Are you trying to juggle work, family, home and all of your obligations? Too often we try to do everything and please everyone and end up feeling guilt or shame for not being able to do it all. My guest today has practical tips and advice for any of us who feel like we are stretched too thin. It’s such a pleasure to have Jessica Turner on the show today. Jessica is a wife, mom, sister, friend, marketing professional, blogger and best-selling author of the books The Fringe Hours and Stretched Too Thin. In this episode, we talk about her new book. We also talk about why some moms who work-at-home don’t really consider themselves working moms. We talk about automating, prioritizing, getting help, and giving yourself permission to say no. We talk about those important things that we all need to do to help keep ourselves sane and at our best. Show Notes: [05:25] It's still a tug-of-war with working moms and stay-at-home moms. Working is bringing in an income. [06:11] Women who work at home don't see themselves as working moms. [07:03] Women who work from home often don't want to call themselves working moms. Maybe it's because of some type of social stigma. [09:00] A lot of stay-at-home working moms think that if they don't technically get in their car and go somewhere that they aren't a working mom. [09:30] Jessica went to Melissa's book signing in Nashville. [10:00] Melissa thinks Jessica's book is for busy moms not just "working" moms. [10:16] Jessica surveyed 2000 women who work or bring in some type of income. Stay-at-home moms who feel stretched too thin will get a lot of value out of the book. [12:45] Jessica writes about boundaries with work, practicing meaningful relationships, self-care, managing the home, and more. [13:03] Her research shows that the greatest struggle for working moms is either self-care or managing the home. [13:26] Self-care is probably a little bit more of a struggle and that's what Jessica's first book was about. [13:43] Women are great at taking care of everyone else. [14:17] Self-care is necessary and important and it shows our kids that they need to take care of themselves too. [14:55] Self-care includes investing in your passion, investing in your body, and spiritually and emotionally. [15:16] Try time tracking and see where your time is going. [16:40] Track everything you do for a week and how much time you spend on it. [17:10] See where you spent your time and where you can spend your time better. Also notice if you said yes to too many things. [18:37] Jessica tries to live by the "if it isn't a heck yes then it's a no." [19:32] Sometimes even having to pause is a sign that it's not the right time for you. [19:50] It's easier to say no from the beginning then you say yes to something and have to backtrack. [21:23] Just because something's a great thing, it's not a great thing for you right now. [22:58] Working moms often get left out. It can be hurtful to not be invited. Sometimes working moms want to be included. Let your friends know you still want to be included. [27:57] Subscription services. Automating our lives is an easy way to streamline. This can free up your mind and lesson the mental load. [30:22] House cleaners and services like Grove Collaborative can be helpful. It's life giving and helps other businesses. [32:40] The world will fight for your time, and you have to fight back. [33:32] Mother's can have friends. It's important to model relationships for our kids. It's a life giving shift. [34:30] Glass balls vs rubber balls. Glass balls will shatter if dropped. Treat yourself like a glass ball not a rubber ball. Spend time where it is important. Relationships and self-care are glass balls. [37:29] Think about how you are feeling and use it as motivation to make changes in your life. [38:04] Often, we push our feelings aside instead of using them for change. [40:44] Jessica answers the three questions... [45:03] Women need to be empowered to not feel guilt and shame and take time for self-care. Thanks for joining us on Ordinary People Ordinary Things. Meredith is on vacation, so Kaytee has a special guest co-host join her for this week’s episode. She is so excited to share her conversation with Jessica Turner! You’ll hear a “bookish moment of the week” from each of us: one that only a family of two authors will ever experience and a new discovery at the library that made for a quiet weekend at home. We dive in to discussing 2 books each. One of which we both cannot stop talking about. Next, we get to discuss Jessica’s new book, Stretched Too Thin, as well as her previous work, The Fringe Hours. Both are books you need on your shelves! Who wants to win a copy of STT? I’ll be giving away a copy on Instagram this week, so pop on over there to enter! We finish up with A Book (yep, capitalized) that we’d like to put into every reader’s hands. Jessica does a great job pushing BOTH of our books into your hands this week, as I promise you’ll want to pick up each of them for totally different reasons. They also kind of follow a theme (unintentionally, as usual!). Time-stamped show notes are below with references to every book and resource we mentioned in this episode. My guest for The Happy Hour #213 is Jessica Turner. Jessica is the author of the newly released Stretched Too Thin: How Working Moms Can Lose the Guilt, Work Smarter, and Thrive and The Wall Street Journal bestselling book The Fringe Hours. She is also an award-winning marketing professional and speaker, and the founder of the lifestyle blog The Mom Creative. She and her husband, Matthew, live with their three children in Nashville, Tennessee. I am so happy to welcome my friend Jessica back to the show! Jessica and I start out talking about books, which if you love books you need to follow her Instagram profile where she shares about what she's reading! We then dive in and talk about the concept of mental load. Friends, I know we all suffer from the stress of mental load - coordinating, managing, analyzing, and juggling in our minds ALL THE THINGS, am I right? Jessica shares practical tips for managing mental load and reminds us that self-care is not selfish, it's necessary. We also discuss how we need to stop separating ourselves based on where/what/when we work. I love how Jessica says whether you're a stay at home mom or a working mom, "we are all moms who love our kids"! In the second half of the show, Jessica shares the story of when her husband Matthew (a published author) wrote his first children's book, he was turned down a dozen times. Instead of letting that stop them, Jessica and Matthew self-published the book, it sold out, and now it's sold 100,000 copies! You guys, I loved talking with Jessica today and I know that through our conversation I was reminded of the grace God gives us every single day, and how we can extend grace and care to each other and to ourselves. {You can listen to the show HERE, and make sure you never miss a Happy Hour - subscribe using your favorite podcast app (ie. iTunes, Google Play). Every mother knows that raising kids is a full time job. Not "full time" in the business sense of 9-5, Monday to Friday, but full time in the literal sense. You never clock out, you never get a vacation, and you never retire. Which is a big part of the reason those of us who choose to pursue a career on top of being moms can often find ourselves feeling overwhelmed by feeling of guilt and inadequacy. My guest on today's show, Jessica Turner, author of the bestselling book, The Fringe Hours and founder of the popular lifestyle blog, The Mom Creative, has a new book on the way. Stretched Too Thin is a compassionate, encouraging guide to help moms lose the guilt, ease their stress, and embrace their roles as working mothers. You can find Jessica's blog on Facebook, follow her on Twitter, and per-order her new book here.
My guest today is a second time visitor to the podcast. Jessica Turner was on 2 years ago talking about her first book "The Fringe Hours". Definitely check out her episode on that here. And now she's back to talk about her second book, "Stretched Too Thin." This book will really offer support and insight to working moms who feel like they have a lot of balls in the air and they are trying to do it all. So Jessica talks about why she wrote the book and she shares basic tips for all moms to prioritize their values. Definitely pick up her book if this topic resonates with you. I wanted to pop in quick and share with you what's on my heart for you. These are things that I do when I need some encouragement for my day. - The first one is one that I use when I feel like my kids are crazy, when I need to pray and be encouraged, so basically every day. It's worship music! I pull up my nifty YouTube app and listen. The one that I love right now is So Will I (100 Billion X) from Hillsong United and Rooftops from Jesus Culture. Worship music is great for when I need inspiration, so I can get in the mood and in the zone. When I start writing something, I pray and ask Jesus for his words to flow through me. It's someone else singing and praising God so I can write and still be praising God. - Secondly prayer. Whether that's with you alone, with your kids or your partner. If you have a friend to type "hey, can you pray for me today" is so good! That's why I talk so much about having an inner circle who is willing to pray for you, for your business. If you have times when it's a rough day when you've been up all night, it's necessary. My girlfriend and her husband are in town sharing about their missionary journey and what's next so I was up late last night coming up with a few different ideas as to how to do something with what they were sharing. She was talking about wanting to use their experiences to teach kids about mission work so in my head, like every good creative entrepreneur, I was up thinking through writing something up. It's so powerful to have those people who can pray and lift you up, pray for zest and zeal for their day. - The last thing that gets me excited and going for the day is to make a to-do list so I'm not having to remember everything in my head, but rather, having it on paper so that I can scratch things off as they get completed. If it's on paper and I've got a pocket of time, I'm able to work on something small. My husband and I were talking about to-do lists. Someone was talking (possibly JP Morgan) and saying something about "show me how to make a million dollars and I'll give you x amount of money." Someone sitting with him wrote on the top of a piece of paper "to-do list" and gave it to him. While making a to-do list might not make you a million dollars, but it makes a difference in how much you get done. I read The Fringe Hours a few years ago and it made a huge difference in how I view time and productivity. We've got 24-hours in our day and if we use eight of those hours, or if you're like me and you want 10 hours of sleep, that leaves time to cook, eat, go to the bathroom and shower, kids and family and girlfriends who want to go do things. That takes away those hours. So if you write down what you want to do for the day or the week, then set priorities for the day, you get things done. Jessica's point was that in tiny pockets of time you've got, you can work towards getting things done. It makes me super excited to get my list done. I can do things when my husband gets home, or I got a text for a free Redbox which I'm totally going to go get. I deserve a break and I want to make time for it. I will always be one for to-do lists, unless you get super overwhelmed by them, then we'll figure something else out for you. That's my encouragement for today - go make it a great day!

http://mothersonthefrontline.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/episode-3.mp3 In this episode, Emily talks about her journey raising a young son with Tourette's Syndrome. She talks about the importance of community building on many levels, including strengthening relationships within the family and marriage, her church, her son's school, and the larger community. By educating those in their lives about Tourette's Syndrome, her son can be himself and feel part of a supportive and understanding community. She also discusses the importance of intentional planning of self-care and ways to make it happen. Topics include: Tourette's Syndrome, Self-Care, Family, Community, Advocating for your child at school. Resources mentioned in this podcast: Tourette Association of America - (Formerly known as the Tourette Syndrome Association) focuses on awareness, research, and support. https://tourette.org/ The book: The Fringe Hours by Jessica Turner Transcription Speaker: Welcome to the Just Ask Mom Podcast, where mothers share their experiences of raising children with mental illness. Just Ask Mom is a Mothers on the Frontline Production. Today we will speak to Emily, a mother of a son with Tourette's Syndrome, living in Iowa. Tammy: Well, I was wondering if you could just start by telling us a little about yourself? Emily: Sure, my name is Emily and I'm a wife and a mom of two kids. I have a daughter who's seven and I have a son who's nine, and my nine-year-old son has Tourette's syndrome. Tourette's syndrome is a neurological condition that causes a variety of motor and vocal tics. So, in my son's case he has a coughing tic, blinks his eyes, will have shoulder raises and that kind of thing. So, we have just had the diagnosis for a couple of years, so we're sort of new to all of this but he is a joy in our family and we're just really learning how to best care and best parent him. Tammy: Awesome. So, before we get started I'm just going to ask you to step back for a moment and tell us a little bit about you either before mothering or outside of mothering, a little bit about you. Emily: Yeah, I have a lot of different interests. My faith is a really important interest of mine, I just really enjoy being a part of a church and that's just a really important piece of who I am. I also really just love creating things so I love to sew, I love to bake, I love to make cards. They do have to have a finite ending to them. Tammy: (laughs) Emily: I'm not the scrap booker that can keep on going forever but I do love those short creative projects. I also love the Olympics and I'm a big Disney fan, it truly is my happy place. So, those are some of my passions and interests. Tammy: Wonderful, thank you for that. I want you to pretend that you're talking to other moms, what do you want them to know? Emily: I would say that the thing that I would want them to know is how community is so important when you're the parent of a child with Tourette's syndrome or any special need. That community is a place where you can get support and encouragement but it really just helps you be a super confident mom and to be the best mom that you can be to your child. So, I thought I'd share a few places that have helped me in building community. One of them is just within the family itself. I asked my son before I came here, “What's the one thing that I do as your mom that helps you as a person living with Tourette's Syndrome?” He said, “You just make it okay to have it.” A huge compliment from him, but just making sure that our family is a place that he feels safe and comfortable, that it's a place he knows he can let all of his tics out when he gets home from school, or he can talk to us about how his tics are making him feel. Building community within our family means spending a lot of time together and it's figuring out what that is. So, for us we love to play games together. We enjoy Disney together. (laughs). Traveling is a big bonding experience too.

In Episode 8 of Edit Your Life, Christine interviews Jessica Turner about how to edit guilt and comparison out of your life, the elusive struggle for balance, why it’s hard to ask for help (and how to get over that!), and mindreading (or lack thereof) -- all to the effect of making room for the things in life that bring you joy.
