Big ideas and big visions are great, but you've got to have people who know how to put them together. That's where the details come into play.” “It is so easy to go in, lose your cool, act with disrespect, yell, and squeak. A two-year-old can do that. But show me somebody who has the skill, the emotional intelligence, and the mental agility to use all of our tactics and traits—remain respectful, build that rapport, and let everything coming at you just flow right off of you.” “The art of effective communication is how you sound. Body language, your tone of voice, and your personality—all of that plays a role.” “Interrogation is just a conversation and a story. You have a conversation with an intent and an objective. You are communicating with another human being for a purpose.” “Every possible thing that comes up that can create negative thoughts—you've got to get rid of it, work through it, and move past it.” “When you're writing nonfiction, you have to keep that person in mind that you're writing to. But the easiest person to write to is your formerly stuck self, because you know that person intimately.” “Negotiation starts with a mindset, and that mindset is critical to success and getting what you want because that's what negotiation is.” “I can do it when there's nothing stopping me from doing anything. So why not?” “If you know someone's personality preferences, it's going to make your communication so much more effective.” “Your role as a leader is to create the next leader.” USEFUL RESOURCES: https://www.thecongruencygroup.com/ https://www.sectorintell.com/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/lena-sisco-8a31b451/  https://www.instagram.com/lenasisco11/  https://x.com/lenasisco https://www.facebook.com/lena.sisco https://www.facebook.com/lenasiscoTCG https://www.youtube.com/@therealinterrogationroom "My Secret to Breaking Terrorists: Detecting Deception & Rapport" - TEDx Talk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q9j8iJHSCbY&t=63s  You're Lying: Secrets From an Expert Military Interrogator to Spot the Lies and Get to the Truth (https://a.co/d/1kQm5eg) Marine Scout Snipers: True Stories From U.S. Marine Corp Snipers (https://a.co/d/94OrIqW) Honest Answers: Interview and Negotiation Skills to Get to the Truth (https://a.co/d/9g5VBK5)  CONNECT WITH JOHN Website - https://iamjohnhulen.com Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/johnhulen     Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/johnhulen     X - https://x.com/johnhulen     LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/johnhulen     YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCLX_NchE8lisC4NL2GciIWA     EPISODE CREDITS Intro and Outro music provided by Jeff Scheetz - https://jeffscheetz.com/

On this episode of the Scouting For Growth podcast, Sabine VdL talks to Terence Bennett, CEO of DreamFactory Software, brings with him a decade's worth of insights into cybersecurity, adversarial simulations, and API advancements. He's a veteran, both in serving his country and in protecting digital domains. Today, we're delving deep into Terence's illustrious career, the current cyber threat landscape, and the role of emerging technologies in shaping our digital future. KEY TAKEAWAYS If you spend enough time with computers I think you just figure out there's a whole other world in this application of computing and technology. I spent a lot of time in hacking forums online in the early 2000s, through that I got into early web development and learning the different ways to use the internet in ways it wasn't intended. 10 years later I came back around to cybersecurity as a professional. BEST MOMENTS‘RedTeaming is about simulating an adversary as they go about the process of trying to get into a network, computer, or facility.'‘As cybersecurity, as a field, has matured you'll find very specific signatures to different kinds of attackers in the way the actually go about doing that.'‘The challenges are, first and foremost, having enough people with the right skills to actually build APIs. Public facing APIs account for 14% of the total number of APIs that teams are buildings, and in some cases they account for 50-75% of a company's revenue.'‘Ransomware attacks are the 800lb gorilla in the room when it comes to threats… as we see organisations accelerating through digitisation/monetisation strategies, they're connecting more and more data and systems that used to be offline and you can't avoid that.' ABOUT THE GUESTTerence Bennett is the CEO of DreamFactory Software, a leader in API code automation based in Northern California. He has over 10 years of experience in cybersecurity, REST APIs, operations, and leadership. Previously, Bennett was the COO of Integrate.io and a member of Google's offensive security "RedTeam".  At Google, he helped craft realistic cybersecurity exercises to test the company's defences. He has deep expertise in cybersecurity, penetration testing, and adversarial simulation. Bennett served in the U.S. Navy for over 8 years as a Naval Intelligence Officer and Surface Warfare Officer.  He was deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and worked at the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS). He is a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) and holds a Bachelor's degree in Economics from the U.S. Naval Academy and a Master's degree from the U.S. Naval War College.  Bennett is passionate about giving back through public service. He serves on the Board of Directors for the American Red Cross - Northern California Coastal Region and the Board of Advisors for Shields & Stripes, assisting veterans with PTSD. As a leader in API automation, Bennett frequently speaks on how code automation is changing software development. A divorced couple forced to work together in the world of espionage.   When nuclear negotiations between the U.S. and Iran have reached a crisis point, the American Administration is determined to move ahead, but there are several stumbling blocks, not the least of which is the Iranian intelligence operative the CIA has hidden away in one of its safe houses. John and Meredith find themselves caught in the middle between Mossad, the CIA, and an Iranian hit squad!   In a genre known for strong leads, high stakes, political drama, and tense interpersonal relationships – how does MP stand out from the crowd? What real world event sparked The Handler series? And how does he mine his near-decade long service in the Navy for characters, plot, and true-to-life war games?   Find out this and more by joining Shaun (a professed geek of the thriller genre) as we dig into what makes John and Meredith tick and what techniques MP uses to overcome writers block.   MP Woodward - https://www.mpwoodward.com/   THE HANDLER - https://www.amazon.com/Handler-M-P-Woodward/dp/059344163X   DEAD DROP - https://bit.ly/3MxuM0o   Thank you to our sponsor: Tobacco Free Adagio Health: https://tobaccofree.adagiohealth.org/   The Scuttlebutt is now on Wreaths Across America Radio. I'm excited to welcome you to join in on a conversation with my friend & best-selling author, Walter McKinley. We talked about his childhood, prior military service, and the amazing things he is doing now. Walter is making a difference in the lives of others that are going through the pain he endured. Walter was abused as a child. He moved 14 times in 16 years and suffered tortuous abuse at the hands of every adult he came into contact with. Walt says," your history does not define your legacy." Life was hard for Walter but he refused to give up!  In tears, at the age of 16, he sat on the witness stand testifying against his father which was one of the many abusers that stole his childhood. Walt McKinley found the strength to fight for himself for the first time. In that life-changing moment, he made a promise to himself. He promised he would do whatever it took to become a warrior of his abuse and break the generational cycle forever.  During our one-hour conversation, sh*t got real! It was extremely hard to hold back the tears. His bravery moved me. I cannot believe he was able to push through so much adversity. Walt is a warrior! He is a retired Naval Intelligence Officer and former Fortune 500 Corporate Executive who's told his story in front of large crowds for over 25 years. His empowering and people-first leadership approach built high-performing organizations that achieved record results around the world. Walter says, “We are in challenging times and need strong voices who can teach people to unlock their full potential using real experiences.” Walt uses his journey of extreme trauma, fourteen childhood moves, homelessness, and attempted teen suicide, culminating with testifying in court against his father at 16. His comeback story reminds us that life is limitless.  This conversation is powerful and life-changing!  Enjoy.  Don't forget to subscribe to the show and leave and leave a review. Episode Summary:  Today, we speak with Walt McKinley, a generational trauma coach, motivational speaker, and author.  He is a retired Naval Intelligence Officer and former Fortune 500 Corporate Executive who made the pivot to become “a generational trauma coach focusing primarily on helping men learn how to break the generational cycle of abuse and fight to be the heroes of their own family.” Walt has spoken in front of large crowds on this topic now for over 25 years.  “Everything we do in life comes from our childhood: The good, the bad, and the indifferent. It all stems from the same place.”  There's no better way to illustrate that statement than through Walt's own journey to overcome generational trauma. It was a childhood that involved fourteen moves, extreme physical and emotional abuse, homelessness, and a suicide attempt in his teens. It all culminated with testifying in court against his father at 16.  Miraculously, Walt was able to turn his life around through the Grace of God and by finding it within him to forgive those who abused him throughout his formative years. He speaks on the moments that led to this dramatic transformation and why he was compelled to become a beacon of hope for other men who have gone through similar experiences.  Greg and Tyler also dive deep into their own challenges growing up as well as the ones they continually strive to overcome as grown men running a business and living with their own families.  Topics Discussed:  02:03 - An introduction to Walt McKinley  04:18 - How Walt overcame his own generational trauma  22:09 - Why Walt's stepfather was physically abusive  23:27 - Hurt people, hurt people  32:36 - Why abuse is abuse, no matter the timeframe  37:08 - The importance of trusting and accepting another's love  43:23 - Triggering yourself due to your sense of unworthiness  49:46 - How even “broken” people can help their loved ones  1:04:48 - Stop trying to run the world and just enjoy the journey  1:11:11 - What forgiveness looks like  1:19:22 - Embracing the gifts you've received from your trauma  1:22:38 - That last (lifelong) 25% of your journey  1:34:52 - Walt's recent conversation with his mother  1:38:37 - Walt's memoir “Monsters In My House”        Sponsors:  Skimmer  Lyon Financial  Leslie's    Connect with Guest:  Website  Instagram  Facebook  LinkedIn    Connect with Pool Chasers:  Website  Instagram  Facebook  Facebook Group  Twitter  YouTube  Patreon    Key Quotes from Episode:  I don't even consider it bravery. It's my calling. My calling is to share my story to help other people know they can overcome the pain and the trauma that they've been through and live an extremely abundant life. Not abundant monetarily, but abundant full of joy, great relationships, and everything else that comes with it.  Sometimes, we don't even know it's childhood trauma that's causing us to lash out or be angry or be frustrated. [...] It's unresolved. You have to deal with that baggage you're hanging onto and drop the pack in order to unlock an elevated version of yourself—a version of yourself you deserve, and that your immediate family—the people you love the most—deserve, too.  Nobody sets out to hurt anybody. Some people are so angry and desperate and in despair, that they just don't know how to control it. So, it wasn't like they hated Walt McKinley. They hated themselves, and they took it out on me.  Whether it's five minutes or 15 years of abuse, is irrelevant. Abuse is abuse.  Enjoy the small wins. Enjoy the journey. The destination isn't really what you're chasing. That's not the fulfillment. The fulfillment is in the day-to-day.  You don't get choked up talking about yourself. You get choked up talking about helping somebody.

From his service as a Naval Intelligence Officer to an MBA from the University of Chicago to becoming an investor in early-stage startups in healthcare tech, frontier tech, logistics, and marketplaces, Sherman Williams has had an interesting career. Now he's also helping other U.S. Service Academy (USNA, USMA, USAFA, USCGA and USMMA) grads to invest as well. Many veterans want to get into entrepreneurship, but don't know how to access a network to help them learn and grow. The Academy Investor Network invests in veteran-led startups (as well as civilian-led startups) that focus on “dual-use technology,” or tech that has both commercial and government purposes. Or as Sherman puts it, “technologies that help make our country safer, operate more efficiently, and have a strong commercial use case.”Listen for Sherman's take on how technologies like this can have both civilian and military use cases, and how veterans can thrive in entrepreneurship. Oh, and definitely listen for David and Sherman's brief but delightful discussion of reggae. Follow Sherman Williams on Twitter @vc_sherman See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Their solution was to commission a new series set in Hawaii about a former Naval Intelligence Officer turned Private Investigator. After a glorious 8 season run the show ended but has recently been mentioned as a  series that will get a reboot. Before this reboot comes out I wanted to go through every episode of the original Magnum, P.I..
