In this episode of Grow a Small Business, host Troy Trewin interviews Scott Maynard, co-founder of Excite Media, a Brisbane-based marketing agency specializing in digital marketing for service-based businesses. Scott, an electrical engineer with a background in software development, brings over 20 years of experience to the marketing industry. Excite Media has grown from a two-person startup to a 40-employee company generating $5.6 million in revenue. Scott attributes their success to prioritizing team happiness, client satisfaction, and financial sustainability. They foster a positive work environment through a 4-day work week and open feedback channels. Other Resources: An easy way to measure if your customers love you in 21 minutes – use the Net Promoter Score (NPS). And it's FREE. Why would you wait any longer to start living the lifestyle you signed up for? Balance your health, wealth, relationships and business growth. And focus your time and energy and make the most of this year. Let's get into it by clicking here. Troy delves into our guest's startup journey, their perception of success, industry reconsideration, and the pivotal stress point during business expansion. They discuss the joys of small business growth, vital entrepreneurial habits, and strategies for team building, encompassing wins, blunders, and invaluable advice. And a snapshot of the final five Grow A Small Business Questions: What do you think is the hardest thing in growing a small business? Scott Maynard, co-founder of Excite Media, believes the hardest thing in growing a small business is juggling the various demands and feeling pulled in different directions. He compares the experience to navigating an obstacle course in the dark or juggling Rubik's cubes while facing unexpected challenges. This feeling arises from the need to manage multiple priorities simultaneously as the business expands. What's your favourite business book that has helped you the most? One of the business books mentioned in the podcast you uploaded is "100 Million Dollar Offers" by Alex Hormozi. It's highly recommended for understanding how to create compelling offers that can transform a business. The guest also praises it for its insights on objection handling and structuring marketable offers. For my personal favorite, I would highlight "The Lean Startup" by Eric Ries, as it provides a practical approach to building businesses that focus on continuous innovation and learning—a principle useful across industries. Are there any great podcasts or online learning resources you'd recommend to help grow a small business? Scott Maynard highly recommends seeking out podcasts and online resources that are specific to your industry. He also suggests exploring content from individuals like Gary Vaynerchuk (Gary V) and Warren Buffet, who offer valuable insights applicable to various business aspects. Maynard emphasizes the importance of being curious and choosing materials that resonate with your needs. What tool or resource would you recommend to grow a small business? Scott Maynard suggests that learning how to use a spreadsheet is a valuable tool for growing a small business. While it may not seem glamorous, spreadsheets are incredibly versatile for tasks like business planning, number crunching, and financial forecasting. He emphasizes that mastering this fundamental tool can empower business owners to make informed decisions and manage their operations effectively. What advice would you give yourself on day one of starting out in business? Looking back on his 20-year entrepreneurial journey, Scott Maynard would advise his younger self to be patient, maintain consistency, and focus on the business fundamentals. He emphasizes that success is not a get-rich-quick scheme but rather a result of sustained effort and dedication over time. Hello to you and Happy Birthday, Steve Wyzga, in Gaithersburg, Maryland! Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Time Out Tuesday and your host, Diane Wyzga. My brother Steve is one of the very few people I know who consistently converts a moon shadow into moon glow. I'd been fighting “kennel cough” - the plague of Camino pilgrims sharing close quarters in 40-bed dorm rooms - and this early morning was very cold, very dark, very wet. In the tightly packed albergue kitchen warmly dressed pilgrims prepared to leave. My gear was meager, my breakfast was a mug of hot water, and my mood was black. What would Steve do?A fellow wearing a dark tee shirt stepped into the kitchen as I was weighing the odds of heading out or waiting for a break in the downpour. He turned away from me and just then I remembered these lines from another morning, another place: “In life many things will catch your eye but few will catch your heart; follow those.”What caught my heart? The word ADJUST in great big white letters on the back of his tee shirt. That's how Steve does it. That's how I'll do it. To hell with fear! I'm heading out.Question: What helps you get your sorry self back on the road again? You're invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, I hope you'll subscribe, share a nice shout out on your social media or podcast channel of choice, and join us next time! DormCo website: https://www.dormco.com/ Jeff and his company DormCo are looking for smart and unique ideas for the college dorm industry from people like you! He started out as an inventor so his attitude towards working with inventors is very positive. Jeff started DormCo in 2010 off of just one product idea, an innovative shelf that he designed for bunk beds. He was a senior in college when he came up with his wooden bed post shelf design and big retailers weren't interested in his product for the dorm industry. He was just out of college and had a job in pharmaceutical sales at the time but he really wanted to pursue his product and passion. He left his career to follow his dreams knowing that he could go back if he had to but since he has just one life he wanted to go for it. Jeff continued to follow his dream and since he wasn't doing it for the money there were times that he wasn't sure it would work out. There were even some backwards steps in his journey as an entrepreneur including when he ended up in a mall selling jewelry while he was launching his business. He was even stocking Disney movies at one point. People didn't understand but he kept battling and in the end it worked out! His original goal was to sell enough to earn 25k a year to make the same income as his wife who was working as a teacher. Today his company DormCo is selling thousands of products and doing millions in sales. Courtney Laschkewitsch, Managing Director of IGA, recently submitted her innovative product ideas to Jeff and was able to license four products with DormCo. He explained that she sent over a bunch of drawings at first and that some were insane and some were usable. They launched all four of them and one of them is doing pretty good. Jeff explained that DormCo can test products beforehand and find out through trial and error what products will sell well. He further explained that they can order a small original quantity to test because they have established partnerships with factories. How do you submit product ideas to Jeff? Email Jeff@dormco.com to submit your ideas. DormCo website: https://www.dormco.com/ Jeff's email: Jeff@dormco.com Bringing an invention to market?
