fWotD Episode 2760: The Importance of Being Earnest Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Sunday, 24 November 2024 is The Importance of Being Earnest. The Importance of Being Earnest, a Trivial Comedy for Serious People is a play by Oscar Wilde, the last of his four drawing-room plays, following Lady Windermere's Fan (1892), A Woman of No Importance (1893) and An Ideal Husband (1895). First performed on 14 February 1895 at the St James's Theatre in London, it is a farcical comedy depicting the tangled affairs of two young men about town who lead double lives to evade unwanted social obligations, both assuming the name Ernest while wooing the two young women of their affections. The play, celebrated for its wit and repartee, parodies contemporary dramatic norms, gently satirises late Victorian manners, and introduces – in addition to the two pairs of young lovers – the formidable Lady Bracknell, the fussy governess Miss Prism and the benign and scholarly Canon Chasuble. Contemporary reviews in Britain and overseas praised the play's humour, although some critics had reservations about its lack of social messages. The successful opening night marked the climax of Wilde's career but was followed within weeks by his downfall. The Marquess of Queensberry, whose son Lord Alfred Douglas was Wilde's lover, unsuccessfully schemed to throw a bouquet of rotten vegetables at the playwright at the end of the performance. This feud led to a series of legal trials from March to May 1895 which resulted in Wilde's conviction and imprisonment for homosexual acts. Despite the play's early success, Wilde's disgrace caused it to be closed in May after 86 performances. After his release from prison in 1897 he published the play from exile in Paris, but he wrote no more comic or dramatic works. From the early 20th century onwards the play has been revived frequently in English-speaking countries and elsewhere. After the first production, which featured George Alexander, Allan Aynesworth and Irene Vanbrugh among others, many actors have been associated with the play, including Mabel Terry-Lewis, John Gielgud, Edith Evans, Margaret Rutherford, Martin Jarvis, Nigel Havers and Judi Dench. The role of the redoubtable Lady Bracknell has sometimes been played by men. The Importance of Being Earnest has been adapted for radio from the 1920s onwards and for television since the 1930s, filmed for the cinema on three occasions (directed by Anthony Asquith in 1952, Kurt Baker in 1992 and Oliver Parker in 2002) and turned into operas and musicals. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:30 UTC on Sunday, 24 November 2024.For the full current version of the article, see The Importance of Being Earnest on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm long-form Patrick.

Welcome to this festive episode of the Edition podcast, where we will be taking you through the pages of The Spectator's special Christmas triple issue.  Up first: What a year in politics it has been. 2023 has seen scandals, sackings, arrests and the return of some familiar faces. It's easy to forget that at the start of the year Nicola Sturgeon was still leader of the SNP! To make sense of it all is editor of The Spectator, Fraser Nelson, The Spectator's political editor Katy Balls, and Quentin Letts, sketch writer for the Daily Mail. (01:06) Next: The story that has dominated the pages of The Spectator in the latter half of this year is of course the conflict in Gaza. Writing in the Christmas magazine, Milbank Family Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution and Bloomberg Opinion columnist Niall Ferguson discusses the history of generational divide when it comes to geopolitical conflicts. This is partly inspired by a piece that Douglas Murray wrote earlier in the year, pointing out the generational divide in the Anglosphere when it comes to support for either Israel or Palestine. They both join the podcast to ask why the kids aren't all right? (19:29) Then: In the Christmas magazine this year Charles Moore discusses the divine comedy of PG Wodehouse, and discloses to readers the various literary and biblical references contained within The Code of the Woosters. To unpack the Master's references further and discuss the genius of Wodehouse, Charles is joined by evolutionary biologist and author, Richard Dawkins. (41:03)  And finally: who would put on a village Christmas play?  This is the question Laurie Graham asks in her piece for The Spectator where she rues her decision to once again take charge of her community's Christmas play. It's a struggle that our own William Moore knows all too well. He has written and will star in his local village Christmas play this year. Laurie and William join  the podcast to discuss how to put on a great Christmas play. (57:30).  Throughout the podcast you will also hear from The Spectator's agony aunt Dear Mary and the special celebrity guests who have sought her advice in this year's Christmas magazine, including Joanna Lumley (17:43), Nigel Havers (39:36), Sharron Davies (55:56) and Edwina Currie (01:10:59).  Hosted by William Moore and Lara Prendergast.  Produced by Oscar Edmondson.

The latest episode of the podcast which asks; has Rock Expert David Stubbs come from The Sky?After all the lovely Pop trifle we've had in recent episodes, Pop-Crazed Youngsters, it's time for some necessary roughage, as we take a tentative walk down Nineteen Eighty Six Street once more. And yes, it's stillone of the most rammel years for 20th Century Pop, but somehow we managed to find one which doesn't have the whiff of the dog's arse about it.It's only four months into '86, but our Favourite Thursday Evening Pop Treat is having another of its regular crises, this time brought on by the after effects of Michael Grade taking over at BBC1 and pissing about with the scheduling, meaning that ten whole minutes have been lopped off, and the results are not pretty; everything has been crammed in like a Japanese tube train at knocking-off time, videos have been cut off at the knees, there's a neon set better suited for a Miss Wet T-Shirt competition in Romeo & Juliet's Doncaster and the chart rundown – the whole point of the show, mark you – has been utterly defiled.Musicwise, it's better than it has any right to be. Gary Davies – a man bursting with so much sexual potency in 1986 that the sex workers of Amsterdam are pitching themselves through windows to get at him – has been given the chance to run the show solo for the first time in years, but we don't see that much of him, because there's no time. Big Country pitch up in Success Coats. Michael Hurll practically rips the wig off Falco's head and wipes his arse with it. A-Ha continue their spell as the premier teeny band and get creative with a bit of masking tape. Suzanne Vega gets judged by a poster of a German sex-colossus. And then, oh God, it's the longest examination of a single EVER on Chart Music. Janet Jackson stares her ponce of a boyfriend out. It's Immaterial look absolutely knackered and wonder why their label didn't make a video. George Michael drops the weirdest Number One of the decade, and Whitney Houston spoils everything with a huge dollop of mawk.Sarah Bee and Neil Kulkarni join Al Needham to gingerly pick through the wreckage of 1986, veering off on such tangents as Nick Ross' Drug Buffet, Neil's Gin and Vomit Shame, being mistaken for Pete Docherty's stalker, the best way to tell an interview subject that their new album stinks of unwashed cock, how the Ukraine War would have shagged up TOTP if it was still going, an appreciation of Euro-Ponces, how the BBC thought Bob Monkhouse, Barry Cryer and Nigel Havers could stop youths on dingy estates from taking heroin, and a huge Birmingham Piss Troll update. I'll let Jeffrey tell you the rest, Welcome to E&T VOV Jeffrey Holland

Another enjoyable week on the Cobbles sees Gary try his hardest to upsell on people’s stolen passports, later attempting to shift second-hand 10p mix-ups for £17.40, Gail unreasonably thinks that Audrey should forgive and forget the chaos that her offspring have created and Audrey looks like she’s coming round until an unfortunate spelling of Nigel Havers puts paid to that, and Dev’s heading out of the show for a while and rather than think of something to keep his kids occupied for a few months, the show takes the path of least resistance and sends them all on a plane to India, much to Evelyn’s joy. Meanwhile, Gemma’s a twin; her mum was a twin; her nanna was a twin; she really likes the movie Twins, but she and Chesney aren’t quite prepared for the number of buns in this particular oven and they take turns passing out, and Peter and Carla have found a bed for in a lovely facility but it means moving to Carlisle for a bit. So that’s what they do. They take Simon, because why not. Elsewhere, Tim’s relationship with Tiny may be over before it begins when Sally’s syndicate falls apart quicker than a game of Jenga on a pogo stick, Norris and his chums reminisce about drag nights and Eartha Kitt and fables from Commonwealth Games of yesteryear before he gets in that big black taxi to Edinburgh, and in particularly sad news, Sarah’s phone was not insured.

----more----It’s a bumper week of festive Corrie episodes to ring in the New Year. Peter and Carla team up as Scooby Doo villains to scare the bejesus out of Kirk and Dev in a story that ends up with Carla buying Peter a boat. As you do. Meanwhile, Kate and Rana cry their way back into each others’ arms, Kirky has a surplus of non-alcoholic Hungarian lager, and a chirpy stranger with a connection or two to the street shows up and gets Izzy’s wheels a-spinning. Elsewhere, Gina insults Imran’s coat and then blackmails him and we don’t know which is worse, Chesney continues to have two fully-sighted women chase after him, and Nigel Havers may end up wishing that he made a bigger deal about that sore chest and shoulder when he went to the doctor. So if you’ve made a resolution for the New Year and that resolution is to get in contact with us, or if you fancy being a stand-by guest co-host in a couple of weeks, permit me to facilitate that by going over how you can do so. Ho ho ho! Festive greetings to fellow Corrie fans and to those who can’t quite bring themselves to pull the plug on it. This week, when Rana and Kate aren’t crying, they’re about to cry. No one can think that Jenny has been handling the post-Johnny-Liz thing all that well and few could predict that the situation finds a new rock bottom. In other news, Phil literally hangs Brian out to dry but will it prove to backfire on the odious wee POS, and Seb is convinced living with him and Eileen is just what the twins need. Elsewhere, Cerberus is still separated from Evelyn, Audrey’s come into a wad of money which interests both Nigel Havers and Nick, and Tim is mostly drunk. You can send us your festive missives to us on email, we’re thetalkofthestreet@gmail.com and you can find us @corriepodcast on The Twitter and The Facebook. IT'S BACK... and with a brand new theme tune! WHOOOOP - it's almost as if we've taken things seriously! Rest assured, our organisational skills are still pretty bad, but we're learning and hopefully the break was worth it and this episode is a zinger. On the subject of us learning, we're really really bad at self promotion - if anyone has any ideas on what we need to do - let us know. and while we're on that subject, please head to the Instagram account "talesoftheunexpected_podcast" and DM us with comments, concerns, hints, ideas, thoughts, love... whatever. we do have an email but neither of us remember the password - dont forget to review us too... the first episode of a new series is always daunting as we really love this thing. it does cost but it's such a great hobby that i cant see why $12 each month would stop us doing it, but it really does need some support - if you know a friend or enemy who might enjoy this, please let them know. thats all. So, the new theme tune - it's all thanks to the insanely creative talents of my good friend Mr. Bostin - you can find Paul on Instagram too - "mr_bostin" and if you're ever lucky enough to chat with him, you'll have a lovely moment. Massive thanks for that!!! Next... i mentioned this a while ago - we're busy planning season 5 already and wondered if anyone wanted to guest on an episode via skype or whatever. That offer is still available so DM me on instagram to see what we can do. Finally, the new episodes will be sort of weekly - i only get a few hours per month allowance so cant go weekly, however i can probably release an episode every 10 days... hopefully that will be ok with you guys. ------------------ right then, let's get down to business and defeat the huns! this is an epic tale of biblical proportions and we've got the main man Nigel Havers in fine form. it's actually a fine episode and a perfect intro to season 4. It wouldnt be the same without some inane chat and we try not to disappoint. Where else would you find convos about the Welsh deserts, destroying credit cards when they expire, willy statues, a fancy dress bar fight and camping issues. Well, eventually we get a great unexpected ending. great start - hope you enjoy x

Singer-songwriter Katie Melua, chef Tom Kerridge, writer Alex Wheatle and actor Nigel Havers join Libby Purves and the audience in the BBC Radio Theatre. Katie Melua, the singer and songwriter, was born in Georgia, when it was part of the Soviet Union, and moved to Belfast when she was nine. She returned to her homeland to make her new album, In Winter, working with the Gori Women's Choir. Katie recalls her early years in Georgia, and the very different life she found in Belfast, and she and the 24 members of the Choir perform two songs. Writer Alex Wheatle won this year's Guardian children's fiction prize for his young adult novel Crongton Knights, set around an inner-city estate. Born in 1963 to Jamaican parents living in Brixton, Alex spent much of his childhood in care, and says that a short stint in prison after the 1981 Brixton riots led to a passionate interest in literature, thanks to the advice of a fellow prisoner. Actor Nigel Havers rose to fame as Lord Lindsay in the Oscar-winning film Chariots of Fire, and is renowned for playing charmers, cads and conmen. He's currently playing the Lord Chamberlain in panto at the London Palladium, and his varied career includes roles in Coronation Street, Downton Abbey and a high-profile cameo earlier this year in The Archers. Tom Kerridge is chef and co-owner of The Hand and Flowers pub in Buckinghamshire - the first pub in the world to receive two Michelin stars. He is about to publish Tom Kerridge's Dopamine Diet, which draws on his own experience: he found himself very overweight, a result of the late-night lifestyle of the professional kitchen, and lost more than eleven stones after he devised a diet which remained true to the ideas which underpin his cooking. A new exhibition of work by Russian painter Kasimir Malevich at London's Tate Modern follows his career from early representational work through his cubo-futurist phase, to his creation of the concept of supremacism and back to figurative art. It is grand in its scale and vision and ambition, but will it be packing in the visitors this summer?
