“The people helping people motto should be lived inside the walls of our organizations just as much as we live it outside with our members.” - Jaime MarksThank you for tuning in to The CUInsight Network, with your host, Robbie Young, Vice President of Strategic Growth at CUInsight. In The CUInsight Network, we take a deeper dive with the thought leaders who support the credit union community. We discuss issues and challenges facing credit unions and identify best practices to learn and grow together. My guest on today's show is Jaime Marks, Director of Recruiting Services at Humanidei. Jamie and I dig into what actually matters when building strong leadership teams, and she shares the pivotal experiences that shaped her, from her first job at Ent Credit Union to taking on bold career shifts across states and institutions. In our conversation, we get personal about the mentors who saw Jaime's potential, the environments that helped her grow, and the toxic cultures which she learned to spot from a mile away. Her insights are grounded within years of experience and a true passion for helping organizations lead with integrity and intention. We also touch upon what “values alignment” really looks like when hiring senior leaders, with Jamie explaining that she doesn't just fill roles; she reads between the lines, listening for what a board or leadership team really needs, even if they don't say it out loud.As we wrap up the episode, Jaime talks about the mentors who have impacted her life, her love of Sur La Table and Santa Barbara, California, and has a book recommendation for everyone. If you need some inspiration in your life this is the episode for you. We have on the show podcast, author and one of the fittest men in the world Rich Roll. At age 40, and after years of struggling with drugs, alcohol, and unhealthy living, Rich dedicated his diet to plants and his body to purposeful action. Just two years later, he began clocking top finishes at Ultraman World Championships and leading a community of others looking to transform their lives.A graduate of Stanford University and Cornell Law School, Rich is a 55-year old, accomplished vegan ultra-endurance athlete and former entertainment attorney turned full-time wellness & plant-based nutrition advocate, popular public speaker, husband, father of 4 and inspiration to people worldwide as a transformative example of courageous and healthy living. In 2012, Rich became a #1 bestselling author with the publication of his inspirational memoir Finding Ultra: Rejecting Middle Age, Becoming One of the World's Fittest Men, and Discovering Myself.Taking up where the book leaves off, in 2013 Rich launched the wildly popular Rich Roll Podcast, which persistently sits atop the iTunes top-10 lists. In 2014, Rich & his wife Julie Piatt published the bestselling cookbook and lifestyle primer, The Plantpower Way: Whole Food Plant-Based Recipes And Guidance For The Whole Family. In May 2010, Rich and his ultra-colleague Jason Lester accomplished an unprecedented feat of staggering endurance many said was not possible. Something they call the EPIC5 CHALLENGE– an odyssey that entailed completing 5 ironman-distance triathlons on 5 islands of Hawaii in under a week. Commencing on Kauai, they travelled to Oahu, Molokai and Maui before finishing on the Big Island, following the course of the Ironman World Championships on the Kona coast. In addition, Rich has been a top finisher at the 2008 and 2009 Ultraman World Championships in Hawaii. Considered by many to be one of world's most daunting and grueling endurance races on the planet, Ultraman is a 3-day / 320 mile double-ironman distance triathlon that circumnavigates the entire Big Island. Limited to only 35 carefully selected invitation-only participants from all over the world, Day 1 involves a 6.2 mile ocean swim immediately followed by a 90 mile cross-country cycling race. Day 2 is a 170 mile cycling race. And the event culminates on Day 3 with a 52 mile double marathon run on the searing hot lava fields of the Kona coast. But what makes Rich truly remarkable is that less than two years prior to his first Ultraman, he didn't even own a bike, let alone race one.Although he competed as a butterfly swimmer at Stanford University in the late 80's, Rich's career was cut short by struggles with drugs and alcohol — an addiction that led him astray for the next decade, alienating friends, colleagues and family, landing him in jails, institutions and ultimately rehab at age 31. Although sober, Rich soon found himself 50 pounds overweight; the furthest thing from fit. Everything came to head on the eve of his 40th birthday. Defeated by a mere flight of stairs that left him buckled over in pain, he foresaw the almost certain heart attack looming in his near future."It was time for a major life change." – RICH ROLLThe day immediately following his staircase epiphany, Rich overhauled his diet, became a dedicated vegan, put on his running shoes and jumped back into the pool. It wasn't long before ambition took hold and his quest to participate in Ultraman slowly began. Two years later, 50 pounds lighter, and fueled by nothing but plants, he surprised the triathlon & ultra communities by not only becoming the first vegan to complete the 320-mile über-endurance event, but by finishing in the top 10 males (3rd fastest American) with the 2nd fastest swim split — all despite having never previously completed even a half-ironman distance triathlon. In 2009, Rich returned to Ultraman twice the athlete he was the year prior. Despite a stacked field, he took home first day honors with a blistering 2:21 swim victory (6th fastest of all time) and a third fastest bike leg to win the day with a 10 minute lead on the field. On Day 2 Rich suffered a serious bike crash but managed to salvage the day in 6th place overall. With an injured knee and shoulder Rich nonetheless went on to a 7:51 Day 3 double-marathon to hold onto 6th place overall.Rich's plant-fueled feats of boundary-pushing athleticism have been featured on CNN and major publications including The New York Times, Los Angeles Times Sunday Magazine, The Huffington Post, Stanford Magazine, Men's Health Living, VegNews, Triathlete, Outside, 3/GO Magazine and Men's Fitness Magazine, which named Rich as one of the “25 Fittest Men in the World.”I can't think of a better guest for our 100th episode of Next Level Soul. Dan Churchill's The Epic Table

Legends! In the studio today I am joined by the legendary Rich Roll. Rich is a primary thought leader in society, with a podcast ranked in the top charts for years and a  social platform reaching millions, Rich is truly a voice for the people. Being able to learn from Rich as a friend is truly an honor and a blessing. In this episode, we gain a vulnerable and in-depth look into who Rich truly is. We dive into his story from a Division 1 swimmer in college to battling with drugs and alcohol all the way to how he maintains emotional sobriety now in the midst of his success. Rich is one of the most impressive, supportive, and caring humans I have met. He graduated from Stanford University and Cornell Law School, became a lawyer, and was making good money. At the age of 30 Rich had hit rock bottom working as a lawyer in the hopes to prove himself to his family and peers. He became a workaholic for 10 years striving to please others while neglecting himself. Through this low point, he reached the age of 40, had a heart attack scare, was addicted to junk food weighing 50 pounds overweight, and wasn't happy. He had a wake-up call. Rich became a vegan, focusing on the energetic benefits of plants and how to eat for performance. In his 40's Rich became one of the first vegan ultra-endurance athletes paving the way for those to follow. In 2008 and 2009, Rich competed in the Ultraman World Championships in Hawaii which is one of the world's most daunting and grueling endurance races on the planet. He was a top finisher. Later in May of 2010, Rich completed the EPIC5 Challenge: completing 5 ironman-distance triathlons on 5 islands of Hawaii in under a week. He also became one of the world's fittest men. These are incredible physical feats that many couldn't even imagine achieving and these are just one aspect of who Rich is. In 2012, Rich launched his book Finding Ultra: Rejecting Middle Age, Becoming One of the World's Fittest Men, and Discovering Myself, and became a #1 bestselling author. After publication, Rich launched his podcast The Rich Roll Podcast which resides in the Itunes Top-10 List. Rich is a legend. In the episode we specifically discuss:How Rich Roll became plant-basedHow and why he started running ultra marathonsHow he began building his business after Finding UltraHis journey into creating The Rich Roll PodcastThe power of rehabHow to increase aerobic capacityWhat activities increase aerobic capacityHow to train for an IronmanHow should a beginner train for an ironman? How do you train for a half Ironman?Currently, Rich is helping thousands transition to plant-based diets through the in-depth discovery of their bio-individuality met with his incredible service, Meal Planner, which provides customers with recipes, videos, articles, meal deliveries, and everything you could need to make a healthy transition to veganism. Connect with Rich via his:WebsiteInstagramPodcastAnd get his:BooksMeal Planner

RICH ROLL A graduate of Stanford University and Cornell Law School, Rich is a 50-year old, accomplished vegan ultra-endurance athlete and former entertainment attorney turned full-time wellness & plant-based nutrition advocate, popular public speaker, husband, father of 4, and inspiration to people worldwide as a transformative example of courageous and healthy living. In 2012, Rich became a #1 bestselling author with the publication of his inspirational memoir Finding Ultra: Rejecting Middle Age, Becoming One of the World's Fittest Men, and Discovering Myself. In 2014, Rich & his wife Julie Piatt published the bestselling cookbook and lifestyle primer, The Plantpower Way: Whole Food Plant-Based Recipes And Guidance For The Whole Family. IN THIS EPISODE… Joe sits down in person with the inspirational wellness advocate, best-selling author, and podcast host Rich Roll. Rich tells Joe about his crippling addiction to alcohol and how he was able to finally admit he had a problem and seek help. He talks about his relapse 13 years into sobriety, which only lasted one day, and what he learned from that experience. Rich also explains how one scary moment going up the stairs at age 39 triggered his quest to find a healthier, plant-based lifestyle. They wrap up their in-depth conversation with a look at how Rich was able to start his podcast during a time with limited resources and technology and turn it into a top-ranking, healthy lifestyle in areas of fitness, mindset, and nutrition for his listeners.  Breakdown with Rich Roll: Chapter 1 (0:00) Intro Joe introduced Rich Roll Chapter 2 (2:00) Pre-podcast journey The catalyst that started the podcast was Rich's life experiences which included his relationship with alcohol and how he was able to restart his life after a low point in his life. Chapter 3 (7:26) Law trajectory Rich did not extend his law license. He explains why he decided not to continue on the path of being a lawyer. Chapter 4 (12:40) Seeing help Suffering from alcoholism for a long time, Rich finally decided to get treatment. He explains addiction and how to try to identify when you or someone you love can identify the problem. Chapter 5 (17:56) A moment of prayer While going through the 12 steps of AA, Rich found himself on a beach having a moment where he could let go of his past, and hardships and start on a new path. Chapter 6 (29:50) Health scare and a change Rich found himself in a scary moment climbing the stairs and fighting for breath at the age of 39; although he kicked the alcohol addiction, he was not healthy, so clean living starts Chapter 7 (40:04) Giving up dairy is tough The hardest part of becoming vegan was giving up on cheese. Dairy is the biggest food most people say they can't live without, but once Rich gave it up, it made the biggest difference Chapter 8 (49:52) Endurance Running Once Rich had given up on alcohol and had the moment of clarity he needed to make a change in his diet, he had a flow moment on a run  and found his athletic stride Chapter 9 (58:56) Finding ultra Rich began starting to look for ultra runs to try to push himself to find his peak performance. He ended up finding a double ultra race and began laser focus on qualifying. Chapter 10 (1:05:45) Magic in Hawaii Finding a relationship with Hawaii Rich was able to tap into a sense of encouragement. You have to ask for permission from the island, you can feel the power. Chapter 11 (1:20:34) Doing it without a net Rich started his podcast with no intentions of money or where it would lead him, but in a pure way of wanting to learn and provide education to his audience. Chapter 12 (1:38:02) Wrap Up Joe wraps up the episode and shares his takeaways Material Referenced in this interview: →https://www.richroll.com/ →https://www.richroll.com/all-episodes/ →https://www.richroll.com/books/

It could just start with simple steps such as writing down the things you are struggling with in your life and jotting down the things you want to give more attention to. Another "first step" example can be putting your shoes on to go for a walk because you have aspirations to run a marathon.    "It's not about quitting your job overnight and making some broad dramatic statement. Rich Roll is a 53-year old, accomplished vegan ultra-endurance athlete, wellness advocate, bestselling author and host of the Rich Roll Podcast. A former entertainment attorney turned full-time wellness & plant-based nutrition advocate, popular public speaker, husband, father of 4 and inspiration to people worldwide as a transformative example of courageous and healthy living. His inspirational memoir FINDING ULTRA became a bestseller upon it's release in 2012 and THE PLANTPOWER WAY cookbook graces kitchens across the world. Along with his wife and four children, Rich resides in Malibu Canyon outside of Los Angeles. Chapter Description: Today we are headed West, perched atop the hills of Calabasas, California, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. I’d love for you to be my guest for an incredible conversation with the one and only Rich Roll. Who is Rich Roll? Well, Rich was introduced to me by Jonathan Fields, our guest in Chapter 24 and host of the Goodlife Project. Jonathan told me Rich was one of his favorite people and he soon became one of my favorite people. I love his mind, his words, his outlook, and his incredible podcast … and was thrilled to have a chance to ask him which 3 books most shaped his life.   Rich went to Stanford and Cornell and was a national athlete at Stanford in swimming, but his career was cut short by a decade-long struggle with drugs and alcohol, eventually landing him in jail and rehab. On the eve of his 40th birthday, as he walked up the stairs he was left totally winded… and decided it was time to make a change. The next day Rich overhauled his life. He switched to a 100% vegan, plant-based diet, grabbed his running shoes, jumped back into the pool, and two years later, fueled only by plants and after losing 50 pounds, he became the first vegan to ever compete in the 320-mile ultra-marathon and finished as the 3rd fastest American in the race. Are you kidding me?? He then went on to complete five Ironman Triathlons on five islands of Hawaii in one week! In 2012, he wrote his inspirational memoir FINDING ULTRA: Rejecting Middle Age, Becoming One of the World’s Fittest Men, and Discovering Myself, which became a bestseller upon its release and is still ranking highly to this day. It’s a fantastic book and memoir. I’ve read it. I loved it and can’t recommend it enough. In 2013, he launched the Rich Roll Podcast. An incredible podcast, often ranking in the top 50 on iTunes, he does a deep exploration and mindmeld with people such as Russell Brand, Kevin Smith, Lance Armstrong, and Edward Norton. He calls it a two-hour experience, where he covers huge themes around fitness, creativity, and the human condition. I was very lucky to link my mind with Rich in Chapter 45 of 3 Books. Let’s go! How do you build a successful podcast? How do you overcome deep addiction? Leave us a voicemail. Your message may be included in a future episode: 1-833-READ-A-LOT. THE LESS YOU DO THE MORE YOU CAN RECEIVE. Take a moment to explore your habits. Do you glance at your phone during every free moment? Do you fill up your calendar with things that don’t add value? Do you spend your day working on a job that has no meaning for you? If so, your life is cluttered. Not just with stuff, but with noise. Quieting down and clearing out our schedule can be scary because it means you may have the space to face some tough questions. But when you do, you’ll find you’re able to live a much more intentional life. On today’s episode of The School of Greatness, I explore minimalism with five experts on the subject: Cal Newport, Jesse Itzler, Joshua Fields Millburn, Rich Roll, and Chris Guillebeau. Cal Newport is a computer science professor at Georgetown University. In addition to academic research, he writes about the intersection of technology and society. He’s particularly interested in the impact of new technologies on our ability to perform productive work or lead satisfying lives. Jesse Itzler is an ultramarathon runner who is also a bestselling author, award-winning rapper, and an original partner for ZICO coconut water. He is the co-founder of Marquis Jets and a co-owner of the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks. Joshua Fields Millburn is the co-founder of The Minimalists, which has become a hugely popular podcast and lifestyle in the past few years. Joshua and his co-host help more than 20 million people live meaningful lives with less through their website, books, podcast, and films. The Minimalists have been featured in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Boston Globe, Forbes, and more. They have spoken at Harvard, Apple, and Google. Their documentary was recently released by Netflix. Rich Roll is a graduate of Stanford University and Cornell Law School, accomplished vegan ultra-endurance athlete and former entertainment attorney turned full-time wellness & plant-based nutrition advocate, popular public speaker, and inspiration to people worldwide as a transformative example of courage and healthy living. Rich became a #1 bestselling author with the publication of his inspirational memoir Finding Ultra: Rejecting Middle Age, Becoming One of the World’s Fittest Men, and Discovering Myself. Taking up where the book leaves off, in 2013 Rich launched the wildly popular Rich Roll Podcast. Chris Guillebeau is a NY Times Best Selling Author, speaker, a modern day explorer, and has been to nearly every country in the world. He is best known for The Art of Non-Conformity blog and book. He has also written guides for travel and small business topics under the brand Unconventional Guides. He organizes the annual World Domination Summit in Portland, Oregon. These five incredible teachers all have a practice of minimalism. I’ve combined key lessons from interviews with them to create a masterclass on doing less so that we can ultimately do more. So get ready to learn all about quieting down and clearing out on Episode 809. Some Questions I Ask: What was the greatest lesson you learned from Monks? (16:15) What’s the biggest personal challenge over the last few years? (32:13) If you were going to choose diet, meditation and exercise, which would you start with? (34:15) What’s the difference between a hobby and a quest? How to change your habits and stick with it.  How to live your best life and why you deserve health, and happiness.   About Rich Roll A graduate of Stanford University and Cornell Law School, Rich is a 50-year old, accomplished vegan ultra-endurance athlete and former entertainment attorney turned full-time wellness & plant-based nutrition advocate, popular public speaker, husband, father of 4 and inspiration to people worldwide as a transformative example of courageous and healthy living. In 2012, Rich became a #1 bestselling author with the publication of his inspirational memoir Finding Ultra: Rejecting Middle Age, Becoming One of the World’s Fittest Men, and Discovering Myself. Taking up where the book leaves off, in 2013 Rich launched the wildly popular Rich Roll Podcast, which persistently sits atop the iTunes top-10 lists. Something they call the EPIC5 CHALLENGE- a odyssey that entailed completing 5 ironman-distance triathlons on 5 islands of Hawaii in under a week. Commencing on Kauai, they travelled to Oahu, Molokai and Maui before finishing on the Big Island, following the course of the Ironman World Championships on the Kona coasIn addition, Rich has been a top finisher at the 2008 and 2009 Ultraman World Championships in Hawaii. Considered by many to be one of world’s most daunting and grueling endurance races on the planet, Ultraman is a 3-day / 320 mile double-ironman distance triathlon that circumnavigates the entire Big Island. But what makes Rich truly remarkable is that less than two years prior to his first Ultraman, he didn’t even own a bike, let alone race one. Although he competed as a butterfly swimmer at Stanford University in the late 80’s, Rich’s career was cut short by struggles with drugs and alcohol — an addiction that led him astray for the next decade, alienating friends, colleagues and family, landing him in jails, institutions and ultimately rehab at age 31. Although sober, Rich soon found himself 50 pounds overweight; the furthest thing from fit.  Everything came to head on the eve of his 40th birthday.  Defeated by a mere flight of stairs that left him buckled over in pain, he foresaw the almost certain heart attack looming in his near future. It was time for a major life change. The day immediately following his staircase epiphany, Rich overhauled his diet, became a dedicated vegan, put on his running shoes and jumped back into the pool.  It wasn’t long before ambition took hold and his quest to participate in Ultraman slowly began. On Day 2 Richard suffered a serious bike crash but managed to salvage the day in 6th place overall. With an injured knee and shoulder Richard nonetheless went on to a 7:51 Day 3 double-marathon to hold onto 6th place overall. Rich’s plant-fueled feats of boundary-pushing athleticism have been featured on CNN and major publications including The New York Times, Los Angeles Times Sunday Magazine, The Huffington Post, Stanford Magazine, Men’s Health Living, VegNews, Triathlete, Outside, 3/GO Magazine and Men’s Fitness Magazine, which named Rich as one of the “25 Fittest Men in the World.” Along with his wife and four children, Rich resides in Malibu Canyon outside of Los Angeles. When he isn’t writing, podcasting or spending time with his family, you can find him lost on the remote trails of the Santa Monica Mountains. Rich Roll was near 40 and in horrific shape. He had a big awakening and transformed himself into not just a fit and well guy, but an elite, ultra endurance athlete. And from that, a guy who is massively inspiring hundreds of thousands of people. You may know Rich from his top ranked podcast, “The Rich Roll Podcast”. Rich is a world-renown, plant-based ultra-endurance athlete, in-demand public speaker, wellness advocate, bestselling author and inspirational hero to a global audience of wellness seekers as a transformative example of courageous and healthy living. The story is, after succumbing to the sedentary throes of overweight middle age, at age 40, Rich made a decision to overhaul his life, adopting a plant-based diet and reinventing himself as an ultra-distance endurance athlete. Just a few years later, Rich stunned the multisport community with top finishes at the Ultraman World Championships, a 320-mile, 3-day double ironman-distance triathlon widely considered one of the most grueling endurance events on the planet. Rich chronicles his journey in Finding Ultra: Rejecting Middle Age, Becoming One of the World’s Fittest Men, and Discovering Myself -- an inspirational memoir of plant-fueled athletic prowess which quickly became a #1 bestseller. In 2015, Rich and his vegan chef wife Julie Piatt released The Plantpower Way – a plant-based cookbook and lifestyle primer for the active modern family. The discussion was, well, Rich! I felt quite a kindred spirit in Rich, and from the authenticity he shares in the struggles he’s dealt with, I think you will too. Running is not new to this blog or podcast. In fact, I've done episodes on various aspects of running before (listen to Episode 20, Episode 25, and Episode 32.)   But a couple of things have changed since I last talked about running on the podcast. First, I am just about to complete my certification as a Level I Running Coach through the RRCA. I've been wanting to do this for a while and was so excited to take the course. I had a great time with the cohort. Second, one of the main reasons I wanted to get certified was so that I could bring that knowledge to some therapy running groups I am working on starting. Even though I have been running through years and feel that I can be helpful to runners when building a program...I really wanted the information and knowledge to do it in a way that just wasn't relying on my experience since every runner is different.   So, in this episode: I talk briefly about my coaching certification process. I share my desire to start therapy running groups in my practice. And I review the 4 key components of self-care that running engages. Please listen and subscribe to my podcast in the following places, and then leave a comment letting me know what you liked about the show, or what guest you would like to hear from. As a kid I loved to run. Whether it was chasing or racing friends, running was something that I grew up loving to do. And I continued to run in high school, competing in the 110 meter high hurdles, 300 meter intermediate hurdles and the 4 x 400. But somewhere over the years I noticed I stopped running as much. Sure, I still ran a couple of nights a week, but that was more of an ad on to my weight lifting routine, and just another avenue that I thought would help me stay fit. But in the Spring of 2006 my brother Wyatt called me to see if I wanted to run the Chicago Marathon with him. I don't remember the details of our conversation, but I remember agreeing to do do with very little hesitancy. Sure, I had never run more than 3 miles at one time in my life, but that didn't seem to bother me. I guess I figured I would....figure it out. So I trained for 16 weeks and ended up running the marathon in about 4:13. And at that moment I became addicted to running. I entered another marathon, ran a few 5K's, half-marathons, and eventually a 50k in February of 2014. And at the time of this writing I am training for the Palo Duro 50 Mile race in October. And over the years, especially this last year, I have really found that not only has running continued to transform my life, but it has brought me great joy. I look forward to getting out and running because I never come back from a run with any regrets. In this podcast I explore several things: my own personal journey with running and how it has transformed my life. 10 benefits (and more) that running brings to your life. 7 tips to get you started in running, or to help renew your interest in running. 5 books that have inspired my running and that will inspire you.   Resources Mentioned in the Podcast Ultramarathon Man: Confessions of an All-Night Runner by Dean Karnazes Finding Ultra: Rejecting Middle Age, Becoming One of the World's Most Fittest Men, and Discovering Myself by Rich Roll Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Ever Seen by Christopher McDougall Why We Run: A Natural History by Bernd Heinrich Eat and Run: My Unlikely Journey to Ultramarathon Greatness by Scott Jurek Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain by John J.
