Episode 6: Greg Ryan Greg Ryan carried an unimaginable secret for 54 years. It was one he was embarrassed to share. One that didn't allow him to plan ahead. One that resulted in a life of shame, social stigma and intense mental health difficulties. And one that would eventually lead him into a dark place, and then out again, and inevitably to where he was meant to be. Greg was born without an anal opening, a congenital abnormality known as Imperforate Anus. And it was finding ‘his tribe' that propelled him on a mission to establish the ONE in 5000 Foundation to educate people about the condition and provide support and resources for those with it. Greg is generous and raw and as you will hear, throughout his climb of the mountain, his sense of humour and love for family, friends and the North Melbourne football club has never wavered. Will champion NSW country rider Greg Ryan make a comeback to race riding? Ryan says the fire for racing still burns brightly.
Aotearoa's association with beer started off in a small corner of the country in 1773. It was by the crew of the Resolution, captained by James Cook, who found the cooler climes of Dusky Sound provided a much better environment for brewing than trying to ferment while at sea. Their experimental brew kicks off Greg Ryan's new book Continuous Ferment, which looks at the history of beer and brewing in New Zealand. As a history professor, Greg brings a depth to the book that takes in beer's relationship to the social and economic fabric of the country - right up to the present day. It's rich in detail - from the early breweries, various attempts at prohibition, the 6 o'clock swill, dominance of Lion and DB and the relatively recent rise of the craft beer market.
Lincoln University History Professor Greg Ryan joins REX host Dom George to talk about his new book, 'Continuous Ferment: A History of Beer and Brewing in New Zealand'. BONUS EPISODE I had the opportunity to sit down with Greg Ryan of Bell's Los Alamos in the dining room of Octavia in SF, all while John Trox took photos of the conversation (AS IT WAS HAPPENING). Pretty dope if you ask me. Passionate people make life worth it. I didn't have a chance to sit down with Chef Daisy as she was busy prepping that evenings Pop Up Menu. I held this conversation back because the audio wasn't that great, I processed it to get it to a coherent sound, and after much deliberation and a phone call to Greg...here we are. Instigated by Nick Gibbins a team of 3 men and 3 women will attempt to do over 12,000 burpees in a 24 hr period to raise funds for Motor Neurone Disease. Three of the team are mid life athletes and fair to say exploring the boundaries of what we think is feasible for those of us in middle age. In a call of recruitment, Greg Ryan first learned of his job in a simple pitch: to help doctors save lives. Now as a Principal Solutions Engineer in the healthcare unit at Salesforce, Ryan knows how true that pitch rings. Ryan joined Highway to Health host David Kemp to discuss his critical role at Salesforce and how the process company is changing up the healthcare industry.Unlike the name, the Salesforce healthcare unit does not sell things, in fact, they process them.Often, doctors visits require an hour or maybe even two to schedule out of the day, with paperwork, travel time, and more blocking valuable facetime with the healthcare professional. Ryan's experience in a clinical setting was different, coming in and out in 15 minutes or less. This sparked the question: how is the ease of this clinic visit possible when GP visits are more than twice the time?“It's because…the service that they're providing is a product. And they're going to get paid x amount of dollars for that product, so the only way for them to increase their profitability is to have more people coming through the system,” explained Ryan. While most clinic facilities take insurance (meaning the price is the same between clinic and GP), the time it takes to see a doctor and have a visit is significantly improved.“They're process-minded,” said Ryan about the clinic, which is why Salesforce entering the healthcare industry is important, as processing comes naturally to them.Whenever an appointment is missed in a healthcare setting, that accounts for revenue loss on the part of the healthcare provider. Ryan knows this must be mitigated and the Salesforce healthcare unit aims to help remind people of their appointments and their healthcare needs via messages and phone calls, optimizing the process “in any sort of way that these organizations want to engage with their patients.”

This World Continence Week, join the call to support more than one million men around Australia who live with incontinence. In this episode of Viewpoints, Henry chats with Rowan Cockerell about BINS4Blokes. Join the Bins4Blokes campaign this World Continence Week 2021 This World Continence Week (21 to 27 June), join the call to support more than one million men around Australia who live with incontinence. The Continence Foundation of Australia is launching BINS4Blokes – and you can get involved. What is Bins4Blokes BINS4Blokes is an Australia-wide awareness and advocacy campaign promoting the installation of incontinence bins in male public toilet facilities. Incontinence affects 1 in 10 men in Australia, of all ages. Did you know that many male public toilets do not have a disposal bin for men to place their continence products? This leaves men to carry used products with them or feel stressed about how they'll throw them out. A lack of options stops men with incontinence from going out to exercise, shop and simply enjoy life. A study of Australian men with urinary incontinence found: · 50% avoided situations where they could not access a toilet easily · 57% intentionally kept accidents secret from those close to them · 27% stated they stayed at home as a precautionary measure How you can support the Bins4Blokes campaign and improve men's health in your community The Continence Foundation of Australia is calling on all agencies that provide toilet facilities to join the BINS4Blokes campaign and install incontinence product bins in male toilets. Everybody should have access to a comfortable and discreet way to dispose of incontinence pads and pants. “Our hope this World Continence Week is to get BINS4Blokes into male public toilets Australia-wide,” says Rowan Cockerell, CEO of the Continence Foundation of Australia. Adding BINS4Blokes to toilet facilities will help men in your community live and work with confidence. BINS4Blokes supporter Greg Ryan was born with a rare congenital condition called Imperforate Anus, also known as Anorectal Malformation. He has lived with faecal incontinence his entire life and is passionate about raising awareness and understanding of incontinence. He says the BINS4Blokes campaign will make a huge difference. “The BINS4Blokes campaign will impact and change the daily lives of males of all ages who have had to deal with incontinence, mostly in secret. I know BINS4Blokes will be a life changer for me!” Greg says. Get involved at https://bins4blokes.org.au/ This conversation was originally broadcast on 3SER's 97.7FM Casey Radio in June 2021. It was produced by Rob Kelly.

[29:12] in this lighthearted yet informative episode, hosts Greg & Ryan lay their cards on the table sharing lessons learned from mistakes, missteps & miscues
A long overdue chat with a hard working jockey who would have competed at the highest metropolitan level had he so desired, but Greg Ryan preferred life in the bush. He talks about his early life in Wellington NSW and his days as a motor mechanic. Greg talks of his introduction to thoroughbreds at the Macquarie Stud and the conversation with another jockey who encouraged him to consider a riding career. He talks of his first apprenticeship in Wellington and the battle he had to lose 10kgs before he could get started as a race rider. Greg recalls his very first winner in 1991. It was really only half a win as he dead heated with a horse ridden by another legendary country jockey. He reveals that he had to go way out west to get started. The veteran jockey pays tribute to some wonderful country riders who became role models. He looks back on a brief stint in Sydney in 1998. He rode winners for some top stables but couldn’t adapt to city living. He acknowledges the support he got from legendary bush trainer Keith Swan and discusses his strike rate in big races like the Wellington Boot. Greg brushes through a list of talented horses he’s been associated with, and talks of the improvement in bush race tracks. The jockey looks back on the few clashes he’s had with country stewards and one particular case that still haunts him. Greg pays tribute to his wife Pauline and the role she’s played in his frantically busy career. He agrees his injury list has been reasonable in view of the enormous number of rides he’s had in almost thirty years. One of those accidents has remained a source of amusement to Greg and those who witnessed it.

In 2017, husband-and-wife team Daisy and Greg Ryan traded the fine dining environs of the vaunted New York City restaurant Per Se for the quaint, down-home vibes of Los Alamos, CA, a small town of less than 2,000 people. A year later they opened Bell’s, a French-inspired bistro that’s become a critical darling and must-visit for anyone hanging out in the Santa Ynez Valley’s wine country. Danny Nogueiras was the touring drummer for punk rockers FIDLAR before breaking off to launch his solo endeavor the band NO WIN in 2015. Danny and company are poised to debut their highly anticipated first full-length album, downey, which is a candid look at his personal experiences growing up in Southern California. NO WIN performs live for us at Dangerbird Records’ studio in Los Angeles. Snacky Tunes is powered by Simplecast.

In recent years I've enjoyed the event with him, but I missed 2018. However, another friend, Ryan Wheeler, does that job this year. Greg, Ryan, and I met around 15 years ago when we all lived nearby and played regularly in our little group, the Santa Clarita Boardgamers. Of those three, I'm the only one still in Santa Clarita, California. Greg's in Texas, and Ryan's in South Dakota. While it's too bad I couldn't join them this year, I'm so happy that BGGcon is around to draw old gamer friends together like a magnet. Greg & Ryan gave me their combined list of games played at BGGcon, and then gave each game a 1-5 star rating. That's sort of like half of a BGG rating, but really it's a measure of the eagerness for playing the games again, as well as a reflection of the experience at the time. Know what I mean? It's enthusiasm, as much as it's a measure of artistic/entertainment merit according to some "standardized" scale. Think of it this way--it's easier to enthusiastically give a game 5 stars and be excited to play again, even if you're not yet sure the game is a "10." Whatever the stars are, the real value in the podcast is listening to these guys describe the games and their experiences with them. They played most of them together, though you'll also hear when they split up & tried different things. Along the way you'll also hear about some happenings at BGGcon that aren't strictly boardgaming--stuff like the puzzle hunt, virtual flea market, and bazaar. (No BBQ commentary this time, but I trust they enjoyed Texas' contribution to fine dining. I know I would've.) -Mark
