The deeper we dig in Utah County, the more allegedly sinister things appear..especially to an outsider. From the mishandling of David Lee Hamblin's criminal cases to David Leavitt's tribal adoption scandal that allegedly led to a shut-down Homeland Security investigation...we dive back in. PLUS—some statement analysis on a high-profile denial and news article from criminal statement expert/analyst Paul Maillardet.Episode Notes & Disclaimer:Opinion and speculation are used throughout the podcast. Audience is encouraged to do their own research. Additionally, Statement Analysis is a tool used (sometimes by LE) as a way to indicate truths and lies based on expert opinion. Here is the statement and part two the case will be revealed. This is a departure from our usual formula with Robin and I, Ash was busy with Christmas stuff. We hope you enjoy:)Support the show: Patreon.com/julesandashleyPatreon.com/thetrailwentcoldOkay, um, basically… the truth of the matter is… me and ****** went to the old college and we got in a big argument and fight… and it was over money that she wouldn't give back to me. It was some change of a $20 bill. She hauled off and punched me. I then… not thinking… pushed her. She fell backwards and her head… when she fell backwards, her head impaled on something sharp sticking out of the ground. I then said: “Are you alright?”. I run over to her and she just mimed a little bit and… there was nothing else. I hollered out for help too cause Holmes Boulevard is right there. Nobody came, nobody yelled back or anything. I didn't want to leave her… I freaked out… I didn't… I said I don't know what to tell you all. I couldn't tell you all. I just freaked. Uh, so I… not thinking… I freaked… I tripped… I just didn't know what to do… I buried her. I didn't know what to do. It was the wrong thing to do, I agree. But I was 14 years old. I wasn't thinking. I then… I came home after that, but she was dead. Definitely dead before I buried her. That I know because I checked her stomach and all that. Then after that, I sit therefor about 30 minutes… 30 to 45 minutes… just didn't know what to do. I went home, I got cleaned up. I regret it, I'm sorry it did happen. I regret pushing her. I wish I could go back in time and not have done that. I wish I could turn time, if I could turn time back, I wouldn't just… you know. It was all over money… and you know what money will do to you when you're a kid. I don't know… you were a kid… you had a certain amount of money… the money was valuable to you then, you know. But that's the way it was with me when I was a kid. Every dime I got, I depend on. Because most stuff like that I had to work for.

This week, our goal was to "unmask the deception" in Aaron Solomon's 911 call (with the help of the brilliant Paul Maillardet from the Peter Hyatt Statement Analysis team). 911 calls are often a lifeline in emergencies, connecting distressed individuals with first responders who can provide assistance. However, some 911 calls require a trained ear to detect a lack of integrity or truth. Thanks to the diligent work of the Statement Analysis Team, major red flags have been brought to light in this episode. Avinoam Sapir is the developer of the SCAN technique ("Scientific Content Analysis"), a method for analyzing statements in order to "read between the lines" and extract significant information that an ordinary reading of the text does not reveal. It can be applied to any text, regardless of the circumstances in which the text was written, and without any prior information regarding the identity or personality of the writer of the text. SCAN analyzes a text or statement strictly according to the words used. Mr Sapir served in Israeli Military Intelligence and the Israeli Police Polygraph. He holds a B.A. in both Psychology and Criminology, and an M.A. in Criminology. During the past few decades, Mr Sapir has conducted training in interviewing for various government agencies in Israel, the US, Canada, and several other countries around the world. He developed the SCAN technique by conducting extensive research into verbal communication, looking into the linguistic behavior used by people in communication. The SCAN technique is currently being used in many police departments and other government agencies in many countries. Retired FBI Agent Frank Runles and I discuss Statement Analysis and how we lie about addiction to ourselves and others.
Mark McClish was a federal law enforcement officer for 26 years. He started his law enforcement career in 1983 with the U.S. Secret Service Uniformed Division. During the two years he was with the Secret Service he was assigned to the White House. His main duties were protecting the White House complex. He would also on occasion provide protection for President Reagan when the President traveled. In 1985, he was hired by the U.S. Marshals Service and served as a Deputy U.S. Marshal in Springfield, IL. This change allowed him to focus more on investigations and less on protection. He worked numerous federal fugitive cases and assisted local law enforcement in apprehending state fugitives. He also worked on a "Warrant Apprehension Narcotic's Team" which was a national drug task force. In 1990, Mark was promoted to the position of Inspector/Instructor at the U.S. Marshals Service Training Academy located at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Glynco, GA. He taught at the Training Academy for nine years serving as the lead instructor on interviewing techniques. He used this time to study deceptive statements and conduct research on deception. Based on his findings, he created the Statement Analysis techniques for detecting deception in a verbal and written statement. While assigned to the Training Academy Mark was also the lead defensive tactics instructor for the Marshals Service. Mark left the Training Academy in 1999 and took a position as a Supervisory Deputy U.S. Marshal in Greenville, NC. He supervised four offices located in Eastern NC. He also spoke at law enforcement conferences and conducted Statement Analysis seminars on behalf of the Marshals Service. Mark retired from the Marshals Service in 2009 and started Advanced Interviewing Concepts. His company provides interviewing skills training and assists investigators in analyzing statements. Mark currently gives presentations and seminars on Statement Analysis throughout the U.S. He has spoken at numerous conferences and has trained a variety of law enforcement agencies and military organizations. He is the author of the books I Know You Are Lying and Don't Be Deceived. He also developed the Statement Analyzer which is software that will analyze a statement for deception. Truth and Lies - both are critical elements in discerning what happened in most true crime cases. I speak with an interview expert, Mark McClish, who in addition to a 26 year in federal law enforcement, developed a technique called Statement Analysis, which helps him ascertain if a person’s statements - written or oral - are truthful. We discuss truthfulness at large and how humans generally do not want to lie. You will learn why “never” is a problematic word, and I ask him about one of the principles from his book: BELIEVE WHAT PEOPLE TELL YOU. We unpack this for a bit. While we touch on several high profile cases and statements made by related individuals, I ask him specifically about a case that he used as an example in his book, “I Know You are Lying.” the statement is a 1993 video interview by Michael Jackson in response to allegations of molesting a child. I am including a link to the interview here. It will give context and might be helpful as we talk about some of those words. You can learn more about Mark’s work and books on his website:http://statementanalysis.com/ -------------------- In today’s show, you will also hear a brief message at the top about how I am processing and seeking to understand the conversation around race and justice in our country.
