On this year-end episode, Shane talks with Australian pop-singer Liam Cooper about their shared interest in the backstory of Billy Joel's song, Piano Man. Liam is the creator and frontman of a show called King of the Keys, which features the music of Billy Joel, Elton John, Paul McCartney and others. Earlier this year, Liam had plans to shoot a music video featuring the original piano used by Billy Joel at The Executive Room back in 1973—or so he thought. Shane's research has led him to re-evaluate things.SHOW NOTESRelated Episodes & ArticlesThe Pilot Episode, Humble Skeptic #01New Evidence for The Executive Room, Humble Skeptic #55Evidential Reasoning, Humble Skeptic #56Dealing with Discrepancies, Humble Skeptic #57Is My Dad One of the Characters in Piano Man? The word “totalitarianism” describes a political system in which the state has total authority over every aspect of life. In regimes of this kind, external conformity is just the first step—what they really want is your soul. According to Rod Dreher, we're now seeing the rise of a new “soft totalitarianism” which is closer to Huxley's Brave New World, than Orwell's 1984. In soft totalitarianism, conformity is achieved by manipulating access to things like status and comfort, often by means of a social credit system. On this program, Shane Rosenthal talks with Rod Dreher about these and other disturbing trends that he outlines in his bestselling book, Live Not By Lies, which also happens to be the subject of a forthcoming documentary series.SHOW NOTESResources by Rod DreherLive Not By Lies (book)The Axis of the Human Heart (essay)Exclude the Excluders! Being adept at discerning people's true thoughts and intentions is a valuable skill to have. Knowing when someone is deceiving you can protect your finances, your professional interests, and your loved ones. Here to teach us some of the elements of this skill is Dr. David Lieberman, who's a psychotherapist, a consultant to the military and other intelligence and defense agencies, and the author of Mindreader: The New Science of Deciphering What People Really Think, What They Really Want, and Who They Really Are. Today on the show, David explains why verbal cues offer a better window into people's minds than body language, and the clues to look for in both spoken and written speech that can indicate whether someone is honest or deceptive. We also get into how to detect whether someone is mentally healthy or not, including the signs that you're dealing with a psychopath.Resources Related to the PodcastDavid's last appearance on the show: Episode #489 — How to Get a Handle on Your AngerThe Secret Life of Pronouns by James PennebakerAoM Podcast #364: How to Know When Someone Is Lying (From a Former CIA Officer)Ego syntonic and dystonicAoM Podcast #769: The New Science of NarcissismConnect With David LiebermanDavid on LinkedInDavid on Instagram

Dr. Rachel Botsman defines trust as "a confident relationship with the unknown" and I thought that was such a beautiful way of phrasing it. Trust will provide growth, which requires patience, uncertainty, vulnerability, and looking inward with the understanding that you don’t know what’s next in the abyss. Today we're talking: Giving people close to us the benefit of the doubt While also learning how to become more discerning with our trust The ways trust can be both built and torn down in the smallest ways that we may not even notice unless we pay close attention What happens when we're out of integrity in any area of our lives an dhow it shows up elsewhere Figuring out how to trust yourself first and foremost, regardless of circumstances How you can feel trust in the body Take a listen! Not all lies are scams, but everyone lies, even if it's only about someone’s birthday gift. Liars give out both verbal and nonverbal cues, but how do you know what they are? Listen to this episode to learn how to spot a lie. Today’s guest is Pamela Meyer. Pamela is certified fraud examiner, international speaker, entrepreneur, and the author of Lie Spotting: Proven Techniques to Detect Deception. Her TEDtalk “How to Spot a Liar” is one of the 15 most popular TEDtalks of all time with over 30 million views. She has been featured on NPR, CNN, ABC, Forbes, The Washington Post, and The New York Post, and she writes regularly for The Huffington Post. Show Notes: [1:03] - Pamela’s background is in business and for many years she was in media. She had developed some websites and sold them. She shared how a Harvard Business School reunion sparked her interest in deception. [2:41] - When Pamela returned home from the reunion, she realized that there was a huge interest in the topic of deception but that the information on it was inaccessible. [3:31] - Pamela shares the story that is also featured in her book Lie Spotting, about an assistant she had many years ago. [4:56] - Just because it is taught in the CIA, doesn’t mean it can’t be learned by the public. [5:23] - The myth of lie detection is that it is simple. It is actually quite complex. [6:02] - Pamela shares another myth regarding lie detection through the eyes. [7:10] - When someone is lying, sometimes people will try to overcompensate their body language to appear truthful. [8:20] - What’s important with lie detection is starting with baselining. One indicator doesn’t mean anything and Pamela describes why. [10:02] - If you know someone very well and you notice that something is a little off, it could be an indicator for lying. Pamela explains that someone trained in detection will be able to note exactly what is off. [10:52] - Professionals can usually determine a baseline for someone and detect lies within a half hour, 15 minutes, or even 5 minutes. [11:56] - If you are having a difficult conversation, what you’re looking for are energetic changes. [12:53] - Pamela begins sharing a good starting point called BASIC in learning detection which is a 5 step process. This is different from the advanced masterclass she offers. [13:03] - The first step is B for Baselining. A is for Ask open ended questions. [14:07] - Be warm and be in an environment that is free from distraction. Sit in a non-threatening way and make the person feel comfortable. [15:47] - Be authentic with building rapport with someone. Prepare for harder conversations ahead of time. [17:39] - The biggest issue with cues to verbal and nonverbal deceit is what we call Cognitive Load. When you’re trying to think what to say, act composed, appear spontaneous, if you are lying you leak verbal and nonverbal cues. [19:03] - Pamela shares some nonverbal cues that someone who is lying could adopt when in conversation with you. [20:37] - The verbal cues in a difficult conversation could be pushing the main point of conversation off to the end. Someone who is truthful will typically tell a story with a beginning, middle, and an end. [21:29] - Pamela describes some verbal cues that could mean deception. [22:40] - These methods are not weapons. They’re just techniques to help you get to the truth. Deception isn’t always indicative of something bad. [24:22] - Everyone lies. Although the term “lying” has a negative connotation. [25:01] - S in BASIC is “Study the clusters.” Look at the cues and study them. I is for “Intuiting the gaps.” Keep your instincts in mind and identify and fill in the holes. [26:37] - Pamela describes behavior gaps and emotion gaps. What is the person saying and are they flashing contradictory facial expressions or body movements? [28:10] - These indicators are not to point fingers and call the person a liar. They are to give you more information and give you guidance on the harder questions to ask. [28:32] - C is to confirm. After you’ve done everything prior, you need to now ask the questions that will confirm your thoughts of deceit. These questions often indicate that you have some information that you might not have. [30:18] - Pamela gives some examples of what a truthful person will say to answer these questions and what a deceitful person will say. [31:17] - You don’t always have to use these questions and in most cases you won’t need to. But Pamela has several that she keeps in her back pocket in the event that she needs more. [32:09] - A good interrogator or interviewer is prepared. If you are an artful interviewer, you will be prepared with tons of questions to determine that Cognitive Load. [33:13] - To answer the question of “can you teach me to lie?” Pamela says no because anyone who is really talented at interrogation will be able to detect deception. [34:07] - We all have biases and blindspots. So we are not completely immune to being conned or lied to. [34:57] - We are past polygraph tests these days. There is a lot of technology out there to detect deception. It can’t be used in all settings but it's available. [37:34] - There is a lot of technology that is effective and some that is not. Pamela gives some examples of studies that are going on currently. [39:08] - Chris and Pamela discuss the problem of cyberthreats and not knowing the baseline of someone. This also applies to AI algorithms. Thanks for joining us on Easy Prey. Be sure to subscribe to our podcast on iTunes and leave a nice review. "No one can lie to you without your approval." -Pamela Meyer This episode is ROBUST. Seriously, I've don't think I've ever spent so long researching to put an episode together, and even with all of the various areas covered in this episode, it only scratches the surface of the science of detecting lies and deception. After ending my 9 year relationship when I found out on Christmas Eve that my partner had been unfaithful to me for our entire 9 years together with someone else, I started doing a deep dive into liespotting and how to determine when someone is lying. I didn't trust myself after years of ignoring my own intuition, and needed to better understand why and how people lie, and I was able to watch in real time as many of the tools I had learned helped me to be a better judge and see the lies for what they were as they were continuously told to me. Most of us are lied to anywhere between 10 - 200 times per DAY. Worse yet, the average adult can only detect a lie around 54% of the time. We might as well be flipping coins. And the most common lie often told? "Nothing's wrong, I'm fine." This is indicative of the massive mental health effects that lying can have, both for the person being lied to and for the person doing the lying. On a larger scale with more significant lies being told over the longer term, the lies start to mount and build on top of each other, and it's like piling bricks on to quicksand. It creates a vicious cycle that the liar has difficulty escaping, even if they wanted to, while simultaneously doing a great deal of damage to the people on the receiving end of the lies. "I'm not going to swear an oath I can't uphold. When enough people make false promises, words stop meaning anything. Then there are no more answers, only better and better lies." -Jon Snow, Game of Thrones: watch clip here Don't be fooled into thinking that you never lie, though. While human nature is to inherently trust, all of us lie regularly for one reason or another. Men and women sometimes differ in their reasons for lying, which I discuss on the episode, but the reasons can vary from protecting someone else's feelings to guarding ourselves either physically or emotionally, to win the admiration of others or to avoid some sort of punishment. “Compared to truth-tellers, liars showed lower cognitive complexity, used fewer self-references and other-references, and used more negative emotion words.” Reference Imagine going through life lying to everyone. Not only would that be utterly exhausting, which I explain further in the episode, but you would automatically assume everyone else was constantly lying to you as well, because that would be all you know. You're going to walk away from this episode with a significantly greater understanding of how we lie, why we lie, and most importantly, some tools to add to your toolbox to be able to figure out when someone is lying to you, either at a professional or a personal level. This goes way beyond the old, inaccurate myths around liars being unable to maintain eye contact (completely untrue) or that if someone folds their arms across their chest, they must be lying. No, we're going much deeper than that. And while this episode is a great way to get started, I still strongly recommend you do some of your own research, starting with Pamela Meyer's book Liespotting: Proven Techniques to Detect Deception. Some areas covered: The Q Test: A way of determining how you and other people process information in the world which can be very helpful when it comes to picking out liars The muscles in our face that are next to impossible to control and give us away when we lie Three main areas to watch closely to look for "clusters" that can indicate lying or deceptive behaviour Why lying can be addictive in a way similar to gambling The differences between pathology liars and "regular" liars How to look for "emotional leakage" Specific types of questions to ask that will reveal lies Some of the mental health effects of lying, both on the giving and receiving end How/why lying has formed from an evolutionary standpoint I'm really looking forward to hearing your feedback about this episode, be sure to share it with someone who needs to hear this! Let’s face it, we all lie. Many of those lies are innocent white lies with the intent of making the other person look or feel better (That jacket looks great on you!) but other lies are much more hurtful and impactful (think: the Fyre Festival). Most people can’t spot a lie because humans are wired to believe one another. In this episode of Confident Communications, I’m sharing the common reasons we lie, which gender is more likely to lie, the lies each gender tell and which gestures can be misconstrued as lying (and which are dead giveaways for lies). Not only that, but I’ll use a simple trick that will tell you whether you’re more prone to telling lies. This episode is for parents, spouses, colleagues, customers, leaders--anyone who wants to become a human lie detector. I’m not going to lie...it will come in handy! Mentioned in this episode Fyre festival documentaries on Hulu and Netflix 1:4 people think it’s okay to lie on an insurance form By age of 4, 90% of children will understand the concept of a lie 60% of adults can’t have a 10 min conversation without lying at least once Men lie twice as much as women Women more comfortable with lying than men (Neurs study?) People lie, and many do it on a daily basis. Some lies are told simply to keep up social niceties, while some lies are told for much more sinister reasons. No matter the reason for them, lies can still affect your life negatively. However, research into facial expressions, gestures and the language of deception has given us better tools for identifying deception.
