Her mother raised eleven children as a single parent, and Shawnee became the place that shaped her life. She attended Shawnee Elementary, Shawnee Junior High, and Shawnee High School. As a young girl, she even worked in the very building where Sacred Earth Community Garden now operates. Today, she has the privilege of giving back to the same community that invested in her. Velvet served over 20 years in the United States Army and retired as a Sergeant First Class. During her military career, she served in Administration, as an Inspector General, and in leadership positions that taught her organization, discipline, accountability, and how to care for people under pressure. Those experiences prepared her for the work she does today—leading youth, managing programs, solving problems, and building teams. Sacred Earth Community Garden was born during COVID in 2022. What started as an anti-violence initiative became something much bigger. Velvet realized young people don't simply need someone to tell them what not to do. They need: someone to believe in them, somewhere safe to belong, something meaningful to build, and someone willing to walk beside them. The garden became that place. The Mission is to use gardening as a tool to teach: A. Leadership, B. Responsibility, C. entrepreneurship, D. Food justice, E. Mental wellness, F. Conflict resolution, G. Environmental stewardship, and H. Community service. They're not just growing vegetables. They're growing healthy young people. Sacred Earth continues to grow because of incredible community support. As a way to celebrate the history of the country and participate in Studio B Art Gallery's "In Service" project, when the space to create a community garden--those gardens that historically served wartime soldiers and later local families--became available, Theresa Heist and co-hort Katie Emslie went to work. The episode explores the idea's origin, some history of Victory Gardens, the plan for the 2026 version, and an update about what's growing and will be harvested. She also serves as an adjunct faculty member at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Dr. Malik earned her MSc in Nutritional Sciences from the University of Toronto and a dual doctorate in Nutrition and Epidemiology from Harvard, where she also completed postdoctoral training.Her research focuses on dietary and lifestyle determinants of obesity and cardiometabolic diseases across diverse populations and life stages, with additional expertise in environmental sustainability and food systems. Using epidemiological studies, clinical trials, and evidence synthesis, she has published more than 150 peer-reviewed papers that have informed dietary guidelines and health policy internationally. The Knicks are playing in Game 3 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden tonight. The NYPD has ramped up security at MSG due to President Donald Trump attending the game. Watch parties outside of the venue have been canceled, and TSA-styled security checkpoints will be all around the Garden. Restaurants are also preparing for fans to watch the game at 8:30. Construction began for the 2nd Avenue Subway project. It will extend the Q line into Harlem and East Harlem. This comes after the Trump Administration reinstated funding for the project. Governor Hochul said the project is on track for service to begin in 2032. The World Cup kicks off its first game this Thursday with matches at the NYNJ Stadium on Saturday. Two years ago, Naomi, a neighborhood leader in the Del Monte Village area of Maryvale, connected with her Neighborhood Specialist, Rosario Espinoza, to get more information about the City's Gated Alley Program and other neighborhood improvement resources. A passionate gardener with an interest in growing food, Naomi soon began hosting gatherings in her yard where neighbors could discuss ideas to beautify and strengthen their community.
