For new fit pros fresh off certification it can be very scary building a student base from scratch. Most certs don't teach you how to do that. So a lot of us end up working for someone else and getting churned and burned out of the industry because it's almost impossible to make a living wage from only instructor hourly pay from big box gyms. Not to say it can't be done. But let's just say that's why for so many fit pros the fitness gig is the ultimate side gig and never really rises to the level of a career. But what if you want more than a side gig? What if you need more? What if you're ready to elevate your professional credibility to a long and fulfilling career? That's our Work IN today. #234: Today's show was inspired by an article I saw on MSN. It was about the things Warren Buffet says broke people waste their money on. One of the best strategies to make sure you're headed in the right direction is to figure out how you can guarantee failure. Once you learn how to guarantee failure, avoid those things at all costs! Check out the show to learn the 10 things you'll want to be careful you're not wasting your money on. Some of these things might be robbing you of your future! If you don't want to take it from me, take it from Warren, one of the greatest investors of all time! Here are some great quotes from Mr. Buffet: “The most important investment you can make is in yourself. That's how knowledge builds up. Like compound interest.” “I'm not prude about it, but to quite an extent, gambling is a tax on ignorance.” “Do not save what is left after spending, but spend what is left after saving.” Check out the full MSN article. Let's face it, the fitness and wellness industry attracts all kinds of people and there are all kinds of ways to succeed in it. The assumption is that people who work in wellness, from instructors and trainers to studio and gym owners, are well. That these folks have already done their work and they are grounded, compassionate entrepreneurs who have their ego in check and the best interest of their students and employees at heart. Sadly that isn't always the case. In fact I would suggest that many of us are in the wellness and fitness community because while that's who we are striving to be, we aren't there yet and we know it. Without strong and grounded mentors and collaborators who are willing to tell the truth about this industry we can spend a lot of time floundering around trying to be something and someone we are not. To fit the woo woo wellness cookie cutter insisting we want to help others yet refusing to help ourselves first. The truth is we can't help anyone if we aren't in business, we can't stay in business if we don't get paid, and we can't get paid if we don't give people results beyond the woo woo wackadoodle world of wellness. Our work IN today is a look at how we as fit pros can find a balanced approach to the business of the body by grounding our business in the body.As a part of my mission to bring a legacy of resilience through movement, each month you can join me for a hike on the bike trail followed by a free trauma informed vinyasa class back at the studio on Main Street. Nick Melnyk took a chance in college and attended his first cycling class at the school's rec center. Monica the instructor, and bikes that go nowhere awakened his love of movement and nothing was ever the same after that.He began teaching various fitness formats and during his last college year heard about a new boutique studio opening and he applied to be front desk and instructor. It just so happened to be the very first CycleBar. Nick immediately fell in love with the community and after graduating in 2015 he joined the original CycleBar Franchising corporate team, taking the brand from 3 locations to the international brand it is today. As a FitPro Nick made his mark in the Cincinnati fitness scene as what was known as a CycleStar in those days, at Shred415 and other local studios. His experience both as a FitPro and working in Operations as he helped others open studios across the country gave him unique insight into the do's and don'ts of studio ownership. He knew early on that being an instructor would never be enough and studio ownership was his destiny. From investors, to partnerships that dissolved, to the increasingly high costs of opening a studio Nick was derailed from his dream time and time again but he did not give up. In February of 2023 Nyxx Studio opened in the community that raised this resilient FitPro. They offer rhythm based cycling classes and strength classes coming Spring 2024. How to read and interpret the alternative health science for wellness professionalsIn the trauma-informed space where movement, mental health and western medicine overlap, there is an expectation that as a wellness professional we are up to date on the latest science and most effective ways to help people optimize their health. There's an assumption in the US that we have proof of efficacy for all of our favorite mind body modalities through double blind controlled studies. The truth is the space between eastern and western medicine is filled with hope and unanswered questions. Today on the work IN we're discussing some of the difficulties with getting hard science when it comes to mind body modalities and what we do with answers that aren't what we hope for. It's time to stop working out and start working IN. This is as real as it gets. He's one of my best friends, we have trained together at Fitness Quest 10 since 2001, he has created a ton of IMPACT in the fitness industry…and he just had one of the toughest years any man or woman could ever imagine. You see, as this podcast drops, it's coincidentally one-year to the day that Brett's wife Lisa suffered a massive anyeurism at just age 44 and tragically passed away. And just like that, Brett became a “single-father” to his 10-year old Maddie and had to piece it all together. And unlike ANYTHING I have ever heard, Brett's strength, resilience, love, compassion, grace, and will to do good has shone a light like I've never seen before. My friends, what Brett has endured in the past year is living hell. But for him to get up on this podcast and share about it all just one-year to the day about the highs, lows, and everything in between is truly remarkable. You are in for one heckua humanly experience for the next hour. And I'm convinced this is going to make you a better person simply by listening to it. Buckle-up. Here we go… Here is what Brett & I discuss on today's IMPACT SHOW podcast: 7 Rapid fire-questions to catch Brett off-guard. Haha… Most challenging year of your life. Why? Brett shares his top 3 lessons that have become the centerpiece of life dealing with this deep tragic loss. How do you manage your darkest moments? What experiences, mindset, or tools do you think allows you to manage those? Are you finding joy/happiness in the day to day and if so, HOW? What would you share with someone who has experienced serious recent loss in their life? How has your experience with loss and grief impacted your business and your life? Tell me about how you're helping people with your Energy100 program. What do you find is the biggest barrier to how people feel on a day to day basis? If there was one thing people could start doing right now to feel or perform better in their life, what would that be? My friends, there is just no way you can listen to this episode and not be better for it. Please, do me a favor…SHARE IT. It brings out such poignancy to the mere fact that we must LIVE & LOVE life, even when you do experience LOSS. Brett Klika is a great example of this to us and I'm so proud to call him a friend. A few things. Please be sure to follow Brett and his amazing journey on IG at @Bklika and you can check out his website at www.BrettKlika.com. I've literally been waiting for this episode since June when Christine Conti won the prestigious IDEA 2023 Fitness Instructor of the Year in Los Angeles, CA. Yes, I had to wait to record this one so I could be LIVE at the Jersey Shore with my fellow Brick, NJ, fit-fam friend in her podcast studio (Two Fit Crazies & a Microphone). This episode could easily be called “2 Fire-breathing dragons (literally) and a microphone” and you will see WHY during the show. Christine Conti has one heckuva story that epitomizes her “Yes You Can” mentality, attitude, and brand. After receiving a life-changing diagnosis at age 30, this former investment banker and English teacher first transformed her life…and now she transforms others. She's a chronic disease specialist, a best-selling author, a keynote speaker, and life-transformer. She truly is a woman of IMPACT and she's determined to show the world that ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE! Here is specifically what I cover on this week's IMPACT SHOW: A walk-down memory lane from our cherished memories in Brick, NJ (both of our hometown's), including an interesting story when we first met and how that was part of Christine's journey to leave teaching. Hey, it's not my fault! ☺ We talk about Christine's journey, a truly inspiring and mind-blowing ascent, going from a career in investment banking to teaching, then finding her way to the Fit-Pro life! And now she's a world-recognized chronic disease wellness specialist, author, speaker, podcaster, IRONMAN, and a guide for athletes with diseases and disabilities. Why does she believe in the mantra “Yes, you can” and lives by it every day. We go through the moment in her life, her “Come to Jesus” moment, and how she, like all of us, got through challenging periods where she questioned her sanity, thinking she's crazy, but how that led her to her true purpose. A reminder that only the “crazies” can change the world! We talked about her best-selling book, SPLIT-SECOND COURAGE. What does that mean? That is “your ability to make a choice at a split second and not think back, not regret it, not hesitate, not balk. You've had enough experiences, you know how to handle the repercussions of the decision you make. You have the coping mechanisms, you have the techniques in place so that whatever decision you make, you're going to handle it.” Christine's mental toughness is a force to reckon with - she's competed in Ironman races, a 100-mile race, and many other endurance and fitness events. Where that comes from? Why she and her co-host Brian Prendergast have such a good time on their podcast, “Two Fit-Crazies & a Microphone. What's next for Christine Conti? I had a blast doing this in-person interview at the Jersey Shore. It was truly awesome to be “home” and inspiring to connect with Christine and share her story with you. Please share this episode with anyone you might know who you believe this would provide value to. Please also snap a picture on and post a picture on your IG or IG stories.
