Men's Wearhouse was founded in 1973 in Houston, TX, by George Zimmer. With a background in men's clothing, Zimmer grew the business — organically and through a series of acquisitions. Most people are familiar with Men's Wearhouse from its unforgettable commercials in the 90s and early 2000s guaranteeing customers that they were “going to like the way they looked.” Decades later, positive associations with the brand continue because of those commercials.  Significant milestones built the company. With a focus on becoming the preeminent men's clothing store in North America, Moores Clothing for Men in Canada was acquired in 1999. K&G — a store serving men, women, and children — was acquired in the same year and rebranded as K&G Fashion Superstore. The business completed the acquisition of Jos. A. Bank® as a brand in 2014, and leadership established a holding company — Tailored Brands, Inc. — to manage the portfolio in 2016.   Today, with clothing chains in the US and Canada, customers are presented with a range of “life event” clothing options, from dress suits to tuxedos. Offering a personalized customer experience as they plan for special events — like proms and weddings — has developed a loyal customer base spanning generations.  Mark Johnson, CEO of Loyalty360, spoke with Carolyn Pollock, Chief Marketing Officer for Tailored Brands, Inc., about building emotional loyalty through meaningful relationships, partnering with Snapchat in an exciting campaign to serve prom-goers, and helping busy grooms manage their wedding party with Wedding Wingman.Read the full interview on Loyalty360 here: https://loyalty360.org/content-gallery/in-depth-exclusives/men-s-wearhouse-leveraging-decades-of-experience-innovating-to-engage-the-next-generation-of-loyal

Charlie Bresler joins Purposely to share his story as co founder of the charity The Life You Can Save. In 2013 Charlie started the charity with Peter Singer, widely recognized as one of the world's most influential contemporary philosophers, to advance the ideas in his 2009 book, The Life You Can Save: Acting Now to End World Poverty. In it, Peter argues that if we can provide immense benefit to someone at minimal cost to ourselves, we should do so. Charlie had read Peter Singers book and was inspired to reach out, he sent a cold email offering to help and stating that his skills in business and marketing would assist to super power the mission. Charlie and his wife, Diana, also provided funding for The Life You Can Save to become a registered 501c3 charity, and Charlie began serving as the organization's non-salaried Executive Director. Their overall vision is to create a world where everyone has an opportunity to build a better life and where there's no suffering or death due to extreme poverty. The mission to make ‘smart giving simple' continues and they do this by curating a group of nonprofits online that save or improve the most lives per dollar. It helps donors to access and give to good causes overseas. ‘We can, each of us, do our part in ending extreme poverty. But we won't reach our goal unless many more contribute to the effort.' While Charlie is no longer leading the organisation on a day to day basis he is still involved as a donor and as an active ambassador and spokesperson. Prior to starting the charity Charlie, was the president of a large American based apparel company. Initially working in human resources he rose through the ranks to the position of Vice President of The Men's Warehouse Group having been recruited by an old friend George Zimmer who was also the company's founder. A former professional tennis coach and psychologist Charlie earnt a PhD in Social and Clinical Psychology from Clark University, he became Director of Behavioural Medicine for The California School of Professional Psychology, Fresno (CSPP-F), where he was a full-time professor and founder of a teaching clinic for treating anxiety & stress disorders. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mark-longbottom2/message

In 1970, George Zimmer was a college graduate with no real job prospects and little direction. That's when his father, an executive at a boy's clothing company, asked him to go on an important business trip to Asia. It was that trip that propelled him into the world of men's apparel. In 1973, the first Men's Wearhouse opened in Houston with little fanfare, but by the mid-80s, George Zimmer managed to carve out a distinct niche in the market—a place where men could buy a good quality suit, at "everyday low prices," along with all the shirts, ties, socks, and shoes they need. With George as the face of the brand, Men's Wearhouse became a multi-billion dollar empire with hundreds of stores across the U.S. But then, in 2013, a bitter battle forced him to give it all up.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

After being let go as executive chairman of Men's Warehouse, the company he founded, in 2013, George Zimmer founded Generation Tux a year later. Generation Tux offers convenient and low-stress suit rental services exclusively online. “In lieu of going [to the] store, there are many advantages through Generation Tux, particularly for the bride who has so much going on around her wedding. Gen Tux is a load off her mind,” said Zimmer on the latest episode of the Glossy Podcast.  With 50 years of experience in the suit industry, Zimmer understands the desire to order your own wedding tuxedo from the comfort of your living room. Generation Tux's concise shipping timeline — it delivers customers' suits three weeks before an event — is also advantageous since it allows for last-minute changes.  But even with the online spending spree of the pandemic, the company has faced challenges. When the pandemic first hit, Generation Tux temporarily shut down until it received government aid. Two years later, it is reaping the benefits of the pandemic's demand for accessible online fashion, with yearly revenue of $5 million.

106: The Politics of Giving - Charlie Bresler

The Politics of Everything

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 31, 2021 33:13

Around 20 years ago, I did a whole Masters thesis on Philanthropic models that took me to leaders in this arena across the USA and Europe. While most of us take an impulsive approach to giving, a little bit of research into where your dollars will do the most good can make your donation hundreds or even thousands of times more effective!  The Life You Can Save, an organization based in Australia and the U.S., helps people do just this by highlighting evidence-backed, high-impact, cost-effective charities that save lives, reduce suffering and empower women. So today I speak to Charlie Bresler, co-founder of Peter Singer's The Life You Can Save. Charlie describes his career path as “not exactly linear”.  As a college student at New York University during the height of the Vietnam War, he was a political activist. Wanting to share his perspective with secondary school students, he got a Master's degree from Harvard in Social Studies and Education and taught for three years.  For a variety of reasons, he decided teaching secondary school was not for him. Switching gears, he then went on to manage a tennis club and later wandered into a job as a psychology tech, followed in 1981 by graduate school at Clark University where he received an MA and Ph.D in social and clinical psychology. This led to a seven year stint as a graduate professor of psychology. Fast-forward to 1992, Bresler ran into his old childhood friend George Zimmer, who enticed him to switch career paths and join his clothing company that had just gone public. He eventually became President of the Company, but In 2008 he walked into Zimmer's office and told his lifelong friend that he was done. Bresler was ready to give up the chance to succeed Zimmer as CEO to make a move that was more in line with his desire to “be a part of producing meaningful social change”.   Bresler feels that TLYCS has a strong proof of concept – namely, The Life You Can Save can move a multiple of dollars invested in organizational infrastructure to the highly effective charities recommended on their website.   In fact, for every dollar spent by TLYCS on their operations over the last eight years, they've been able to raise an average of approximately 12-17 dollars to their recommended charities. Hear from Charlie on: You say the “The Life You Can Save” is based on some simple beliefs and assumptions. First, through our effective donations, we can save actual lives of people dying every day that would not be dying with the simple interventions available in the ‘developed' world. Secondly, we have an ethical obligation to use some portion of our wealth and privilege to save lives and reduce the unnecessary suffering associated with ‘extreme poverty', defined as living on less than $1.25 USD/day (around AUD$2.50).”  In Australia, we do have more social security measures for those in need and had universal health care in Australia for 40 years, but poverty still impacts too many people in a ‘wealthy nation'. How can philanthropy start to change that? Is it more than well publicized or strategic hand-outs from the super-wealthy people? How during Covid has the idea of giving changed? Many are doing it tough still or have lost their own incomes or homes. What does that mean for giving? What role does government tax benefits and other concessions play in improving giving? What about ways to know the real impact and do you suggest philanthropists measure what giving can do for those organizations who receive it? I once met an Australian business owner who wanted to give away all his wealth before he died and had convinced his family that was the way to go – is that the level of giving you see often? Take away: What is your final thought or message for us on The Politics of Giving?   For more on Charlie and TLYCS: The Life You Can Save - Best Charities for Effective Giving

He is trusted by visionary executives to help rethink or create entirely new brand experiences and products that disrupt existing industries or create entirely new markets. When celebrity businessman George Zimmer wanted to create his new online company Generation Tux, he asked Alder and his team to design the entire brand experience. Alder began his career as an information architect, interaction designer, and UX designer even as those terms were being defined in the industry. As the Web progressed from simple home pages to e-commerce transactions, so did Alder rapidly progress from designer to executive leader in TUX design. Along the way, he designed Williams-Sonoma's first online wedding registry and the first end-to-end online car purchase experience for Autonation. At Sapient he helped define the company’s global user experience design process and opened the company’s Tokyo office with a team of fellow executives. In 2005 Alder founded HYDRANT, a customer experience and product design firm. Alder has led mission-critical brand and experience design engagements for brands including Google, Twitter, Home Depot, Wal-Mart, Gymboree, Cisco, HP, Motorola, Fidelity, Anki, Blurb, Starwood, Subaru, and Tesla Motors, often serving as an outsourced product design leader. Most recently Alder served as the Chief Experience Officer at Cibo, a brand and customer experience agency (acquired by Projekt202) dedicated to creating winning brands and products by applying design thinking to business. As CXO, Alder managed the company's UX and Strategy offerings. In that capacity, he developed the company’s unique Brand Experience Strategy approach and provided thought leadership on brand, customer experience, and UX by writing and speaking. San Francisco Magazine has called Alder “The Wine World’s Brightest Cyberstar” and he is widely accepted as a pioneer of wine blogging. The Richest People in the world don’t own 100% of their businesses. And neither does Roland. You don't need to own 100% to maintain control of your company. With an all-too-knowing look, Roland Frasier told his Mastermind, “The biggest risk in bringing on investors is that you lie and get sued. Or you don’t tell the truth and the SEC sends you to jail, AND you get sued, AND you lose your money. Uh, so it’s a really (not) a great thing to do.” That’s pretty much the worst scenario. But if you’re concerned about losing control of the company you founded - or being kicked out like Steve Jobs with Apple, you’re not alone, and you have good reason to be concerned. “These are strategies that many people don’t think about. And if you don’t think about it, then bad things can happen because if you think about Steve Jobs, he got thrown out of Apple. George Zimmer, out of Men’s Warehouse, Chip Wilson out of Lulu Lemon, (to name a few) even though they were founders.” Roland Frasier But in this episode, Roland surprisingly makes a case that will move you forward. You’ll benefit from this ex-lawyers’ perspective. “There’s just no place to make more money faster than going into those markets”. Roland Frasier. Did you know, • Jeff Bezos is worth 110 Billion (and climbing). He only owns 12% of Amazon. • Warren Buffet has a net worth of $86 Billion but only has 38% of Berkshire Hathaway. • Bill Gates, worth 105 Billion, has a mere 1.3% of Microsoft. You get the idea. “So none of these people have a majority interest in their company, but you can control the company, even though you don’t own it.” Roland Frasier.  Listen for, • How to give shares away, but keep control. • The impact of good legal advice, compared to GREAT legal advice. In 1970, George Zimmer was a college graduate with no real job prospects and little direction. That's when his father, an executive at a boy's clothing company, asked him to go on an important business trip to Asia. It was that trip that propelled him into the world of men's apparel. In 1973, the first Men's Wearhouse opened in Houston with little fanfare. But by the mid-80s, George Zimmer managed to carve out a distinct niche in the market – a place where men could buy a good quality suit, at "everyday low prices," along with all the shirts, ties, socks, and shoes they need. With George as the face of the brand, Men's Wearhouse became a multi-billion dollar empire with hundreds of stores across the U.S. But then, in 2013, a bitter battle forced him to give it all up. PLUS in our postscript "How You Built That," we check back with two brothers from Guinea, West Africa who founded a company that makes Ginjan, a spicy-sweet juice from their childhood that mixes pineapple and ginger.
