In this episode of Grow a Small Business, host Troy Trewin interviews Doug Taylor, co-founder of Taylor Chip, a rapidly growing dessert brand. Starting from a wedding cookie idea in 2018, Taylor Chip now has 7 retail stores, 42 employees, and $10M revenue projections. Doug shares insights on expanding beyond Pennsylvania, leveraging automation, e-commerce, and marketing strategies. He also discusses the challenges of scaling, hiring the right team, and overcoming financial hurdles. Tune in to hear his inspiring journey from a small startup to a thriving dessert empire! Why would you wait any longer to start living the lifestyle you signed up for? Balance your health, wealth, relationships and business growth. And focus your time and energy and make the most of this year. Let's get into it by clicking here. Troy delves into our guest's startup journey, their perception of success, industry reconsideration, and the pivotal stress point during business expansion. They discuss the joys of small business growth, vital entrepreneurial habits, and strategies for team building, encompassing wins, blunders, and invaluable advice. And a snapshot of the final five Grow A Small Business Questions: What do you think is the hardest thing in growing a small business? According to Doug Taylor, the hardest part of growing a small business is market capture and scaling effectively. He emphasizes that each new level of growth presents unique challenges, especially in a highly competitive industry like desserts. Doug explains that getting people to know about your brand, breaking into new markets, and ensuring consistent quality while scaling are major hurdles. He also highlights the importance of adapting to changing marketing landscapes, staying financially disciplined, and continuously improving operations to sustain growth. What's your favourite business book that has helped you the most? Doug Taylor's favorite business book that has helped him the most is "Think and Grow Rich" by Napoleon Hill. He credits it for unlocking the mindset and strategic thinking needed for business success. However, he also acknowledges the controversies around the author but still finds the psychological principles valuable. Another book he frequently references is "The Paradox of Choice", which explores decision-making and its impact on business and consumer behavior. Are there any great podcasts or online learning resources you'd recommend to help grow a small business? Doug Taylor recommends "How I Built This" with Guy Raz for valuable insights from successful entrepreneurs, especially in food and beverage. He found it instrumental in learning about scaling a business. However, he later reduced content consumption to focus on execution, believing that prioritizing action over excessive learning is key to growth. What tool or resource would you recommend to grow a small business? Doug Taylor recommends TikTok Shop and Facebook Ads as powerful tools for growing a small business. He emphasizes the importance of organic social media, e-commerce, and influencer marketing to drive sales. He also highlights email marketing as a high-ROI tool for customer retention and business growth. What advice would you give yourself on day one of starting out in business? Doug Taylor's advice to his day-one self would be: "Be patient and invest in automation early." He regrets not adopting automation sooner, which could have saved time and labor costs. He also emphasizes the importance of understanding good debt, scaling efficiently, and staying resilient through challenges. Book a 20-minute Growth Chat with Troy Trewin to see if you qualify for our upcoming course. Don't miss out on this opportunity to take your small business to new heights! Enjoyed the podcast? I'm thrilled to be joined by Doug Taylor, CEO @ The Smith Family to explore: Why should CEOs tell stories on social media? Yes, stories. I wonder how many leaders see storytelling as part of their official remit today? Some may think, well, why bother? My job is to manage the numbers and the decision making across the organisation, not tell stories. And that may well have been true just a few short decades ago. But we now live in the reputation economy, where leaders are required to do much more than just deliver shareholder returns.Just as social media has provided leaders with a platform to speak and control their narrative, social media has also provided their stakeholders with access and the right of reply. When audiences are making decisions around whether to or not to work for you, to or not to buy from you, to or not to trust you, your stories as a CEO really do matter. To learn more about and support the work of The Smith Family, head to: www.thesmithfamily.com.auFor all the show notes, head to: propelgroup.com.au/podcast/doug-taylorYOUR DIGITAL REPUTATION PROGRAM:Whether you're an emerging leader looking to take your next step up, an established leader keen to protect and harness your hard-earned reputation, or a leadership team keen to get aligned and active online, the Your Digital Reputation Program is perfect for you.For more information or to get started, get in touch with Roger Christie: linkedin.com/in/rogerchristieYOUR DIGITAL REPUTATION NEWSLETTER:And finally, sign up to the Your Digital Reputation newsletter by your host, Roger Christie. A lot of tradespeople get stuck working in their business and not on their business, with 3 very different owners they can approach the business from a few different vantage points.Everyone shares their thoughts on pricing, figuring out your price, based on scope of work and not square footage, and avoiding the rat race to the bottom just to get the job. The owners have found quarterly company meetings with all 17 employees has really improved the business where they encourage the company to speak up and be a part of the bigger picture. During these meetings they will look at Profit and Loss, different KPI, Key Performance Indicators, then they will wrap up the meetings with what they call Parking Lot issues, current topics and how to streamline them, achieve better from everyone.High Performance building comes up as the team has embraced it and will always try to sell certain details to all of their projects. This show has been a lot about what Frontiers calls Pre Construction Agreement, where it allows the client to commit to the project and allow access to Frontiers to take things to the next stage, Concept, Design and Budget Planning. The owners, James, Doug and Adam have created a business that encourages new hires to step up, learn new skills, and take the business to new heights.Shared and Discussed Linkshttps://www.coconstruct.com@fastidioustileandstonehttps://alliancegator.com/canada/gator-base/https://www.manulift.ca/en/https://www.siga.swiss/ca_enhttps://jeffreyscott.bizThank you so much James, Doug, Adam, Jeremy, Mac, Patt, Jesse and Graemefor joining the show and sharing so much.
