Investors can become confused in today's challenging climate, and understandably so. It can be difficult for advisors and investors of all types and sizes. In this new season of Simple but Not Easy, we welcome Jonathan Linstra as your new host, along with two of Morningstar's investment chiefs, Dan Kemp and Marta Norton, who offer straight talk to help navigate this difficult environment. They also shed light on investment lessons and what they look for. We hope you enjoy the episode, from the team at Morningstar Wealth.
It's been a testing year for tech investors. To give this comment some context, take note that the Nasdaq 100 is down almost 20% this year, due largely to the slashed valuations in big tech. Tech start-ups are not immune from the downturn either, with closer scrutiny being applied to business models and balance sheets. Dan Kemp, global CIO at Morningstar Investment Management, joins The Wealthtech Show this week to help us make sense of it all. Will the downturn be here for long? Do investors need to take action? Are we really in a recession? And which tech companies will survive, or even thrive, in the next few years?
Dan Kemp is Morningstar's Global Chief Investment Officer. Having joined the firm back in 2014 as the Co-head of Investment Consulting and Portfolio Management for EMEA, Dan was promoted to the region's CIO the following year.Prior to Morningstar Dan was a founding partner at Albemarle Street Partners, responsible for client risk profiling, fund research, portfolio construction, and asset allocation. With a wealth of experience in devising investment strategies that seek long-term outperformance, Dan was the perfect guest to discuss how best to manage investment exposure amid the tragic invasion of Ukraine, and the resulting geopolitical crisis. We discuss the effect of the crisis so far on major global indices including the FTSE 100, the Hang Seng, and the S&P 500, before digging into Morningstar's outlook for each region. I finish by asking Dan where Morningstar believes Value is right now, and how to identify the intrinsic value of a company amid so much market noise. Dan Kemp, chief investment officer for EMEA at Morningstar Investment Management joins host Drew Carter to discuss who is susceptible to behavioral biases and Annie Duke's book, "Thinking in Bets."

Dan Kemp, chief investment officer for Europe, the Middle East and Africa for Morningstar Investment Management, said investors should beware of vivid, attention-grabbing forecasts because the ingredients that get your attention are not necessarily the most valid when it comes to the market. He noted that boring forecasts about the future looking mostly like the past tend to be more accurate. Also on the show, Buck Klintworth of Chase Investment Counsel said he expects the stock market to be flat to slightly down during the summer before going on a run, meaning that any near-term pullbacks should be buying opportunities. Matt Hougan of Bitwise Investment Management discusses his recent research showing that most Bitcoin trading statistics are wildly fake, with 85 percent of reported trades not being real, and Ernie Cecilia of Bryn Mawr Trust Co. talks stocks and ETFs in the Market Call

Welcome to the podcast from Morningstar UK, the leading provider of investment news, views and analysis. This week we analyse the impact of this week’s UK Budget Report and how to navigate falling global stock markets. Let’s start with the Budget. Whilst Phillip Hammond’s announcements of tax reductions and spending measures may boost Britain’s high street retailers, the positive impact on investors is likely to be limited says Morningstar Investment Management’s Dan Kemp. Now on to global markets. During times of uncertainty even the most experienced of fund managers get scared of volatile markets. Up next, Aberdeen Standard's Hugh Young explains his fears about a trade war are justified, but says investors should stay the course or they risk missing the recovery. Our next guest, Michele Hardeman, Head of Global Markets for Asia Pacific for State Street, explains to our Senior International Editor, Emma Wall, how falling emerging market currencies have impacted investor confidence. China shares have had their worst October in a decade, and the sell-off recently was the largest since January 2016 - is the fear warranted? And how does this impact the value of other emerging market countries? Morningstar Investment management’s Cyrique Bourbon is up next to explain So how do we go about finding value in troubled Emerging markets? Our next guest, T Rowe Price's Ernest Yeung says we should look for stocks which are uncorrelated to trade war fears and US central bank policies. FTSE and MSCI have announced plans to include more mainland China listed shares in their indices. Morningstar's Director of ETF Research in Asia, Jackie Choy, is up next to explain the impact this has for passive fund investors Most of the money in emerging market bond tracker funds and ETFs is linked to JP Morgan benchmarks, so the bank’s plans to include Gulf nations such Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, United Arab Emirates and Bahrain from January 2019 will have an impact on investors tracking those indexes explains Morningstar’s Jose Garcia Zarate. What are thematic ETF’S and why should we be wary of them? Robotics, ESG, artificial intelligence - thematic ETFs are growing in popularity. But investors should look before they leap says Morningstar's Kenneth Lamont And that’s the end of this edition. Welcome to the podcast from Morningstar UK, the leading provider of investment news, views and analysis. This week we’re focusing on the Impact a No Deal Brexit could have on the Markets. UK Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab and EU Chief Negotiator Michel Barnier are currently locked in crunch talks over the future of the Britain’s trade terms with the European Union. With Brussels admitting there is “no plan B” for a no-deal Brexit, the stakes couldn’t be higher. Should investors shun UK assets and seek shelter in US assets if there is a no deal Brexit. Or does the uncertainty create opportunities? Our first guest, Mike Coop from Morningstar Investment Management explains. What Impact Does Political Turmoil such as a no deal Brexit Have on Markets? Morningstar Investment Management's Dan Kemp is up next and considers how the latest Brexit fallout will affect portfolios. What Does Brexit Mean for Your Pension? Sterling weakness has been good for investors who own FTSE 100 stocks. But concerns are growing that Brexit is distracting politicians from other priorities. Senior International Editor for Morningstar, Emma Wall discusses this issue next. But if you are nervous about Brexit’s impact on UK stocks, there are plenty of global opportunities to choose from. In her latest monthly series Killik & Co's Rachel Winter shares three lesser known top stock picks within aerospace, fragrances and alternative energy. Does a Strong US Dollar Create Buying Opportunities in Asia? A strong US dollar and trade war rhetoric has meant Asian equities have suffered this year - but JPMorgan's Joanna Kwok says the outlook is positive Political crises, trade disputes and environmental disasters are leading investors to re-appraise their exposure to emerging markets assets and our very Dan Kemp returns to explain How to Successfully Navigate Emerging Market Investing Finally, our last guest today is Fidelity's Dhanajay Phadnis who explains to Emma that although Indian stocks look expensive, political reforms are creating sector-driven growth opportunities for investors. For instance, he holds a BA in Theology at Kings College in London - we spend quite a bit of time talking about how his non-business background has helped him in his investment career. Dan was also kind enough to share some of his productivity tricks, what he looks for when hiring a candidate for a job, his favorite behavioral finance books, and much more. Welcome to the podcast from Morningstar UK, the leading provider of independent investment research. This week we’re going to take a look at Passive investing. When Jack Bogle, founder of Vanguard Asset Management launched the first passive fund in 1975 he was called “un-American”. The financial industry was so against his plan to revolutionise the way that we invest, a campaign was mounted insinuating Bogle was unpatriotic and a fool. Fast forward three decades and new money invested in passive funds is growing at much faster pace than actively managed funds. In the US last month, investors pulled $18 billion out of active funds, but invested $49 billion into passive funds. The story is similar this side of the pond, the fastest growing part of the market is passively managed funds – and in particular those which are “smart”, or “strategic” and offer investors access to a certain slice of the market. But what exactly is a passive fund? And are they better than actively-manged funds in all circumstances? When should you opt for passive, and what role should an ETF play in your portfolio? Lets first go to Dan Kemp, Chief Investment Officer for Morningstar Investment Management who explains the benefits of using passive funds in an investment portfolio. Or focus on income? Or gain access to the whole market for a fee of just 0.2%? Senior editor for Morningstar Emma Wall and Passive fund Analyst Mornika Dutt are up next to discuss different ways to profit from an emerging market rally Lets go back to Christine Benz and Jack bogle who discuss the issue of risk and why Investors should not be tempted to take on too much of it in retirement. ETFs have grown in popularity as investors cotton on to the impact of cost on real returns - and now passive funds can be used to build a diversified a profitable portfolio.
