Happy 2023, friends! As this podcast celebrates 2 years, I like to reflect on the journey of this milestone, while also thinking about the goals and plans for the upcoming year. I have to admit that I'm not into making resolutions, for I tend to make them specific, which then ultimately, I end up not following through. Instead, I make a ‘more and less list'. So in the spirit of resolutions, in today's episode, I'm sharing my ‘more and less list' for literacy teachers.Download my Free Word of the Day: Context Clue Routine here!Join us in the Stellar Teacher Reading Membership: stellarteacher.com/membershipTo check out all of the resources from this episode, head to the show notes: https://www.stellarteacher.com/episode115
As we get closer to the New Year, there is a lot of discussion about resolutions and goal setting as we look ahead at what we want to accomplish in the upcoming year. This episode is more than just New Year's resolution tips, information about New Year's resolutions, and how to keep them. Instead, of focusing on lofty goals, I'll share with you the power that one thoughtfully and carefully chosen word can have on reaching your goals in the upcoming year. In this episode, I'll explain why I believe so strongly in having a Word-of-the-Year and how to choose your Word-of-the-Year. I'll also explain how having a Word-of-the-Year instead of a resolution can keep you focused on your goals so that you can create the personal and professional life you want and deserve. Is there a need to negotiate your salary after receiving a job offer? Are there other benefits that you can still negotiate after you receive a job offer?A lot of job seekers and employees stop negotiations after they receive a job offer, especially if the offer has met their expectations. In this episode, I will share my thoughts on why you should not stop negotiating. I will share steps that you can take so you can meet your salary expectations and so much more. And I will also share a negotiation script that you can use and some of my clients' experiences with negotiating salaries even after receiving a job offer. In This Podcast We Talk About:What the topic of the episode is all about.Three critical steps you need to take when negotiating your salary after receiving a job offer. What do you need to negotiate aside from your salary? My Salary Negotiation Script.About Me:I started my career like many people do: in an entry level role making around $35K a year, was the first to arrive and last to leave, putting a 110% into my job…But it wasn't enough.I was consistently being passed up for promotions and realized I was being underpaid compared to my colleagues.I knew that in order to get ahead in my career and be able to make the money I wanted… to support the lifestyle I wanted…something had to change. So, I started investing in myself. I worked with a career coach, resume writer, read every career book that I could get my hands on, enrolled in career courses, and studied colleagues wo seemed to be crushing it in their careers. And after investing over $20,000 in resources, coaches, and books…and spending thousands of hours over five years…I realized that many of the common advice out there did NOT move the needle when it came to advancing your career!Instead, I handpicked and carefully selected what worked to create my now signature program, 90-Day Job Offer, that is unlike anything that is out there. I wish a program like this existed when I was going through my career advancement and salary negotiations. If so, it would have been a fraction of the cost and saved me over four years of frustration of trial-and-error.Since then, my clients have taken my ready-to-use resources to advance their careers in 90-days or less, and secured on average a 56% increase in salary (to date my clients have received $30,000 - $120,000 in additional earned income per year)!!I help women in technology land fulfilling, high-paying jobs at a company that values and appreciates them. I'm on a mission to help women in tech collectively earn over a $1M in the next year. Will you join me?Links Mentioned:Get my FREE Word-for-Word Salary Negotiation Script here:https://keap.page/fxp705/10k-salary-negotiation-script.html Get to know more about My 90-Day Job Offer Program here: https://keap.page/fxp705/template-accept-payment-mobile.html Book your Complimentary Career Strategy Call here:https://keap.page/fxp705/career-strategy-call.html Roadmap to the Executive Suite: https://www.roadmaptotheexecutivesuite.com/

Photo: 1899 poster: La libre parole [The Free Word], the great daily political magazine. 1899 - Affiche - La libre parole, grand journal politique quotidien 3/4 Revolution Française: Emmanuel Macron and the quest to reinvent a nation, by Sophie Pedder. Hardcover – August 14, 2018 He emerged from nowhere to seize the presidency, defeat populism and upend French party politics. Who is Emmanuel Macron? How far can he really change France? In Revolution Française, Sophie Pedder examines the first year in office of France's youngest and most exciting president in modern times, with unique perspective from her time as head of The Economist's Paris bureau. President Emmanuel Macron's vision for France is far more radical than many realize. His remarkable ascent from obscurity to the presidency is both a dramatic story of personal ambition and the tale of a wounded once-proud country in deep need of renewal. What shaped this enigmatic character, the precociously bright student and talented networker from northern France; the philosophy graduate and Rothschild banker who married his school drama teacher? How did a political outsider manage to defy the unwritten rules of the Fifth Republic and secure the presidency at his first attempt? And what are the underlying ideas behind his vision? This book chronicles Macron's remarkable rise from independent outsider to the Élysée Palace, situating the achievement in a broader context: France's slide into self-doubt, political gridlock and a seeming reluctance to embrace change; the roots of populism and discontent; the fractures caused by globalization and the Le Pen factor. Looking back on the young president's dramatic first year in power, with analysis of his key reforms and lofty ambitions, it asks how far it is possible for Macron to reinvent a conservative nation uneasy about embracing the future. Can the man nicknamed 'Jupiter' really return France to its former greatness, or will he, by the time his mandate expires, end up as just another side note in political history? Punctuated with first-hand conversations and reporting, this book takes on all of these questions, concluding with a fascinating and exclusive interview with Macron recorded in early 2018. Pedder's riveting, and essential, book will be one of the most captivating political books of this year.

"We laugh bent double, tears in our eyes, though the laughing don’t laugh out the sadness. We laugh until our shoulders pulse to breathless sobs. Taste the salt from our eyes and sweet from our nostrils. Shake off the shame flaked like dead skin around us. Sweep what the wind is too weak to carry. Keep a small mound for the corner shrine, to wonder on how that dust was first a fist, a heavy silence, rejection and fight." Listen to Writer, Poet and Musician Brother Portrait's piece 'Hold Me Through These Dreams', commissioned by Free Word for How To Be Kind. @freewordcentre freeword.org
"I was thinking a lot about mindfulness. How it can help with noticing when we are being cruel to ourselves which then leads us to gently adjust ourselves back to kind thoughts. I think mindfulness can be a great teacher of kindness as it requires one to be radically honest with themselves in order to become mindful of one's full self and surroundings. In this poem the shadow is that part of the poet that is confronted with this personal radical truth that shows the hard emotional and spiritual work it takes to cultivate loving kindness of self. Ultimately, even though it's kinda long, it pays off to be kind to ourselves in order to be kind(er) to those around us." Listen to Writer and Poet Belinda Zhawi’s ‘be kind to your shadow’, commissioned by Free Word for How To Be Kind. @freewordcentre freeword.org

This episode is dedicated to Nurcan Baysal who is a Kurdish journalist and a human rights activist from Turkey. Few months ago I taught her in an advanced class here in London. A week later I went to a panel discussion with her in Free Word in Farringdon. I had been invited to this event by my colleague Billie, an English teacher, who also features in this episode. Essentially, the episode is a series of monologues and dialogues with Billie and also my cousin Honza who as we know knows a lot about history. We try to offer our view on censorship in Turkey, explain who the Kurds are, and try to break down what has been going on in Turkey. I hope we managed to do justice to Nurcan's unrelenting effort and work. I don't normally do heavier topics like this on my podcast, but I think if approached in the right way, they can have a powerful effect on the audience and I am convinced this was the right thing to do.
Words are powerful! For the past four years, I've chosen a Word for the Year. Choosing ONE WORD to focus on every day, all year long takes intentionality and commitment. The word may sum up who you want to be or how you want to live–and beyond shaping your year, it can truly help to shape you into your best REALSELF. Most years, my word has come fairly quickly or easily, but coming into this new year and decade, I struggled to find my word! To be honest, I was a little frustrated! However, just last week a friend said a word aloud and it hit me like a ton of bricks! I knew the word was just for me! I'm not certain all that my word will mean this year, but I'm embracing it FULL CIRCLE! On this episode: I'll share my Word for the Year We'll talk about how choosing a word can set your intention for the year I'll share a REALIFE example of how integrating the Word for the Year with the Harmony Enneagram can help you show up as your most authentic self So what about you? The sound of the Qur’an read aloud is a cultural signifier used across media and the arts to indicate the presence of Muslims and of Islamic religious expression. But how often do you hear the Qur’an recited in public by someone who isn’t a man? Marking both International Women’s Day 2019, and the first event of All The Ways We Could Grow, Inclusive Mosque Initiative (IMI), supported by Free Word, presents a discussion on the significance of recitation as a tradition of liturgy and the representation of female and non-binary Muslim voices within this tradition. Chaired by IMI Trustee Halima Gosai Hussain, the conversation features peace activist and writer Madinah Javed and IMI Trustee Wasi Daniju. In this podcast you'll also find melodic recitations from the final chapters of the Qur’an as well as an exclusive trailer to IMI's upcoming digital sound installation - which you can preview here. #AllTheWaysWeCouldGrow Instagram/Twitter/Facebook: @freewordcentre freeword.org

How is music that reflects the lives of marginalised youths on inner-city estates treated in the UK, and what does this say about the censoring of certain voices and communities? With Grime MC P Money, DJ A.G, Drill Producer Carns Hill and Journalist Ciaran Thapar. Already internationally acclaimed, Han Kang is considered one of the most important writers from Korea. For her new novel, 'Human Acts', Han points her penetrating literary talents to South Korea's difficult and repressed recent past. Starting with the violent suppression of the 1980s student uprisings in Gwangju, the book follows the survivors as they live with the trauma through the decades and the unending personal and political effect it had on the nation. Psychoanalyst and writer, Susie Orbach, discussed 'Human Acts' with Han, talking about this novel and how Han explores trauma, reconciliation and the soul of a country. They were also joined by Han's translator, Deborah Smith. Wanderlust: Great Literature from Around the World is a monthly event series at Free Word. Mikhail Bulgakov’s 'The Master and Margarita' is an essential work of twentieth-century Russian literature, and the writer's persecution, along with his personal and artistic struggles with the Soviet authorities, is documented in his 'Diaries and Letters', which offer a captivating portrayal of a prodigiously talented writer who feels his talent going to waste. Two renowned translators of Bulgakov's work; Hugh Aplin, translator of 'The Master and Margarita', and Roger Cockrell, translator of Bulgakov’s 'Diaries and Selected Letters', discussed the publishing history of Bulgakov’s work, the challenges of translating his unique prose and issues of freedom of expression in the context of these texts. Gabriela Babnik’s novel, 'Dry Season' (translated by Rawley Grau), breaks the mould of what we usually expect from a writer from a small, Central European nation. Winner of the European Union Prize for Literature in 2013, 'Dry Season' offers a truly global perspective as it explores themes of racism, the role of women in modern society, and the loneliness of the human condition. The author and the translator joined in conversation at Free Word Centre, with chair Ranka Primorac, to focus on both the themes and the language of the book, as well as the intricacies of translating from a Slavic language to English and writing on the world stage from the perspective of a 'small language'. At a time when Britain's continued membership of both the European Union and the European Convention of Human Rights is the subject of active discussion, Free Word and English PEN have invited five leading writers and thinkers to address - in a series of essays and a discussion - the question of our future relationship with Europe and what might be the new narratives for Europe in an interdependent world. In 2013 President Barroso put out a call to citizens for a "new narrative" for Europe. The idea of Europe - born from the devastation wrought by two world wars and then later strengthened by the reunification of Europe after the fall of the Berlin Wall - was, he acknowledged, in crisis. What, he asked, is Europe's role in the world today? How can it become a genuine and effective political body able to rise to the challenges facing European citizens today, engaging in the global issues of our times, protecting commonly held values around democracy, human rights and free expression, and supporting the sciences and the arts to generate new and radical ways of thinking. In launching the call President Barroso highlighted the role of culture and stories; "At a time when culture is perceived as optional rather than essential, It has become difficult to tell each other the simplest of stories, let alone articulate compelling narratives about the values that underpin our society. Yet now is the moment for compelling narratives rather than simple number crunching." Following discussions in Berlin, Brussels, Milan and Warsaw, the debate now comes to London. Join Gabriel Gbadamosi, Xiaolu Guo, A.L.Kennedy, Can Yeginsu and Rosie Goldsmith for a discussion about what Europe means to us.

Climate change is described by many as one of the most urgent and important stories of our time, but it can also seem difficult, confusing - even boring. The last great surge of media attention occurred in the late-2000s, after which the dominant narrative came under bitter and sustained attack. But are there other ways of telling stories about climate change that support a better quality of understanding and debate? Listen to an informed panel and audience discuss the different ways we can tell stories about our environment in this event hosted at Free Word Centre, organised by the Mediating Change group (based at the Open University), the Ashden Trust and Free Word.
