Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Finding Deception in Language Models, published by Esben Kran on August 20, 2024 on The AI Alignment Forum. This June, Apart Research and Apollo Research joined forces to host the Deception Detection Hackathon. Bringing together students, researchers, and engineers from around the world to tackle a pressing challenge in AI safety; preventing AI from deceiving humans and overseers. The hackathon took place both online and in multiple physical locations simultaneously. Marius Hobbhahn, the CEO of Apollo Research, kicked off the hackathon with a keynote talk about evaluating deception in AI with white-box and black-box methods. You can watch his talk here. We also had talks by Jacob Haimes, an Apart fellow, and Mikita Balesni, a research scientist at Apollo Research. This post details the top 8 projects, multiple of which are currently being developed further in Apart Lab. In total, we had 189 participants and 21 final entries. Sandbagging Detection through Model Degradation By Cam Tice, Philipp Alexander Kreer, Fedor Ryzhenkov, Nathan Helm-Burger, Prithviraj Singh Shahani The team introduced a new approach to detect AI sandbagging, a form of deception where an AI model strategically underperforms during evaluation to hide its true capabilities. The assumption behind their project is that sandbagging is a more complex task than showing the true capabilities. In the graph above, you can see how they gradually add noise to the model's parameters and evaluate the models during this process. Sandbagging models consistently improve in performance right before the noise level causes a normal model to lose the capability. It is a straightforward, inexpensive technique that doesn't require prior assumptions about how sandbagging is represented within the model. They successfully detected sandbagging behavior in two open-source LLMs: An 8B Llama 3 Instruct model and Phi 3 small instruct model. This approach offers a practical and accessible method for identifying potential deception in AI systems. Read the full project here. Detecting and Controlling Deceptive Representation in LLMs with Representational Engineering By Avyay M Casheekar, Kaushik Sanjay Prabhakar, Kanishk Rath, Sienka Dounia The team focused on detecting and mitigating sandbagging in AI models using recent methods for understanding activations. They fine-tuned a Llama 3 8B model on a custom dataset of deceptive and honest scenarios, then used Linear Artificial Tomography (LAT) scans to detect deceptive behaviors in the internal representations of the LLM. The team's technique not only identified deceptive behaviors, but also showed promise in mitigating them. Importantly, their approach demonstrated good generalization to out-of-distribution scenarios, suggesting its potential robustness in real-world applications. Read the full project here. Detecting Deception in GPT-3.5-turbo: A Metadata-Based Approach By Siddharth Reddy Bakkireddy, Rakesh Reddy Bakkireddy This team tackled the challenge of detecting deception in closed-source, black-box models like GPT-3.5-turbo. They investigated whether LLM API response metadata such as token count, response time, and tokens per second could be used to detect intentional deceptive behavior. The team analyzed 300 prompts and generated 1,200 responses from GPT-3.5-turbo, comparing the metadata of baseline and deceptive outputs. Their results revealed that deceptive outputs tend to have increased response times and altered token usage. This approach demonstrates that deception detection is possible without accessing a model's internal representation, opening up new avenues for monitoring and safeguarding AI systems, even when their inner workings are not accessible. Every fact can matter, but you wouldn't know it from the way some newsmakers act. It's tempting to ignore facts that don't support what you want to believe, but that's a logic crime called cherry picking. Dr. Sturg goes through several examples. Then she and then she and American Oversight's Katie Anthony talk about how FOIA and other records laws can help keep the government accountable. Your taxes pay for the data that the government keeps, and knowing what goes on can help everyone to save democracy. Finally, while a FOIA request about FDA information can take many months to get answered, an anonymous Twitter account can apparently get an answer straight from the top. AltFDA talks about a time when that happened related to concerns about inspections at a facility that makes a lot of a generic painkiller that's probably in your medicine cabinet right now. Michael Ruggiero is a retired law enforcement officer with 35 years of experience, 31 of which were spent with the Orange County Sheriff's Office in Orlando, Florida. During his tenure, Ruggiero was involved in investigating major cases related to Narcotics, Sex Crimes, Internal, and Persons. He spent 10 years in Homicide as a detective and supervisor.Ruggiero began training in Central Florida 20 years ago and has been teaching Interview and Interrogation for over 15 years in Advanced Training. In addition, he has been teaching courses in Death Investigations and Detecting Deception for the last 10 years. The Detecting Deception class, which he teaches to law enforcement officers around the U.S. through Public Agency Training Council (PATC.com), is a 2 ½ or 3-day class that focuses on the 3 ways people can be deceptive: writing, body language, and statement analysis (the words used).Ruggiero formed his own training company, Police Training Institute, several years ago, and is also an instructor for PATC.com. In 2022, he authored a book titled “Uncover the Truth,” which provides insight into the skills of body language and statement analysis. These tools are not just useful for police, but for anyone conducting investigations or even those who are interested in detecting when people are deceptive.Ruggiero is passionate about teaching and always strives to bring investigators to another level and enable them to utilize tools many didn't know were available. He is currently in the process of writing a follow-up book on conducting more effective Interviews and Interrogations. His ultimate goal is to influence the way in which investigations are conducted in the future, by training investigators to do their job at a higher level. Hosted on Acast. Steven Hassan, Ph.D. is a mental health professional and expert in undue influence tactics used by authoritarian leaders and destructive cults. His expertise includes harmful influence in cases of destructive religious and political cults, human trafficking, extremist and terrorist groups, one-on-one relationships, families, parental alienation, mini-cults, therapy and self-improvement groups, professional and institutional abuse, corporate and multi-level marketing programs, and harmful belief systems. He is the author of four books including Combating Cult Mind Control, Freedom of Mind, and The Cult of Trump. He is a translated author with books in 10 languages. His online video courses are Understanding Cults: The Basics and Understanding Cults: A Foundational Course for Clinicians. Dr. Hassan is the Founding Director of the Freedom of Mind Resource Center, which provides training, consulting, and support to individuals who are struggling to leave or recover from a cult and to families and organizations that are concerned about cult behaviors. He developed the BITE Model of Authoritarian Control to identify control tactics and the Influence Continuum Model to discern ethical from unethical influence. Dr. Hassan began helping people affected by undue influence after he was deprogrammed from the Moon cult in 1976 at age 22. His 45-plus years of experience give him a unique perspective on the damaging effects of undue influence and exploitation by destructive cults. He is a frequently requested speaker and media interviewee. Dr. Hassan holds a Master's Degree in Counseling Psychology from Cambridge College and a Doctorate in Organizational Development and Change from Fielding Graduate University School of Leadership Studies. Longtime colleagues Steven and Rachel, compare notes on what they have learned from their respective careers as mental health professionals specializing in cult education and recovery. Steve explains how his academic modeling aims to help policymakers better understand undue influence in order to prevent and prosecute the criminal actions of cult leaders. Rachel relays her experiences working with survivors of high control groups and how they relate to the behavior models created by Steve as well as pioneers such as Robert Lifton, and Margaret Singer. Together Rachel and Dr. Hassan discuss the need for the mental health industry to have a more comprehensive and nuanced understanding of the vulnerabilities and needs of cult survivors. Before You Go: Rachel examines Steve's idea of developing "pods of trust" as a support system to protect against undue influence. She goes on to explain ways to ensure the trustworthiness of people in your circle. In this episode, we talk about remote witness interviews and how to make the best of a bad situation using time-tested interrogation techniques and other methods. While things are starting to return to something resembling normal, our use of video conferencing as a business tool is here to stay. I’ve been fielding a lot of questions about use of body language and other techniques to try to limit a witness or deponent’s ability to be coached or misdirect the interviewer. With us today is a subject matter expert on interviewing and interrogation skills, Michael Bret Hood. Bret is the Founding Partner of 21st Century Learning & Consulting, LLC where he teaches leadership skills. He is also an adjunct professor of Corporate Governance and Ethics at University of Virginia.
According to recent research, facial expressions do not reveal our emotions, but instead, our intentions and social goals. It is possible to hide behind them, however? Can we learn to read body language to detect deception? In this podcast, I’ll discuss the work of prominent figures in the field, namely Eckman, Nevarro, Freud and Nietzsche to help explore this idea.

"No one can lie to you without your approval." -Pamela Meyer This episode is ROBUST. Seriously, I've don't think I've ever spent so long researching to put an episode together, and even with all of the various areas covered in this episode, it only scratches the surface of the science of detecting lies and deception. After ending my 9 year relationship when I found out on Christmas Eve that my partner had been unfaithful to me for our entire 9 years together with someone else, I started doing a deep dive into liespotting and how to determine when someone is lying. I didn't trust myself after years of ignoring my own intuition, and needed to better understand why and how people lie, and I was able to watch in real time as many of the tools I had learned helped me to be a better judge and see the lies for what they were as they were continuously told to me. Most of us are lied to anywhere between 10 - 200 times per DAY. Worse yet, the average adult can only detect a lie around 54% of the time. We might as well be flipping coins. And the most common lie often told? "Nothing's wrong, I'm fine." This is indicative of the massive mental health effects that lying can have, both for the person being lied to and for the person doing the lying. On a larger scale with more significant lies being told over the longer term, the lies start to mount and build on top of each other, and it's like piling bricks on to quicksand. It creates a vicious cycle that the liar has difficulty escaping, even if they wanted to, while simultaneously doing a great deal of damage to the people on the receiving end of the lies. "I'm not going to swear an oath I can't uphold. When enough people make false promises, words stop meaning anything. Then there are no more answers, only better and better lies." -Jon Snow, Game of Thrones: watch clip here Don't be fooled into thinking that you never lie, though. While human nature is to inherently trust, all of us lie regularly for one reason or another. Men and women sometimes differ in their reasons for lying, which I discuss on the episode, but the reasons can vary from protecting someone else's feelings to guarding ourselves either physically or emotionally, to win the admiration of others or to avoid some sort of punishment. “Compared to truth-tellers, liars showed lower cognitive complexity, used fewer self-references and other-references, and used more negative emotion words.” Reference Imagine going through life lying to everyone. Not only would that be utterly exhausting, which I explain further in the episode, but you would automatically assume everyone else was constantly lying to you as well, because that would be all you know. You're going to walk away from this episode with a significantly greater understanding of how we lie, why we lie, and most importantly, some tools to add to your toolbox to be able to figure out when someone is lying to you, either at a professional or a personal level. This goes way beyond the old, inaccurate myths around liars being unable to maintain eye contact (completely untrue) or that if someone folds their arms across their chest, they must be lying. No, we're going much deeper than that. And while this episode is a great way to get started, I still strongly recommend you do some of your own research, starting with Pamela Meyer's book Liespotting: Proven Techniques to Detect Deception. Some areas covered: The Q Test: A way of determining how you and other people process information in the world which can be very helpful when it comes to picking out liars The muscles in our face that are next to impossible to control and give us away when we lie Three main areas to watch closely to look for "clusters" that can indicate lying or deceptive behaviour Why lying can be addictive in a way similar to gambling The differences between pathology liars and "regular" liars How to look for "emotional leakage" Specific types of questions to ask that will reveal lies Some of the mental health effects of lying, both on the giving and receiving end How/why lying has formed from an evolutionary standpoint I'm really looking forward to hearing your feedback about this episode, be sure to share it with someone who needs to hear this! The Practical Prepper: A modern conversation about preparedness, survival and being self reliant
How do you know if your being lied to? What if your life depended on your ability to detect deception? Green Beret Ret. MSgt. Ken Roberts and I are taking a drive to the gun range and discussing how in his work he detects deception when the stakes are the highest and his life is on the line. Now let's take that back to our practical level as we see how we can apply that to common situations like negotiating a car sale or just understanding what really happened to your kid at school.
[YouTube Video Version: https://youtu.be/c6k6EStOH9Y] In this ruthlessly truthful episode, we confront some hard truths and the dangers of practicing escapism and ignorance. It's very rare that we speak on the problems within the Black community of America, but with the death of Grammy Nominee Nipsey Hussle, we're able to look at the state of my people, and why it's important to reclaim our health. It's apparent, with the measles outbreaks in New York, and Arizona's responses to unvaccinated children, why our health has become essential. These are ripples of the issues we face presently. Key global powers, like Russia and China, have found themselves contributing true humanitarian aid and supplies in the form of medicine to the people of Venezuela, but now, we're seeing what could eventually lead up to a conflict of some kind. As these global tensions are mounting, we're being hit with under-reported numbers of migrant waves on our southern border. We're having to ask hard questions in this edition, and it's not by my own choosing. As tensions begin to mount in what feels like a unilateral, 360 degree angle, we have to remember, cooler heads will prevail. It feels like we're in the eye of the storm, and if we're unable to keep our resolve, we're going to snap under the pressure. This episode isn't one for the lighthearted, but if you're with me, I got you. Join Dr. Carlos as he explores detecting deception with Stan Walters. Communication skills can make a big difference in whether people tell you the truth or not. Knowing when to ask the next question, the behaviors that signal when the whole story isn't being told and what questions to ask can help you cut through deception and lying so you can have confidence in your communications.Based on the same methods used by law enforcement professionals, but appropriate for everyday interactions, these skills and techniques can be applied in almost every situation:--hiring a nanny or household worker--working with an employee--talking with a service provider--dealing with a teenager--communicating in a romantic relationshipWithout threats or intimidation, Walters' strategies will improve relationships and communication by teaching how to spot a liar and, more importantly, how to get to the truth.Stan Walters is known as "The Lie Guy." He teaches courses in kinesic interviewing and interrogation to law enforcement officials throughout the country, and he does many radio interviews aimed at the general public. Walters has served as a Subject Matter Expert on Interview and Interrogation for Johns Hopkins University. He resides in Kentucky.
