Send us a textWhat if our problem isn't that we disagree—but that we've forgotten how? Robert Reich joins us at a 50th reunion event hosted by the Center on Civility and Democratic Engagement to map the terrain of modern incivility and show a clearer path forward. We explore why trust in institutions fell from a broad majority in the 1960s to a small minority today, how geographic tribalism narrows our circles, and why the most honest political conversations often start with work, wages, and family budgets rather than party labels. We connect the dots between stagnant median wages since the late 1970s, the three coping strategies families used to stay afloat, and the deep disillusionment that followed the financial crisis. That shared frustration fueled both Tea Party and Occupy, and later boosted candidates who promised to “shake up the system” across the spectrum. Reich explains how these economic realities power today's anger—and how smart policy, from stronger safety nets to public investment and money‑in‑politics reform, can reduce the pressure that polarizes us.Then we turn the lens on media incentives. Outrage grabs attention, and attention pays. Reich pulls back the curtain on the production choices that amplify conflict and argues for rewarding outlets and leaders who model respect without pulling punches. Throughout, we return to an old idea with fresh urgency: civic virtue as public deliberation. Think eloquent listening—asking better questions, restating opposing views fairly, and staying open to being moved. From family tables to classrooms to city halls, these habits make conflict useful again and rebuild trust one conversation at a time.If this resonates, share it with someone who sees the world differently, subscribe for more candid conversations, and leave a review with one story that changed your mind. The Labor Department reported September jobs numbers on Thursday, showing employers added 119,000 jobs to the economy but also an increase in unemployment to 4.4 percent. “The September report shows fairly good job growth, but every other report we have for October shows a slowdown,” says Robert Reich, the former secretary of labor under President Bill Clinton.“Real wages — that is, wages adjusted for inflation — are going down for most people. The bottom 90 percent of Americans are in very bad shape,” says Reich. This week on The Intercept Briefing, host Akela Lacy speaks to the professor, author, and longtime commentator about the economy and the state of Democratic Party politics under Trump. “The only people who are doing well, who are keeping the economy going through their purchases, are the top 10 percent, and they're basically doing well because they're the ones who own most of the shares of stock,” says Reich. “What happens when and if the stock market implodes?”Reich has been beating the drum on poverty and inequality for decades. And while that message took some time to hit the mainstream, it seems to be hitting home now more than ever, but Democratic leadership continues to fall flat in conveying they understand the urgency of the economic hardships ordinary Americans face. The answer, Reich says, is new leadership. He is disappointed in Democrats who caved to Trump on the government shutdown. “It's another example of the Democrats not having enough backbone,” Reich says. “I think Chuck Schumer has to go. And Jeffries too.” He adds, “I'm 79 years old. I have standing to speak about the fact that there is a time to move on. And I think that the Democratic leaders today should move on.”Listen to the full conversation of The Intercept Briefing. You can support our work at theintercept.com/join. Robert Reich wrote on his substack for September 16, One study found that half of Americans expect a second civil war to happen "in the next few years," even if the specifics vary according to one's politics and imagination. On the other hand, unlike the Civil War of 1861-1865, no particular issue — like slavery back then — pulls the nation apart. While immigration, crime, abortion, and LGBTQ+ rights are controversial, none of these seem to elicit the anger and passions that might generate civil war. Nor are we enduring an economic calamity, pandemic, world war, or other national cataclysm that might force Americans to take sides. While we are not experiencing a singular polarizing issue like Slavery, and though we can't point to a singular economic calamity that brought this on, it is in fact  decades of economic factors and now a looming economic disaster that has put us here.  We've managed to create an economy over a half century that excludes, then isolates individuals by limiting access to everything from communications to housing, your home sitting at the apex of human need. Socially we tell the newly minted abandoned economic nomads that it's their fault.  Our systems and our leaders constantly remind them in a myriad of ways that they don't have what it takes to 'make it'. Then we forget these individuals unless or until they commit a mass shooting, or we find them dead of an overdose behind the Walgreens. Maybe just maybe they are thought of by elected officials from time to time when their votes are needed.    My thoughts on our society have been shaped in part by my experiences as a youngster with poverty.  My young life started stable and solidly middle class then descended, through family circumstance, into the grips of poverty. Don't get me wrong, I have countless fond memories from my upbringing. Here though, I'd rather for a moment focus on our experiences that represent the other side of growing up in America. Growing up poor in America. A friend once recounted the quote, 'the only thing worse than a country full of have-nots is a country full of used-to-haves'. We are a country massed with people who know what they are missing. For decades, some of us were building a society based on creativity, positive energy, robust education…… for some of us while for others,  we've built a society where resentment, economic fear, shame for your economic status; we took this underbelly of societal cancer and metastasized it. We've turned grief into grievance. We've given nearly all the worst in each and every one of us a voice and put it to work in the service of accelerating the downward spiral that enriches an ever smaller number of our neighbors.  I am the product of the 1980's.  My life has occurred during the dismantling of the New Deal.  I'm also proud of my family's immigrant heritage.  I believe in the countless individual stories that make up the story of North America.  That tell us the story of the American Experiment.  The community in central Massachusetts where I grew up was no stranger to global changes in the economy, albeit being in the northeast meant we were spared the very worst of de-industrialization until well into the early aughts.   Our family suffered a divorce, not an affliction caused by economics but one that significantly altered the economic trajectory of our little family.  What's so striking to me to this day, is the dichotomy between those that were always there to help, with those community members who suddenly discovered, to my little mind, that we had committed a grave transgression.  Did they think we'd give them the flu?  Was it something Mom said? Do I have something on my shirt?  You see it when people look just above your head into the distance when you approach.  You begin to understand that some people still have what you once had and they might even be taking it for granted.   People stopped talking to us at church. The farther we got away from affluence, the further folks seemed to get away from us.  I was learning a seminal point that we don't like to tell ourselves about ourselves.  For all that Americans can be wonderfully gracious when called upon, there are just as many of us who long ago gave into the desire of self-preservation by blaming others when those others need help. By keeping a distance from the affliction of poverty.  Maybe just maybe by doing so, we won't get any on us.  Except the churning economic deprivation knows no boundaries.  Doesn't stop for anything.  Denying our systems have been kicking people to the side of the road, while kicking the Spector of debt, failed systems and social ills down the road, has left us in grave peril. Frank Zappa said, 'The illusion of freedom will continue as long as it's profitable to continue the illusion. At the point where the illusion becomes too expensive to maintain, they will just take down the scenery, they will pull back the curtains, they will move the tables and chairs out of the way and you will see the brick wall at the back of the theater'. I fear that the show is about to be over.  _________   History.  It's what keeps me getting up every morning. It's what keeps me trying with all my might to build more housing, to build new companies and to write like this.  We've been here before.  This isn't our first Gilded Age.  We've lived with the presence of Jim Crow and widespread open bigotry and classism; tools used to split the populace to the benefit of the elite. The Klan marched 30K plus in Washington, DC in 1923.  They also tried to march on my very hometown in 1924, immigrants including some family members stopped them in their tracks at the town border.  People get pissed, it turns out, when they know what they're missing.  If you think you can write, then write.  If you can organize, then organize.  Reach out to just one person, commiserate, and grow your group from there.  There is strength in numbers.  When you see an injustice, you really should call it out.  Remember the Zappa quote?  Demand a refund on your ticket. Demand a free and fair election. Demand a more inclusive economy.  Participate in solutions.  Create the right, instead of avenging the wrong.  Most importantly, Love one another.

Dwight D. Eisenhower was born in Denison, Texas, in 1890. He was the President of the United States when I was born in Dallas, Texas, 68 years later.People called me “Little Roy.” People called him “Ike.”I worry that we have forgotten him.Ike Eisenhower graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1915 when he was 24 years old. His superiors noticed his organizational abilities, and appointed him commander of a tank training center during World War I.In 1933, he became aide to Army Chief of Staff General Douglas MacArthur, and in 1935 Ike went with him to the Philippines when MacArthur accepted the post of chief military adviser to that nation's government. On June 25, 1942, Ike Eisenhower was chosen over 366 senior officers to lead the Armed Forces of the United States in World War II.After proving himself on the battlefields of North Africa and Italy in 1942 and 1943, Ike Eisenhower was appointed supreme commander of Operation Overlord – the Allied invasion of northwestern Europe.Ike was now commanding the Armed Forces of all 49 Allied nations – including Great Britain, the Soviet Union, and China – in the war against Hitler and his minions. He personally planned and supervised two of the most consequential military campaigns of World War II: Operation Torch in the North Africa campaign in 1942–1943 and the invasion of Normandy in 1944.Ike Eisenhower never talked like a tough guy, but only a fool would call him “weak” or “woke.”This past July, Robert Reich – an eloquent and intelligent spokesperson on the left – quoted a passage from an anti-war speech that Ike Eisenhower made at the beginning of his presidency in 1953. Reich ended his quote just prior to Ike's unsettling reference to the crucifixion of Christ.Eloquent and intelligent people on the right refused to believe that a celebrated warrior had ever made a speech that could be classified as “anti-war.”Curious, I decided to get to the bottom of it.Here is a link to the complete transcript and original recording of the speech that President Dwight D. Eisenhower made before the American Society of Newspaper Editors on April 16, 1953, from the Statler Hotel in Washington, D.C.This is the passage from that speech that got everyone worked up:“Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. The cost of one modern heavy bomber is this: a modern brick school in more than 30 cities. It is two electric power plants, each serving a town of 60,000 population. It is two fine, fully equipped hospitals, it is some 50 miles of concrete pavement. We pay for a single fighter plane with a half million bushels of wheat. We pay for a single destroyer with new homes that could have housed more than 8,000 people. This is, I repeat, the best way of life to be found on the road the world has been taking. This is not a way of life at all, in any true sense. Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron.”The title of that speech was originally “Chance for Peace,” but due to the vivid mental image contained in the middle of the speech, it quickly became known as the “Cross of Iron” speech.Words have impact when they contain vivid mental images.I own guns, but I am not a hunter. Neither my family nor my friends have ever seen my guns. But in the unlikely event of a home invasion, I am adequately prepared to protect

Laura speaks to organizers in western North Carolina one year after Hurricane HeleneThis show is made possible by you! To become a sustaining member go to LauraFlanders.org/donateDescription:  When Hurricane Helene hit western North Carolina in September 2024, it came as a shock, hitting mountains, not coasts, and flooding rivers and communities with little experience of dealing with hurricanes. Helene quickly became one of the worst storms to ever hit the U.S., and in the absence of a quick response by state or federal government, other groups flooded in. Right-wing actors took advantage of the chaos, spreading rumors about looting and trying to boost their image. But it's the mutual aid networks — some long standing, others new that responded with creative, effective strategies to distribute water, medicine and help communities rebuild. In this episode, Laura Flanders heads to some of the hardest-hit areas in western North Carolina and speaks with community activists to hear the lessons to be learned for the future. Amid Trump cuts to FEMA and the National Weather Service, the future for storm recovery in North Carolina is uncertain. But one thing's for sure — mutual aid support like Pansy Collective, Cherokee One Feather, Racial Justice Coalition (RJC), Rural Organizing and Resilience (ROAR) and Collaborativa La Milpa have the strategies and solutions we may all need for survival.“It takes the state a long time to mobilize, and that might continue to be true as FEMA gets defunded . . . It's imperative that people fight to keep their disaster response funding, but until then, we need to know how to respond ourselves.” - RT“We were talking to the people that were staying in hotels because they had just lost everything and didn't know where they were going to get their next meal or their medicine. He lays out how Trump's White House distorts economic data, bullies CEOs, corrupts crypto markets, and undermines global alliances, while billionaires and media titans enable his rise. Reich also calls out cowardice among university leaders, corporate chiefs, and even Democrats who should be defending constitutional freedoms but instead bow to fear and greed. From Disney's censorship of Jimmy Kimmel to the silence of Silicon Valley, he argues that ordinary citizens may have to step in where elites have failed. In this episode of One Decision, hosts Christina Ruffini and former U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta sit down with Robert Reich, former Labor Secretary under President Bill Clinton, to discuss his new book, Coming Up Short. Reich reflects on how decades of widening inequality, corporate money in politics, and missteps in the implementation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA)—along with China's entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO)—paved the way for Donald Trump's rise. Reich and Panetta reflect on what both political parties missed, why Washington drifted into dysfunction, and how the coming wave of AI could deepen inequality unless new policies—from national service to profit-sharing—take hold. Episode produced by Situation Room Studios. Original music composed and produced by Leo Sidran.

To become a sustaining member go to LauraFlanders.org/donateDescription:  The crisis we're in was a long time coming. Now that we're here, what do we do about it? Returning to the show, former Labor Secretary and longtime professor Robert Reich joins Laura Flanders to discuss two bullies tormenting U.S. democracy: concentrated wealth and corporate power. As Reich shares, growing income inequality yields corruption in our politics and economy. No one election will change everything, but that's not a reason not to act, and act quickly to defeat the Trump administration — in Congress, and at the polls. Reich's latest Substack, “Should Democrats Shut Down the Government?” presents some ideas. Reich's latest book is “Coming Up Short: A Memoir of My America”. Will Rogers joked that when thousands of rural Oklahomans fled the 1930s Dust Bowl and migrated to California: “It raised the intellectual level of both states.”Following that line of thought, it occurred to me that America could benefit mightily if the Democratic Party's overbearing corporate contingent were to migrate to their natural domain, the Republican Party. Seriously, as Robert Reich recently wrote: “Who in the world needs corporate Democrats?”Thomas Jefferson warned of the democracy-crushing threat of America's emerging “moneyed corporations.” And, sure enough, here they are today – literally owning the White House, Congress, Judiciary, most state governments… and suppressing democracy itself. They're entrenched not because they're championed by the Republican Party, but because the once-proud party of America's broad working class has also yoked itself to corporate money and embraced Republican policies of corporate supremacy. Where does that leave the great majority of working stiffs on election day? Staying home, feeling abandoned as both parties cater to the moneyed elite. While many corporate Democrats insist they're “social progressives,” it would be a profound public service for them to carry those social values directly into Republican primaries, softening that party's raw minginess a bit. At the same time, their departure would free the Democratic Party from being financially shackled to the corporate agenda, letting it return to its roots as the unequivocating champion of working-class, little-d democrats.By clarifying the core policy differences of both parties, elections could matter to most people again, presenting honest choices between a democratic or a plutocratic future. Pie-in-the-sky? Maybe, or even probably. But baking a pie starts by turning on the heat.Jim Hightower's Lowdown is a reader-supported publication. The title is a nod to his height — just under 5 feet — but also to a country that, he argues, has fallen short of its ideals. He offers a blueprint for how to find its way back. In this episode, Bob reflects on the moments — and music — that shaped his politics: being bullied as a child, narrowly avoiding the Vietnam draft, and his love for Dolly Parton's “9 to 5.” Here are his songs. There's little question anymore that political elites—Democrats and Republicans alike—are part of a so-called "Uniparty" controlled by billionaire interests, and both parties cater to the same oligarchs rather than the public.  Jimmy and Americans' Comedian Kurt Metzger discuss former Clinton era labor secretary Robert Reich's appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, where the two agree that it's necessary to get big money out of politics, but they expose their own hypocrisy given that Democratic campaigns often outpace Republicans in billionaire backing.  Jimmy points out that economic inequality has worsened instead of improving under both Democrats and Republicans, in particular citing the 2008 bank bailout without reforms, while he also notes that Democrats talk a big game about promoting democracy but rig their own primaries across election cycles.  Plus segments on a Nebraska town hall audience jeering at GOP Rep Mike Flood after he gaslit them about universal healthcare and Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro responding to the FBI's $50 million bounty on him by offering his own $50 million reward for anyone sharing the full, unedited Epstein client list. Also featuring Mike MacRae and Stef Zamorano. And a phone call from Liam Neeson!

Former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich argues that reversing the Citizens United decision is key to reclaiming America's democracy, and that a new progressive era would follow as a result. He also comments on the societal factors that may have opened a path to the presidency for Donald Trump, and argues that America veered off the path of progress in the 1980s. Katrina vanden Heuvel, editor and publisher of The Nation, will comment.Plus: Robert Reich says the origin of our troubles with Trump and MAGA go back to the sixties; he says it started with the sixties movements – which created “a giant political void that would eventually be filled by Donald Trump's angry, bigoted cultural populism.” His new memoir is “Coming Up Short.”Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Democrats have abandoned the working class, according to former Labor Secretary Robert Reich, leading working people to fall for President Trump's hollow and hateful cultural populism. But he argues that an economic populist message that exposes how corporations and wealthy people abuse their power could turn the tide. Kara and Reich discuss how that would work in practice, why Democrats have repeatedly sided with Wall Street, how Americans should fight back against Trump's fascist tendencies, and other questions drawn from his upcoming memoir, Coming Up Short: A Memoir of My America. Plus, Reich answers an “expert question” from his longtime debate partner, former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers. Questions? Comments? Last week, the House passed a sweeping budget bill, the centerpiece of President Donald Trump's domestic agenda. The final vote was 215 to 214, just one vote shy of failure, with all but two Republicans supporting the package. Now, all eyes are on the Senate. It's their job to take the legislation over the finish line and deliver it to the president's desk.Headlines about the bill are focused on tax cuts for the wealthy and steep cuts to programs like Medicaid and food stamps. But buried in this 1,100-page bill are a host lot of lesser-known provisions about immigration, artificial intelligence, and even one that would limit the courts' power by stripping away any consequences for officials who ignore judges' rulings. That last one is akin to "crowning Trump King" according to former U.S. Labor Secretary Robert Reich. We discuss what's in the fine print and what it means for Americans. Want to support 1A? As today's guest, Robert Reich, former US Secretary of Labor, wrote in his substack “Brace yourselves. The economy is heading into very bad weather.” That while prices and unemployment are going up. Everything else is going down. This is, of course, the polar opposite of what President Trump campaigned on, and exactly we, the president's opposition said he would do. If anything good is going to emerge from this nightmare, it's going to take the majority of us uniting to collectively demand it. That we can't just be AGAINST this hideous, lawless, authoritarian version of America, where our President is a corrupt grifter surrounded by other grifters, we have to be FOR something better. That perhaps the silver lining of this horror will be the coalitions being built to fight the regime finding common ground on which to build something that finally works for all of us.  As always, if you find worth in what we do, please consider SUBSCRIBING to PoliticsGirl Premium.
