Connor and Dylan are joined by James Scully (Oh, Mary!, Fire Island). Welcome to a brand new episode of DRAMA. The twins and James become fast friends, some might even say sisters, as James tunes in from his dressing room at the Lyceum Theatre. Basking in bisexual lighting, this Broadway star spills on his role as Mary's Teacher in Oh, Mary! James gushes over the brilliance of Cole Escola, his character's pants giving Fiyero's a run for its money, and the stars that have taken in this hysterical romp, including RuPaul, Julia Murney, and Rita Moreno. But first, it truly all began with James' star turn as a Porcupine in a Christmas pageant. He takes us through his iconic list of Ring of Keys moments, ranging from cast albums to Emma Thompson to Stanley Tucci and beyond. James is a sweet and humble boy who gives flowers throughout, especially to his brilliant partner Julio Torres. We cover his time filming “You” with Penn Badgley, Fire Island with his Oh, Mary! co-star Conrad Ricamora, and the Broadway rumor mill. In this episode, the boys pay special tribute to their hero, Gavin Creel, reflecting on his beautiful impact on them and the world. We had such a blast kiki-ing and laughing with James when the three of us really needed it, and maybe you will too. Charles Adrian also mentions her novel Persuasion (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persuasion_(novel)) and Lisa mentions the film When Harry Met Sally (1989) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098635/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1).   You can find out more about the British band Bros here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bros_(British_band). Debra Messing, for those who do not know, played the eponymous Grace in the series Will And Grace (1998-2006 and 2017-2020), which you can read about here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Will_%26_Grace.   With regard to LGBTQ+ museum spaces in the US and the UK: there are LGBTQ+ objects and archival materials at the National Museum of American History in Washington DC (https://americanhistory.si.edu/topics/lgbtq-history) and an aspiration to create a separate LGBTQ+ museum within the Smithsonian Institution at some point in the future (https://www.theartnewspaper.com/2022/10/05/smithsonian-lgbtq-museum-bills-introduced-mark-pocan). In London, meanwhile, there is now a dedicated LGBTQ+ museum called Queer Britain (https://queerbritain.org.uk/).   Next month, much to Lisa's disgust, we will watch The Holiday (2006) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0457939/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0).   We record these episodes over the internet. Hello and welcome back to Cinema Very Gay, Season 2! Jake and Kevin are back with some spicy takes about one of this summer's biggest queer hits, Fire Island (dir. Andrew Ahn 2022). Writer Joel Kim Booster has broken new cinematic rom-com ground by being the first to make a modern adaptation of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice...but this time, IT'S GAY. We follow the follies and faux-pas of Noah, played by Joel Kim Booster himself, and his queer Bennett counterparts. While trying to find a suitable partner for his friend Howie, played by Bowen Yang, Noah meets his own Mr. Darcy, the haughty and mysterious Will. With so much riding on the successful crafting of the adaptation, there is much to yearn for in the subject matter Fire Island tries to tackle. There are still plenty of laughs to be found and lots of great performances to latch onto, including Conrad Ricamora and Margaret Cho. Does Fire Island (film) actually hate Fire Island (place)? Does Noah have any redeeming qualities? Will Jake or Kevin ever get invited to a beachfront Fire Island party? This and more on our first episode of Season 2! You set, girl! We're also back with a brand spanking new miniseries that we're certain no other podcasters or film reviewers have thought to talk about before- queer-coding in Disney villains! Growing up in the Disney renaissance gave us fond memories of campy, sarcastic, and fabulous DIVAS of Disney villainy, so we're taking a prance down memory lane to catch up with the villains our young gay selves fell in love with. Why not start at the very beginning? The very first animated Disney classic, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1939), certainly goes down as a landmark achievement in filmmaking, but the Evil Queen SLAYS the HOUSE down mawmaw yes work as a campy iconic first villain. Who's the fairest of them all? CINEMA VERY GAY, HONEY.

I'ma Need More Wine Podcast

Happy Wine Wednesday! I'm back this week with Abbey and a very new special guest - Marcus - to discuss the delightful rom com, Fire Island. Our conversation kicks off with our thoughts on one of the things the writers did really well - intimacy.  We share our favorite romantically intimate scenes between Noah and Will, along with our favorite platonic intimate moment between Noah and Howie.  We discuss director Andrew Ahn's thoughts on the benefits of having an all queer cast when filming romantically intimate scenes like the beautifully shot rain scene.  Next, we get into one of my favorite themes - chosen family.  One of the delightful parts of Fire Island is its exploration of chosen family and intimate, but platonic bonds. Marcus and Abbey share their thoughts on how the writers  explored variances in the gay experience on Fire Island — a place considered by some as a haven for the LGBTQ+ community — as well as the variances in the kinds of relationships gay people value.Because Abbey has now joined me to discuss two properties known for featuring full frontal male nudity, I had to ask their thoughts on whether Fire Island could have benefitted from the same.  We talk replay value of Fire Island and whether or not we would like a sequel to the film.  As always, we close with our thirsty thoughts.  Thanks so much for listening! Friendly reminder - we drink, we know things, and we use adult language.  And be sure to give our amazing guest Abbey a follow over on Twitter and on Instagram.  You can find Marcus on Twitter here.Be sure to check out Abbey's amazing coverage of Fire Island over at The Hollywood Reporter here, here, and here.Follow us on Twitter and Instagram at @MoreWinePod! Send longer feedback to morewinepod@gmail.com.  Be sure to check out our prior episodes on Looking, Empire, Minx, Sons of Anarchy,  Abbott Elementary, Grand Crew,  Claws, True Blood, Orphan Black, The Walking Dead, Teen Wolf,  Euphoria, and The Sopranos.  And check out our episodes on iconic shows like Pose and Bob's Burgers.Support the show

HAPPY PRIDE LISTENERS!  Have you ever wondered what Pride & Prejudice would be like if it was set in an iconic gay village off of the South Shore of Long Island? Have you ever thought, "Hey what we need is a gorgeous three-part harmony arrangement of Sometimes by Britney Spears" or needed to know what Conrad Ricamora looked like doing the running man? FEAR NOT listeners! Because Joel Kim Booster, Bowen Yang and Andrew Ahn gave us everything we could have ever asked for with this gorgeous little film. Fire Island is heart wrenching, hilarious, and hopelessly romantic.  Daria even got to see the cast in person at the premiere in New York City while celebrating the start of Pride Month with NewFest. It is now firmly one of our favorite adaptations in Austenland and we spend nearly two hours gushing about how much we love it. Just warning you now! Joel Kim Booster, comedian, actor and writer of the just-released Pride and Prejudice-inspired gay romantic comedy Fire Island, joins Matt and Elizabeth this week for Daddy Issues! Joel, who also stars in the film alongside Saturday Night Live's Bowen Yang, tells us about what Jane Austen and Regency-era England has in common with the impenetrable wealth and whiteness of Fire Island, portraying gay culture and sex for a mass audience via a Fox Searchlight production, and casting Conrad Ricamora as a perfectly dickish yet lovable Darcy. Joel also talks about losing his father to Covid last year and the unrelenting writer's block and depression that settled in as he grieved. His perspective on the importance of creating a family of choice with supportive friends will resonate with anyone whose bio-families are disinterested or ambivalent about their careers, as Joel's were, despite his success. Later in the episode, it's on to discussing daddy issues in the news, including Johnny Depp's terrifying fans, Hunter Biden's sugar brother, Travis and Kourtney's homophobic wedding priest, Mark Wahlberg and Mel Gibson's new movie, and a celebration of a new kind of fish dad. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/tell-me-about-your-father/support

The Resident Rulebreakers

Play Episode Listen Later May 31, 2021 33:29

This week, we decided to talk about episode 4x09, "Doors Opening, Doors Closing" - as Kayla was still sick with long haul Covid when the episode originally aired - and we couldn't record the podcast. This podcast will be the last episode in season 4 that we discuss - as all the others have podcasts already. We were both reminded how mad we got after seeing this episode - and we didn't hold back either. - Episode 4x09 was written by Jen Klein & Joshua Troke, Directed by Li Lu - Our anger over Tina's parents' homophobia and heartbreak for Jake and Gregg not getting to adopt the baby they had put so much effort planning for.  We're so glad they got to adopt Sammie - we hope to see more of them in season 5 as they provide much needed LGBTQ+ representation that The Resident needs. Also, we talk about the anger this storyline made us feel - and how un-Christian it is to hate anyone. Kayla notes her background of being raised in deep south - in the bible belt - and in the Southern Baptist Church (though she's not religious anymore) - and notes the last thing that she was taught was to hate anyone. Irving and Jessica's wedding We feel let down by the writers with the #Feldmore wedding The wedding feels like it was dropped in last minute when the writers realized they promised another wedding - and were running out of room to have it in the show this season. We love Tasso and Jessica - and they deserved a better wedding than their characters got - especially since they've both been around since the pilot. However, we love the fact that they used the Georgia Aquarium on the show as a location. It's one of Kayla's favorite places in Atlanta. Will the fact that they are married ever come back up? Do better writers! Devon meets his match(maker) An Indian matchmaker named Myra arrives in the ER (due to texting and driving) and she zones in on Devon as a potential client. He's hesitant at first - but it turns out that Nadine is married and has had a baby in a very short amount of time. Devon agrees to one free match - which just happened to be Leela. We note why we don't like the Devon/Leela pairing again - hoping that the writers listen and give Leela some substance and growth before making her Devon's love interest if that is what they plan to do. Jessica coming in the room with Devon and Myra and telling Myra about Devon's relationship fails is our favorite scene of the episode. PSA of the episode: Don't text and drive - it's not worth your life - or getting injured. Mina makes her decision The gang tries everything to get Mina's visa renewed so she can stay, but she ultimately decides to go back to Nigeria to help her mother before she can be deported. AJ wants to go with her - but we know he stays behind in the next episode to care for his own mother.  Also, Shaunette asked to leave and this was the best option to write her out. Malcolm loves being on the show - and we are excited to see where the new season takes AJ.  We will miss the #Minator tension in the OR scenes though. #Kitdolph They are the cutest aren't they? We love how supportive they are of each other - and can't wait to see more of them! Kayla clears up her will they/won't they statement from last week's podcast. #CoNic They were in the background this episode - and we were ok with that. They don't need to be front and center every episode.  When did paint colors begin sounding like desserts? - PATREON Want to help us keep growing the podcast? Become a patron. This week, Brittany returns to step in for Camille. She and Kayla discuss everything about episode 4x02 of The Resident, titled "Mina's Kangaroo Court". - Note: We recorded this podcast episode on January 17, 2021 - two days before it aired on Fox. We got to do this because Fox put it up early on Hulu. It's a rare opportunity when we get to do this, so we are cherishing it. *When we have guests, sometimes their opinions don't align with ours.* - 4x02 was written by Peter Elkhoff & Marqui Jackson. Directed by Rob Corn. - In this podcast: - Mina plays judge, jury and executioner on Cain and we agree with her verdict. He doesn't need to be practicing medicine anymore. He's broken his hypocritic oath many times over.    - Mina tells the patient from 4x01 about Cain's unsavory past against AJ's wishes and the patient and his wife sue the hospital. We cheer Mina on for following her morals.    - AJ notes he and Cain have a brotherhood as the only black, male surgeons in the hospital - which is why he's so reluctant to go after Cain. Mina reminds AJ she is Nigerian and that her experience with racism is different, which is why she has no hesitation doing what she did. - Minator take a break from the sexual aspect of their relationship, but not the relationship. They are still an item. Also we loved how unemotional their barganing was about how many nights they would be apart. - Conic enjoy newlywed life after returning from their honeymoon in Key West, Florida. Conrad thinks married sex is better and Nic still is having trouble calling Conrad her husband.     - The big reveal of the episode - Conic are having a baby! They are getting their rainbow baby. We expect a not so easy pregnancy for Nic as she's had a miscarriage once before. We are going along for the ride to see how the show handles this plot. - Conrad and Devon treat a black, female congresswoman who is running in a special election for the governor of Georgia - who is also having an affair with her driver. A secret she doesn't want out there. However, Conrad assures her doctor/patient confidentiality prevents him from saying a word. It's a PSA from the writers to not lie to your doctor. - Devon is battling his grief over his dad and reveals to Conrad that his father could've survived had he been in a better hospital with more nurses.  - Logan Kim is toast!! He's gone, but Conrad leaves him with words of wisdom that Kayla notes sound a lot like something her dad once told her. - Kit is trying to get the CEO position - but Red Rock isn't too keen on replacing Kim due to the hospital's finances. - Bell does a life reassesment and goes to find his former step son (played by Conrad Ricamora). Their reunion is very cold, but Bell realizes he may have had more influence on Jake than he thought since he became a plastic surgeon. He was worried about Jake's ability to support himself since Jake is also an amatuer musician. - Also, Kitdolph. They are so cute encouraging each other. -  PATREON: Want to help us keep growing the podcast? Become a patron. Any dollar amount and cancel at anytime.
