In this episode, the Senior Associate Dean for Enrollment Management at Columbia Business School explains why there isn't one right answer to the application essay - but there is a true answer.  [SHOW SUMMARY] Are you interested in an MBA that has the goal of preparing you for a career in innovation and entrepreneurship? With a record of excellence and a powerful alumni network? Columbia Business School is known for its cluster system of classes that fosters innovation amongst students. Sounds interesting? Listen to this episode where CBS' Senior Associate Dean for Enrollment Management provides insight on how to get accepted to its elite MBA programs.  An interview with Clare Norton, Columbia Business School's Senior Associate Dean for Enrollment Management. [Show Notes] Welcome to the 528th episode of Admissions Straight Talk. Thanks for joining me. Are you ready to apply to your dream MBA programs? Are you competitive at your target schools? Accepted's MBA admissions quiz can give you a quick reality check. Complete the quiz, and you'll not only get an assessment of your chances, but tips on how to improve them. Plus it's all free.  It gives me great pleasure to have for the first time on a Admissions Straight Talk, Clare Norton, Senior Associate Dean for Enrollment Management at Columbia Business School. After earning her bachelor's at Notre Dame in Indiana, Clare became a New Yorker through and through. She started her career as a trader with Citigroup and then moved into admissions first at Hunter College and then at CUNY and Columbia's Mailman School of Public Health. Along the way, she also earned her master's in higher education administration from Baruch College. She joined Columbia Business School in January as Senior Associate Dean for Enrollment Management. Congratulations on your new position and welcome, Clare,  to Admissions Straight Talk. [1:48] Thank you. Thanks for having me. I'm excited to be here. Can you provide an overview of Columbia's MBA program for listeners who may not be that familiar with it? [1:59] I think to me, the key point about the Columbia MBA program is actually the flexibility, is that we do really think of it as something that can be crafted and changed to meet the needs of individual students. I think that that's part of what makes it so exciting is the opportunity to understand about yourself, what your gaps are and what your strengths are, and to really craft an experience that is personalized to get you where you'd like to go. We, or Columbia, have several different kinds of entry points to that MBA.  So we have a full-time MBA entry in August. We have a full-time MBA entry in January, and then we also have a number of Executive MBA programs. EMBA programs on both a Friday-Saturday, a Saturday, and a global program that's a dual degree with London School of Business. So a lot of opportunities to come in and do the MBA. This year we have also created a brand new program called MBAxMS, which is a dual degree program with our School of Engineering. So our first cohort will start with us this August. What's new at Columbia Business School in terms of the program changes to the program, innovations to the program, you mentioned, the MBAxMS; anything else you'd like to highlight? [3:23] I'd like to share a little more, about XMS than what I said, which is that it's really a program that equips students with both the management skills and the science and technology core that should enable them to move seamlessly from classroom to product development to large scale innovation, and ultimately help create and grow companies and drive change. So it's really something that covers those core engineering courses in the curriculum on the areas of tough tech, applied science foundations, but also the essential business courses in leadership and strategy, finance, economics, marketing. So I think it's a really exciting program,

Interview with Nik Kumar, Columbia MBA Class of 2019 [Show Summary] Want to know what it’s like to be a Columbia MBA? How about what it’s like to be a police officer? Nik Kumar (CBS ’19) can answer those questions, and in this episode he shares the ins and outs of both. Listen in for the scoop! A Current Student's Perspective on Columbia Business School [Show Notes] Our guest today, Nik Kumar, earned his bachelor’s degree from Cornell in Industrial Labor Relations and Economics. He joined Bank of America/Merrill Lynch as an analyst in 2010, moved into PE in 2012, and became a CBS MBA student in January 2018. While working on Wall Street, he also served as a volunteer auxiliary police officer for the NYPD. Can you tell us about your background? Where you grew up? What you like to do for fun? [1:45] I grew up in the Dallas area, and by the time senior year of high school rolled around I really wanted to get away from Texas, so I went to Cornell and had a wonderful time there, enjoying the experience and being away from a big city. Many people I met there are still great friends to this day. When I graduated the allure of Wall Street was too much to pass up so I joined the investment banking program at Bank of America/Merrill Lynch as an analyst in their leveraged finance group. I then had the unique opportunity to join a smaller firm, Sound Harbor, focused on distressed debt, and then went to another larger firm, AEA Investors, where I was for 2.5 years before starting at Columbia. How did you get interested in becoming a volunteer police officer? [3:08] In looking back it started kind of with 9/11. As I grew older and saw the terrorist incidents I hated being unable to do anything about them. I thought about joining the military, going to West Point, but quickly learned I might not be the best fit to lead a platoon in Afghanistan or Iraq. I decided to pursue a more regular career path, but always had the desire to do some sort of service. When I found out about the NYPD program I knew I wanted to be a part of it. It is essentially a reserve police unit that operates during big events, like parades, visiting dignitaries, etc. It is a 12 hours/month commitment. Training is over 16 weeks, once a week at the police academy and includes training in self-defense, penal law, reacting to terrorist incidents, and military style training, so very different from anything I had ever done previously. People in my class were from very different backgrounds - students, mechanics, city workers – and it was an amazing way to meet people I wouldn’t otherwise have the chance to. We did not have guns, and our responsibility was mainly to observe and report, crowd control, etc. What experience as a police officer stands out for you? [6:28] New Year’s Eve always stood out. I did that for four years in Times Square. With so many people in such a tight area, my responsibility was to be on the lookout for anyone acting suspiciously and also crowd control – that people are safe, crowds don’t spill over barricades and stampede. It was our job to make sure it didn’t happen. You have an undergrad degree in business and extensive experience in investment banking and private equity. Other than the credential, why do you need an MBA? Are you actually learning much from your studies? [9:47] The decision to go back wasn’t easy. I spent a lot of time thinking about it. I spent a lot of time doing research, visiting schools in the Northeast, and talking to students. I also talked to a lot of people senior to me. The perspective I got was that you get out of it what you put into it. It is a major investment in time and money, but I went back because I knew I wanted to be an investor long term and I had only done one form of investing. I had also never taken marketing or operations or personal leadership, and so far it’s completely changed the way I think about investing and companies. If I were to go back to the exact job I was doing before school,

For a Broadway performer, a vocal cord injury can be devastating. In the third season premiere of Columbia Bizcast, the first-year MBA candidate talks about her love for theater and how she plans to use her MBA to become one of the first executive directors of color for a regional theater. Buster Creek Farm owns 160 acres but farm about 800 now, 100% Angus/Hereford beef cattle. They mainly lease and restore busted dairy farms for hay, clover, etc. and normally run a herd of about 200, soon to be twice that. Just like Kinderhook and Grazin’ Angus, they’re in the fairly rapid expansion mode. Roy Cowherd is from a 1700-acre beef cattle empire in the Bluegrass of Kentucky, all Angus and Hereford, same as at Buster Creek Farm. In between that life and this one, Roy did the Manhattan finance thing for 17 years. Berkeley, Columbia MBA, still a CPA (no stereotypes please!), etc., but his main thing is this life now. He’s also become quite the farm tax expert in the tri-county area. Fundamentally, Roy’s goals are a combination of efficient farming, a certain lifestyle, and brutal realism mixed in with excellent nature. This program has been sponsored by Hearst Ranch. “If you can marry your situation to someone who can take advantage of the tax benefits- that’s very important.” [5:33] “If the land is used for farming, property taxes are one quarter of what they normally are.” [6:23] — Roy Cowherd on Greenhorn Radio
