wasn’t a metaphor. It was an actual statement of reality, that they’re using the part of their brain which they use to process objects and things and there’s a consequence in the society when you start treating sex as a product and women as a thing.” (Mary Ann Layden in “Feminism’s self-defeating about-face on porn”)  Want more tips? Check out the book How to Talk to Your Kids About Pornography from Educate and Empower Kids.  III. PORN IS AN ILLUSION -Pornography teaches kids to have unrealistic ideas about sex. -In our “Smooch Around Your Kids” episode we talked about Dr. John Foubert’s research, in which he calls pornography the “perfect recipe for rape” -Pornography teaches our kids to believe lies like “pain is pleasure” -Pornography focuses on physical appearance, risky behavior, and exaggerated aspects of sex -Have you ever been to the circus and seen performers doing amazing things, like folding in half, or hanging by their hair--and doing it all with a smile? It’s not because they’re not in pain. It’s because they have trained themselves to smile in spite of the pain--to put on the makeup and the glittering clothes and the loud music and give a good show to distract you from the fact that they are in agony. It is an illusion. Pornography is based on the same concepts used in the circus. -Unfortunately our kids are learning these lies too well. Recently a juvenile was arrested for strangling his girlfriend while making out in a parked car. As it turns out, they had started kissing, and then he strangled her because he had seen it done in porn and thought that’s what she would want. In reality, he almost killed her, and ended up terrified and called 9-1-1 for help. -Melody has worked with betrayed wives for years. One woman who was sexually abused by her husband said that he used to act out things he had seen in pornography and then tell her, “but the girls in the porn liked it.” He could not process the fact that these girls were acting. It was fake. It is abuse. It does not feel good in real life. -We need to teach our children the truth. We need to “pull back the curtain of the magic show” and teach them the reality behind the illusions: -When we abuse people, it hurts! -Real people don’t look like that (enhanced, airbrushed, etc.) -Porn is not healthy sex, and healthy sex is not porn--these are two very different things -Article: Teaching Kids to Interpret Media Illusions  Challenge: Pick one talking point from this episode and share it on social media: 1) Porn is like a drug; 2) Porn exploits human beings; 2) Porn is an illusion. Educate another parent about why porn harms kids!

Learn how to create a safe place where you can talk to your kids about anything--even pornography! At Media Savvy Moms, we have 8 boys between the two of us, and at one time or another our kids have been obsessed with all things construction: trucks, videos, books, birthday parties, even a construction-truck theme park in New Jersey! When we think about difficult talks, we like to compare our “safe place” to a construction site. (This analogy actually came from Melody’s psychologist during her divorce!) This figurative “construction site” is a place where we can throw out ideas, dig deep, bring out heavy equipment, demolish stuff--even bust out the dynamite if needed! Nothing is off limits! What a great environment for open chats about pornography!    Here are 3 steps to help you create a safe place--a “construction site”--for difficult discussions with your kids: Build a foundation of trust Make your child the foreman Keep on truckin’   I. Build a Foundation of Trust -An awesome relationship with our kids is better/stronger/more reliable than any filter we can install. -If your child comes to you with an issue, pause your instincts to react, lecture, scold, or jump to conclusions. -”We have two ears and one mouth” so listen more than you talk! -Kids will go where they feel safe: Be the safe place and the first source of information when it comes to tough topics like pornography. -If you don’t teach your kids about pornography then who will? Kids on the bus/playground! Remember … we want the “Construction Site” to be in our HOME, not somewhere else--like a friend’s house or school or the playground. -Create bonding experiences through both positive and negative moments. -Use everyday opportunities like doing chores, driving, and bath time to teach. -The “Construction Site” can be physical place or just an attitude of openness in your family. -It’s never too early or too late--start NOW! [We talk about this in “Beware of the Rattlesnakes!”]   Check out Fortify, a program specifically designed to help teens and adults reach long-lasting freedom from pornography. (Free for teens!)   II. Make Your Child the Foreman -Put on your hard hat! It may get messy! But that’s ok. It’s a construction site. **Most important thing: No matter what your child brings up, Don’t panic! -Be aware of your body language and both verbal/nonverbal cues.   -Practice saying uncomfortable sex/pornography/anatomy words [We talk about this in “Get off the Fence.”] We are going to say those words in our construction site, and we’re going to be ok with it! -Something to consider: What if our kids are shy? We may need to introduce hard topics. -In our construction site we can: bring up hard topics & receive hard topics they bring to us   III. Keep on Truckin’ -This “safe place” is a perpetual construction site--never finished. The “porn talk” is never finished! -Put up the “under construction” sign and leave it up, so that kids know they can come and go anytime! -Build, dig, demolish, and rebuild--all ok! Remember the work crews in the Lego Movie that build all day and then demolish at the end of the day, give three cheers, and then start again the next day. Just go for it! Keep on truckin’. -We’re not aiming for a perfect building; there’s not a perfect master plan. -Maybe blueprints (great article, book, advice) will come and go. -Don’t get stressed--be flexible. -Just keep working together. Remember to be a team.   CHALLENGE: Pick a tough topic. Look for an opportunity in the next 3 days to tackle a subject that is challenging for you — and start building. If one doesn’t naturally come up, it’s time think outside the box and “create a moment.”   Thanks for listening! LAW 24: Play the Perfect Courtier Law 24 seems to be a combination of previous laws, and about taking stock and measuring your success so far, which makes it the perfect law to hit our midway point with. Jon and Dre focus on the laws within the law, and ponder their roles as courtiers What do high school students have in common with apes? Potentially more than you might realise. Jon and Dre dig into the art of flawless courtiership, and how that fits in with modern hierarchies. They discuss how understanding the rules of court can help you get ahead at work and life.  Learn how to give a terrible, generic compliment from Jon, hear why Dre is considering dressing like a Renaissance prince and join the pair as they explore how to thrive as a courtier.  This episode includes: "The perfect courtier thrives in world where everything revolves around power and political dexterity. He has mastered the art of indirection; he flatters yields to superiors and asserts power over others in the most oblique and graceful manner. Learn and apply the laws of courtiership and there will be no limit to how far you can rise in the court.” The impact of gracefulness and indirectness on being a good courtier, including key behaviours and strategies that you should always be employing. The difference between good courtiership and obsequious, over-the-top worship. How facts can be appropriated by another to strengthen their own opinion rather than changing to yours.  The important of a balance between effortlessness and hard work. How politeness can help shape people and events. Does sexuality affect how people view your sartorial choices? The importance of tailoring your speech and behaviour for the situation – why burping at the table would lead to cheers in one country and a scolding in another.  Beau Brummel’s fall from grace, and why you should never joke about appearances or taste. Alexander the Great vs Callithenes, or why you shouldn’t always speak your mind.  Mentioned in this episode:  Rupaul’s Drag Race  The ‘gay gene’ study  “It is a wise thing to be polite; consequently, it is a stupid thing to be rude. To make enemies by unnecessary and willful incivility, is just as insane a proceeding as to set your house on fire. For politeness is like a counter--an avowedly false coin, with which it is foolish to be stingy. A sensible man will be generous in the use of it.” - Arthur Schopenhauer Game of Shame – the Game of Thrones shame app  The Apprentice TV show  Challenge: Pick one the elements described that you do worst and give examples of where you go wrong. Email us at "hello AT voicesinthedark DOT world" with an example and we will give you back a ‘try this’ task to help you play the perfect courtier.  Join us as we continue our 48 Laws of Power review, exploring Robert Greene’s provocative and compelling book, in which he lays bare the history, practice, psychology, and philosophies of power that ultimately shape all human relations. Often seen as a handbook for the ‘modern Machiavelli’, we take a closer look, beyond the hyperbole, and discuss how understanding and implementing these Laws can actually enrich your life personally, professionally and spiritually. Jon and Dre aim to get to the heart of each of the Laws, grapple with their sometimes disturbingly amoral nature, and discuss what the Laws mean in everyday life (often revealing their own experiences – good and bad – when they’ve either observed or transgressed them).
